Unsound Toronto is back. Bigger, better, louder than ever Friday June 10: Amnesia Scanner, The Bug ft. Flowdan & Miss Red, Elysia Crampton, Jlin, Kara LisCoverdale, Lotic, Rabih Beaini, Raime, and sunn o))) Saturday June 11: Alessandro Cortini, Ancient Methods, Aurora Halal, Evian Christ, Hot Shotz (Powell & Lorenzo Senni), Olivia, Orphx, Roly Porter, T’ien Lai, Tim Hecker, and Waclaw Zimpel with Rabih Beaini “A two-day, genre-spanning, beautifully curated exploration of experimental sound” - BlogTO “This is exactly what Toronto needs. NNNN” – NOW Magazine “Best fest of the year” Chart Attack Toronto, ON – Last year’s wildly popular Unsound Toronto at Luminato Festival enthralled concertgoers, topped ‘best-of’ lists and “set the bar for future music fests in Toronto” (BlogTO). In 2016 Poland’s groundbreaking music festival is back to present a pioneering program even wider in scope, turning on the Hearn with two electrifying nights of music and technology that will kick off Luminato’s 10th anniversary first weekend. Drawing on more than a decade's experience in connecting sound and architecture in unique spaces, Unsound Toronto creates a mythic sonic journey including ambient soundscapes, noise, drone metal, pounding techno and the most contemporary fractured club music. The program is full of contrasts and fascinating intersections, featuring vanguard legends as well as the freshest names and genres. 20 acts across two nights represent a diverse group of performers from 11 different countries spanning a huge music spectrum, peppered with Canadian debuts and special projects. All this goes down in the mighty Hearn, where Unsound directors Mat Schulz and Malgorzata Plysa explore the architecture of the iconic industrial landmark with sound, video, light and even laser. And as anyone who attended Unsound Toronto 2015 can testify, Unsound at the Hearn is an absolutely unforgettable experience. “I still have people telling me all the time how much Unsound Toronto 2015 blew their minds,” said Jorn Weisbrodt, Artistic Director, Luminato Festival. “It was the first public, cultural event to be held at the Hearn – so naturally we had to bring it back to be part of our residency in the space. We are going to submerge the Hearn Generating Station in sound and light once again with some of the most trailblazing musical artists performing today. It is the perfect kick-off for Luminato as we #TurnOnTheHearn and turn up the heat.”

“Unsound Toronto in 2015 was exhilarating and we look forward to returning to the city with an expanded program this year,” added Unsound co-creator Mat Schulz. “The Hearn’s remarkable industrial architecture is the perfect setting for a sonic adventure, where the space itself also becomes a headliner.” On Friday June 10 from 9 p.m. on, the Music Stage at the Hearn opens itself to an immersive night of drone metal, noise, dub and darkness. The loudest band in the world, sunn o))), will play their first show in Canada in more than a decade - a singular live experience, part concert and part ritual, that is not only heard, but felt. Only The Bug could follow, with a visceral onslaught of bass, noise and dub with MC’s Miss Red - who released an incredible mixtape in 2015 - and Flowdan. Raime perform their Canadian debut, also their first major concert as a three-piece including live drums, with riveting music that mines a 70’s industrial sound, dubstep and techno, full of shuddering bass, while hypnotically rhythmic. Montreal artist Kara-Lis Coverdale brings her otherworldly ambient music to Unsound with new layers via the work of Berlin-based visual artist MFO (Marcel Weber), who has a residency at this year’s Unsound Toronto. In bold contrast, the Side Room explores the frontier of electronic and club music with boundary blurring rules. Four Canadian premieres include: Bolivian-Californian trans-evangelist Elysia Crampton, whose show is both theatre and deconstructed dance music; mysterious Finnish shape-shifters Amnesia Scanner create hyper-real music as futuristic as anything out there; Berlin-based US artist Lotic collides dance music genres to create intense, disorienting shows; and Lebanon’s Rabih Beaini transcends geography and the idea of a DJ set to blur music from around the globe. Last but not least, Chicago’s Jlin morphs footwork into new forms, injecting it with space and darkness to create something all her own. On Saturday, June 11 from 9 p.m. on, the Music Stage sees electronic music heavyweights jostle with rising names in a program that journeys from deep listening to euphoric dance, paired with video, light, fog and laser. LA-based Italian Alessandro Cortini opens (best known for recording and touring with Nine Inch Nails) he has also carved a name for stunning experimental analogue synth albums and shows. Canadian Tim Hecker presents music from his new release on 4AD “Love Streams”, paired with immersive lighting from MFO, with whom Tim first worked at last year’s Ephemera Live at Unsound Toronto. MFO is also working with the UK’s Roly Porter, who performs in the wake of his universally acclaimed new album on Triangle, where rhythm, bass and sound design are shaped into a physical force. Evian Christ’s show will be immersive and overwhelming in a different way, the world premiere of a new show with visual artist Emmanuel Baird featuring music full of intricate beats, light and laser, connected to his upcoming album. The icing on the cake is the North American premiere of Hot Shotz - a collaboration initiated by Unsound linking Lorenzo Senni’s deconstructed, eternal trance with Powell’s beat-driving sampling. The Side Room explores twisted techno and far beyond. Ancient Methods present the Canadian premiere of their wild, noisy techno, Canadian duo Orphx bring their signature rhythmic industrial sound, while New Yorker Aurora Halal performs live locally for the first time, following up on her fantastic Toronto DJ set from earlier this year.

Celebrating Unsound’s origins, Polish artists are also out in force - with Unsound Krakow resident DJ Olivia, as well as 4-piece collective T’ien Lai - using electronics, synths and drums – and clarinetist and composer Waclaw Zimpel pairing with Rabih Beaini, who performs a second, very different set on analogue synth. About Unsound: From its roots as a small underground festival in cellar clubs in Krakow, Poland, Unsound is an amorphous music festival that has become one of the world's foremost events in electronic and experimental music, famed for discovering new artists and commissioning risk-taking projects. In addition to its flagship festival in Krakow, Unsound has four acclaimed editions under its belt, regularly taking place in New York, London and Adelaide. This year, Toronto is its sole North American destination. Known for both its innovative programming and producing events in adapted spaces, Unsound uses its Toronto manifestation to animate the vast, and typically empty, Hearn Generating Station. www.unsound.plhttp://www.unsound.pl About Luminato Festival Luminato Festival is Toronto’s global multi-arts festival dedicated to performance, visual art, music, theatre, dance, magic and more.
