The Cookhouse Wind Farm This Cookhouse Wind Farm Local Circular marks the second of its kind, providing the local community to the Wind Farm with relevant updates and news from site.

Requires the services of a selfmotivated, bilingual and dynamic individual to fill the following vacancy at their Middelburg office: Legal Secretary/Typist Preferably with litigation and legal typing experience The remuneration will depend on the profile and experience of successful applicants Please email or fax CV to Frans Smit at [email protected]

Left: A Health and Safety Officer begins marking a turbine foundation excavation. Right: The Construction Management Team discusses progress at a turbine foundation position. Significant milestones were achieved over the course of the last month, including further road and foundation progress, the arrival and shipping of further turbines and the inspection of production facilities in India and Spain. Construction Update: Construction continues on site with civil contractors now well underway on section 2 of the total 8 sections of road to be constructed. Each section comprises about 8 turbine locations and the roads that link them. Road construction is now in a steady rhythm with the process of plant search and rescue, topsoil clearing and stockpiling for later rehabilitation and smoothing and compacting of surfacing material well honed. Likewise, the preparation of hardstands to accommodate cranes and equipment for the erection of turbine components is well underway. Excavations also continue in preparation for the steel rebar structure and subsequent pouring of around 40 trucks of concrete to create each of the 66 turbine foundations. To date a total of 15 foundations have been excavated. Logistics: The Contractor expects to start moving equipment to site in the coming weeks. Given the high volume of equipment and limited road capacity this will have to be stretched out over a period of time. Using the specially imported turbine transport trucks a “dry run” of the trip from the Port of Coega to the Wind Farm was completed in May to help inform the contractor of likely bottlenecks during the transportation phase. No major constraints through to the turn-off onto Patryshoogte road were identified. Local Involvement: Employment Local employment and contract opportunities continue to rise with increases expected in June, July and August. The Contractor and subcontractors have reported that they will be hiring up to 120 people over the coming three months for positions such as general worker and building, bush clearing and plant search and rescue, steel fixing, concrete hands and shutter hands, brick and foundation work, and cable installation. The Jobseeker and Service Provider Databases are used as the primary resources for sourcing individuals. The Jobseeker Database now has more than 2200 people registered. Once again it must be made clear that jobs and contracts will be awarded on the basis of contractor needs, relevant skills, experience, BEE status, and cost effectiveness. With so many people on the databases in comparison to the jobs available, unfortunately only a small percentage of those who registered may be contacted, as the number of employment opportunities is obviously less than the number of registered people or business. (To be continued next week) .

Red. In last week’s issue regarding the Mr and Miss Gill article and caption, valuable information went missing in the carrying over of information between the computer and printing process. We gladly place the mentioned article again. Sorry for the inconvenience caused. Ed.

IT’S A RED CARPET AFFAIR: MR & MISS GILL 2013 SOMERSET EAST It was indeed a red carpet affair! The tables were stylishly decorated, the stage looked beautiful and the red carpet was waiting for the contestants… The 10 ladies and 10 gents from the Gill College 2013 Grade 12 class looked stunning – they did their school proud! The pre-judging took place on Wednesday afternoon where all the finalists had to wear school uniform. On Thursday the evening kicked off with a very entertaining show by the finalists dressed as celebrities. AFTER THIS BLACK BYRD STARTED ROCKING THE HALL!!! AND OH BOY, DID THEY ROCK! These three ladies are entertainers, both with moves and their voices. The next item was the smart/casual category where the finalists once again made a real impact on the audience. The judges had a challenging job indeed! While the finalists changed into evening wear, Black Byrd once again left the crowd breathless . What an experience! The crowd was awesome and did their bit of entertaining as well! When the curtains opened for the final event, these princes and princesses who are called grade 12’s, had the whole audience stunned into silence by their beauty

All FREE Bookings 042-243 1925 Somerset East 30/6/27/4/25 eitc

SUID-AFRIKAANSE NASIONALE BLOEDDIENS

Posbus 549, Cradock, 5880

DEMONSTRASIEMODELLE

Donderdag / Thursday 6 Junie/June 2013

Wie vind baat by geskenkte bloed? · 27% Generiese mediese gevalle: bv. bloedkankerbehandeling, MIV, Anemiebehandeling, ens. LANGAMED ASSISTS J.A. NCACA PRIMARY Langamed Emergency Management Services in Cradock recently donated two fully equiped First Aid Boxes to J.A. Ncaca Primary School in Lingelihle. The well-being and first aid care of the learners at the school is of utmost importance to the staff end SGB. Mr Hugo Barendse from Langamed will engage in a basic first aid course for the learners and staff members next term. This basic training will assist the learners and staff in decision making and basic treatment whenever an emergency situation is experienced on the school premises. The two fully equipped first aid boxes donated by Langamed, will be kept in a safe and locked, but easy accessible place in the administration block of the school. Specific staff members in each grade will then have access to the keys to get to the first aid boxes, whenever there is an emergency. The parents of the learners at J.A. Ncaca P.S. can now be assured that their children will be well looked after and taken care of in an emergency situation.

MEJUFFROU MIDDELLANDE GEKIES

Stapels swart sakke in Coetzeestraat.

GROOT TAK SKEUR VAN BOOM AF MIDDELBURG Voor Huis Karee groei twee groot kareebome.

“The evening came and it was time for the service to start. I must confess, it is awesome to see so many men together singing, and all of this for our God! The service was great and I enjoyed every moment of it. After the service they asked that we must end the day with (Onse Vader) Our Heavenly Father. When I heard this I knew in my heart that trouble is on the way and that tears will be flowing. This was one of Adele’s favourite songs and we have sung the song at the funeral service. When we started singing I could feel the presence of the Holy Spirit around me and felt like I was going to explode. The ground started to vibrate with sounds as all the men sang the song as best as they could and the rivers were flowing down my cheeks. Later that night I felt so good when we arrived at the guest house that I could not explain the feeling. I went outside and sat on the patio and remember just staring at the night sky thinking what an Awesome God we have. He has been with me the whole time and I was just too blind to see it!” Ons is almal sprakeloos oor wat die Here hierdie jaar by KMMC 2013 gedoen het. Hoe vat mens iets so GROOTS so HEILIG soos hierdie naweek vas? Woorde ontbreek. Groete Karoo Mighty Men Komitee

Jilian Rafferty geskakel word by 049 84 21692.

Pieter Erasmus skink vir Bertie Meyburgh ‘n glas wyn. Ander stel belang in die wyn in die voorgrond.

BEKENDE INWONERS VESTIG HULLE ELDERS

LEGAL COSTS DOUBLE IN MUNICIPALITIES TO R130 MILLION Municipalities in the Eastern Cape racked up an astounding R130 million in legal fees during the 2011/12 financial year. This amount was more than double the costs of R60,45 million recorded in 2010/11. Until there are real consequences for poor performance by municipal officials, the citizens of the Eastern Cape can forget about decent service delivery. I will be asking the MEC for Local Government, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, to answer in the House during oral question time in the Provincial Legislature on 19 June 2013 what action has been taken against employees in municipalities who through negligence caused litigation and how this can be prevented in the future. A response to a question I posed to the MEC revealed that: · As at 31 October 2012 73 matters had been recorded at the Mthatha High court. · Of the 24 municipalities that reported their legal fee costs, King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality recorded the highest legal costs of R 9,86 million. (These costs were attributed to defend a matter where the municipality was being sued by parents of children who were burnt from a negligently exposed electricity cable.) · The beleaguered Kouga Municipality ran up legal fees to the tune of R4, 2 million. (These fees were incurred by the municipality defending the actions of wrongfully suspended official Fred Dennis which cost them R1, 5 million and recently the wrongful suspensions of two other officials.) · No statistics could be obtained for cases involving municipalities from the other High Courts namely Bhisho, Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth. For the reply, click · here According to the MEC his department has intervened by placing legal advisors in 22 municipalities. However, this is not working and is causing double legal costs because these advisors have to appoint professional practitioners to handle these cases. Furthermore, during a meeting of the Eastern Cape Local Government Legal Advisor’s Forum, provincial Auditor General Singa Ngqwala pointed out a 98% lack of consequences of poor performance and transgression in municipalities. The exorbitant legal costs incurred by municipalities, caused by negligence and incompetence, mean less money for service delivery. I will next week be asking for a full disclosure of details of every legal matter against municipalities during the budget meeting of the department and how we can resolve these matters quickly with minimal further cost. It is clear that the anger in communities over the lack of accountability in their municipalities by the ruling party can only be addressed if they, as voters, take the first step by making their voices heard by voting DA in 2014.

The Editor. I attended a National Orphans and Vulnerable Children and Youth (OVCY) Conference in Durban 27- 30 May with 1600 delegates. During this conference, the Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini, was one of the speakers. For the duration of the 3 days, I was surprisingly impressed by what was said by the speakers, and done in South Africa by the government. Reports and statistics gave evidence of the latter. My overall realization was that the best critics are those who are illinformed rather, as the government motto states it: ‘Together we can do more,’ get involved, and the social issues of our

!

country will be addressed. Yesterday, 4th June, the local Blue Crane Hospice received a visit from a delegation of the Department of Health’s Bisho office. For the duration of the day, the Hospice’s governance, patient care and financial activities were scrutinized by this delegation of 5 people. And again, my personal, one-sided opinion was changed as the hours passed. They did not leave a stone untouched and left after they had given constructive feedback. Well done! I’m positive about our future and intend to follow Ghandi’s advice: “Be the change you want to see.” Strauss Joubert Somerset East

Die SAL tref my. Daar staan nie: Moet My eer of Mag My eer nie, maar SAL. Hoekom? Omdat dit ‘n brandende begeerte in jou binneste word. Jou hele wese wil Hom loof en prys en eer. Dis asof jy soos Thomas wil sê: My Here, en my God. As daar gestaan het: Moet My eer, was dit ‘n gedwonge eer.

Here loof vir Sy troue liefde, Sy wonderdade” Oeps. Daarsit! My Here, en my God. In verwondering wil ek sê: my Here en my God. Groetnis Sarah. N.S.

ADELAIDE NEWS/NUUS Paul C.P.A. Odendaal

UPDATING THE PUBLIC ON BCRM MATTERS SOMERSET EAST With the appointment of the Blue Crane Route Municipality’s Communications Officer some considerable time ago we anticipated that municipal news, whether Good, Bad or Ugly, would be conveyed to the residents of our area on a regular basis. One of the obvious channels of communication through which this could take place is via our local newspaper, the Somerset Budget and Pearston Advocate. This has unfortunately not happened and we have now taken it upon ourselves to start a column to communicate at least some of the goingson in our municipality to the readers of this publication. Pipes replace In this issue we would like to bring the community of the “Hill Area” up to date with the progress on the almost completed project of replacing the asbestos cement pipes which, over the years, have burst at regular intervals. Ask Mr Hansie Els and he will show you a comprehensive list of dates on which these pipes have burst in close proximity to his home! The contractor in this almost R1.2 million project, funded by DWAF, is the company Civil Construction & Skills Training. As said earlier, this project is almost complete with testing of the new pipes underway. As in most projects hiccups occur, this one being no exception. It has been found that a section of pipes that was laid could not withstand the considerable testing pressure, which I understand to be three times that of the normal operating pressure. These unacceptable pipes are presently being replaced after which further testing will be carried out before the pipes are put into commission. Once this happens hopefully the bursting of pipes problem of the area will be something of the past. Water While on the subject of water reticulation in this area it is appropriate to make mention of the refurbishment and sealing of the “Hill Reservoirs”. This project has been undertaken by a contractor going by the name of Inkoleko Trading and is also funded by DWAF to the tune of R188 100. In recent months it has only been possible to partially fill these reservoirs due to excessive leakage when full. A further limiting factor of the use of these reservoirs is that they have had to be manually filled and it is hoped that, during the refurbishment thereof, a telemetry system will be installed. Confirmation of this has however, as yet, not been forthcoming. Once these reservoirs are in full operation they will act as a reserve or buffer supply for this area should the supply to the reservoir, for any reason, be interrupted. Aeroville Good news for the residents of Aeroville is the announcement at the Council meeting held in Cookhouse this past Friday that, after a recent visit to Somerset East by a delegation from the Department of Education, the long awaited construction of the junior school in Aeroville is once again on the cards albeit probably on a different site. This is wonderful news for which we express our thanks to the Department. Although no dates have been set as yet, we look forward to seeing progress on this long-awaited project. Report We will endeavour to report matters of interest in this column as and when we can. They will not always be “good”, as in this article, because the “bad” and “ugly” will also inevitably surface! We take this opportunity to offer our assistance in matters of concern to our residents who can forward their concerns in writing directly to the Municipal Manager (P.O.Box 21) with a copy to [email protected] who will pass it on to a colleague or official best positioned to address it. In next week’s column the status of other projects and the naming of members serving on the standing committees of our council will be reported.

BEDFORD CRANES TEACHES ADELAIDE RANGERS A RUGBY LESSON After the magnificent performance of Bedford Cranes against Adelaide Rangers I guess it’s safe to say “there is a new sheriff in town, and its name is Bedford Cranes. It’s becoming a real habit lately to report about the wonderful achievements of Bedford Cranes and the past weekend, 1 June 2013 will go down as a memorable day in the short history of Cranes. This team always knew that the game against Rangers would be a true measure of where we are standing in terms of our objectives. One of the original objectives was to make a lasting impression on all the teams competing in the Wellman-Harmse league and try to win at least a few games. Well the statement was made halfway against Wailers and the past weekend, Cranes showed their true champion spirit when they demolished Rangers 24-10, and to top it all this was done on the home field of Rangers in Adelaide with a very hostile crowd. Again it was the ever impressive forward pack lead magnificently by the veterans, Siya (Papish) Vena, Luzuko Ngoma and Bongani Mbali who were wonderfully supported by the new recruits, Malibongwe Nkahla, Sgege Olifant just to mention a few. And when they laid the foundation another veteran Siviwe (Diesel) Zakhe came to put the finishing touches to the performance. This solid foundation again set the scene for the electrifying backs to do their thing; here we have to mention the man- of- the- match performance that was played by yet another veteran, Randall (Ribo) Peters. But as he would say: “mister coach ‘n mens koop nie experience nie”. This guy is like very good wine, the older he gets the better he is becoming, this was evident on Saturday when he created numerous opportunities for both backs and forwards to torment the opposition. Amongst the backs we also have to mention a few individuals who played their hearts out. Here one thinks of the likes of Ken Malgas, playing out of position but still putting up a massive performance, Sihle Dayntyi, people this man has electrifying pace. Maybe we have to test him cause the way he had defenders grasping at air is not funny, then there is the ever impressive captain, Mbulelo Mbali, who led by example from the start right to the end. I guess now people have got no choice but to take note of Bedford Cranes, cause if they continue in this manner they will be the first team that plays only one year in a league and then get promotion. The scores of the games played were as follows: Bedford Cranes (2nd team) 0 - 33 Adelaide Rangers (2nd team) Bedford Cranes (1st team) 24 – 10 Adelaide Rangers (1st team) The team would like to thank the referees both Mr. Maddox Arends and his son Carlos for the magnificent manner in which both games were handled, the professional way in which all queries were handled and giving the rugby public a spectacle of entertaining rugby. Also thank you to the opposition Adelaide Rangers for giving us a hard fought battle; there sure are some sore bodies after that battle. We are looking forward to host you on our home ground. Then a BIGGG thank you to our very large group of travelling spectators. It was so nice to see so many Cranes supporters that actually made all that sacrifices to

Alles gebeur vandag baie vinniger as toe hy begin het. Democratic Alliance Youth Day Tournament fever mounts in Bedford

As Jesus Sy regmatige plek in ons lewens beklee, sal die wêreld vanself regkom!! travel to Adelaide to support their team. With you by our side we can only achieve greater heights. Next assignment vs. Somerset East Tigers (8 June 2013 at home, Slagpale toe) Kubho Cranes, Kubho, Rise Cranes, Rise………………………………..

Daarom laat Manny se afsterwe ‘n leemte in ons gemeenskap.

CDK is 20 jaar oud!

FORT BEAUFORT NEWS/NUUS By S. Sparks It is with sadness that we report on the passing away in an East London hospital recently of Mrs Mary Botha. She had endured ill-health for some time and had been hospitalized for two months. She was 47 years old and leaves her husband, Hannes, and a young family of 3 children. She was a well-known personality in this area, having worked as the receptionist of the Savoy Hotel for the past 25 years. “We have missed her presence here greatly,” said Mrs. Desrae Burger, the hotel’s manageress Hannes, the longest serving member of our Museum’s staff, is also a well-known member of our community. To him and their children we extend our heartfelt sympathy. ---------Churchgoers in Durban Street last Sunday morning were shocked to see that a large part of the front wall of the historical home of Professor Wagenaar had been reduced to rubble during Saturday night. Although the house is very close to the wall, it was, fortunately, not damaged. The crash must have been a great shock for Professor Wagener and his son. We are grateful that they are safe and over the shock. ---------Fort Beaufort can be proud

of the achievements of some of its young sportsmen. Congratulations to the Grade 1 and 2 rugby boys of Yellowwoods Prep. for outstanding play in Grahamstown recently when they convincingly defeated St. Andrew’s Prep. team. Proud grandparents are Fanie and Jean Marx who’s grandson, Arno, has been selected for Midlands under 13 rugby. He is a Grade 6 pupil at the Fort Beaufort Primary School and is the son of André and Reneé Marx. Well done! ---------The Adelaide-Bedford area can be justifiably proud of three of its young people who all won bronze medals at the Comrades Marathon. They are Bruce Ross, Colin Bennett and Lauren van der Walt (formerly Lauren Ballantyne, the daughter of Allan and Lee Ballantyne). Congratulations to them. Well done! ------Mr Darren van Jaarsveld has won the sheep raffle in aid of the Thatcher Home. Darryn was formerly on the staff of Yellowwoods Pre., but is now teaching in East London. The sheep was donated by Mr. Jannie de Villiers of Charlgrove and the Thatcher Home greatly appreciates his generosity.

BEDFORD COUNTRY SCHOOL Learning and loving it! Bedford Country School participated in the SAC and DSG Youth Music Festival, in Grahamstown, last Friday, the 24th of May. Isabella Pringle, Liena van Niekerk and Daniel Bussiahn sang solo pieces in Spanish, French, Afrikaans and English. They all received glowing reviews from the adjudicators. Our Grade 1’s and 2’s played their recorders and gave a good account of themselves. We are all very proud of them. Our thanks to Mrs. Berna van Niekerk for her enthusiastic and dedicated work with our budding musicians. Early Saturday morning, saw the return to Grahamstown of all our Grade 1 and 2 learners. This time donning their rugby jerseys, hockey skirts and shin pads!! Our U8 boys played against St. Andrews Prep, Yellowwoods and Oatlands, winning, losing and drawing their matches respectively. Our “Bedford Bull Terriers” are thoroughly enjoying their participation in these minitournaments. Our U8 hockey girls played their 1st match of the season against St. Andrews Prep U9’s. Although they lost against Prep they thoroughly enjoyed the match and we were very proud of their tremendous teamwork and good sportsmanship. Well done girls!

TEKKIE TAX DAY SOMERSET EAST Dr Ngcipe Library celebrated “Tekkie Tax day” for child welfare, last Friday 31st May. The children were encouraged to wear their “tekkies” to the library and those who could afford the R10 for the sticker bought and wore their stickers with pride. Adelaide Round Table 194 Golf Day 2013 On Saturday the 25th of May , Adelaide Round Table hosted a very successful golf day. The format was a betterball stableford and 56 players took to the field. The course was in very good condition and the scores reflected it. Players from other clubs could not stop commenting on how good the greens were. We would like to extend a huge thank you to Craig Trethewey and his helpers for the sterling job that they have done. In the same breath we would also like to take the opportunity to thank Adelaide Golf Club in making available their facilities to us for the whole weekend. The golf day was well supported locally as well as players from Cradock, Fort Beaufort, Molteno, Port Elizabeth and Queenstown. We even had a professional golfer , currently playing on the Sunshine Tour, participating. Thank you to you guys as well, as we are well aware that the day would not have been possible without you. The results were as follow: First were Jaco Blom and Duppie du Preez (48 points) followed by H.Schreiber and F van Coppenhagen (47), J van Huysteen and E de Villiers (46), JP and Esna Prinsloo (46), J Bosman and C Trethewey (44), B Dewing and H Bosch (44). Two clubs were carded by M du Preez and J Blom. Congratulations to all the above mentioned players. Lastly but certainly not least we would like to thank all our sponsors for their generous contributions that they have made. Without sponsorship no golf day can happen. Thank you also to all the Tablers and Table ladies as well as 41ers and friends of table who helped during the course of the weekend.

GM FOODS ARE SCARY Did you know that over 80% of the white maize and as much as 93% of the yellow maize crops planted in South Africa this past season was genetically modified seed? 90% of soya bean plantings were GM. All this without our consent and no right to know what we are eating. Good reason for the protest marches which took place on 25 May, the purpose being to urge governments worldwide to stop Monsanto, the industrial GM seed giant, from taking over the global food supply and to demand the labelling of foods containing GM ingredients. Very few South Africans seem to realise how serious the situation is and that they have unknowingly been eating GM foods since 1998. Many have no idea what genetic engineering is or that South Africa is the only country in the world where genetically engineered maize is eaten as a daily staple. Everywhere else it is grown primarily for the animal feed and biofuel industry. Are GM foods safe? Consensus amongst independent scientists, after numerous independent studies, is that GM foods are not safe and a lot more research needs to be done. Scientists know that a very small change in a chemical bond is enough to change the way that compound functions. But money talks, and scientists keep quiet. It’s not just that we don’t know what the health implications are of the foreign gene inserted into the maize seed, (although it is suspected that the exponential increase in allergies of late could be attributed to this) but it’s also the possibility of residues of glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, in the GM foods we’re eating, that are cause for major concern. Our government does not have the capacity to monitor this. In a research article entitled: “Long-term toxicity of a Roundup herbicide and a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize” the results of a 2 year study conducted at the French University of Caen, were reported. This was the longest independent study to date, done on rats fed Monsanto’s Roundup-Ready maize. The study showed severe impacts on liver and kidney functioning, hormonal imbalance and shortened life spans. Within four months the rats developed massive cancerous tumours. The endocrine-disrupting effects of Roundup and the fact that it is toxic and potentially carcinogenic to humans has long been known. The fact that half of our maize is the Round-Up Ready variety, therefore tolerant to this herbicide, has serious implications for South Africans, particularly those whose staple diet is maize. The use of Roundup in SA has rocketed from 12 million litres in 2006, to 20 million litres at present! Similarly, from 2007 to 2011 glyphosate imports increased by 177%. In other words just as over-prescribing of antibiotics has resulted in antibiotic-resistant “superbugs”, over-use of Roundup has probably resulted in “superweeds” that have become resistant to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup. As a result our government, in its wisdom, has approved the importation of genetically modified maize seed that will be resistant to an even more lethal herbicide, namely 2,4 D, banned in virtually every other country in the world and the active ingredient in Agent Orange used with ongoing devastating effects in the Vietnam war. Do you have a choice? Not if you eat processed foods. Up until 2011 there was no obligation to label GM foods and provide consumers with information to make a choice. This was supposed to change in 2011 when the Consumer Protection Act came into being. According to the law, all foods containing 5% or more GM content must be labelled. Despite this law, only a handful of companies are beginning to label, the majority are not.

The African Centre for Biosafety is our watchdog, fighting for the labelling of GM foods. In March 2012, the ACB had four products tested by researchers at Free State University, for GM content. Nestle Cerelac Honey infant cereal. Future Life Energy Meal, Impala Maize Meal and Bokomo’s Wheat-free Pronutro, were all found to have a high GM maize or soya content. Latest news from ACB is that Purity’s Cream of Maize is 56.25% GM maize and Purity Baby First 71.47% maize. Some good has come from the release of these results to the public in that Nestle no longer uses any GM ingredients and Future Life has promised to be GMOfree by the third quarter of this year. So in small ways, bit by bit, company by company, battles are being won, but not the war. Until labelling is enforced, if ever, what foods on the supermarket shelves in South Africa do we need to be wary of? Maize – e.g. mielie meal, breakfast cereals containing maize, corn chips, thickeners and any processed foods containing maize as an additive. Because over 80% of maize grown in SA is GM, whenever you see maize on the label its likely to be GM. Soya – e.g. soya milk, soya mince. Many breads and cereals contain soya. It is also the basis for many food additives eg. lecithin. Close to 100% of soya grown here is GM. Cotton – cottonseed oil is used in some processed products, as the oil in canned seafoods and to fry fast foods. Cotton grown in this country is 100% GM. Canola – e.g. cooking oil or margarine. South Africa does not grow GM canola but may import these processed canola products from the USA or Canada. This begs the question: If Adelaide Round Table 194, tablers’ wifes, 41ers and friends the GM industry, in particular Monsanto, is so sure that GM products are safe then why is it fighting tooth and nail to ensure GM foods are not We hosted our steak night for the golf weekend on the 24th of May at the Adelaide labelled? golf club. DEDICATED HARDWORK PAY-OFF!! LAZINESS DOES NOT PAY IT GIVES YOU EXCUSES! BY WILLIAM Lucy Mafilika is a succesful mama. We visited the few farms over the weekend with agriculture inspectors from the government. We are so excited to see some of the black emerging farmers doing so well, the likes of mama Lucy Mafilika. Look at her lifestock. A very committed and dedicated woman. We took a drive to Pearston and Cookhouse. We are disappointed in what we have discovered at some of these farms bought by the government. I will give feedback later. A bad bad image. That is why people are shouting at each other, because the farms are not productive. Again a question was raised about the issue of who qualify to get a farm. How can a government employer receive subsidy in buying a farm? That is wrong according to the officials. On the 6 and 7 June the public protector is in town. I’ve got an appointment with them.

please learn and call Mr. Gxothiwe for advice and organise workshops so that they can be committed. That was the call I made. I salute and encourage a dedicated, hard worker Ayanda Mehlo. His farm is productive and he created employment for our people. It is not about black/white. Mine is about the people and the commitment that I want to see from the emerging farmers. Mr. Lloyd James has his own ideas. Not on behalf of the organisation. We need people who are educated in approach as well as in adressing our people. Not people who are carried away by the excitement of the moment. When our president Mandela said, I quote: “I fought agaisnt black domination and I fought against white domination, it is an ideal I’m prepared to die for. If needs be!! I love Mr. Lloyd James for reporting and giving clarity to the public. I will advise the chairman to be very close to the public and his organisation. Think about the people first. I care damnless what an individual say about me. You might swear at or hurt me. I will continue in serving our people. I will be the voice of the voiceless. I’m doing this not to earn something from anyone. The public must know. They must speak, please Mr. Editor publish the letter. This is in the interest of the public. I will always write and inform the people. Probably it is on that note I’m given

By William Yes, I am delighted, at last, to have someone who responded to my article. But I feel dissappointed when you don’t respond with facts. Especially when you call yourself a leader of a progressive productive organisation of Blue Crane Black Farmers. It is very hipocritical of Mr Lloyd James, the chairperson, to say I’m against black development. That is pure nonsense. I have to defend my government against corruption and nepotism. I will never protect small self interest of “individuals”, but I will support “individuals” who are making a difference in the lives of the poor. When I wrote the article about the emerging farmers, I wanted accountability and people who are responsible in creating unemployment. I make it clear that I’m against exploitation of our people by those like Lloyd who only care for themselves. If you are a leader, leading an organisation such as the one of Mr. James, consultation and communication, those are the pillars of the chairman in good leadership. I will support a farmer who is productive and creating employment for our people. Last year I wrote an article congratulating an emerging farmer who won an award as the best farmer in Eastern Cape Province. He went on to win nationally. That is a black farmer, Mr. Gxothiwe, a humble and hard-working farmer and I said all emerging farmers must

News from the Blue Crane Route Tourism Office With the Biltong Festival only six weeks away, all our accommodation in town is pretty well fully booked, a big disappointment for those people reading and hearing about the Festival and deciding that they would like to come. If you have rooms or a flat that you will have empty over 12th and 13th July, and would like to let the space to visitors, let me know so that I can give your details to people making enquiries. You will be able to speak to the people yourself, and make your own arrangements. ****** Nicky Dilima, who is in charge of the Mountain Biking at the Boschberg Tourism Hub, is making a name for himself; and for our town at the same time; in the Mountain Biking world. Nicky went to Port Elizabeth to take part in the Walmer Downs Family Centre Fun Mountain Bike race on 25th May, and came away with a gold medal for his age group. His cycling did not stop there; Nicky had his wallet stolen, and was unable to pay for transport back to Somerset East, so rode his Mountain bike the whole way back, taking seven hours for this! Nicky plans to compete in as many races as he can manage, and at these races he promotes Somerset East and our Boschberg Trails to other Mountain bikers he meets. Well done, Nicky! ****** The Museum Board of Trustees for our two Museums has been in place for a little over two years, and has made great progress in getting everything back on track, after a period when there was a lack of leadership and funding. On Monday 1st July, the Board will be holding an AGM, at 17.00, at the Boschberg Tourism Hub. They will be reporting on progress made, and plans for the future of our Museums. If you have an interest in the wellbeing of our Museums, your are welcome to attend so that you can be informed about the wellbeing of these iconic features of our area. ****** Friends of the Museum will be meeting at the Walter Battiss Art Museum on Wednesday 12th June, at 15.00. ****** ROS TURNER BLUE CRANE TOURISM OFFICER 042 243 1448 / 073 698 6539 [email protected]

RHINO KNIGHTS JUNE 2013

A month on the road…. Wow, what an amazing time we had since leaving Durban on the 1st May. Heading out from Kainon School in Westville with a huge crowd gathered to wish us well was overwhelming to say the least. The last 6 months of preparation have been hectic and when the day of departure finally came, emotions were flooding over. Happiness, relief, some anxiety… The route over the first week has taken us from Durban to Richmond, through the Coleford Reserve and to Underberg where we spent a wonderful time with great friends! In Underberg the freezing cold arrived and has not left us until getting to Cradock yesterday. Waking up after a night in the tent with frost all around makes getting changed a rather challenging and funny undertaking… Whilst trying to put my one foot through tight leggings, balancing on the other foot to avoid the freezing ground with my bare toes was reason for hysterical laughter more than once. To cycle in cold conditions is difficult, my chest gets tight and muscles become cold very quickly. It is hard to decide whether to wear another layer or not, when paddling uphill you start to sweat but going downhill the extra layer is more than welcome and needed! names and labelled by I have never been one for the cold and this has been the those wo claim they are biggest challenge for me on this stretch. The physical there for the people, whilst exercise and demand on my body has been manageable exploiting them. I have creand so far I am coping well. Travelling through Matatiele ated more enemies than and Mount Fletcher along portions of the mountainous friends by writing. It is my Freedom Challenge route we reached Rhodes over the wish and intention to forhighest pass in South Africa! Naudés Pass measures ward an invitation so that 2500m above sea level and at the top the wind nearly we can meet and debate blew me off my bike. After the climb we dropped down this issue once and for all. for about 25km into Rhodes and from there through Barkly

East, Sterkstroom, Tarkastad and the beginning of the Karoo to Cradock, Willowmore, Outdshoorn, Calitzdorp. Heading in the Cape Wine region we travelled through the stunning areas of Montagu, Villiersdorp, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. We have travelled through some very remote areas without reception for many days and I am writing this from Durbanville / Cape Town having covered 2000kms so far. Today is a physical rest day to recuperate strength and energy and to catch up on all your media and communication. As part of the awareness campaign we have been conducting a research questionnaire asking conservation organizations, individuals, reserves, environmental science students, etc what they believe are the problems with the poaching crisis and what possible solutions are. This has been a complete eye opener for all of us, disturbing at times, and the more questionnaires are being filled out, the more we realize the value of it. After the completion of the campaign we will evaluate this and get involved in active antipoaching measures. Self-funding this campaign has been very challenging and Lloyd has flown back to Durban for a few days to sell our car to keep us on the road! In George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay we had some fantastic events organized (A trail run by Nature Sport Company, a visit and presentation to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Saasveld campus and a fundraiser dinner at the Grand Café & Rooms) and we are very grateful for the support we received. A heartfelt thank you to the organizers!!! Tomorrow Rappi, myself and Mr P will move on and very soon we will be up the West Coast into Namibia! Thank you to everyone that has helped us so far! As always without the generosity and kindness of the South African people this would not be possible! Stay well & Happy! Isabel

LAND REHABILITATION SUCCESS AT CAMDEBOO NATIONAL PARK

Alfie Blume (left), principal of J.A. Ncaca Primary School received an interactive E-Beam Projection System from Vodacom Millionaires. André du Preez (right) installed the system at the school.

WELCOME SURPRISE FOR J.A. NCACA SCHOOL CRADOCK The principal of J.A. Ncaca Primary School was over the moon when he received a phone call from Vodacom Millionaires Headoffice in Johannesburg last week. The friendly lady that phoned him had good news. She explained the J.A. Ncaca would be given E-Beam Projection Interactive Board to the value of well over R10 000. The donation included a LG Data Projector, a Lenovo laptop, Software for the laptop, a white board, an E-Beam device and marker pen and a 3G Dongle, as well as training in this device. There are already 600 schools countrywide that use these products. Now what is the E-Beam Projection System? The EBeam projection system is a compact, portable and easy-to-use interactive device that turns any flat surface into an interactive whiteboard. How does the E-Beam Projection System work? Attach the eBeam receiver to any flat surface, aim your digital projector and away you go. The portable receiver mounts in any corner of the board and supports up to 2.4m X 1.2m projection area. The system includes a two-button stylus that allows one-touch access to left and right click functionality, as well as showing and hiding the tool palette. According to Mr. Blume this device will be of great help to all teachers that will be trained to use this device. The 3G Dogle allows the user to immediately enter internet and draw information, pictures etc. by the click of a button. J.A. Ncaca is really proud of the improvements made at the school so far and by continuing like this, will become one of the leading primary school in the district. Anybody who wishes to visit the school or make any contributions whatsoever, is very welcome to contact the principal at 0727662400 or during school hours at 048 881 4446.

Lucie Bouwer was deel van hierdie eerste groep.

The rehabilitation of degraded land in Camdeboo National Park outside GraaffReinet is taking shape – just over a year since the project was started in April 2012. The work is being done as part of the Working on Land programme, with the aim of rehabilitating degraded land within the Park’s borders. This initiative, which is part of the Expanded Public Works Programme, has been managed by the Biodiversity Social Projects unit in the Park. Some of the innovative methods that have been applied in the Park’s arid system have had amazing results, much to the surprise of many professionals who have been visiting the rehabilitated sites. Park Manager, Peter Burdett, says in a recent review of the Park Management Plan, the rehabilitation of degraded land was recognised as the highest conservation priority for the Park. “What is now the Camdeboo National Park was utilised as town commonage since the days of early settlement until the Karoo Nature Reserve was proclaimed in 1976. Oversized camps, few watering points and continuous selective grazing by tenants resulted in the reduction of ground cover and severe erosion in many areas of the commonage,” says Burdett. Invasion of the grassveld by undesirable woody plants characteristic of the Karoo, destruction of the Spekboom veld and the complete alteration of the veld types due to desiccation of the soils were further effects of unplanned grazing and overexploitation, hence the need for rehabilitation, he says. Among others, two of the methods employed include yellow metal induced landscape transformation and ponding. “In the aforementioned, a machine such as a front-end loader is used to remodel a landscape that has been riven by erosion into something with a more natural appearance. Some effort is then expended to break down chunks and rake the surface smooth to ensure close contact fit with a material called bio-jute (similar to sack cloth) which is pegged to the ground surface at regular intervals,” Burdett says. This material prevents movement of the underlying soil during a thunderstorm but at the same time the spaces between the weave allow plants to germinate and grow through it. Rehabilitation of the vegetation cover can be sped up by sowing locally harvested seeds of grasses, shrubs or trees. Regular visitors to the Park’s game viewing area will have noticed that a previously bare area on the left hand side of the road, after crossing the Pienaars River, has been “ponded” by the digging of a multitude of small hollows with an approximately 200 litre capacity. The area inside these so-called ponds has been densely brushpacked. “The theory behind this method is that ponds accumulate water during a storm which would otherwise have run off. This water then filters into the soil over an extended period of time increasing the effectiveness of rainfall. Plants which germinate have an increased chance of survival due to the shaded micro-climate while destructive foraging by browsers is excluded by the thorns or brush-packing,” says Burdett. A large site in the eastern section of the park at Skuinsveldhoek was given this treatment with very good results. In addition to this many visitors to the Park will also have noticed that many of the bare areas along the road to the old Winterhoek homestead have been covered with the dead and shrivelled leaves of the alien Agave plants which used to grow in rows along the road, before they were treated with herbicide. The Working on Land project has used three local SMME’s, who employ 39 people on the project. Their effort will hopefully result in the final rehabilitation of 69 hectares of seriously degraded land within the Park.

POST RETIEF BIKE RALLY 17-19 MAY 2013 An immense amount of planning went into the Annual Post Retief Bike Rally. This exclusive rally only caters for 60 riders and has become increasingly popular with riders often booking a year in advance. The cool Friday of our weekend event made for stunning riding conditions for the riders who hailed from as far as Stellenbosch and Ficksburg with many others from East London, Port Elizabeth, Humansdorp, Fort Beaufort, Somerset East, Adelaide and not to forget about Pretoria, Durban and Graaff-Reinet. This enjoyable pastime attracts like-minded souls to the back roads, seldom or partially used tracks all with a common goal. – Post Retief (http:// www.postretief.co.za), a farming community, not unlike Die Hell, nestled deep in the Winterberg Mountains. This is truly adventure biking country at its best with no fewer than 9 routes traversing the mountain passes and valleys. Cool in the mornings and evenings with stunning days, the local folk were accused of outdoing themselves with a Steak Braai on the Friday evening and Lamb Chops and Boerewors etc on the Saturday evening and other delicious fare to fill in the gaps. The Goodies Bags were well received and the spot prizes created a great buzz. The 2013 route took the Adventurers down the escarpment to the hamlet of Balfour, through the foothills of the Katberg and then up the old Katberg Passe into the Cathcart district, behind the Elandsberg, thro’ stunning autumn vistas to Hogsback. At the Edge Restaurant the juiciest burgers and refreshments were served! Fuelled up, man and machine, KTMs, BMWs, Hondas, Yamahas, etc. turned their hocks on the Hogs – the cosy Post Retief pub beckoned once again! The braziers, indoor braai and jetmaster kept everybody warm until closing with most of the riders braving the elements in their tents spread haphazardly around the lawns. (Others opted for the warmer confines of mattresses in the hall.) Great destination, awesome views, stunning meals and sought-after company are the reports received!!! See you again soon for a New Adventure Route 2014!!! By Barry James

SAPS Media Release EASTERN CAPE DETECTIVES POSITIONED 2ND IN THE COUNTRY The Eastern Cape Detective Services Unit of the South African Police (SAPS) Service has been positioned second in the country for the sterling work they have done for the 2012/2013 period. The top performing cluster in the province is Graaff-Reinet and it is followed by Aliwal North and Willowmore. GraaffReinet was rated 76.5% in terms of performance while Aliwal North was rated 75,58%. The number one performing police station is Elands Height from the Mount Fletcher cluster which scored 92,82%, followed by Humansdorp cluster’s Hankey at 87,43% and the Grahamstown cluster’s Riebeeck East at 86,05%. He said they have managed to rise to this position through motivating and rewarding staff for their hard work. “From this office, when good work is reported, we make sure we acknowledge the member through a letter of commendation and an application for monetary reward. “Our key message to the commanders is get involved with your members to ensure a happy workforce,” said Brigadier McLaren. He added that another key to their success was to require the detectives to be accountable for their work. “We have tightened the screws on responsibility attached to every detective in order for professional ethos to prevail in detectives,” Brigadier McLaren explained. He congratulated all his members who played a role in increasing and improving the performance of this province and said that they deserved a pat on the back. FORT BEAUFORT POLICE RECOVER A HIGH JACKED VEHICLE On Thursday 30th at about 12:00 members of Fort Beaufort Police and Net Star Vehicle Tracker System recovered a vehicle which was stolen from New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, in Fort Beaufort.

Kom wees deel. Sien julle daar! ********** We often find that people get aboard our Newspaper in writing articles about something they love and want to see happening in our Blue Crane Route area. It shows they care and are proud citizens. A community leader and one who cares about what is happening in our Blue Crane Route area, is “William”, who has written articles in our newspaper for a long, long time. It shows that he cares and is “speaking out”, especially on corruption and injustice in our systems. He is not afraid to speak out. We admire people like William, although he is making enemies among the groups that are feathering their

own nests. Keep it up William! We need more people like you fighting corruption and to be a faithful watchdog. Those that are doing wrong, must know we are “watching” them. May God lead and bless you! ************** Our local Pound is non existant and will be used for another purpose. In the meantime, while there is no Pound, the Stock owners have taken over with their attitude of “nobody will stop us”. The untouchables of this country of ours. Even pigs, goats and cattle have taken over our Main Street. They run free. Like “free range chickens” on the farmyard. Incredible! A motorist travelling that road every day, coming into town from his smallholding, told our editor that motorists at the entrance to town, from Aeroville side, must be very, very careful during daytime and at night due to free roaming animals in the road. Have you seen the poor dogs from townships, coming into town to feed at the places where meat is being braaied for customers? Hungry because there is nothing for them to eat in the townships. Our land of milk and honey! Wow.

SOMERSET-OOS Verval, verval, verval. Hopelik gou weer.

The heading reads “The good, the bad, the ugly”. Please read the article of what is happening in our town, especially when it comes to our notorious Water Department. Wonderful how everything falls into place when you get a much broader picture of what is happening here and the rest of the Country. The things that are happening here on a

very small scale is happening all over. Thank you for the DA councillors that are walking that “extra mile”. Will the ANC councillors do something similiar, is the million dollar question? Our editor knows the answer to that question! He has been begging for transparency from mayors and councillors, for many, many years. But to no avail. Just empty promises. ************* Ons leef in tye waarin ons uiters versigtig moet wees.

Tyd raak min.

Know your rules: The putting green - If any part of your golf ball is touching the closely mown and prepared area of grass defined as the green, it is “on the green”. When your ball is on the green, you may brush away or pick up leaves and other loose impediments on the line of your putt with your hand, a club or fan them with a cap or towel -but please don’t ever press anything down while doing so. (Dew and frost are not considered to be loose impediments). You may lift and clean your ball once it is on the green, but always mark your ball by placing a small coin or other marker behind it when you want to pick it up or clean it or get it out of another player’s way. Remember to replace it in the exact same spot before you play. You are allowed to to repair ball-marks or old pitchmarks if they are within your line of putt, but you may not repair marks made by spikes or shoes. Don’t ever test the surface of the green by rolling or scraping the surface. If your ball is hanging on the lip of the hole and you can’t believe it hasn’t actually dropped, the rules require you to walk to it without reasonable delay and then allow an additional 10 seconds wait before you have to tap it in. If you wait longer and the ball falls in, you have to add a penalty stroke. The standard two-shot penalty in strokeplay or loss of hole in matchplay applies when you contravene one of these rules.

Framesby se verdediging was rotsvas. Welgedaan Wolramme! Marlow se ander spanne het soos volg gevaar: Marlow 2de-Span wen Framesby 2de-Span (29-5) Marlow 3de-Span wen Framesby 3de-Span (12-3) Marlow 4de-Span wen Framesby 4de-Span (26-11) Marlow 0/16A-Span verloor teen Framesby 0/16A-Span (22-38) Marlow 0/16B-Span verloor teen Framesby 0/16B-Span (0-13) Marlow 0/16C-Span verloor teen Framesby 0/16C-Span (25-30) Marlow 0/15A-Span wen Framesby 0/15A-Span (18-15) Marlow 0/15B-Span verloor teen Framesby 0/15B-Span (10-32) Marlow 0/14A-Span wen Framesby 0/14A-Span (14-5) Marlow 0/14B-Span wen Framesby 0/14B-Span (17-10)
