A Welcome Message from the President Congratulations to our 2013 Convention Team, especially Janet Gula, Director of Convention Services, for planning and executing this beautiful Convention. Conventions are a huge undertaking and require many hours daily from the team over a period of many months. As participants, we have many entertaining as well as educational experiences ahead of us. We extend our sincere appreciation to Janet and all other volunteers. Without their dedication this Convention would not be possible. As we enjoy the multi-faceted adventure of Convention, 2013, let us consider our beloved Federation in the context of Washington, Capitol of the United States. Our organization is founded upon the same set of core values providing equal representation for all who wish to research dolls of every description. This Convention provides each member club with equal representation at the Annual Meeting. Let us also ponder the story of First Lady, Helen (Nellie) Taft. As an individual she stepped forward through her role as First Lady to support her mission, fundamental democratic rights for all citizens. The United Federation of Doll Clubs must step forward to support its mission to protect and preserve dolls for future study and enjoyment. We are the only national organization to encourage collectors from all over the world to join together to accomplish this critical undertaking. It is easy when we meet in our own clubs to lose sight of the mission of our organization in our joy of interacting with each other and sharing our dolls with our local doll family. We are reminded in this dynamic city of our obligation to support the goal of UFDC, a national program strong enough to inform all about our mission. Being a member of UFDC comes with the responsibility to support the national organization. While we can assist other charities, we must keep focused on the old adage, Charity begins at home. While other charities are worthy, no other charity is committed to support the preservation of dolls, so significant to us all. Let us be inspired by women such as Helen Taft who despite failing health willingly stepped forward to promote the critical issues of her day. Helen Taft has left us all a beautiful bouquet of cherry blossoms. Members of UFDC must leave behind a strong national organization with members committed to study, protect and preserve dolls, the unique record of the social history of our civilization.

Ada Diedrich, President ~2~

A Few Words from Your Convention Coordinator The first time I visited Washington, D.C. was also the first time I attended a UFDC national convention. I will never forget my first impressions of Washington. Seeing the iconic landmarks and the sheer scale of the buildings was astonishing. Visiting the treasures held in the Smithsonian museums was remarkable. No less impressive was the UFDC convention itself. Walking into the salesroom for the first time was both an overwhelming and magical experience. I never would have anticipated during that visit that years later I would find myself in the position of Convention Coordinator! This position has been both a challenge and an incredible learning experience. I have been helped along the way by my fellow officers, Linda Edward and Loretta Nardone and our wonderful staff in Kansas City. Sheryl Sunderman, our Financial Manager, has been of tremendous assistance. I know all our members join me in thanking our retiring UFDC President, Ada Diedrich. Her positive leadership has been an inspiration to all those who have had the pleasure of working with her and she leaves behind a strong organization and a lasting legacy for all of us to ensure continues. It would be impossible to have a UFDC convention without all our hardworking and knowledgeable volunteers. Long before convention begins many of our members are hard at work. Once convention starts it is a volunteer army that makes sure it all runs perfectly. I thank each and every one of our incredible volunteers for their many contributions! Helen Taft was the 27th First Lady of the United States. She was a true visionary who was responsible for planting the cherry trees in Washington and starting the tradition of first ladies donating their inaugural ball gowns to the Smithsonian where they are still on display at the Museum of American History. She also experienced a debilitating stroke in the first months of her husband’s Presidency and yet continued to persevere to both support her husband and also to realize her own goals for the capitol city. Her spirit is a reminder of what can be accomplished when passion and hard work combine. It reminds me in many ways of our own organization and some of the remarkable individuals who have led us to where we are today as the premier doll collectors organization in the world. I hope you all have a capital time in the capitol city and that you will take home many happy memories of this “Capital Affair”! It has been my honor and pleasure to serve as your Director of Convention Services.

Convention Policies and Etiquette You may not lend your badge to any other person for any reason. Allowing another person to use your badge or ribbons will result in the loss of your Convention privileges for the remainder of the convention. Souvenirs for which payment has been made may be claimed following the Convention. You may not give or sell your theme events or banquet ticket to another person. These tickets are marked with your name and registration number enabling us to track and protect your favors and souvenir. Do not post event tickets for trade or sale anywhere at the Convention. No exchanges — no exceptions. Tickets with written alterations will not be honored. Your banquet host/ess will have a list of those assigned to his/her table — no others will be seated. If you are unable to attend a meal function, your ticket must be turned in to the UFDC office by noon of the day preceding the event. Unless you turn in your ticket prior to the function, your favor or souvenir cannot be released to a third party or shipped by mail. Audio or video recording of any meeting, program, seminar, or workshop is not permitted at any UFDC Convention. You may video record the competitive exhibits and the special exhibits only during the times designated on the schedule, unless there is a sign specifically prohibiting photography. Images of people or items exhibited at any UFDC function, if used commercially, must include the following caption: ‘Photo-graphed at the United Federation of Doll Clubs, Inc. Annual Convention.’ All use of any images must be in compliance with the stipulations of the ‘Exhibitor and Photographer Agreement.’ By registering for the Annual Convention, attendees agree that their image, or images of items they exhibit at the Convention, may be used by UFDC without any additional recognition, fees or compensation.

~ 25 ~

No large tote bags, shopping bags or camera bags may be brought into the Sales Room, Competitive or Special Exhibits. Please leave all valuables in a safe location prior to entering these rooms. Do not leave them at the door of any of these rooms. Neither UFDC nor its guard service will be responsible for your bags. You may not sell from your room during Convention. Sales, by authorized dealers, are permitted only in the Salesroom, at the Publisher’s Preview and in locations staffed by UFDC officials. As a courtesy to our physically challenged UFDC members, please allow wheelchairs and motorized carts through the crowd to be first to enter all programs and meal events. At the close of these functions, members using these vehicles are asked to wait until the crowd disperses before attempting to leave the room.

Convention Assistance There are two different offices listed on your schedule. These offices are designed to meet different needs.

Mini-Office Coat Room – Terrace Level If you have any questions, go to the Mini-Office on the Terrace Level (Coat Room). Maureen Steurer and her staff will redeem charm vouchers, give directions and sell available seminar, workshop and event tickets. The Employment Agency is also located within the Mini-Office. Sign up here if you wish to volunteer three hours and receive a ‘thank you’ Convention charm.

UFDC Office Convention Office 2/3 – Concourse Level

~ 26 ~

The UFDC Office is primarily for the use of administrative staff and Convention Chairmen. In order to provide an efficient working environment in this office, please limit visits by first checking with the Mini-Office to see if they can assist you. The Convention Coordinator works out of this office to coordinate all aspects necessary for 11 meal functions, 19 business meetings, 41 workshops, 20 seminars, seven special exhibits, combined competitive exhibits, helper rooms, and a large dealer salesroom. Our central office staff, from Kansas City, work long hours with Ray Baker and members of the outstanding Convention Crew performing the many tasks necessary to make the Convention run smoothly.

Safety and Security In every large convention city visitors need to take a few precautions to have a safe and happy visit. Please take care. •

Do not leave your belongings unattended or out of sight, even for a short time.

Do not carry excessive amounts of cash and credit cards. Take only what you need. Consider leaving your valuables in the safe in your room.

When in your hotel room, always double lock the door and use the safety latch. Never open your door until you have visually identified the caller, using the door viewer, and you know the caller or you are expecting the caller.

Use hotel escalators as much as possible. Make an effort to travel with a friend when using the elevators.

Prior to leaving the hotel, consult the concierge for directions to dining facilities, jogging routes, sightseeing spots, etc.

~ 27 ~

Remove your name badge and ribbons prior to leaving the hotel. Your Convention tags identify you as a traveler; therefore, you are associated with cash, credit cards and jewelry.

Always carry your purse in front of you with your hand over the opening. Be especially careful of your purse when you are carrying a lot of packages.

Pickpockets, who usually work in pairs, will feign an illness or pretend to have their foot caught in an elevator door. This distraction gives their partner an opportunity to remove your valuables.

No large tote bags, shopping bags or camera bags may be brought into the Salesroom, Competitive or Special Exhibits. Please leave all valuables in a safe location prior to entering these rooms. Do not leave them at the door of any of these rooms. Neither UFDC nor its guard service will be responsible for your bags.

Convention Chairmen It would be impossible to produce a convention of this size without the commitment of many dedicated volunteers. Convention Chairmen make a major commitment in accepting these positions. Their supporting volunteers also work many hours during convention. not include administrative costs, advertising, trucking, drayage and decorator services, signs, employee salaries, printing and office supplies, postage and shipping, hotel expenses, insurance, security or volunteer expenses, which would add considerably to the value of attending the UFDC Annual Convention. Sale of helper tickets, donations and dealer booth rental fees pay for the balance of the costs to produce a Convention. Thank you to the clubs, individuals and commercial firms who donated funds and helpers as well as items for the special events. Special recognition goes to the UFDC dealers who continue to make generous donations of their time and money. They serve the organization and Convention in various ways — on the UFDC Board of Directors, presenting programs, hosting luncheons, donating helpers, providing maps, organizing special exhibits, teaching seminars, instructing workshops, and judging in the competitive exhibits.

We apologize for any inconvenience… Because the events in this guide were scheduled months in advance, it is possible some details may change. UFDC reserves the right to change or correct an item to accommodate demand, facility use or error. Listen for announcements during the opening ceremonies for time and location changes.

UFDC Products Be sure to check the UFDC Sales Booth for these exciting items: - To cool you during the hot summer Washington days, a souvenir fan, with the printed image of the formal White House portrait of Helen Taft, will be available for purchase.
