Are You an Olmsted Linear Park Fan?

A Fabulous French Affair By Jennifer and Weslee Knapp

This year’s Party for the Parks on Ponce, Preserving Olmsted’s Masterpiece was an unbelievable event that generated much excitement about our beautiful parks! Held at the perfect location, the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, the Party for the Parks on Ponce Gala once again proved to be the “not-to-miss” event of our community. Our neighbors gathered together in unsurpassed numbers to raise funds for Frederick Law Olmsted’s beautiful masterpiece, which we all enjoy. Farmhouse Design Studio and Barry Golivesky worked together on marketing of the event to create a French themed experience. Affairs to Remember Caterers provided a perfect French inspired meal and Philip Thompson (of The Lily and the Lion) created amazing decorations, reminiscent of a dreamy French chateau. The silent and live auction items included amazing trips, French wines, remarkable art and many gift cards from local business who value our cause in preserving the park. Guests were treated to two spectacular solos from Atlanta’s own opera star, Timothy Miller, and were delighted by the antics of a French mime. Another highlight was Plein Air painter, John Guernsey, who painted the beloved Fernbank dinosaurs during the event and generously gave the proceeds of his auctioned painting to the park.

Olmsted Plein Air a Success By Andy Hall

Jason Sacran, the winner of the 2015 Olmsted Plein Air Invitational may have said it best in the September issue of Plein Air Magazine, “It was a great event with lots of community support and enthusiasm. The organizers and patrons were all so excited and welcoming. It was one of the best, if not the best, ‘first’ plein air events I’ve been to.” Continued page 5.

The Druid Hills Garden Club Plants Dogwoods and Daffodils By Mary Ann Hite

The Druid Hills Garden Club, Atlanta’s second oldest garden club was organized in March, 1928. Its first civic project was to create a municipal rose garden in the public park on Ponce de Leon Avenue at Lullwater Road. Our club was the first in the nation to sponsor such a municipal garden. Later, funds were raised for a fountain, which was dedicated and presented to the city in January 1935. In 1937, the roses were removed and replaced with more forgiving azaleas, flowering trees and bulbs. The plantings were more suitable for a heavily traveled thoroughfare as Paideia School students were frequent visitors. Over the years, the Druid Hills Rose Garden evolved. The fountain is now gone and the name of the Rose Garden was officially changed to the Druid Hills Memory Garden. In 1981, the club began planting trees in memory of deceased members.

Carolyn Malone Carpenter Family In preparation for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, garden club members committed to a new project called Pathways of Gold. The club celebrated Arbor Week by planting trees along the Ponce de Leon Pathways of Gold. The Druid Hills Garden Club served also as a catalyst in the formation of the Olmsted Linear Park Master Restoration/ Rehabilitation Plan. Since 1928, garden club members have made contributions of time and money to support the park. The club was instrumental in coordinating memorial plantings and workdays in this section of the Olmsted Linear Park. To date, the garden club remains involved in the beautification and care of the park by planting hundreds of daffodils each year. Most recently, members gathered to plant two dogwood trees in memory of Carolyn Malone Carpenter, a member since 1949, and Shirley Smith, member since 1993. The Olmsted Linear Park Alliance is deeply grateful to the Druid Hills Garden Club for their dedication and commitment to keeping Olmsted Linear Park beautiful.

OLPA Introduces the Next Generation of Leaders

page 2

By George Ickes, Park Director

OLPA is excited to announce The Young Leadership Council (‘YLC”). The YLC is a group of energetic, likeminded individuals who are passionate about preserving the Olmsted Linear Park. The YLC was formed earlier this spring to inspire the next generation of leaders within OLPA and they have hit the ground running. They have scheduled volunteer work days and there will be networking opportunities throughout the rest of the year. For more information visit and like our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/OlmstedYLC.

Nathan Shannon, Ian Karra, Allie Brown and Katie Bleau

Briley Brisendine

Briley Brisendine currently serves as Executive Vice President & General Counsel at SiteOne Landscape Supply. He was formerly with Home Depot and prior to that, he was with McKenna Long and Aldridge LLP in Atlanta. He graduated from the Walter F. George Law School of Mercer University (1996) and Wofford College (1992). He serves as Vice-Chair of the Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta, a volunteer organization providing services to non-profit organizations in the city. Briley is married to Elena Parent, who was recently elected to the Georgia State Senate. They have two children and live on Springdale Road. They are sustaining contributors of OLPA and can be found around the silent auction tables at the annual Gala. “Elena and I both strongly believe in the importance of community involvement and public service,” says Briley. “The parks were a significant factor that drew us to the neighborhood two years ago, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play a small part in helping to maintain and support them.”

Robin Chalmers

Robin is a transplant from Arizona via Northern California. In 1986, she moved to the Candler Park neighborhood after a misfit year of living in Buckhead. Since then, she and her husband Michael Purser have lived within ½ mile of the Olmsted Linear Park. As a native of the Sonoran Desert in Southern Arizona, one of her favorite times of year in Deepdene Park is the dead of winter. Like the desert, winter in Deepdene

Paws in the Park

reveals the naked landscape, the depth of the ravine and the variety of trees without their leaves, says Robin. She and her dog Libby walk the Olmsted Linear Park a few days per week, season after season. Robin enjoys seeing people making use of the park: kids riding scooters in the oval, students lounging over their lunch and young and old cyclists, walkers and runners cruising down the pathways. A graduate of UC Berkeley School of Optometry, Dr. Chalmers is an independent clinical trial consultant working in epidemiology and post-market surveillance of contact lens complications.

Justin A. Kritz A native of Atlanta, Justin grew up and still resides in the Druid Hills neighborhood. He attended Out of Doors School and Pace Academy. He is a graduate of Brown University and Emory University School of Law. After serving as staff attorney to a Fulton County Superior Court Judge, Justin now has his own general civil practice in an office near his home.

OLPA Board

Justin is Past President of the Druid Hills Civic Association, on the Board of Trustees of Paideia and a member of Leadership DeKalb Class of 2015. As the Olmsted Linear Park is essentially the front yard of the neighborhood he loves so much, Justin’s interest in its preservation is a natural. Accordingly, he happily accepted the nomination to OLPA’s Board of Directors and looks forward to continuing the excellent work that OLPA performs.

Once we’ve braved the River Ponce at the crosswalk, within steps we dive into forested trails that I feel like North Georgia. On weekends in Deepdene lots of folks are walking and running their dogs.

Each morning between 8:00 and 10:00 (depends on the clinical research workload of Robin, my chief walker) I get to don my leash and head out for a 2-mile walk around the neighborhood. Sometimes I’m really lucky and she decides to head in the direction of Deepdene Park, the wildest of the Olmstead Linear Parks, right at the bottom of my street.

One of my favorite Deepdene spots is the Oval at the East end of the park. I love to see families with little kids. On the level Oval, those kids go round and round in full view of their parents and often want to stop, pet me, get right in my face…. Well, you get the picture. It is a great resource for kids, parents, and their dogs. I hope to see you there.

Plein Air continued. The road to the Olmsted Plein Air Invitational began in fall 2013 when we, co-chairs Andy Hall and Lillian Ansley, put into motion Andy Hall, Lillian Ansley our vision of and Hiu Lai Chong an outdoor painting event in the Olmsted Linear Park. In February, 2014, the plein air event was introduced to the OLPA board of directors. The objectives for this event were: 1. Raise public awareness of the significance of Atlanta’s Olmsted Linear Park; 2. Raise vital funds to maintain and perpetuate the mission of the Olmsted Linear Park Alliance (OLPA); and 3. Evoke pride, enthusiasm and ignite support for the Olmsted Linear Park among metro Atlanta community leaders and its residents. The OLPA board voted to embrace our dream of a major Atlanta plein air event and thought the park was the perfect place to hold it. OLPA staff and board stepped up to assist us and provide every human resource imaginable. Come spring of 2015, the Olmsted Plein Air Invitational team welcomed 30 of the top plein air artists in the United States. Residents of Druid Hills graciously opened their homes to the artists as housing hosts. There were fabulous evening events where the artists had an opportunity to meet new friends, collectors and supporters of the event. The opening welcome dinner

was hosted by the Cherokee Town and Country Club and provided a tour of their very own plein air collection, one of the largest in the country. The next evening, Martha and Toby Brooks wrapped guests in southern hospitality with a bluegrass BBQ, and subsequently Ann and Frank Critz rolled out the southern charm in their elegant backyard with a lovely alfresco dinner. During the week, artists roamed the park, painting landscapes, houses, churches, gardens, forests and even the Plaza Shopping Center just west of the park. Three days of intense painting from the artists and four days of ticketed evening events culminated in the eagerly anticipated and sold-out grand finale, the Collectors Soirée held at the Druid Hills Golf Club.

Woody Cyrus receives Cezanne Best in Landscape Award More than 200 guests joined the artists that evening to have first look at what would become history in the making. Never before has the Olmsted Linear Park been captured on canvas of this magnitude. The ballroom was breathtaking and the event was unlike anything anyone had experienced.

Honoring Honor By Jennifer J. Richardson

a

John Carlyle Hemby, Jr. (1928-2014)

By Tally Sweat and Jennifer J. Richardson

Honor Cumming Cobbs was a vibrant and creative member of our community. Honor became an active member of the Druid Hills Civic Association and The DeKalb Council of the Arts and served as president of the Emory Women’s Club. Honor was especially interested in historic preservation, and helped to save Callanwolde from demolition. Honor was active in the Olmsted Parks Society of Atlanta, and later the Olmsted Linear Park Alliance, helping to spread the word that Mr. Olmsted designed the linear park threatened by a Department of Transportation expressway. She played an important role in protesting the road: picketing, marching, and even chaining herself to a tree.

page 6

Honor loved music and art, and was a lifelong supporter of the Atlanta Symphony and of the Friends of Music at Emory. A master gardener, Honor loved the outdoors and amazed her family and younger friends by hiking, flying along zip lines and roaring around on jet skis. Honor Cobbs was a model citizen and a major contributor to the quality of life in Druid Hills.

Another mighty oak has fallen. It is with sadness that we acknowledge the death of one of OLPA’s two Emeritus Board members: John Hemby died on December 3, 2014. John’s life centered around his work for the Georgia Power Company, his service to many charities, his extended family and his church. John and June Hemby were married for 64 years and had three children, 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. As a faithful and major contributor of OLPA, many days passersby could see John and June out picking up trash in Shadyside Park, across from their residence in Lullwater Estate. John was like a ray of sunshine when he entered a room. He showered affection on those around him, gave advice and encouragement and lead the charge for optimism. A person such as John Hemby simply cannot be replaced in any business or board. “A special man was John Hemby,” said OLPA founder, Tally Sweat. “He will be missed by all who knew him.” Though sad that John will no longer be with us, his legacy remains and we celebrate his presence among us for the years we had him.

Friends of the Olmsted Linear Park Alliance

Thank you for your generous support! Your gifts allow us to continue the work of nurturing and protecting this beautiful, historic landmark today and for future generations.
