ELECTRICAL MACHINES I /6

ISTANBUL UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING

6

This course aims the students to get insight into the conditions of optimal operation of electrical machines in power networks and industry. Starting with the introduction to the structure of power transformers, it proceeds to the proper choice of the frequency converters in speed and torque control of asynchronous motors. Since efficiency is the key in operation of electrical machines, the first four lectures introduce how hysteresis losses and eddycurrent losses in iron core change with voltage, frequency, and load for a given machine whether a transformer or asynchrous motor. The current carrying coil is the source of magnetic field around a flow path set by the core; both comprises the magnetic circuit that guides to design the machine in size, power, and performance. In the second four-week period, the two-side voltage equations in a single-phase transformer evolves into an electrical equivalent circuit to calculate voltage drop at varying load, to study the parallel operation, and to estimate the faulty conditions. Analysis of the asynchronous machine goes from the ninth lecture to the twelveth. Robust structure and maintenance-free feature makes it industry-friendly. Rotating magnetic field with less harmonic content allows steady torque production, whose formulation derives from the energy conservation point of view.

Despite the airgap, its similar structure to the transformer leads to almost the same electrical equivalent, which is convenient to analyze its performance and efficiency at varying voltage, frequency and load conditions. The last two lectures are devoted to the basisc of asynchronous motor controllers. Speed-dependent-torque loads are the most convenient ones for frequency converters. Electrical equivalent of the asynchronous motor helps with understanding the effect of voltage/frequency type converters on motor performance. This course aims the students to get insight into the conditions of optimal operation of electrical machines in power networks and industry. As being the continuation of Electrical Machines – I, in the first two weeks, it covers a review of structure and operation of asynchronous machines. With its proper controller, asynchronous machine can take over many kinds of loads from transportation to industry, and that is why we deepen our understanding on three phase inverters during the next four weeks. The analysis of curent-source and voltagesource inverters accompanies the description of the control techniques. We start with the basic square-wave input and proceed to the pulse-width-modulation technique. Syncronous machine, especially in its generator mode, is the other lead actor in power networks: It produces the electrical energy that the asynchronous machine consumes. Its structure is so similar to that of asynchronous machine that we jump to the study of its operation taking a look at the interaction between two magnet systems it involves. Active-reactive power control by voltage regulators and speed governors, types of excitation systems, connecting generator to the network and paralleling two generators, machine circle diagram and V-

shape characteristics are the issues we take from the seventh week to the tenth. Into the twelfth week, we turn to the synchronous motor, and its symmetry to the generator allows an easy-to-get insight into its operation as condensator and constantspeed torque machine. Instead of being a simple button-push action, starting a synchronous motor is a process. As for the speed control of synchronous motor, it is similar to that of asyncronous motor. The thirteenth and fourteenth weeks are a quick review of other kinds of machines: Single-phase A.C. machines, brushed and brushless D.C. machines, and reluctance machines used especially for traction drive. POWER SYSTEMS II/5

ISTANBUL UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING

This course aims the students to get insight into the conditions of optimal operation of high voltage power network, and centers on the studies required for its economic, safe and reliable daily operation: Load flow analysis, short-circuit analysis, and stability analysis. The first two weeks reviews the power system structures and components from the previous course, comprising of radial networks, loop networks, medium-voltage and high-voltage line models, along with the operational matters like active and reactive power losses in transmission network. The use of p.u. system is recalled. In the next four weeks, we start with the dc flow analysis of a sample network, then we develop constant-power and constantimpedance load models, construct bus admitance matrix representing the ac network, and introduce the Newton-Raphson Method to compute the bus voltages and line currents for a given network under given load conditions. Short-circuit analysis is the preliminary study of sizing the circuit breakers to protect the lines from the fault currents. Inverse bus admitance contains thevenin impedance of each node in the network and allows computing fault currents resulting from three phase short circuits and flowing on each line. Fortescue transformation is introduced to analyze the unsymmetrical faults. This

method helps with reprensenting the unysmmetrical networks in terms of symmetrical ones; thus it simplifes computing the fault currents. This analysis goes on between the weeks seventh and tenth. From the eleventh week to the fourteenth, stability analysis investigates the rotor electromechanical oscillations after three phase short circuit fault. To simplify the analysis, synchronous generator is modelled as against infinite bus. Because the electromechanical equations are nonlinear, numerical method are used to calculate the generator swing angle during and after the fault to determine if it will escape out of synchronism with other generators. The critical fault clearing time that the circuitbreaker should trip comes out of this analysis. NAME AND CONTACT INFORMATION OF PROFESSOR (EMAIL / PHONE)

This course aims the students to get insight into the conditions of stable operation of power network components: synchronous generator, asynchronous motor, and each bus. By stability, we mean the operation variables like line voltages, line curents, and rotor angles remaining within acceptable boundaries. Modelling the generator against an infinite bus during the first two weeks, we calculate its natural frequency of oscillation after a disturbance in the network like a weak short circuit fault or minor load-in, or minor load-out. This analysis helps us with estimating the tendency of a generator to stay in synchronism with the rest of the network. After major disturbances, where protection circuits may take action, we solve a set of non-linear electromechanical equations by numerical methods to find out if the generator can return to synchronism after swinging around the new rotor angle. Formulation of these equations along with the introduction of the numerical methods used to solve them lasts four weeks. As a quick assesment of stability, equal-area criterion is discussed. The formulation above is extended to multi machine power networks between the seventh and tenth weeks. Higher generator

models including the transients in rotor circuit and in damper coils are introduced and integrated into the electromechanical equations. The effect of voltage regulator on stability is explored. The last four weeks cover the stability issues of an asynchronous machine and asynchronous machine group against sudden changes in load or oscillations in line voltage.
