Wicklow 200 cycling tour in aid of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin Mark Fahy of Rathkeale completed the Wicklow 200 cycling tour on Sunday 9th of June in Aid of Our Lady's Children’s Hospital Crumlin. This is regarded as Ireland’s toughest one day tour which has plenty of hills with well over 8,000ft of climbing. Mark would like to thank everybody in Rathkeale who sponsored him and he managed to raise €2,365 for Crumlin. Well done Mark.

RATHKEALE COMMUNITY COUNCIL CHILDREN’S CORNER RCCCC Life Cycle of Butterflies and Moths

As advanced insects, butterflies and moths have a "complete" life cycle. This means that there are four separate stages, each of which looks completely different and serves a different purpose in the life of the insect. The egg is a tiny, round, oval, or cylindrical object, usually with fine ribs and other microscopic structures. The female attaches the egg to leaves, stems, or other objects, usually on or near the intended caterpillar food.

Last Week’s Puzzle: What word can be written forward, backward and upside down while still remaining the same word? Answer: NOON. This Week’s Puzzle: When can ten plus ten equal ten, yet ten minus ten equal twenty?

The caterpillar (or larva) is the long, worm-like stage of the butterfly or moth. It often has an interesting pattern of stripes or patches, and it may have spine-like hairs. It is the feeding and growth stage. As it grows, it sheds its skin four or more times so as to enclose its rapidly growing body. The chrysalis (or pupa) is the transformation stage within which the caterpillar tissues are broken down and the adult insect's structures are formed. The chrysalis of most species is brown or green and blends into the background. Many species overwinter in this stage.

The adult (or imago) is colourful butterfly or moth usually seen. It is the reproductive and mobile stage for the species. The adults undergo courtship, mating, and egg-laying. The adult butterfly or moth is also the stage that migrates or colonizes new habitats. The butterfly pictured here is a Monarch, which is fairly large in size. The Monarch's wingspan is 3 3/8 - 4 7/8 inches (8.6 12.4 cm).

CHARITY WHITE COLLAR BOXING

Reported by Gavin Healy This Saturday night promises to pack out the Courtenay Lodge Hotel as our team of Charity boxers finally get to step into the ring for the chance to fight for their chosen charity. They have been put through hell and back over the last 6 weeks as our coaches got them into the best shape they have ever been in. They trained 3 nights a week and put their bodies to the limits each night so they could box for 3 rounds in what is one of the toughest sports in the world. Anyone who has stood in the squared circle will vouch the same. Unfortunately, on the night there will be a winner and a loser, but in our eyes they are all winners. Having the guts to stand in the ring and compete for their chosen charities is the most important thing. We would like to wish each and every one of the boxers the very best of luck and hope they will enjoy what promises to be a brilliant night. There are some fantastic raffle prizes to be won also on the night and we would like to thank everyone who gave them to us. Some tickets can still be got by contacting Gavin on 087 6890048 or Peter on 087 6550369 or any committee member. Limerick Set to Welcome over 5,000 Competitors for National Sports Festival

First Online Radio Station

Limerick is preparing for the arrival of thousands of hurling, camogie and handball players as it hosts the national sports festival, Féile na nGael. Féile na nGael is a national festival for boys and girls under 14 years of age and runs from 5th-7th July 2013. To celebrate Limerick hosting the 2013 event, the city will hold a major parade on Friday 5th July, kick starting the festival. As hurling fever spreads through the Treaty City ahead of Limerick’s battle with Cork on Sunday 14th July in the Munster Senior Hurling Final, Limerick’s streets will be filled with up to 5,000 marchers from all 32 counties and five marching bands, led by the Artane Band. Newly appointed Mayor of Limerick, Cllr. Kathleen Leddin, said Limerick is a proud sporting city with a long standing love affair with the GAA. “Limerick is one of Ireland’s strongest sporting cities and we have proved that with our outstanding performance in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship to date! I am most looking forward to welcoming the visiting teams to our city for what is shaping up to be an exciting, fun filled weekend,” said Mayor Leddin. Each year 25,000 boys and girls take part in the festival across all 32 counties and Limerick will welcome up to 150 hurling and Camogie clubs along with 60 hand ball clubs, with a total of up to 5,000 participating in the weekend of events. The highlight of the weekend, the parade of competing teams, begins at the Gaelic Grounds at 7.30pm on Friday 5th July and will proceed along the Ennis Road, up to O’Connell Street where there will be a review stand. Members of the public are encouraged to attend and support their local teams. Once the parade reaches the junction of Mallow Street and O’Connell Street, the marchers will disperse to Pery Square, Hartstonge Street, Upper Mallow Street, Barrington Street and Catherine Place. Visiting hurling and camogie clubs have been paired with host clubs here in Limerick and will be staying with host families. All other visitors, including handball players, will be staying in hotels/guesthouses around the city and county. Féile na nGael is a national movement with the primary objective of facilitating and enabling the personal, social and cultural development of young people. It also emphasises cultural and community activities, leadership and training through sport. There will be road closures from the Gaelic Grounds along the Ennis Road, Sarsfield Bridge, Sarsfield Street and O'Connell Street as far as the Mallow Street junction for the parade on Friday, 5th July. The Limerick Communications Office wishes both visiting and local participants an enjoyable weekend as they take in all that Limerick has to offer. ST MARY’S ATHLETIC CLUB Golden Performances in Donegal: Last Saturday, Oisin Enright, Nathan Cremin, Ciaran O’Sullivan + Shane Fitzgerald made the long trip to Donegal to compete in the All Ireland Juvenile Athletics Championships at Finn Valley AC Donegal, and what a performance these four boys displayed. First up on Saturday morning was the Boys U11 Long Jump. The team consisted of Shane Fitzgerald and Ciaran O’Sullivan. They had to take 3 jumps each and their best jump was measured and combined. Shane’s best jump was 3.95m and Ciaran’s best jump was 4.05 which gave a combined score of 8m. This was enough to crown them All Ireland Champions U11 Boys Long Jump 2013. It was a fantastic start to the Championships for St Mary’s AC. Next, representing the club were Oisin Enright and Nathan Cremin in the Boys U11 600m and again it was an accumulation of both times which would give the final results. These two boys continued the winning streak with Oisin running 1min49 secs and Nathan 1min52secs to secure the title of All Ireland Champions U11 600m 2013. In the final event of the day the four boys combined to make up a 4x100m relay team and again put in fantastic performances. Shane ran the anchor leg and finished neck and neck with the athlete from Middleton AC. There was a tense wait for the boys and their families whilst the judges examined the photo finish. After what seemed like an eternity, the announcement came that the boys had again struck Gold. I’m sure the long journey home was shortened by the realisation that they were all coming home as All Ireland Champions. What a fantastic result for a small club in the west of Ireland! Well done boys. The club and your families are so proud of your achievements at such a young age and hopefully, you will all stay together for many years to come. A huge thanks must also go to the boys’ parents for carrying them on the long trip to Donegal. Without their support, the boys would not have been able to achieve this great success. Next Event: U12-U19 Juvenile All Ireland Championships Tullamore 6th + 7th July The Club has 4 girls competing next week -Sophie Liston U 12 Turbo Javelin, Niamh Foley U12 60m, 600m + Long Jump, Holly Meredith U12 High Jump, Shot Put, Turbo Javelin, + Sophie Meredith 60m Hurdles + 80 m.
