COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to provide an introduction to the basic knowledge and skills needed for you to pursue a career in the rapidly growing Allied Health field. The information covered is the entrylevel information required of everyone working in a health care setting. College credit through Capital Community Technical College will be awarded to all students completing the course with a 75 average. The nature of this course requires a great deal of oral and written communication that will be achieved by participation in small and large group discussions, lab experiences, written assignments, individual journals, and a field experience at an area medical facility. All students taking this course MUST participate in the field experience during the second semester. You will be exposed to many different careers within the medical field; some with which you will be very familiar and others that you may not. The classroom portion of the class will be taught by Mrs. Brand (Family and Consumer Science teacher), the laboratory portion of the class will be taught by a certified American Red Cross Instructor and the field experience portion during second semester will be supervised by Mrs. Brand and an associate. CLASSROOM/LAB EXPECTATIONS:

1. RESPECT!!!!! For yourself and others. If you have any concerns, please communicate with me. All concerns will be kept confidential. a. Do not make fun of anyone else! b. No foul language! No inappropriate gestures/comments. c. Be courteous & helpful. d. Act/dress professionally is certain settings 2. Come prepared everyday to class, this includes bringing a writing utensil and your folder/notebook. 3. Be inside the classroom when the bell rings. Be ready to start class. 4. Come see me after an absence to make-up any work you may have missed. This shows responsibility and accountability. 5. Ask for help when you need it! 6. All rules in the student handbook apply in this class (cheating, skipping class, cell phone usage, etc…) ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Please make sure you are familiar with the Academic Honor Code policy that is stated in your student planner. MAKE-UP WORK: Students are responsible for contacting the teacher to find out what work they missed when they were absent. YOU are also responsible for arranging to make-up assignments when absences are excused. Students who are not present on lab days will be required to make up the lab time when it is convenient for the lab instructor. Any work missed due to absence for athletics, drama, music, field trips, etc. is due the day you return. This includes turning in projects, homework and taking tests and quizzes. All make-up work should be completed within 2 weeks. No credit will be given for class participation or assignments missed due to unexcused absences or cuts. LATE WORK: Late work should not be confused with make-up work. It relates to assignments that for whatever reasons YOU have chosen not complete on time. Most assignments will carry a grade reduction starting with the due date. You will be informed of these when the assignment is explained.

ATTENDANCE: All students should be familiar with the attendance policy as stated in your planners. Some highlights you should be aware of: 1. Students are expected to be in the classroom when the bell rings. Lateness to class without a pass will result in an unexcused tardy. 2. Three (3) unexcused tardies to class will result in an unexcused absence and an office detention. 3. Students who come to class less than 15 minutes into the class period with a pass from a teacher or staff member will be assigned an excused tardy. 4. Students who miss more than 15 minutes of a class without a pass from a teacher or staff member will be assigned an unexcused absence and referred to the Attendance Coordinator. 5. Phone calls will be made to parents at the second unexcused absence. 6. Students who have four (4) unexcused absences or twelve(12) excused absences for the semester will receive a grade but no credit and will need to go through the appeals process. ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT: All electronic devices including but not limited to cell phones, beepers, pagers, CD players, MP3 players, etc. are to be turned off and placed out of sight for the duration of the class period. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action. AVAILABILITY FOR QUESTIONS OR EXTRA HELP: Mrs. Brand is available before or after school or during a mutually "free" period to answer any questions or address any problems. My office at Hall is in E105 (Foods Room). I am generally available after school most days until 3:30. Let me know during the day if you are planning to stay after.
