Allied Health Professions

School of

Long a leader in health professions education, Saint Louis University began its first baccalaureate degree program in an allied health profession in 1929. In 1979, the University’s allied health programs were organized into a separate academic unit, the School of Allied Health Professions. The School now offers eighteen undergraduate, graduate, professional, and certificate programs in seven allied health disciplines. The typical program of study for the undergraduate student includes course work at both the Health Sciences Center and Frost campuses of the University, as well as clinical practicums at several of the School’s numerous affiliated clinical institutions and professional practice settings. The primary mission of the School is to prepare allied health practitioners who possess the competence, compassion, and conduct requisite to a health professional. The School’s position in a University-based academic health center also provides students the opportunity to acquire the experience and skills needed to assume leadership roles in practice, teaching, administration, and research. Graduates are prepared to sit for their respective state and national licensing, certifying, or registry board examinations, and are encouraged to continue their education throughout their professional career.

Special Admission Requirements and Procedures Admissions requirements and procedures for the allied health programs vary, and prospective students should contact the individual allied health department for guidance. Many state and national licensing and governing organizations will not grant a license, certification, registration, or other similar document to practice the respective profession if one is convicted of a felony, and in some cases a misdemeanor. Prospective applicants are encouraged to consult with the chosen professional governing or licensing organization for more detailed information before applying. All application materials for freshmen applicants to the five and one-half year Master of Physical Therapy program must be complete and received by the Office of Undergraduate Admission. Students desiring a major in physical therapy should apply to that program as entering freshmen, since spaces for transfer into physical therapy are limited. Acceptance to the Occupational Science Program at both the freshman level and the sophomore and junior transfer level

is on a rolling admission basis. Enrollment capacity is limited; therefore, early application is strongly encouraged. Freshman seeking acceptance into the Pre-Physician Assistant Scholars Track should contact the department directly for information on admission requirements and degree options. Applicants seeking admission to the post-baccalaureate (M.M.S.) Physician Assistant Program should consult the department directly for information on application procedures and deadlines. Transfer applicants for the Nuclear Medicine Technology program should consult that department directly for application materials and information on procedures and deadlines. Applications to the Certificate Program in Clinical Laboratory Science should be received by the Office of Undergraduate Admission by May 1 to be considered for the August class. Applications received after this date will be reviewed only if spaces remain available. The School of Allied Health Professions requires natural science courses in biology and chemistry. For admission to the Physical Therapy program, a course in physics plus one additional year of natural science and four years of mathematics are required. For Occupational Science, a third year of natural science courses and 4 years of English courses are required. There are also minimum GPA requirements for every program of study in order to be considered for admission. Please see the table below for specific information. Some part-time or full-time students may want to consider a career in the allied health professions but may wish to delay making a commitment to a specific program until they explore various options. The School permits students to enroll as “Allied Health Undeclared” to gain perspective on health careers. Admission to this “undeclared major” does not guarantee admission to specific programs.

Investigative and Medical Sciences (B.S.) The Investigative and Medical Sciences program is designed to meet the needs of students considering a wide variety of career paths, including but not limited to careers related to medicine, research, and forensics. Many of these paths require coursework beyond the undergraduate level. Therefore, the curriculum offers a strong foundation in both basic and medical sciences to prepare the student for both entry-level employment and advanced studies in the sciences. In addtion, the curriculum provides flexibility with a minimum of 21 credit hours in an area of concentration chosen by the student to match his/her professional goals. These hours may be applied to a minor, certificate program, or course sequence that complements the student’s talents or interests.
