New Discussions

18

Campus e-mail

19

Campus e-mail • Aging campus Exchange system needs to be addressed • •

Exchange 2007 Small quotas

• 20+ email servers on campus • •

Some depts insist on having TLD Some departments living in gmail.com

• Directory sparsely populated •

Difficult to find people’s e-mail

• Students off on GApps • • •

BYOE model 20% uptake (we think) Not really using full GApps suite

20

Campus e-mail Options

Upgrade • $400K for 1 GB • $2M for 25 GB

Cloud Email • Google Apps • Office365

21

BYOEm • Allow personal email in directory • Supply email where blank

Pros & Cons • Local upgrade • Money rat hole • Spam & Phishing issues • Not core competency

• BYOE

• Office365

• E-mail only, essentially breaks calendaring, presence, collaboration. • Makes retention & discovery nearly impossible.’

• GApps • • • •

Emotional favorite (perhaps?) Good Webmail Weak enterprise approach Outlook integration 22

• Big/Bad Microsoft • Not what students use • Least disruptive upgrade path (after local upgrade) • Better enterprise approach • Best Outlook integration • Rumors of iOS issues • Other MUS schools moving to O365

Salient Points • It’s bigger than just e-mail. • If we upgrade what we had, would this even be a discussion? • Our directories (and IAM) need major overhaul. • Essentially 2 horse race in the Cloud. • Do we have the campus energy to do a big engaged protracted analysis (again)? • OKAY – FLOOR IS OPEN FOR GROUP DISCUSSION 23

What DOES IT look like in the eyes of YOU, the MSU users? What SHOULD it look like?
