IH Student Council Needs Assistance As you know, Indian Hills Elementary school will officially close its doors to educating students at the end of this school year. As we make plans for the remainder of the year, the Indian Hills Student Council, along with their advisor, Ms. Kristen Vargo, ask for your assistance in collecting pictures of activities and events held at Indian Hills Elementary School since its opening in 1970. Please include a caption to describe the event in the picture. They are also looking to capture the memories of Indian Hills over the years from staff, students, and community. The group plans on creating a presentation for an open house scheduled for spring 2014. If you are able to assist with this effort, please send your written memories and scan and email your pictures to Ms. Vargo

By Jessica Mahr, Art Teacher The art classes are getting ready for the Learning Fair on April 10h from 7-8pm. The classes have just finished making artwork from the continent of Africa and are moving on to art from North America. The Kindergarten classes are making 3-D American flags using construction paper, papier mache’, glue, and apple crates to create the effect of flags “blowing” in the wind. The first graders are studying the art of American artist, Edward Hicks, especially is painting Peaceable Kingdom. The painting shows a variety of wild animals and people all living together in peace. The students are creating their own peaceful collages placing animals on a lush landscape. The second graders are learning about the Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo. Kahlo painted many very personal self-portraits that included things that illustrated her life. The students created selfportraits and added three items that were personal to them. The third graders are creating landscapes inspired by the American artist, Thomas Moran. The fourth graders are studying the art of Mardi Gras and making decorative or animalistic masks from clay and a variety of materials. The fifth graders are making connections between social studies and art by completing a scene depicting a Mesoamerican group, such as, the Aztecs, Incans, Mayans, or Mississippians. The sixth graders are creating 3-D totem poles with newspaper, tape, plaster and paint.

Math Coach’s Corner: It’s that time of year again, and preparations for testing have begun in many classrooms. This is the last year for students in Grades 3-8 to take the Ohio Achievement Assessments (unless current legislation changes). Beginning in the 2014-15 school year, students will take the PARCC Assessments for Math and English Language Arts, and the Next Generation Assessments for Science and Social Studies. But we have one last chance to show what we know on the OAAs, and we are looking forward to it! Many teachers are sending home review questions so that students have an opportunity to practice on their own. Although it is easy to dismiss these assignments, please don’t do this! The expectations have increased this year, and schools must have at least 80% of their students scoring proficient or higher. In addition, as we prepare to transition to the new assessments, students must score Accelerated or Advanced on the current tests in order to have a chance at being Proficient in the future. The new tests will be extremely challenging, and the expectations for success have increased dramatically! So we want to do everything we can to prepare our students not only for this year, but for the future as well. So what can you do at home? First of all, please encourage your child to give their very best effort on all OAA review questions. Classroom teachers need to know what students are still struggling with in order to carefully plan their reviews. If students come back with blank papers, then they will spend too much time reviewing topics that might not need that amount of time. Second, please emphasize the importance of showing work on the problems. When students only write an answer or bubble in a choice, the teacher can’t help the student find the mistake if there was one. Finally, take the time to emphasize the vocabulary in the questions themselves so that students understand the language. The Math OAA is also a reading test! For more information on how you can help your child at home, please visit my math coach page and click on the OAA Information link: tiny.cc/mathcoach Please feel free to contact me with questions at: [email protected]
