The Route de Napoleon doesn’t take that much longer than the motorway and you pass close by to Chateau de Taulane - arguably the best golf course in the South of France and that’s saying something when you’re competing against Terre Blanche, Royal Mougins, Cannes Mougins, Barbaroux and Pont Royal! Incidentally, Cannes Mougins is investing heavily in better bunkering and a refined layout under the expert eye of Mark Vickery who used to play on the European Tour and has managed Royal Westmoreland, Goodwood and Les Bordes. The Loire has lost a little of its allure over recent years but there are still pockets of good golf around Le Mans, Tours and Orleans. Hotels are generally quite expensive but deals are out there and it is rather special

staying in an historic chateau. Special mentions for Sables Solesmes and Les Aisses as golf courses, and Touraine is good fun and very close to the hotels in and around Tours...Our favourites being Domaine de Beauvois and Chateau de Rochecotte. Inland Normandy has some truly wonderful courses; Golf Parc, Le Prieure and Champ de Bataille are my top three but there are half a dozen well worth playing. Canaries

The Canary Islands used to be a winter sunshine destination but more clients are realising the benefits of going there whatever the month. The weather gets even nicer from March through to October and the quality of hotels has increased remarkably.

Grand Residencia being one of the finest hotels anywhere in the islands and three of the six courses being good. Fuerteventura has a couple of lovely hotels and the golf courses offer nice ‘holiday golf’ so it’s great for enjoying a break away from the crowds.

Stay away from (or stay in if you’re looking for busy nightlife) the bigger resorts and towns during the summer months and choose a golf hotel for maximum value and the nicest atmosphere. Golf is half price or less during the summer (and even free if you’re staying with us at Abama in Tenerife) and the hotels are also priced very nicely during May, June and October as it’s the quiet period between the end of the ‘winter breakers’ and the beginning of the summer tourist.

Our hotel and golf prices at Fuerteventura are very attractive but flights can often be pricey so book early to avoid having to pay as much for your travel as your actual holiday. La Gomera, the last of the golfing Canary Islands, is relatively complicated to get to via a fast ferry crossing from Tenerife but it’s worth the effort with a superior four-star hotel, great good, stunning views and a beautiful golf course waiting for you. La Gomera is small and you’ll avoid the crowds. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a golf holiday with a discreet and ‘yesteryear’ feel about it.

Dubai maintains its reputation for high quality for pretty much everything. The golf explosion has settled down to leave half a dozen impressive courses and there’s accommodation to suit your preferred style and location. Flight prices are low but the holidays themselves are relatively expensive but the service, presentation and delivery is top of the league. We like the One & Only hotels and the Address Montgomerie is one of the plushest and most clubby five-star golf hotels north or south of the Equator! As well as this we’ve got some teriffic deals at hotels nearer the city centre. USA

The USA has many luxury destinations but we prefer to stick to the classic resorts that are famous or very, very good. After all, if you’re travelling for 14-20 hours door to door, you want to know that it’s worth going to! Pebble Beach, Palm Springs, San Diego and Cordevalle are all in California and all have their serious attractions. Combining all four with a couple of nights in San Francisco and/or a wonderful hotel in the Napa Valley vineyards (we know three that will impress) makes for a three-week tour that will live forever in your memories. Arizona is one of our favourites with stunning scenery and some of the most spectacular golf you’ll play. The hotels are of true five-star standard and their prices to us are very reasonable. Arizona is pretty much a year round destination but summer is obviously very hot and, believe it or not, low season so you could take advantage of the deals, play early to avoid the midday heat and get a lot of value for your money. And the flights are cheaper too. PInehurst in North Carolina is worthy of a solid week’s golf and is only a two hour drive from Charlotte to which there are direct flights from the UK. Pinehurst - with no less than three hotels and eight golf courses - is a golfing Mecca. The food is good too. If you fancy having a fortnight away, turn Pinehurst into a two-centre holiday with the delights of Myrtle Beach and its myriad of courses, fabulous beaches and lively nightlife. Myrtle Beach is 21/2 hours from Pinehurst and 31/2 hours from Charlotte Airport and it’s just a bit further from Atlanta airport. Heading south from Myrtle Beach, there’s Hilton Head, Kiawah Island and Sea Island. For choice of golf and value, Hilton Head heads the list, Kiawah Island is an all-out sports resort with a choice of self-catering apartments, houses and a five star hotel and makes it very easy to enjoy yourself. And if you’re after seriously good accommodation, service, food and one of the finest courses I’ve ever played, choose Sea Island. The other two courses at Sea Island (The Retreat and Plantation) are good but the Seaside course is a masterpiece. For Florida, we tend to book most holidays on the west coast during the dull UK winter months. The west coast has the better weather and beaches and tends to have the slightly better golf resorts. The Ritz Carlton Golf Resort in Naples is wonderfully placed and its two Greg Norman courses, as well as a couple of local ones, are perfect. We’ve yet to come across a less than excellent Norman-designed course and we rate Tiburon Black and Gold as first class...Indeed, they’re good enough for both the LPGA and PGA Tours! Innisbrook near Tampa has four courses and is a big, friendly resort complex. Copperhead is its best course but the other three are good too....That’s 72 holes of great golf in an ideal climate on your hotel or apartment doorstep. Innisbrook also offer us a very attractive bed, golf and half board package...Hard to find in the USA and the value-for-money is hard to beat anywhere.
