THE JOURNEY OF ADVENT Have you ever gone on a long drive to a place that you’ve never been before? Did it feel like it took forever to reach your final destination? Have you ever repeated that trip or returned home and found that the journey didn’t seem so long once you knew where you were going? Knowing our destination seems to make our travels swifter or more bearable, even if length of time and distance do not change. There is something about knowing where we are going that quickens our step, fuels our desire, and sets our minds and hearts in a forward direction. The Season of Advent is a journey which places before us our destination as a Church. Together as Christians, we are on this journey to the heavenly kingdom. Our journey may, therefore, seem long and tiring. But, if we reflect a little bit more on our Christian experience, perhaps we have already experienced something about our final destination that makes it more familiar than previous imagined. Throughout the four weeks of Advent, the prayer of the Church, the Scripture readings, ritual gestures and symbols, and our celebration of Eucharist hold before us our destination. It is not a geographical location, but a person: Jesus Christ. We believe that he has ushered in the Reign of God through his birth, life, death, resurrection and ascension. Jesus is the one we have come to know by his presence among us two thousand years ago and his continued presence among us through the power of the Holy Spirit. He is our final destination because he will present us to the Father at the end of time, but he also encourages us on our journey as he travels the road with us through the Holy Spirit. Advent enables us to enter more deeply into the mystery of our destination by celebrating the Christ who 2 IMMACULATE CONCEPTION PARISH - MALDEN/MEDFORD

strengthens our steps: as we remember the events leading up to his first coming into the world; as we bid him to come into our lives today through his powerful Spirit; and as we long for his coming in glory at the end of time bringing the fullness of the Kingdom promised us. We only know about the promise of Christ’s return because he has already dwelt among us. Though fully divine, he became fully human for our sake, being born over two thousand years ago in Bethlehem to the Virgin Mary. We remember this wonderful event, the Nativity, the Incarnation, with jubilant celebration each year at Christmas. Advent is not only a time to prepare our hearts to celebrate the mystery of the birth of Our Lord: his First Coming, but also to prepare for His Second Coming, at the end of time. Our faith promises that Jesus will come again in glory at the end of time. Our lives should be marked by joy and hope that the Season of Advent offers as we await the Lord’s return. Peace be with you, Father Albert L. Capone

FATHER ROGER TO RETURN TO TANZANIA Fr. Roger a diocesan priest from the Archdiocese of Songea, Tanzania in East Africa has been with us here in Immaculate Conception Parish for the past eight months. It was Fr. Roger’s plan to stay with us for two years as he studied at Boston College. However, his plans have been interrupted and he must now return to his Archdiocese of Songea. Father will be leaving us tomorrow Monday, December 5th. We thank Fr. Roger for his kindness, ministry and joy that he has shared with our parish. We promise Father our prayers for a safe journey home and much goodness as he resumes his parish ministry.

FATHER DAVID O’LEARY appointed Rector of Good Shepherd Parish, Wayland It is with great joy that we announce: His Eminence, Cardinal Sean O’Malley has appointed Father David O’Leary as Rector of Good Shepherd Parish, Wayland effective January 1, 2017 Although it is sad to see Fr. O'Leary leave our parish, we offer him our prayers and best wishes as he prepares to move to his new assignment. Fr. O’Leary will be joining Bishop Robert Reed, Auxiliary Bishop of Boston and Pastor of Good Shepherd Parish in the ministry and spiritual care of the parish. As all our Auxiliary Bishops, Bishop Reed has overwhelming responsibilities throughout the Archdiocese of Boston, therefore, to assist him, Fr. O’Leary will have the day to day administration and financial responsibility of Good Shepherd Parish with its two Churches that of Saint Anne and Saint Zepherin.

We invite our entire Parish to join with Father O'Leary in a special Mass of Thanksgiving on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 4:00 PM A simple reception will immediately follow in the Church Hall for the opportunity to individually bid Father O’Leary farewell

ALTAR BELLS TO RING AT CONSECRATION We have reintroduced the ringing of altar bells at the consecration of the Mass. Many of our parishioners have requested that the bells ring once again as the priest holds up the Sacred Host and the Sacred Chalice during Mass. A tradition long held in the Church to allow the faithful to know when the most sacred part of the Mass was happening, a tradition needed especially in large cathedrals when there were no sound systems and poor lighting. As modern technology has allowed us to see and hear more clearly the beauty of silence at the sacred moments has taken the place of the bells, both traditions are equally reverent. Therefore, we will ring the bells at all Masses in the main Church and silence will remain during at all Masses in the chapel. DECEMBER 4, 2016 - SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT | 3
