magine undertaking the physical challenge of being part of the toughest footrace on earth, running across the Sahara Desert in Southern Morocco. There aren’t too many who would even contemplate the thought for one moment. However, there are two Novocastrians crazy enough to undertake such a challenge and who have put up their hands, all in the name of a good cause to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Newcastle NSW. Both work in Newcastle - James Reid (above left), is a pharmacist and owner of Docs Megasav Chemist at Marketown, and Drew Bogdanovs (above right) is the manager of Raw Café, and are in training for one of the biggest challenges of their life – it’s nothing but extraordinary. hen planning their semi retirement the owners of this stunning lakeside property started searching the internet for an ideal waterfront location – the criteria was the preferred north-easterly aspect, with a boat shed, jetty and water frontage. The search revealed a narrow sloping block located at the tip of Coal Point, just out from Toronto with a fantastic vista across Lake Macquarie, so after purchase, the wheels were set in motion to undertake a major renovation and building project. From the onset the project created a life of its own and according to all who worked on the construction there was always a positive energy pulsating through the house.

des Sables has been run for 27 years and is held in six stages over seven days, covering 250 kilometres across the Sahara Desert in Southern Morocco, with the contestants carrying all their supplies, clothing, and food and sleeping bags in their backpacks. Both rugby players for Merewether 1st Grade the twosome are keen to raise $100,000 for Ronald McDonald House. Their selection to compete is seen as a great honour, as only forty applicants throughout Australia gained a place in the line-up. James will be running in memory of his longtime English friend, Ben Trend, who competed in the Marathon des Sables a few years ago and sadly died as a result of a surfing accident when holidaying in South Africa.

Ben’s family with the support of the local Rugby fraternity formed a foundation in memory of his name, “The Ben Trent – Get Involved Foundation”, which raises money to assist underprivileged kids growing up in their hometown of Blackpool. “In 1996 we toured Australia together and I was so inspired by his effort in completing the marathon and the resultant success of his foundation that I wanted to do something positive here in Newcastle. When I worked in Doc’s Pharmacy at John Hunter Hospital, I experienced firsthand every day what sick and injured children and families go through,” said James. “I have done a 100 kilometre trek, which was one of Ronald McDonald House’s fundraising efforts, so thought ‘why not combine out-of-season football fitness with charity?’”

Both men have undergone their own physical challenges in their life. Drew faced difficult times when aged 19 he fractured a bone in his neck playing rugby and underwent some challenging times recovering, and James broke three vertebrae in his back and other associated injuries as a result of a snowboard accident. Both regained physical health and continued their rugby careers. However, now in their early 30s they agree that rugby players do eventually have their time when they have to hang up their boots, due to the physicality of the game! Genesis Fitness Club has given a complimentary membership for their training programme, which is utilised daily. The cost of participating in the Marathon is at their own personal cost however, sponsors are being sought to cover travel insurance, training shoes and specialised race gear. Drew is investigating the nutritional side of the expedition and working on a plan to ensure they pack the right survival rations, which can be cooked on a small, solid-fuel portable stove procured on their arrival, an essential item which will be well utilised for each evening meal. The harsh reality of what the event will involve, such as running through the desert with temperatures rising to 40℃ and dropping to below zero at night, is starting to hit home as they undertake daily 50 kilometre road runs with weighted vests of upwards 15kgs. Plans are under way to tackle the sand hills of Stockton Bight this summer in the lead-up to the event which runs from 7th to 13th April, 2013. “Most of the run is through soft sand, so this will be great training and of course, we have to be prepared to sand storms as well,” said James. “We fly out on 2nd April and are bussed to the base camp. After the 5th April we have to be completely self-contained, as only a basic tent cover and water are provided by organisers.” The event’s charity fundraising campaign has already commenced, a degustation dinner hosted at Sprout, Newcastle, raising $2,500. A black-tie Valentine’s Day Ball will be held on Saturday 16th February, 2013, in West League Club’s Starlight Room. Bookings are open for tables of 10: $1500; or $150 per person. Sponsorship packages are available for corporate wanting to support the cause. “We hope to have the ballroom filled to capacity and raise a great deal of money,” said James. Also on the proposed agenda is a race, as part of Broadmeadow NJC’s Boxing Day meeting.

5 Years Celebrated with Style B rownsugar is one of the most popular lakeside restaurants and function centres on Lake Macquarie and is celebrating their 5th anniversary this month with a whole new renovation and glamourous makeover. The owners Michael Stefanov-Pearce and Samantha CookPearce have created a new look starting from the entry which is now carpeted with an ornate balustrade and an extra large chandelier overhead which reflects in the bronze mirror, metallic copper paint. This perfect entry creates the right ambience for guests on arrival for a wedding, private function or great night out dining in the restaurant. The restaurant has been fully painted, new wallpaper laid, exquisite lighting, new carpet, and gorgeous leather bench seating which wraps around the walls with backlit stone and bronze mirrors reflecting the lights. The new dimmed lighting creates a very relaxed dining experience with mood ambiance.

How You Can Help Attend the Black Tie Valentines Ball – 16th February, 2013, at the West Leagues Club Starlight Room, contact James Reid: 0405 088 917 or Drew: 0403 257 770. Pictred left to right: Chef Glen Herivel with Owner Michael Stefanov-Pearce and Head Chef John Guilfoyle.

The function room looks stunning having been fully painted, new wallpaper laid, five crystal chandeliers hung, and LED lighting installed. The romantic atmosphere is enhanced by flowing white sheer curtains, new carpet and new seating. The transformation is reflected by the large number of wedding receptions having been booked for the following 18 months. The location, corner King Street and The Esplanade, Warners Bay is right on the Esplanade at Warners Bay and captures the beautiful lake views and stunning sunsets across the road. To compliment the grandeur of the setting is the perfect food and menu served by Brownsugar’s head chef John Guilfoyle and his 2nd in charge Glen Herivel. Both John and Glen are two of Newcastle’s finest chefs and together they have created an outstanding ‘best ever’ menu proven by the compliments flowing endlessly from satisfied patrons saying Brownsugar’s menu cannot be surpassed.

John Guilfoyle has many culinary fans in the area with a strong following, and is known for his seafood flair and ‘fish of the day’ creations. John first worked as an apprentice at the same venue when the restaurant, then known as Bay Views, was in its heyday, before it was renamed five years ago to Brownsugar. Glen Herivel also needs no introduction to “foodies” in the Hunter. Luke Rounsley is a seriously talented young chef who not only assists John and Glen with mains, but creates beautiful handmade desserts. The team is supported by the very hard working apprentices, Oliver Buchanan and Duncan Williams. Owners Michael and Samantha say they are truly blessed to have such a team in their kitchen of this calibre. “The wedding and functions team over deliver on quality and timing on a weekly basis and guests are always commenting on

the quality of our events for such large groups,” said Samantha. “Guests return time after time to our restaurant once they have experienced the fine food we produce.” The introduction of the 1960 Split Screen Kombi, known as the “brownsugarbus” is a great new addition. Known as “Floss”, the Kombi is taking weddings to a new level providing great fun and photo opportunities. Capable of seating seven passengers, the vehicle is equipped with a great stereo system, LED lighting and a gorgeous raspberry and white striped interior. “Floss” was awarded “People’s Choice” and “Best Presented” Kombi from 172 Kombis at the Old Bar Kombi Festival in October. She is quickly becoming very popular with weddings and school formals. Brownsugar’s lunch menu is popular and the special runs all year round costing $25 for two courses.

It’s here that a higher level professional standard can be attained by those seeking long-term careers in tourism, hospitality and events – it’s the breeding ground for the next generation of hospitality workers, event managers, tourism operators and chefs, many of whom will become well-known names both in the Hunter and overseas. Established in 2009, the Hunter Valley Hotel Academy is an award-winning, state-of-the-art complex, which was a recent recipient in the 2012 Lower Hunter Urban Design Awards. The complex is recognised as a showcase building encompassing all aspects of environmental design and sustainability. Even the carpets and furnishings have been constructed of recycled materials.

The Academy is equipped for training in all aspects of hotel management, incorporating a fully functioning restaurant and coffee shop, commercial kitchen, conference facilities, accommodation, front office and reception. The building’s setting and modern design provides an eyecatching and welcoming focal point to Kurri Kurri Campus, as it sits comfortably in its environment amongst a collection of old and new buildings across the semi-rural Kurri Kurri Campus, which was the former Kurri Kurri Boys Home from 1969 to 1979. The Hunter Valley Hotel Academy was a concept developed by Hunter TAFE and local tourism and hospitality industry partners.

The training offered by the Academy incorporates a unique blend of options that include workshops, face-toface and individual learning programs, and the recognition of prior learning. The delivery of courses is flexible, including on-line study as well as integrated work experience either in paid employment or within the Academy’s training kitchens, conference, accommodation, function, restaurant, and meeting room facilities. The Academy cost approx. $7million to build and is a significant piece of public infrastructure that is already contributing to the growth and development of a strong and sustainable tourism, events-management and hospitality industry across the Hunter Region.

STORY AND IMAGES MARILYN COLLINS

The Hunter Region abounds in natural beauty providing a never-ending source of inspiration to someone with creative and artistic yearnings.

B

orn in Barmera, SA, Dorothy Compton grew up travelling and living with her parents through South Australia, Victoria and NSW, giving her an appreciation of country environment. Now a Cessnock-based professional artist and art teacher, Dorothy gains most of her inspiration from the nearby Hunter Valley Gardens at Pokolbin, a place where she spends many hours walking the eight kilometres of nature trails and photographing mature stunning flowers and trees throughout the seasons. “Art is my life; I live it and am surrounded by it,” says Dorothy, who lives in a quaint, 1920’s former timber church, positioned in one of the town’s side streets, which she purchased five years ago. Dorothy’s colourful paintings hang on the walls throughout the open- plan studio where Dorothy and her students set up their easels or work from long, purpose-built benches. The building is perfectly suited for Dorothy’s professional and personal life as if meant to be, however, it wasn’t love at first sight. “I had been searching for a home which had a garage which I could convert to an art studio without success. I had been travelling to the Hunter from Lake Macquarie for a number of years and knew the region well. In desperation, I finally consented to make an inspection of this former church, standing on a narrow block of land with no street appeal. On

walking inside, I was totally amazed by the size of the main open space, as the outside view was deceiving.” The building had gone through many incarnations after starting life as a Seventh-day Adventist church, then a bookshop and residence. Dorothy had the creative foresight to look past the glueddown rubber-backed carpet laid throughout and the walls of multi-coloured layered paint. “I literally took a shovel and scrapped the carpet off the floor to reveal the original timber floorboards, painted the internal walls white throughout and gave the exterior a new plum shade. Behind the great open space of the main room is a galley kitchen, sizeable master bedroom and a bathroom. At the rear is a plant-filled sunroom opening onto the back garden with rear-lane access. The location was perfect, being within walking distance from the Cessnock CBD and Dorothy gave the building a new and colourful life. The love of gardening seems to go hand in hand with artists, who love to be surrounded by colour. They are typically great gardeners and Dorothy was no exception, planting a charming cottage garden behind a timber picket fence. Today, roses climb trellises and a riot of colourful plants spill across the front entrance and its pathway. Art has been in her life from an early age. Dorothy remembers being an eight-year -old at school and being told to pencil sketch the British Isles.
