The Event

The beautiful backdrop of Annali Farm sets the stage for the seventh annual 2015 Chicago Hunter Derby. Rooted in tradition, this one-of-a-kind competition, showcasing the finest horses in the country, is the highlight of the Weekend in the Country. The Chicago Hunter Derby invites exhibitors and spectators alike, to join in on a weekend-long event of food, shopping, entertainment and family fun, all in the name of fund-raising for three deserving charities. The Chicago Hunter Derby provides a perfect opportunity for philanthropic companies to access some of the most affluent and influential Chicagoans, as well as a national audience. The derby attracts more than 500 spectators over the entire weekend. For just a $25 donation upon entry, Saturday brings the $5000 USHJA National Hunter Derby to the beautiful grass field, followed by the first round of the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, presented by CP. Vendor row will be open for shopping and casual fare and refreshments will be available in the main tent. As soon as the competition on the field concludes, the celebration begins under the tent, with the Derby After Dark. Exhibitors, sponsors and spectators enjoy music, food and cocktails and get ready to kick-off the most coveted day of the weekend. Sunday opens with more shopping, kids activities, including the famous horseless horse show and petting zoo, the exclusive champagnebrunch, open-bar, silent auction, live raffle, Calcutta, the Millcreek hounds and, of course, the second round of the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, presented by CP. The top horse/rider combinations from Saturday’s first round return for the exciting handy round of competition. The horse/rider combination with the most points from both rounds of competition leads the victory gallop as the winner.

The USHJA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Its vision is that the hunter/jumper community embraces, supports, and protects the people and horses who give their hearts to this sport. It achieves this vision by: Supporting the basic needs of USHJA members who do not have the financial means to do so themselves following an accident, catastrophe or illness; inspiring USHJA members facing adversity through exceptional experiences; empowering USHJA members to further their education; and preserving and protecting the history and tradition of the hunter/jumper sport. The USHJA Foundation is funded through charitable contributions received primarily from individuals. Learn more at ushjafoundation.org.

The Derby

Since the discipline of hunters is deeply rooted in tradition, the derby programs were created to bring that tradition and the art of horsemanship back to the show ring, both the National and International Derbies will feature obstacles that are reminiscent of the hunt field, such as natural post and rail, stone wall, white board fence or gate, coop, aiken, hedge, oxer, brush, logs and natural foliage. Each Derby will have two rounds of competition: a Classic Hunter Round and a Handy Hunter Round. The first round will be judged on performance, hunter pace, jumping style, quality and substance and movement of the horse. The score from this round will rank the top horse/rider combinations who will then return to compete in the second round. The second round scores reflect brilliance of pace and handiness. In each round, one point will be added to the base score for any high-option fences jumped without major fault, for a maximum of four additional points. First round scores will be added to the second round scores and determine the final placings of the class. The primary difference between the International and National Derbies is the height of the fences. The National Derby fences are set at 3’, with four high-option fences set at 3’5”. The International Derby fences will be set 3’6” to 4’0” in height, with higher option fences set up to 4’3”.
