From The President Hello Everybody, Well, another summer has gone by, and it is almost fall. They seem to go by a lot faster the older we get. I hope everybody had a great summer. The freezers should be full of salmon because the fishing was pretty good. The Annual Brew City tournament went off without Steve Franke a hitch this year. The weather was great (even the weather men don’t know how to tell weather). The fishing was great, and I hope everybody had a great time. Let’s all say congratulations to Jason Woda for coming in with the winning weight. We all need to say good job to Todd Pollesch, Kurt Pokrandt, Bob Wincek and all that helped to make this a fantastic tournament on a Great Lake. Without all the help that goes into this tournament it just wouldn’t happen. So I just want to say thank you to all of you that helped and hope to see you there next year. I don’t think everybody attends the Fish–ins. You don’t know what you’re missing. Kurt has the top three boat captains tell there secrets for that day. I know we all have room for improvement, and some of the tips just might put you in the top three. Let’s all give Kurt and all that help him pull these Fish-ins off. I don’t know where you can go and eat (Karl’s great food) and drink all you want for five dollars. We also have some of the best bakers in the club that bring some low fat desserts to all the Fish-ins. So if you didn’t make it out this year I hope you can join in the fun next year. I know it took a while to get those scales working at the gas dock and the cleaning station. I made quite a few trips to make that happen. All we need to do now is weigh those fish and enter them in the year long contest. Dick Hanson and Barb are waiting to see more fish weighed and some new faces at the banquet. Don’t forget the meetings start the second Tuesday in September thru May. The board tries to get speakers that help all of us learn more about fishing or what is going on in Lake Michigan. If anybody thinks they might know of someone that could speak and benefit the club, tell someone on the board, and we will try to get them to speak at our club meeting. I don’t know if I will be at the September meeting. I’m going in for surgery to remove part of my kidney.

Brown Trout Chomping on Round Gobies

Second place went to Kurt Pokrandt and the crew of Silver King Charters.

Above: Tom Neubauer presents Ted Foti with his $1,000 check for the Biggest Chinook - donated by Roger Stack,“fishin’hole”.

The brown trout fishery in Lake Michigan, like the salmon fishery, is supported by stocking originally done to help control populations of alewife, an invasive fish species, but now done as well to support what’s become a popular fishery. Now, brown trout appear to be chomping on a newer invasive fish species – round gobies – helping fuel good survival and fishing, says Brad Eggold, DNR fisheries supervisor for southern Lake Michigan. “One of the things we’re finding is the trout species are less discriminating when it comes to food, compared to Chinook,” he says. “We know from stomach samples they really go after round gobies, and we know there are a lot of gobies. That could be why we are seeing really good survival of the fish and good condition.” “We’ve really seen an uptick in brown trout fishing probably in the last 10 years, primarily in bigger harbors like Milwaukee and Racine and Sheboygan,” he says. Winter fishing in the mouths of harbors has been particularly popular, he says. Lake Michigan fishing has been going strong this summer. “The numbers and variety of fish anglers have been catching, particularly in the last four weeks or so, has been excellent,” Eggold says. “We’ve settled into a pretty good summer pattern. The warm weather and winds have pushed the warmer surface water out into the lake, bringing cooler water temperatures closer to shore and making it easier to catch salmon and trout.”

Lake Michigan Brown Trout New State Record 41.8 lb monster a sign of the great fishery MADISON – It’s official: the 41 lb., 8 oz. brown trout Roger Hellen of Franksville caught in Lake Michigan on July 16 is now a Wisconsin state record fish. And it may be a world record, too. The DNR received Hellen’s application shortly after he recorded his catch and has confirmed the new state record, which smashes the old record by nearly 5 lbs. The previous record was 36 lbs. 8.9 ounces and 40.5” for a fish caught August 23, 2004, in Lake Michigan.

measured 40.6 inches long and weighed 41 pounds 8 ounces on a certified scale at a local meat market, according to Cheryl Peterson, the state fisheries technician who weighed, measured and processed the fish at the tournament. With that certified weight, Hellen’s fish would appear to squeak by the 41 lb. 7 oz. world record brown trout caught last year in the Big Manistee River in Michigan. “It was very exciting – it was certainly the biggest trout or salmon I’ve ever seen,” says Peterson, a fish techni-

Hellen’s is the ninth state record set this year, and the first for a fish caught by hook and line. The other records have been for fish taken using alternate methods, including a spearing record for lake sturgeon and six bowfishing records. One of those bowfishing records, for smallmouth buffalo, was first established in March and has changed hands twice since, once in April and again on July 1. Hellen caught the fish in Lake Michigan north of Racine while competing in a fishing tournament. The fish

cian on Lake Michigan since 1997. “We knew as soon as it was on the scale it was going to be a new state record.” The lure was a blue-and-green spoon trolled about 10’ below the surface. Hellen’s brown was weighed on a certified scale at Brossman’s Meat Market while being witnessed by three butchers (with at least 23 years of experience each), Hellen and a SalmonA-Rama official. ‘’They [first] went to a meat market down the road,’’ butcher Jeff Luzich said. ‘’They didn’t have a scale big enough.’’

‘I’ve fished out on Lake Michigan and caught browns of 10-15 pounds, [but nothing like that],’’ Hellen said. ‘’It was a beautiful fish.’’ “This is great for the lake, great for the club, great for the fishery,” said Tom Pietila, president of Salmon Unlimited of Wisconsin. *****

Petition Filed with Natural Resources Board to Protect Safety of Great Lakes Sports Anglers Poynette---The Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, the Wisconsin Federation of Great Lakes Sportsfishing Clubs and the Northeastern Wisconsin Great Lakes Sports Fishermen and five leaders of those organizations who have fished on Lake Michigan for over 200 years filed a petition with the Natural Resources Board to adopt rules to separate the presence of commercial fishing trap nets from the heavily used sports fishing areas off the Sheboygan, Manitowoc and Two Rivers Harbors during the very busy sports fishing seasons of June, July and August. This petition was filed as a result of the tragic accident off the Sheboygan Harbor in late June when a sportsfishing boat became entangled in a commercial trap net and capsized with the loss of life of one sports angler and two others being rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard. The three organizations petitioning for the rule change have repeatedly opposed the expansion of trap netting off these harbors during the busy summer sportsfishing months. The groups have cited two similar sports angler fatalities in Michigan. In addition, Wisconsin DNR investigative reports showed that trap nets have

entangled a substantial amount of s fishing gear from many sports fishing boats. The organizations specifically requested that the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board adopt rule to either: (1) restore the prohibition of the use of trap nets from June 28th to Labor Day of each year in Zone 3 of Lake Michigan and also move the date of the closure back to May 31 of each year; or (2) restrict the placement of trap nets in Zone 3 during June, July and August to five miles or more from the Two Rivers, Manitowoc and Sheboygan harbors. The groups have been very careful not to fault the commercial fisherman whose nets were entangled because the nets in question were in full compliance with the current DNR regulation governing. However, the DNR rules in the areas of the Sheboygan, Two Rivers and Manitowoc Harbors, are inadequate to protect sports anglers because of the inherent danger of trap nets in these heavily fished areas during the months of June, July and August. The Wisconsin Wildlife Federation is made up of 168 hunting, fishing, trapping and forestry organizations located throughout the State of Wisconsin and is the state

affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation. The Federation is dedicated to conservation education and the advancement of sound conservation policies. The Wisconsin Federation of Great Lakes Sports Fishing Clubs is comprised of twelve sports fishing clubs from Kenosha to Marinette. It is dedicated to the protection of the Great Lakes sports fishery and the sports anglers that use the Great Lakes. Virtually all of its members are avid sports anglers on Lake Michigan and many fish those portions of the shores of Two Rivers, Manitowoc and Sheboygan. The Federation has been heavily involved in this trap netting issue since its inception. The Northeast Wisconsin Great Lake Sports Fishermen are comprised of eight hundred members mainly located in the Two Rivers and Manitowoc areas. They are avid and active anglers largely in the area that is trap netted of the Two Rivers and Manitowoc area. They have been very actively involved in trying to protect the lives and safety of their members by actively opposing the placement of trap nets in those portions of Lake Michigan that are heavily used by their members and many other anglers.

Court set Aug 23 for arguments on Asian Carp Case Sets aside August 30-31 for testimony in matter A hearing in a multistate lawsuit that demands tougher federal and municipal action to prevent Asian carp from overrunning the Great Lakes and decimating their fishing industry. Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced that the States of MI, WI, MN, OH and PA filed their brief and supporting papers with the United States District Court, in response to briefs filed by defendants U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. The suit filed in U.S. District Court in northern Illinois accuses the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago of creating a public nuisance by operating locks, gates and other infrastructure through which the carp could enter the lakes. The federal district court in Chicago hearing the federal lawsuit scheduled the first hearing for Monday, August 23. The court also reserved August 30 and 31 for hearing testimony in the matter. The States are asking the court to immediately order defendants to implement best available methods to block the passage and to capture or kill bighead and silver carp in the Chicago waterway, including installing block nets, gates and screens, and other interim physical barriers to fish passage between the waterway and Lake Michigan, and temporarily closing and ceasing operation of the locks at the O'Brien Lock and Dam and the Chicago River Controlling Works except as needed to protect public health and safety. “We are asking the court to order both immediate preventive and longterm solutions. In the short term, we want certain locks closed, effective

barriers created to prevent continued fish migration, and Asian carp killed that have already passed the Barrier System.,” said Van Hollen. “Longterm, we think the best solution is the one nature once provided: the physical separation o the Great Lakes basin and the Mississippi river systems.” In their submissions, the defendants argued the threat of Asian carp entering the Great Lakes is neither imminent or irreparable, that the court should favor operation of the locks as usual over implementing measures that might interfere with river commerce, and that the nuisance case itself should be dismissed because it presents a political question not suited for the courts and the action is displaced by federal laws related to the problem, such as one setting up an electric barrier demonstration project. "We look forward to our chance to be heard in court," Van Hollen said. The States' brief responds to all defendants' arguments opposing the preliminary injunction. That brief, and accompanying papers can be viewed at:
