Welcome to the final newsletter for this year. This edition is packed full of stories and photos celebrating College life and student achievements. Congratulations to all the students who have excelled in so many different areas and are making the most of the many opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities. Shane Parker, Head of Languages, and I had the opportunity to visit our sister school in Fuzhou, China, at the end of last term and I then joined the Tasmanian Government State Growth trade delegation to Shanghai and Beijing. Together with the Principals of Launceston College and New Town High School, we promoted the benefits of Tasmanian education to groups of international agents. The International Student Program at Hobart College has been operating since 1988 and with the most international student enrolments in the State, our students have many opportunities to learn about other cultures and languages. Term 4 is very short and our focus is on helping all students achieve their learning goals for 2015. Students in pre-tertiary subjects are busy preparing for folios, practical performances and end of year examinations whilst students on vocational pathways are completing the requirements for their certificate programs. Students will be discussing their internal assessments in all subjects with their teachers over the next few weeks so if you have any concerns about your son’s/daughter’s progress please contact their teacher. There are many opportunities for extra assistance for students through the tutorial and Home Group programs, our library staff and Student Services team, so please encourage your son/daughter to make the most of all the support available to them. Home Group teachers are also working with students to help them make informed decisions about their future pathways. Good luck to all students for the rest of this year and stay focused on the goals you set in February. Tracy Siedler Principal

Tuckwell Scholarship

Congratulations to Damian Mazur, the only Tasmanian candidate to receive a prestigious Tuckwell Foundation scholarship to attend university at ANU. The program attracted 742 applicants, 244 students were shortlisted including three Hobart College students: Damian, Lewis Johnson and Mollie Berry. These were narrowed down to a group of 75 finalists who spent a weekend in Canberra being interviewed. Damian will receive $21,700 a year for the length of his undergraduate degree as well as ongoing academic and career mentoring. He intends to study Politics, Philosophy and Law with a view to helping disadvantaged people in remote communities. “I want to give everyone an equal start in life through education and empowerment.” he said. Tracy Siedler congratulated Damian, saying: “Damian succeeds in all his pursuits because of his clear focus, extraordinary work ethic, enthusiasm for life and learning, and his ability to juggle diverse interests. There is no doubt that Damian will use his many talents and abilities to meaningfully contribute to society in the future. He is an outstanding example of a young person who takes advantage of the many opportunities available to all students in public education.”

Once again the Hobart College Art Department has proved its excellence taking out the Young Archies overall award for the third year in a row. Rhona MacTavish won the best portrait overall for “Anti Zen”, her drawing of fellow Hobart College student Zen Cane. Rhona also won the Senior Secondary award and the DoE award. Sophie Hall was the runnerup in the Senior Secondary category with her pen drawing “I’m Blue”. The Young Archies exhibition was at TCOTA in Hunter Street. Congratulations also to Rhona and Sophie’s teacher, Wayne Brookes, who has won a University of Tasmania commission to paint a portrait of Sir Guy Green.

German Scholarship winner Hobart College is a PASCH (Partner School) with the Goethe Institute and Hobart College German 2 student, Julia Rhodes, has won a scholarship to study at a Goethe Institute in Germany for three weeks in January 2016. Julia only began her study of German in February this year, yet she has been working so hard in the German 2C class that she can now read, write and speak German at a basic level, as well as understand the spoken word. Her time in Germany will give her a great start to the 3C course next year. Congratulations Julia!

Hc science spectacular - ignite your imagination

This year, for National Science Week, Hobart College Physical Science 2 students designed, organised and performed a Science Spectacular Circus for Snug Primary Grade 4 classes. On August 21, the Snug students were bedazzled and amazed by some spectacular science tricks such as Disappearing Styrofoam, The Van de Graaf Generator, Glitter Bug Magic, The Table Cloth Trick,  Dry Ice Magic Bubbles, Balloon Explosions and the making of Elephants’ Toothpaste. While waiting for the science show, Snug students were guided around the Sustainability Learning Centre and the gym (where they practised rock climbing on the climbing wall) with a group of Outdoor Leadership students. Congratulations to all students who participated in this successful event. 3

Titration Medallists

Congratulations to our Year 12 Titration team who won silver and gold awards in the National Finals held on 23 September. The Titration Competition is organised by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute in partnership with the University of Tasmania, School of Physical Science, Chemistry Department. This event is recognised as one of the most rigorous and rewarding scientific challenges for senior secondary students. This year two teams from Hobart College participated in this enduring event which attracted over 350 Science students from across Tasmania: Year 11 team – Madeleine Taylor, Kai Hoddy and Samuel Nezic (below left) and Year 12 team – Kate Easther, Elena Devlin and Sarah Van Drunen (below right). Both teams achieved Certificates of Excellence in the Southern Schools Section with the Year 12 team invited to participate in the National finals in which they went on to win the silver and gold awards!

science week ‘all stars’

Owen Lennon was successful in being granted the ANZAAS scholarship to learn about Science and Technology on a four day trip to South Australia with other students from Australia and New Zealand. “I had a really interesting time visiting Universities, and research Institutions. Some highlights included: missile and battle simulations in anechoic chambers with enormous machinery; radar tracking of planes and drones; material design including the invention of excellent plastic mirrors and exosuits – which enable people to carry incredibly heavy loads with no extra power to the person; detecting gravitational waves with lasers; agricultural research; nanotechnology and marine biology. It was fantastic to meet amazing people, enjoy great food (most of the time) and be inspired by exciting research in all areas of science.”

‘Scibabe’ - is it good science?

Maths Relay

Third place winners: Jarrod Garlick, Lewis Johnson, Ben Wikstrom and Sam Mallick

Elena Devlin and Sam Mallick represented Hobart College at the Governor’s reception for National Science Week.

Dr. Yvette D’Entremont from the USA, otherwise known as ‘Scibabe’, visited Hobart College as part of the National Science Week delegation. Yvette has a background in theatre, chemistry and forensic science, and is a well-known science blogger who challenges misconceptions and what she calls pseudoscience. In particular she encouraged students to consider the lack of science data that is listed as ‘fact’ in modern foods and diets, health products and some pseudoscience alternative treatments which may do more harm than good. To celebrate Science Week, Laboratory Technician, Andrea Baker, set up a light show for parents to enjoy a hands-on display on Parent/Teacher evening.

Bridget Williams, Mollie Berry, Sarah Van Drunen and Sun Zheyuan

Recently the annual Mathematics Association of Tasmania Relay competition occurred at Rosny College. This year we had three teams representing Hobart College in the senior secondary section with one of the teams placing third. The relay consists of 10 questions which become progressively harder and are solved as a team of 4. We have included two sample questions that have been asked in the past if anyone is interested in testing their skills. The first is worth 5 marks and the second 20. Thank you to all of the students who participated and to Darryl Smith, Dawn Cripps and Anne Parrott who assisted as markers for the teams. The word prime in my dictionary is on a page which is a prime number. The product of the two pages at that opening is 812. On what page is prime defined? A 24-hour digital clock shows hours using two digits and minutes using two digits. How many times between 1 minute after midnight [00 : 01] and 1 minute to midnight on the same day [23 : 59] does the clock show the same time when read forwards or backwards as does, for example, 15 : 51?

Music news

On Sunday, 20 September Hobart College’s final classical recital for 2015 was held at St George’s church, Battery Point. The afternoon was a fantastic showcase of engaging music and talented performers! Special thanks were given to our classical program coordinator, Jennifer Marten-Smith, who has worked tirelessly mentoring, supporting and inspiring all our classical students to perform at their best. Thank you Jennie for the outstanding contribution you have made towards the music department this year!

The playoff was held at Launceston’s Club 54 with seven bands competing in the Senior Secondary section. The band received a trophy and an amplifier for the College. Alongside ‘Jensen’, fellow Hobart College bands, ‘Art School Bullies’ and Finn Rees’ ‘Close Counters’ are all possibilities to perform at the Falls Festival this year.

Tasmania - China Trade Delegation

Principal, Tracy Siedler, and Shane Parker, AST Languages, travelled to Fuzhou as part of the Tasmanian Government State Growth delegation to China on 8 September. The eight day trip allowed the Tasmanian delegation to showcase the benefits and opportunities in Tasmania’s food, education and tourism sectors. During this time, delegates were able to visit our sister school of ten years, Fuzhou No 8 Middle School, where the delegation met with senior staff, toured the new school and boarding facilities and discussed the establishment of a Confucius Classroom at Hobart College. This discussion culminated in the joint signing of a Project Proposal by Principal Chen of Fuzhou No 8 Middle School and Tracy Siedler, Principal of Hobart College.

Fuzhou No 8 Middle School visits

In August we were happy to welcome students and teachers from our sister school in China, Fuzhou No 8 Middle School, for their annual study tour in Australia. For the twelve students and five teachers this was their summer school break and they arrived to find Hobart at its glorious winter best, dusted with snow. The snow did not prevent the students from enjoying all that Hobart College has to offer: they enjoyed sports, cooking, English and other classes and got to know some local students. They took day trips to MONA, Bonorong, Cadbury and Kingston Beach. Mount Wellington was off the agenda this year as roads were still closed but our visitors were grateful to sample some local Valhalla ice-cream in compensation. The tour ended, as always, with a celebratory farewell party that included a highly competitive game of musical chairs! We especially wish to thank the families of our Hobart College community who so generously opened their homes to our visitors. Hosting is such a valuable and rewarding experience for all involved and we hope that other families will consider joining in for next year.

homestays wanted in 2016

If you and your family wish to be part of Hobart College’s exciting, ongoing relationship with international educational organisations, please consider opening your home and hosting a student in 2016. Next year we will have 3 short-term visits from Japan and China. We start the year with a 9 night visit from students of the prestigious Ritsumeikan School in Japan (March 2 - 11). We will have two more short term visits of approximately a week from Fuzhou, China and Kagawa, Japan later in the year. The homestay payment rate for 2016 is $36 per night per student. If you are interested in any or all of these visits or simply want to be placed on our homestay register, please contact Elizabeth O’Meagher [email protected]. gov.au or phone 6220 3133.

Utas economics challenge

The Economics Challenge was designed by UTAS staff to help students explore issues in economics. The day included a lecture by the state’s Treasurer, Peter Gutwein, an activity considering how fisheries should be managed and an international trade simulation which had students cutting, colouring, pasting, wheeling, dealing and trading to amass a fortune in edible goodies.

Business winners

Congratulations to Damien Mazur and Mollie Berry (pictured above with teacher, Matt Dalziel) who received High Distinctions in the Australian Business Studies Competition, run by the UNSW and sponsored by AGSM. In addition, 21 other Hobart College students participated in the Australian Business Studies Competition. Since the competitions started in 1999, they have grown in size and reputation to become the largest and most prestigious competitions of their kind for secondary students. Economics and Business Studies competitions are run during May every year and we hope to participate in them again next year and encourage anyone who is interested in Businessrelated subject areas to give them a go. Over 30 Hobart College students participated in the 2015 CPA Australia Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition this year, with some terrific work submitted from many of our students. George Wassif’s, ‘Burritos Bros.’ business plan for a mobile burritos food van was particularly noteworthy and was a state finalist for the Tasmanian division.

meet the business leader

Early in Term 3, a large group of students from Accounting, Business Studies 2 and 3, Economics and Cert II in Business Administration attended the “Meet the Business Leader” seminar at the Grand Ballroom at the Hotel Grand Chancellor. They were joined by other college students from around Hobart. This is an annual event that is generously hosted by Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand. Students were able to hear from a range of people working in businesses around Hobart, along with an inspirational address by a young trainee of CAANZ. Students were also treated to a free lunch while being able to network with business people. It was fantastic for our students to be able to find out first-hand about working as a ‘real life’ business person and also discover some of the amazing opportunities both locally and internationally that are on offer for graduates of Business degrees. Students were really positive about their experience, saying that it was “informative and fun” and “It was fantastic to hear from University Students what is required for further study and when you are on work placement/internships”. Special thanks goes to CAANZ for organising this very worthwhile event. We look forward to being involved again next year!

Hospitality in sydney

VET Hospitality and Kitchen Operations students enjoyed a 3 day trip to Sydney and the Blue Mountains. Students gained valuable experiences within the Hospitality Industry including participating in food and beverage workshops at the Blue Mountains International Hotel School, tours of Sofitel Sydney and the QT Boutique Hotel. We enjoyed fine dining dinners, cakes and coffees and explored the sites of Sydney. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to gain an understanding into the range of future career paths available in the Hospitality Industry.

Industry luncheon The Industry Luncheon allowed our VET Hospitality and Kitchen Operations students the opportunity to thank members of the community for supporting the Hobart College VET program as well as to showcase the skills and knowledge that they have acquired both at College and on work placement throughout 2015. Kitchen Operations students incorporated a range of Tasmanian produce into their two course set menu which was enjoyed by guests from Government House, Mona, The Supreme Court, the Hairdressing Industry and Cascade Gardens.

On Wednesday 23 September the famous Hobart College Lap was once again run by many and won by a few! The VET Certificate II in Sport & Recreation students collected more than $455 to support Tents4Peace, a Tasmanian organisation that sends emergency aid to areas struck by disaster. Lap winner from 1989 and 1990, Daniel Smee, was the guest runner and came a creditable third 25 years later! Congratulations to our College Lap champions and all the staff and students who participated. Boys Winner: Davis Hinton 2mins 19secs; Girls Winner: Tamsyn Ayres 3mins 13secs. Thanks also to the VET Certificate II in Business students who provided food and drinks on their ‘Sunny’s Curry in a Hurry’ and ‘Gourmet Kennel’ stands and to VET Music students who entertained the crowd.

Mt hotham ski trip

On Sunday 23 August Hobart College students set off for an adventure of a lifetime. It was an early start for the students, waking between 4 – 5am, reaching the ‘bustling’ Hobart airport at 5.45am. The group departed Hobart at 7am and were on the way to glory and good times. After a gruelling bus ride we arrived at Hotham. Our first minutes on the slopes had us hooked, it was radical dude! The following days involved getting down with our boards and skis. We attended informative lessons and before long everyone on the trip was exceeding expectations. We experienced dumpings of snow with some foggy and windy days, but to our delight by the end of the week we lucked upon blue skies and sunshine. Although everyone’s first priority was improving skiing/boarding skills and enjoying the slopes, there was always room for banter, jokes, all-round tomfoolery, and snowball fights were a given. For the majority of people, days consisted of early starts in order to get the most time on the slopes. Every breakfast, lunch and dinner the Snowbird Inn put on a clinic in the kitchen. After one of the greatest weeks of our lives we would like to thank all students and teachers involved for one Wills McKay & Jac Ryan-Buchanan of the most successful and enjoyable trips the College has ever seen.

relation to studying for and sitting examinations you should speak with your Home Group or Subject teacher.   In addition, Student Services advisors, our Youth Worker and Senior School Psychologist are all available to assist you with preparation and any issues you may have in relation to the examination process. The TASC booklet “Student Guide to External Assessment 2015” is available for each student sitting an examination. Home Group Teachers will distribute the booklet. It is highly recommended that students and parents read the information in the booklet before exams commence, particularly in relation to medical certificates in the event of illness.

Remember to sign and bring your pink enrolment slip to every exam – this is your identification for and entrance to the exams. Best wishes to all students in their studies and examinations. reachout.com
