Ely College Newsletter

16th November 2016

From the Principal I am increasingly convinced that I have the best job in the world! Leading a school is complex and challenging, but the content of this newsletter should illustrate vividly to you why there is something to be excited about every day. With more than 1,100 students and 150 staff we doubtless make mistakes along the way, but I hope that you are feeling and seeing the impact of the improvements we are working hard to deliver.

Year 7

The length of this newsletter reflects the huge amount of work underway and the opportunities that there are for students here at Ely College. The new PLEDGES system is how we seek to extend the boundaries of learning and ensure all students get the most from what the school offers. Please encourage your children to engage with it and find that extra 10% I’ve asked everyone to seek this year.

The information has been collated and we received lots of really useful feedback which will be used to further improve the process for future years.

Since the last newsletter, we have launched our exciting new ‘Bishop Laney Sixth Form’, and hosted two very successful open evenings. The first reports have gone home for most year groups, and Year 11 are in the throes of Post-16 applications and mock exams. Site improvements are continuing, and we are gearing up for a busy and exciting Christmas period. My priority remains working to ensure the highest standards of teaching and care are in place for our students. We know that providing you with clear information and communication is hugely important, so we are keen to receive feedback. On 7th December I’ll be hosting a forum for Year 9 and 10 parents (see below) to hear your thoughts on topics such as communication, the House system, reporting and the start we’ve made to the year. Another date early in the new year for other parents will be confirmed soon. I hope many of you can make it. Thank you for your continuing support of the College. Richard Spencer – Principal

Thank you very much to all our Year 7 parents who took time to complete the Year 6 to Year 7 transition questionnaire.

The student responses were also very positive. It really is lovely to see just how well students have settled in to College.

Student Council We are in the process of launching our new student council structure that will empower all students. Shortly we will appoint House Leaders and Student Ambassadors from Year 10. The new structure will also incorporate an element of student voice representation from Years 7-10. We look forward to sharing more news about this in our next newsletter. Mrs S Goodey

PLEDGES We are delighted to announce the launch of the PLEDGES scheme. This is a scheme which recognises the breadth of experience that a young person achieves both in the College and outside of this setting. We are eager to acknowledge excellence and celebrate the achievements and the breadth of successes that all our students are involved with. -

-

We believe in an all-round education where ‘every child develops self-confidence, life-skills and leadership experiences’. We have developed and invested in a simple but broad set of ‘PLEDGES’ that students are expected to complete during the course of their time at Ely College, at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.

Christmas Concert Please make a note on your calendar: Monday 19th December 2016 at 7.00pm. Ely College will be hosting a Christmas concert in the Needhams hall. The Music and Drama Departments are busy putting plans in place for a festive evening and it would be lovely to see many of you here enjoying the occasion. Mr Mann

Maths Department Congratulations to Miss Denney who has recently been appointed Curriculum Leader for Maths. One of our initial priorities was to improve the Maths department and learning outcomes for all students. We have had a successful recruitment campaign and appointed skilled Maths teachers for Ely. We shall continue to work with Miss Denney and the Maths team to support and strengthen the department even further.

The PLEDGES scheme is designed to not only recognise achievement, but also to provide a structure for our young people to engage in new opportunities. Encouraging these skills will build confidence, provide a greater awareness of the world, foster life-long interests and hopefully add value to our local and wider community. The scheme will also be a great asset to further education or employment applications beyond Ely College as there will be a record of all that they have achieved. How can pupils earn their PLEDGES award? -

-

-

Within lessons and around the school - A pupil may collect ‘above and beyond’ PLEDGES points towards their badge by demonstrating PLEDGES values within a lesson or around Ely College. These points can accrue towards a student’s PLEDGES award. Session 6 - A pupil may engage in a wide range of Session 6 activities. These are the clubs and academic support groups that run at lunchtimes and after school. Beyond the classroom - Taking part in a school trip or residential experience such as Battlefields or Duke of Edinburgh or providing evidence of appropriate activities outside of school, such as Air Cadets or choir etc.

How a student will collect their evidence Each student will have their own PLEDGES record book. Evidence will be recorded by the pupil in conjunction with the Tutor. This will be monitored by Senior Tutors and Assistant Principals. Upon completion of all 7 PLEDGES categories the award will be issued; this will be achieved via House assemblies and noticeboards, with gold PLEDGES awarded by the Principal. Pupils will receive a certificate with the corresponding badge colour and a letter of praise and recognition will be posted home.

Diary Dates 16th Nov – Shakespeare Schools Festival performance at Mumford Theatre. 17th to 20th Nov – Y9 Battlefields trip. 18th Nov – Non-uniform day for charity - £1.00. 21st Nov to 2nd Dec – Y11 mock exams. 25th Nov – Staff training day – school closed to students. 30th Nov – Past Y11 GCSE certificate presentation evening. 1st to 6th Dec – LRC (Learning Resource Centre) Book Fair. 2nd Dec – Y7 taking part in a STEM day. 7th Dec – Parent Forum at 6.00pm. 9th Dec – 12 hours of sport. w/c 12th Dec – Christmas lunch for students. 13th Dec – Y7 Parents’ evening.

Kenya Trip Fundraising Fundraising is in full swing with students planning car washes, bag packing in Waitrose and curry evenings. Chloe Coxall is doing particularly well with weekly bake sales at a local netball club. The students are looking forward to their first school bake sale which will take place at lunch and break on Friday 18th November. Sam Evans and his family have arranged a Bandeoke (live band Karoke) on 28th January at Ely Tigers Rugby Club starting at 7.30pm. All proceeds will go towards Sam’s Kenya fundraising appeal.

Ely Christmas Lights Switch On On 25th November our Year 12 media students will be filming the Living Nativity in Ely City centre, in conjunction with local Churches. They are also going to edit the play in order to produce promotional material for next year’s event.

University bound! Fresher’s week 2016 is over and last years’ Sixth Form university applicants will now be settling down to the reality of study at a higher level and hopefully enjoying it! With such a vast choice of degree courses on offer these days, choosing the right one to go for is never going to be easy. Some students chose to continue with a subject that was already fairly familiar to them such as Sports Science, Sports Coaching, Business or Media, all having been on one of the very successful Level 3 Diploma courses on offer in the Sixth Form. Others however chose to take on the challenge of something less familiar such as Fashion Buying and Brand Management, Politics and International relations, Art History and Film Studies, Crime and Investigative Studies or Geography with Natural Hazards. Their chosen destinations were near and far. For those wishing to complete a degree course without the added cost of living away, Anglia

Two of our Year 11 students: Bethia Fisher and Thomas Mills, have been selected to play Mary and Joseph. It would be great if parents, students and staff could go along to support the production. Miss E Watkins

Future Careers We have been asked to signpost parents and carers to a useful website aimed at helping parents understand the world of careers to support your sons and daughters. http://www.parentalguidance.org. uk/

Ruskin University and the College of West Anglia proved popular choices while others ventured much further, for example to the University of Sussex, Nottingham Trent University and even as far as Plymouth to the University of St. Mark and St. John. Most students were able to secure their first choice university and for the first time, some students were fortunate enough to receive unconditional offers. Other students had to endure grueling auditions to secure their places, for example to do Acting and Theatre Arts but they did it and thankfully should now be on their way to a successful career in TV or Theatre. Watch this space! Feedback from the students rated the support that they had been offered by the College throughout the application process highly and hopefully they will come back at Christmas and give our current students a first-hand insight into what it is really like to be a university student. Old Uniform Donations Thank you to everyone who recently donated old, unwanted College uniforms. We are very grateful to parent, Mrs Sindle, who is working with Re-Imagine to ensure the clothing reaches charity organisations. Mrs Sindle is also arranging for 100 polo tops to be sent to GAGA (Goodwill and Growth for Africa) who will donate them to schools in Sierra Leone and Africa.

Social Media We are excited to announce we now have our very own Facebook page. In the past our Twitter account has been very successful and we shall continue to share information using Twitter, but we know that many parents and carers will be pleased to have the option to keep up to date on Facebook too. Our aim is to keep you informed with daily life at the College and with the positive changes that we are making. However, if visitors to our social media require a response, we urge them to contact the Houses in the usual manner. Please visit and ‘like’ our page to start seeing the updates.

It’s great to know that these items will be put to good use and make a real difference to children around the world.

Year 11 Many students attended the post-16 evening at College to find out more about the options available to them after their GCSEs. They have begun to attend open evenings, including Bishop Laney, to find out more about the courses available. All have spoken to their tutors about their plans, some will be having guidance meetings this term and all need to complete their application on the UCAS Progress website by Monday 12th December. Mr Spencer began the half term with a revision skills assembly and it has been followed up by tutors with activities designed to aid revision planning and organisation as mock exams begin on Monday 21st November. These will help staff to make their final predicted grades which will be used for the UCAS applications. The prom has been booked for Friday 7th July at The Maltings, Ely. Mrs Burrows is inviting students along to a Session 6 on Thursdays to help organise this exciting event!

Cake Sale A huge thanks to all the students and staff on the LRC Committee for organising and running a recent cake sale. The total amount raised of £116 will go towards purchasing exciting new fiction books for the LRC. Students involved have now been given the task of choosing which books to purchase.

If you have any concerns about revision, mock exams or UCAS applications, please contact Mrs Mustill. Mrs R Mustill _________________________________________________________

The Teensleep Study In my role as Child Protection Officer I have been shocked when speaking with students by the number of them that have problems with their sleep patterns. Although aware of the changes that happen to teenagers and their need to go to bed later and not rise until half the day has gone, it appears that many also suffer from disturbed and broken sleep. This

obviously then means they are not fully functioning when in school and can impact on their attainment. We are now involved in a piece of research by Oxford University which is seeking to educate students about sleep and try to improve their sleeping patterns. We are doing this during tutor periods throughout November. Students have been provided with a useful information sheet. News from the LRC (Learning Resource Centre) The Reading Group is taking part in a new book award called ‘The Bridge Award’. This is being run by a number of Cambridgeshire secondary schools and is supported by Heffer’s Book Shop. Each week students taking part have the chance to win a £10 Heffer’s book token. So far Adam Smeeton and Rosie Howard-Miller have each won. The Reading Group has read the long list and has voted for their top three to go forward for the short list. The award ceremony will take place in January 2017 and our students will be taking part in a competition to design the award, which will be given to the winning author. The knitting and crochet group has begun meeting in the LRC. Meetings are held every Wednesday lunchtime and everyone is welcome. th

The Staff Reading Group will meet on Monday 14 November after school in the LRC to discuss their first novel. The group is focusing on teenage fiction and has been reading ‘Northern Lights’ by Philip Pullman. Don’t forget to come along and support the LRC Book Fair – 1st to 6th December 2016. Ms A Shaw

HEFA (Higher Education Field Academy) Following test pit excavations in Rampton back in July, students took the summer to write an archaeological report of their findings. These reports have now been marked and graded at an undergraduate level and all of our students will be receiving detailed assessments of their reports and performance.

Student Medical Appointments

Feedback from the University of Cambridge will provide students with a clearer idea of exactly what they have achieved, and will enable them to develop new learning aims whilst preparing CV’s and personal statements as they look towards higher education.

Please may we request that student medical appointments are made for either first thing in the school day, or late afternoon to try and avoid missing valuable learning time.

The HEFA team was impressed by their effort, achievement and attitude, noting that each student clearly has the potential to do well in higher education, which we all hope they will capitalize on in the future.

Please also ensure that College has been notified in advance of appointments as well as a note in your child’s Planner.

Our students did remarkably well and we congratulate them on their hard work.

We realise that it’s not always possible to pick and choose time slots but, wherever you can, will really help.

Certificates will be awarded to: Bethia Fisher, Boe Ambrose, Cerys Lindsay, Charlotte Causton, Daniel Chucherko, Ellie Staines, George Coulson, Mollie Howarth, Neve Armstrong, Nicola Emery, Ryan Cox, Tabitha Butler and Ellen Olley. Mrs K Vella

The Brilliant Club A selection of Year 8 students are taking part in a scholars programme known as ‘The Brilliant Club’. The club is designed to challenge and motivate students at levels above their key stage, it also inspires students to consider the top 30 Universities in the country as a reality for them and helps equip them with the skills necessary.

Charity Support Don’t forget our first charity event will be held this Friday 18th November 2016. This will take the format of a non-uniform day. Each student is asked to donate £1.00 or more. Proceeds will be split 1/3 to Children in Need, 1/3 towards the Kenya trip fundraising appeal and 1/3 towards Student Council local charities.

They had the most amazing day at the launch on Thursday 3rd November hosted by Catherine College, Cambridge University. They got to meet, and had a study session with, their PhD tutor from Cambridge University, and communicated with her confidently and with ease. They also participated in an amazing debate where they had to prepare ‘elevator’ pitches about one thing that they would like to change about their school. This wasn’t easy as they were challenged every step of the way. The change in their confidence was evident from the start to the end of the day and they are now engaged and fired-up to complete their assignments.

If you, or your child, would like more information, please contact your House office.

We look forward to celebrating their successful completion of the programme in January 2017. Mrs T Batchford _______________________________________________________

Welcome to the Etheldreda House Page Congratulations on a great start to the term for Etheldreda House. The standard of uniform and behavior has, on the whole, been exemplary. A reminder that uniform expectations can be found on the school website but please ask if you are unsure. Students are adapting well to life in the House system. Many have been involved in inter-House sports already. Etheldreda boys are currently ranked 1st. I would like to ask parents and carers to encourage students to compete in these events. Not only is it good for the health it is also an excellent way to build up PLEDGES. The PLEDGE system is now being launched and I would encourage students to get involved in session 6 activities. A reminder that activities out of school will also contribute to the PLEDGE system so please bring in certificates or proof of participation to tutors. Thank you to everyone in form E-NHU who worked hard to donate and fill shoeboxes for the Samaritan’s Christmas shoebox appeal. A group of students proudly delivered the boxes on Monday to the Charity collection point in Ely. Once again, congratulations to the students for such a positive start to the school year.

Welcome to the Franklin House Page I’m very proud of how the Franklin students have settled into their new House and College routines, they have shown maturity and positivity in adapting to the vertical tutoring system. A special mention must go to those Franklin students who took part in the recent inter-House sport competitions, including cross country, netball and rugby, particularly the boys who helped put Franklin into second position. Keep it up! We would like to thank the Franklin student helpers who did a sterling job representing Ely College during the Year 6 Open Evening. They were fantastic ambassadors for Ely College; Year 6 parents could not praise their wonderful attitudes and helpfulness enough. The numbers of Year 6 families who have chosen Ely College as their first choice for September 2017 is pleasing. The Open Evening would have played a big part in their decision-making process, so your help and support on the evening was really important and appreciated. We’d like to mention a couple of individual students too, namely Jake and Lauren Challenger who continue to achieve swimming successes outside of School on top of being conscientious and hardworking students in School. We’re always pleased to hear from students and parents about the wide range of activities we know happen outside of School. With the new PLEDGES scheme up and running I hope to be hearing more about the individual talents and hobbies of all our students. It’s not just our Year 11’s who are aiming high though, Harvey Caley in Year 7 was invited to perform a song he’d written at the House of Lords as part of a project, you may have read about this as it was featured in the local press recently. Very proud to have you in Franklin House, Harvey! One final note, we are delighted with the Franklin House attendance figures, which currently show attendance at 96.1%, which is slightly higher than the other three Houses. Attendance really does matter: if you are in school, you are learning and achieving! Mrs S Kay Assistant Principal – Franklin [email protected]

Welcome to the Scott House Page Scott House students have settled in well to the new vertical tutoring system. I would like to thank them for their enthusiasm and also the tutors for their hard work and endeavour. I would like to make a special thanks to Ms N Pritchett for supporting students in Scott House with real dedication. Our Year 10 students are currently participating in some educational research about the impact of sleep patterns on learning, all students in Scott House will be partaking in the sleep pattern diary, so expect a few conversations about the importance of sleep over the coming weeks! Our House ran a competition to see who would design the mural for Scott House earlier this term. The chosen finalists to go forward and be judged for this competition are: Cerys Seager, Evie Purcell, Serena Noon and Tasha Gill. Scott House students will have a greater voice under the new Student Ambassador programme led by Mrs S Goodey. Our chosen ambassador for Year 10 is Archie Edwards. Scott students have recently been given their new PLEDGES book and tutors are busy explaining how this will work for them and the huge range of extra-curricular offerings in the session 6 subjects. I would like to thank the large number of students who were involved in our recent open evenings, they were a real credit to their House and the College. We have a number of sports leaders and captains and we will be competing with other Houses in Inter-House competitions. If your child is interested in taking part, please encourage them to come to the House office and we’ll put names on our board. Dr KJ Norton-Berry Assistant Principal – Scott House [email protected]

Welcome to the Turing House Page Students in Turing House have settled well into their vertical tutor groups. It has already meant that tutors have more opportunity to have conversations regarding achievement and targets. Pupils have reported they feel that tutor time is much more productive. Potential sports leaders have applied to be sports captains for the House and will, no doubt, be working hard to ensure that Turing takes an active part in the inter-House competitions this year. Announcements regarding the successful captains and vice-captains will be made this week in assembly. The Student Council is being re-launched to reflect the new school structure. Leaders are being sought from Year 10, so students who see themselves as advocates, as leaders and as motivators should ensure that a written application is submitted as soon as possible. This is the students’ opportunity to shape the way the College moves forward. Congratulations to Tyler Vince who has been successful in his Black Belt grading. An opportunity for Turing students to take part in an activity weekend in France will be announced this week.
