New one-way system during drop-off and pickup times We want to ease the traffic congestion outside the secondary school during drop-off and pickup times. We have considered your feedback and will trial a one-way system from Monday 31st October 2016. Here is how it will work: • Please access the secondary school through Olawale Cole Onitiri Avenue, instead of Christ Avenue. Olawale Cole Onitiri Avenue is the turning on the right before Christ Avenue (if you are coming from Tantalizers/Admiralty Way). • Exit the secondary school area through Christ Avenue. • Please refer to the road signs and map below for directions.

Football competition (Saturday 15th October 2016) Our team of agile footballers put up a brilliant performance on Saturday 15th October 2016 at the AISEN football competition. The Edgewood College team was victorious over Meadow Hall School (2-1) and Corona School (1-0). Our players qualified for the semifinal match. They took third or fourth place in the national soccer competition. There was no third place match, though our players were ready and able to clinch the third place position. We have many reasons to be grateful to God at Edgewood College.

The talented volleyball team Today, Saturday 22nd October 2016, was a great day for our volleyball team. Our team emerged the triumphant winner over Dowen College in three friendly volleyball matches – male, female and mixed. We saw great teamwork, determination and physical fitness during the matches. To God be all the glory.

Personal target percentage Please look out for a letter regarding your child’s personal target percentage. The letter was sent home on Friday 21st October 2016. All students in Years 7 to 10 have been set personal target percentages. Our academic team recently examined the past performance and academic potential of all our students. At the meeting, we set a personal target percentage for each student. We expect the personal target percentages to raise our students’ aspirations and attainments. Please remind your child of the personal target percentage periodically. We look forward to improved scholarly attainments in the near future. Assessment Week 2 The next set of assessments will take place between Monday 7th and Friday 11th November 2016. The assessments (tests, quizzes, presentations etc) will form part of your child’s result for this term. Preparations should never be left until the week before the assessments. Black History Month As we join our British friends in celebrating Black History Month, we are reminded of the words of Nelson Mandela, a freedom fighter and South Africa’s first black head of state:

Edgewood Paparazzi The ‘Edgewood College paparazzi’ captured some interesting images and would like to share them with you.

Top: The picture of two Year 10 students working collaboratively during a physics lesson. They carried out some scientific tests, recorded their observations and analysed the results together. The moral of the story: we are stronger together Bottom: The picture of a student’s locker. The locker was well decorated and neatly organised. She took pride in her personal space and devoted time and attention to it. The moral of the story: we should take pride in our culture and heritage

Guy Fawkes Day/Bonfire Night: a brief history lesson

Catholic dissident, Guy Fawkes, and 12 co-conspirators spent months planning to blow up King James I of England during the opening of Parliament on November 5, 1605. But their assassination attempt was foiled the night before when Fawkes was discovered lurking in a cellar below the House of Lords next to 36 barrels of gunpowder. Londoners immediately began lighting bonfires in celebration that the plot had failed, and a few months later Parliament declared November 5 a public day of thanksgiving. Guy Fawkes Day, also known as Bonfire Night, has been around in one form or another ever since. Though originally anti-Catholic in tone, in recent times it has served mainly as an excuse to watch fireworks, make bonfires, drink mulled wine and burn Guy Fawkes effigies. Jesse Greenspan/History Channel 2012, Guy Fawkes Day: A Brief History. Available from: http://www.history.com/news/guy-fawkesday-a-brief-history. [18 October 2016] Mini Bonfire Night (5pm to 6pm on Saturday 5th November 2016) We will have a Mini Bonfire Night on Saturday 5th November 2016. It will start at 5pm and end by 6pm. Through the bonfire, we will bring the story of the gunpowder plot to life, improve students’ awareness of international events, and stir up their interest in history.
