CHA PTE R # 12 38

We kicked off our first Chapter meeting of 2008 and had a good crowd to start the year. It was a drizzling start to a new year, but the temperatures kept climbing through the weekend, as did the rumble of Harley’s as many bikers took advantage o f the unseasonably warm weather. First on the morning’s agenda were two very special guests; Cody and Bruce Guerns ey made a surprise and welcome app earance. You may remember that it was almost a year ago that Cody attended our chapter meeting and presented his Eagle Scout project to erect a veteran’s memorial at Old Union cemetery in Boone County. The chapter quickly moved to give Cody a check and then passed the hat around the room for additional personal contributions. In the end, the result was well over $1000 that morning to Cody’s project. A few short months later, on Memorial Day, several of us attended the dedication o f the veteran’s memorial. Never have I been so proud to wear our ch apter’s colors as I was that day. And of course, we are all proud of Cody. To say thanks, Cody presented a plaque o f appreciation to our H.O.G. chapter for the contribution of funds and support. Turning to chapter business, I have been working with Sherri to explore the purchase of a PA system to be used at chapter meetings and activities at the dealership. Neither the chapter nor the dealership have ev er owned a PA system; when we have used one in the past it is because we hav e borrowed or rent ed it. As our meetings and activities have grown to significant size, it has become increasingly difficult fo r everyon e to hear and to be heard. I have reviewed options with local retailers and hav e priced systems ranging from $800 to $1200. A motion was made and passed to proceed with the purchase o f a PA system using best judgment to meet our needs. I appreciate everyon e who offered assistance and support fo r this effo rt. We are also exploring options for having our chapter meetings interpreted for the deaf and hearing impaired. While exact numbers are not available, we are aware o f a larg e number of deaf and hearing impaired members and potential members in our community that are avid Harley bikers. I readily admit my ignorance of the challeng es faced by our deaf friends, what it means to master the American Sign Language, or how we would go about providing these services; so far, the learning curve is steep but encouraging. At this time, we are currently looking into interpretation services and the possible funding requirements. I will provide additional updates as more information develops. I appreciate the very positive response that I have already receiv ed from across our membership body in support of these effo rts. Again, I am optimistic for the New Year, the upcoming riding season, and the chapter as a whole. Charlie Burke has been busy mapping an activity calendar for the upcoming year. Look for more details later in this issue. We are also encouraging anyone who has a suggestion for a ride or would like to lead a ride to let Charlie know and we can post it on the schedule. Stay dry and warm and I look forward to seeing you at the February meeting! Ken L. White

Dear HOG M embers: Greetings from Baghdad, 7 January 2008, been gone 39 days now and in-country 36 days. I am receiving email from everyone and turning them around as quickly as possible. As usual for government service, what they told me at the finance center doesn’t match what I found when I got on the ground here. Which I half expected prior to my arrival. But that’s another story not to be put in writing. I am in a routine now and have found that the most scarce resource in Iraq is hot water. It is highly prized and can be hard to come by. I would say my first really hot shower was had on Christmas Day at the Fitness Center. And only because we had a late reporting time and I got in early. I will say as a way of background, when 4 people share a trailer and there is only a 15 gallon hot water heater, then one person gets a hot shower and the rest get cold. I had not shaved with cold water in years. Now that’s an experience. On Friday, 4 Jan 08, the 3 huge boxes you all sent arrived here. I could not believe what a large variet y of items that were sent. Nor how appreciated they were not only by the troops here in the M ulti-National Forces Group (one box), but by our local M arines detachment and by members of the Stryker Forces (two boxes) at FOB Prosperity. The various items have been disbursed all over the International Zone. As an example, there was a self-contained case of 10 games that were delivered to the Day Room at FOB Blackhawk which is one of the living areas here. The magazines and game books were delivered to the library at The Palace in the US Embassy compound, where I live and after I read them. The biggest hit of all the boxes was the Soap of various kinds. The main PX/BX here has been out of soap for two weeks and everyone was running low. Convoys have been experiencing problems in delivery. Again I want to thank each and every one of you for your generosity in sending a little part of home to not only myself, but to all the soldiers, sailors, marines and air force members that have also benefited from it. Nothing will go to waste and all is greatly appreciated. And again, thank you. The days aren’t bad here for me. I work 5 days @12 hours each and 2 days @ 6 hours. The rest of time is traveling to and from work; I walk the two miles from the Embassy to the Phoenix Base for exercise, while smoking a cigar. Then there is laundry and sleeping. That’s it. No sight-seeing here. The local can get a little mischievous at times. Well that’s about all the news from here. But will have a lot of stories when I return. M ore later, Dave Bridges, 39 of 182, these are some photos sent by Dave.

Coming in February… Our friends from Rolling Thunder, Chapter No. 1, will be our guest speakers at our February HOG Chapter No. 1 Meeting. We will be treated to a presentation of Rolling Thunder’s mission and an overview of the 2008 Ride to the Wall. If you hav enever been to “The Wall” with Rolling Thunder on Memorial Day weekend, you owe it to yourself to make this journey. Everyone is being encouraged to make the tri p; if you like, join us as we assemble a group from our Chapter to ri de as guests of Rolling Thunder. This meeting will provi de additional details into this event...don’t miss it! Ken L. White H: 317-877-2195/C: 317-445-7705 V O L U M E 21, ISS U E 1

Our Wall of Heroes: You may recall from the Christmas Party that everyone was requested to bring a picture of a loved one or friend that is serving in the Armed Forces. The photos were then hung on the Christmas Tree at the dealership. The holidays are now behind us, and as the Christmas tree has come down, the pictures have been moved to the Chapter Bulletin Board near the service doors. Of course, you are free to retrieve your picture if you would like; however, if you have a picture of a friend or a loved one that is in the service and you would like to add it to our collection, we encourage you to do so. It is important that we never forget the commitment and the sacrifice that our men and women in the service make to keep this Country strong. V O L U ME 2 1 , IS S UE 1
