ABB to Provide AC Power Cable System for Offshore Wind Farm Connection in Europe

Zurich, Switzerland-based ABB, a leading power and automation technology group, has won a significant order from the Dutch-German transmission grid operator, TenneT, to design, engineer, supply and install an AC power transmission cable system that will connect the AC platform of the Butendiek offshore wind farm to the HVDC converter platform SylWin alpha. The Butendiek wind farm is situated around 30 km off the island of Sylt. The cable system to be supplied is a three-core 155 kV AC submarine cable, around 38 km long. It is scheduled to be installed and commissioned in 2015. The high-voltage cable originally destined for this project was lost in an incident in the Mediterranean Sea in July 2014, and ABB was requested to step in and help to support the project schedule. The cable system will have a capacity to transmit 144 MW of wind power—enough to meet the electricity needs of approximately 150,000 German households. The use of clean, renewable wind energy as an alternate source is equivalent to the abatement of almost 750,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year that could have resulted from fossil fueled generation. ABB has successfully commissioned more than 10 AC cable projects around the world for offshore wind projects, and others are under execution. Butendiek is the sixth offshore wind connection project in Germany awarded to ABB by TenneT. www.abb.com

Southwire, Carrollton, GA, USA, is expanding building wire and feeder MC cable manufacturing capacity by renovating an existing 650,000 ft2 facility on 111 acres in Carrollton. This additional facility will enable Southwire to dramatically increase capacity, while streamlining operations to support residential and commercial construction growth to meet future customer demand for building wire and feeder MC cable products. Production has already begun at the new plant and additional equipment will be added over the coming months, making it one of the most efficient and up-to-date wire and cable manufacturing facilities in operation today. Once complete, Southwire will produce several key product lines using updated equipment and manufacturing techniques. “This new facility delivers a number of manufacturing benefits and the property allows for further expansion as needed,” said Phil Tuggle, SVP Building Wire, Southwire. “Copper wire will continue to be our largest building wire category, but the market is continually demanding value-engineered alternatives to copper. So not only will we get increased capacity, but we’ll do it with an extremely efficient footprint with room for future growth.” According to Southwire, as contractors search for ways to improve safety, increase productivity and reduce costs on the job site, they will look for more cost-effective material options and greater overall value from product solutions that help them add to their bottom line. www.southwire.com

Korea energizes HVDC superconductor cable Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), LS Cable System and AMSC, recently announced that a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) high-temperature superconductor (HTS) cable has been energized on Jeju Island’s smart grid demonstration site. The 500 m, 80 kV DC cable is powered by AMSC’s Amperium® HTS wire and installed in KEPCO’s electricity grid. HVDC HTS cables are power dense and have zero resistance, making them an ideal solution to moving large amounts of power underground and with a minimal footprint. Capable of conducting 150 times the amount of electricity that can be conducted by copper or aluminum devices of the same size, HVDC HTS cables also benefit from no electrical losses, making them a very good conductor of electricity.

Designs exist for future cables that AMSC anticipates will be capable of moving up to 10 GW of power within an 8 m right-of-way. A similar overhead circuit would require multiple extremely highvoltage circuits and around 120 m right-of-way. “We believe Korea is the earliest country in the world to adopt smart and clean energy such as smart grid, Energy Storage System (ESS) and micro grid. The energizing of the first direct-current, high-temperature superconductor cable in a real grid demonstrates KEPCO’s commitment to developing worldclass, leading-edge technologies,” said Hwan-Eik Cho, President and CEO, KEPCO. “We expect to continue to develop superconductor cable projects with the objective of being the foremost utility in superconductor-enabled solutions.” “With the energizing of the HVDC cable at Jeju Island, KEPCO and

Notebook LEONI Develops New Charging Cable Concept LEONI AG, Nürmberg, Germany, has developed a new charging cable concept involving a statusindicating light function. Not only does the new cable make charging easier for the user, it also provides greater safety. The iEVC, which features enhanced functions, visibly tracks the progress of charging a vehicle with color change in the cable jacket. By having this illumination unit integrated along the charging cable, the driver can see the charge status of his or her electric car or plugin hybrid even from a greater distance and without the need to use any additional devices.

Furthermore, optical signals provide such additional information as a trouble-free connection or malfunction. The consistent illumination of the cable across its entire length also averts the threat of tripping over the cable in dark or poorly lit areas. The cable can display any color and is continuously dimmable. www.leoni.com
