Greetings from the Department I hope you are all having a great summer. Just like it is for you, summer is our busiest season. There are lots of new patients coming to visit us, the second year residents just graduated, we have the incoming first year residents who have been intensively learning all they can to get started as orthodontists and they had their first day treating patients already. In addition, each second year resident just inherited over 100 patients in treatment and they can begin to countdown to when they too will be facing graduation and deciding where they will be going to practice. New applications are already pouring into the office from candidates who want to be invited to interview to become part of the Class of 2019. It can be overwhelming at times and any little bump we face can become a major disruption. We survive by everyone pitching in and doing their part to make the whole enterprise run as smoothly as possible. The part-time volunteer faculty that we have are amazing in their dedication to keeping the VCU orthodontic program in top shape. The staff work together with the residents to make our patients happy, and the full-time faculty try to coordinate the entire effort. Definitely a small miracle when it proceeds seamlessly and blends effortlessly with our other personal passions and professional commitments. Speaking of which, we will be having our annual department retreat at King’s Dominion in just a few weeks! I hope you enjoy this installment of the VCU Orthodontic Newsletter, put together by Danielle Easterly who is now a second year resident. Please send me any comments, suggestions or questions at [email protected].

VCU Resident Outreach – Giving back in St. Lucia This spring, the second year residents were given the unique opportunity to travel to St. Lucia and deliver orthodontic care to an underserved community. There are very few orthodontists in St. Lucia, and patients drive from all over the island, sometimes waiting in line for hours, to be treated at this clinic. Dr. Pamela Regimbal, our own part-time faculty, was instrumental in organizing and gaining support for this trip. Over the course of a week, the residents treated dozens of patients, and also helped with improving the clinical site, writing out much-needed protocols for sterilization and radiography.

Alumni News

(Top right) We are excited for the arrival of second year resident David Lindsey’s first child with his wife Misha, due September 1st. (Bottom right) Best wishes and congratulations to our new business manager, Jennifer Rohland, and her husband, on the expected birth of their first child this fall.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go! At the end of this summer, our loved Team 3 assistant of more than a decade, Cecilia Moncure, will be moving onward into a new position within the dental school. While we will miss her greatly in the ortho department, we are excited for Cecilia and her future career in the administrative department. Cecilia has brought a warm and fun energy to the treatment of hundreds of patients, and was a great teacher and mentor to the many residents she has worked with over her years with the program.

Celebrating the Graduates of 2016

VCU Ortho Goes Even More Digital! Thanks to a generous donation by an alumnus, in July the residency program finally received our highly anticipated new iTero Element® intraoral scanner. This new technology has already allowed us to take more efficient, accurate models, and improve our patient care experience. As intraoral scanners are becoming increasingly more common in private practice, the residents feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to hone their skills and experience with this equipment. Class of 2017’s Trip to Italy Over the past few years, our residents have been fortunate enough to travel to the orthodontic clinic in Messina, Sicily to learn about the different approaches to treatment abroad and to give lectures on various topics.

AAO 2016 – Orlando For this year’s AAO meeting, our very own Dr. Lindauer and Dr. Shroff were members of the scientific planning committee. They did a wonderful job with a very successful line-up of speakers. The VCU turnout at the meeting and alumni reception was fantastic!
