T4 CONGRATULATIONS TO SHIRLEY PRATT We are very proud of our truly deserving workmate Shirley Pratt, who was presented with the ‘Southland Kiwibank Local Hero’ medal at the ‘New Zealander of the Year’ awards. Shirley is a selfless and humble member of our REAP team, who has been instrumental in the success of Southern REAP’s Young Mums/NCEA4U programme. This programme enables second chance learners to work towards achieving NCEA credits through Te Kura correspondence school. Shirley has created a learning xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx environment that is a safe haven for the learners. Shirley has a way of making all learners feel valued and welcome. She quietly encourages every learner to be the best that they can be. She promotes self-confidence and helps her students to find their place in the world. We are very lucky to have her on our wonderful team.

SEASONS GREETINGS FROM WINTON 2016 has been another year of great community happenings across rural Southland. As is always the case there have been many highlights including the NCEA 4 U programme that is running in Gore, Winton and Nightcaps. Southern REAP feels privileged to be able to work alongside these students and support them as they re-engage in learning to achieve their NCEA levels. During the year I have heard of many examples of the impact these programmes are having on individual students. Particuarly the increase in confidence, ability to share their stories through speeches, developing into class role models, and finding a sense of belonging and the success of sitting external exams.

As a team we are always reflecting on if our work is ‘making a difference’ … the NCEA 4 U is certainly a programme that is achieving this in many ways. Once again we are grateful to all our communities for your on-going support to ensure the very best for the learners we work with. Whether it be the community worker supporting the locals at classes, funding support from organisations such as the Community Trust of Southland, or schools hosting initiatives – all this compliments the work we do in our rural areas and is very much appreciated. On behalf of the Southern REAP team, I wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and great new learnings in 2017. Dawn Brocks Manager [email protected]

See you in 2017.

“If you go down to the woods today.....” Teddy Bears Picnic at Winton Open Day. Working in partnership with Central Southland Plunket it is great to be out and about and involved in local events that aspires to bring families and the local community together.

WHAT’S ON?

Check out the back pages of this newsletter for upcoming classes in 2017 around Southland!

We presented some physical apparatus and heuristic resources into the environment, creating a play space for children and adults too! The highlight of Winton’s Open Day for the young children is of course the Teddy Bears Picnic. Following the welcome it was time to go in search for our big furry friend Ted

NCEA 4 U - WINTON, GORE, NIGHTCAPS It takes courage to try again! It takes courage to study, to send in work to Te Kura Correspondence School for internal credits, to sit external exams. It takes courage to join a class where you might not know the people. It takes courage to leave your preschool children in a childcare while you study. It takes courage and perseverance to learn new schools. In Winton and Nightcaps there have been great groups of Mums taking part in second chance learning through NCEA 4U classes. They have shown such tremendous courage as they have studied this year.

Because we were all so happy that Ted E. Bear was found, the song “If you’re happy and you know it” lead us into the music and movement session.

The children were singing Christmas carols accompanied with bells when the Jolly man in the red suit dropped in on the proceedings to spread his joy. With hugs and waves the children bid farewell to Ted E. Bear and Santa Claus, drawing the festivities to a close.

CONGRATULAT IONS!

who has gained his Level 1 NCEA.. nice work!

Hooray!!!

Kat did a brilliant job (alongside compere Gerry Forde) facilitating this as the children gathered round so eager to take part, demonstrating their dance moves to some well-known and favourite songs.

Venturing through the woods in anticipation the children found Bear.

We are delighted with the credits that have been gained in subjects like Accounting, Digital Technology, English, Technology, and Agriculture. We are delighted with the friendships that have been made and the support for each other as parents and

caregivers. We’ve loved watching the children grow in confidence and independence over the year in the care of Darylann and Nikki. There are a few places left in classes in both Winton and Nightcaps for 2017. If you are interested in working towards NCEA give Janine at Southern REAP a call phone 03 236 6008.

We wish you all a Happy and safe festive season! From the Early Childhood Team.

COMPUTERS IN HOMES SOUTHLAND Computers in Homes provides training, technical support, refurbished computers and home Internet to students’ families in low-decile schools – so they can join the online world. By doing this we increase students’ educational attainment. We strengthen links between families and schools & helps parents get more involved in children’s learning. We have had a very successful Term 4, with 25 families graduating in 3 different areas of Southland - Gore, Winton, and Invercargill. They were all very enthusiastic learners, who gained an abundance of knowledge to take out into the world. The graduations were celebrated with food and drink for all to enjoy. Thank you to all the families for your hard work and dedication.

LOOK AT US GO!

What interesting people we have in Southland! Student learning has been extended and enriched in a wide variety of areas under the GATE programmes of Central and Western Southland. A total of 44 students met with biochemist Dr Sue Galloway and had fun dipping in to biochemistry, genetics, physics and ecology. Among other things students extracted DNA from kiwifruit, bananas and onions, made torches, mated dragons and investigating habitat and camouflage techniques. Fascinating! Almost 110 students from Year 1 up to Year 6 met in groups with talented Southland artist Karen Pringle for art classes where they sketched and painted art in nature. It was great to see the level of learning and application of techniques as students painted native flora and fauna. Their artworks were impressive!

T4 2016

This year our Junior Thinkers have used iPads apps “PuppetPals” and “Explain Everything” as they have created stories and explanations after learning using Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats. They are so creative! Leadership @ Adventure Southland was the final initiative on offer in 2016, preparing students who are likely to hold leadership positions in their schools and communities in 2017. Students realised the importance of teamwork, taking a risk, communicating, supporting and encouraging. Our country is in good hands with such cooperative young people!
