Warm Welcome for 2012! New Years at the Half Moon Bay Yacht Club found a local band, the Califuegos, warming up the Big Room as people enjoyed a bountiful potluck. Joanne, our new bartender, made a wonderful roasted vegetable platter, with her special “aoli” sauce, for the Old Clubhouse. She also brought decorations that Eric Hassler and his buddies put up to add to the festive affair. Welcome Joanne! For their second set, the Califuegos got everyone out of their seats and onto the dance floor. Before their last set they came into the Old Clubhouse and played several songs “a cappella” drawing people back to the Big Room for the final minutes of 2011. Kids played games and enjoyed the fire pit and the endless stream of food. Special thanks to Liz Allison who pitched in with dishes, and Bill Klear who kept things in order generally, Kristi Durazo for setting up the bar, and Judy McCarthy for managing the front door donations. Already planning something for next New Years… Happy New Year! Michelle Dragony

“TOE THE LINE,SAILOR” SAY WHAT?

Honor Bar Hosts: The holiday's were a time of great fun and festivities, both scheduled and unscheduled at the club. As you know, anyone trained as a Watch Officer has the ability to open an honor bar to entertain guests (appropriately signed in) at their discretion. Just a reminder that you do need to complete the honor bar envelope with your name, amount of the bar revenues and THE DATE AND TIME you submit the envelope. Also, please acknowledge that all cabinets have been secured prior to leaving the club. If you notice that we are running low on any items, especially keg beer, please send me an email ,so we can rereorder before the weekend. Also, don't leave any unsecured beverages unattended, even for a quick walk on the beach. Happy New Year to everyone .

Remember Mom saying: “YOU BETTER TOE THE LINE OR YOU’RE IN BIG TROUBLE!’’ And you said: “Yes M’am.” Remember? Ever wonder where that phrase came from? From pulling a rope? Dragging a barge through the Erie Canal? Wanna know? Well, first off we need to review a few nautical bits of trivia. On a wooden ship between each pair of deck planks is some stuff called “oakum” and it is sealed with a mixture of pitch and tar. When admired from afar, it looks like there are a series of parallel lines running the length of the deck. Sailors being a cheap as well as a poorly paid group very rarely wore shoes. Now you can see where I’m going with this. Every Sunday, most ship’s crews would muster for church, floggings, pay, Captain’s Mast, etc. and it was necessary that they all line up in good order. Sooooooooooooo “Toe the line Sailor!” But before you go off half cocked (more about that later), there is one more aspect that your Mother would appreciate Ship’s boys and young midshipmen/student officers would often time screw up (Sound familiar?). The Captain would gain great pleasure from forcing the miscreant to stand for hours with his toes on a specific line. “Don’t move, don’t blink, don’t even breath. TOE THAT LINE.” OK, all you parents. There’s a can of black paint and a brush in the shed. Feel free to do a bit of painting back at the house.
