LETTER FROM OUR LEADERSHIP Dear Friends, As the President of the Board of Directors and Executive Director of Pikes Peak Community Foundation, our job is to envision the future we want to create in our community. But we also believe it essential to stop every so often and celebrate all we’re accomplishing right now. As we reflect on a year of unprecedented success in 2012, we feel nothing more than gratitude that our resources and community partnerships enabled us to invest almost $4 million in the Pikes Peak region this year, practicing thoughtful philanthropy for lasting impact. Our actions, and results, provide proof positive that people’s quality of life improves when they become involved with Pikes Peak Community Foundation. We consider it an honor to serve our community’s philanthropists, nonprofits, and innovators through our donor-advised funds, grant programs, and fiscal sponsor funds, to name a few. We take immense pride in the achievements of the countless people working to improve the quality of life for everyone who lives here. The work of philanthropy, and the daily effort to make people’s lives better, truly entails the journey of a thousand miles; we feel constantly thankful to travel this road in such good company. We do not quite act like a normal community foundation, largely due to our impact initiatives. Venetucci Farm provides locally-grown produce; free-range, antibiotic and hormone-free meat and eggs; and vital education connecting people of all ages with the source of their food. Aspen Valley Ranch offers arts and cultural activities, and education in sustainable living skills like cordwood building, fire mitigation, and high-altitude gardening. Other innovative projects also focus on wellness in a variety of ways, and you can read about them in these pages. One common thread runs throughout our programs and services, regardless of their varied approaches to outreach: a focus on making your life better, as a member of our community. COMMUNITY SERVICES

COLORADO SPRINGS DIVERSITY FORUM:

Pikes Peak Community Foundation’s Fiscal Sponsorship program empowers community groups to take action and make change without the administrative burdens of running an independent 501(c)3. PPCF provides liability insurance, pays bills, administers grants, and acknowledges donor contributions, allowing our projects to focus on fulfilling their missions.

In 2012, the City of Colorado Springs selected PPCF’s Colorado Springs Diversity Forum Fund as the host of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of our Sister City relationship with Fujiyoshida, Japan. Since its creation in 2006, the Colorado Springs Diversity Forum has impacted the lives of more than 22,000 Colorado Springs residents through its cultural programs, diversity dialogues, and annual Everybody Welcome Celebration.

FISCAL SPONSORSHIP

SK8-STRONG Fifteen-year-old, X-Games Skateboarding bronze medalist, and Colorado Springs resident Jono Schwan approached Pikes Peak Community Foundation in the spring of 2012 with one goal: to create an organization to support amateur skateboarders in Colorado Springs. Since then, the Sk8-Strong fund built Colorado’s only vert ramp in the Springs’ Memorial Park, hosted Colorado’s first World Cup Skateboarding event, and helped three local skateboarders get onto World Cup Skateboarding’s professional roster.

EL PASO COUNTY BAR FOUNDATION PPCF is the steward for the El Paso County Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the El Paso County Bar Association. The Foundation serves to promote the education, knowledge and awareness of the law, improve the administration of justice and the delivery of legal services, as well as assisting in providing legal services to those who are unable to afford them, and providing scholarships and grants consistent with these purposes. In 2012, the Pikes Peak Pro-Bono Project incorporated as its own 501(c)3. PPCF loves to see its projects grow wings and take flight!

TOWN OF GREEN MOUNTAIN FALLS FIRE RECOVERY FUND When arsonists burned Green Mountain Falls’ historic town hall to the ground, the town turned to its long-time partner, Pikes Peak Community Foundation, for help. PPCF worked with the City of Colorado Springs and the Friends of Green Mountain Falls to create the Fire Recovery Fund to help the town recover and rebuild.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

Being on the PPCF Grants Committee has provided me with a great opportunity to see first-hand the important work our Pikes Peak Area not-for-profit agencies are doing to make our community a better place to live. The energy, passion and enthusiasm expressed by staff and board members for their organizations' missions during our site visits inevitably results in lively discussions when it's time to try to decide how to best allocate our grant monies!

GRANT PROGRAMS

If the heart of the Pikes Peak Community Foundation is our donor services, our soul is our grant-making programs. Since the 1920s, when Pikes Peak Community Foundation was still the Colorado Springs Community Trust, the Community Grants program has been investing in projects that improve the quality of life in the Pikes Peak Region.

COMMUNITY GRANTS:



Our Community Grants fund civic improvement, community development, education, the environment, health, human services, and animal welfare. In 2012, we continued the legacy of the Community Grants program and gave $188,000 in grant funds to 38 nonprofits serving El Paso and Teller counties.



FUND FOR THE ARTS:



The Fund for the Arts focuses specifically on arts and culture, which are vital to our community’s ability to thrive. In 2012, fourteen arts and culture organizations received a total of $50,000 for general operating support, artist micro-grants, gallery exhibitions, educational programs, and theater and music performances.



INGENUITY GRANTS:



Our newest grants program kicked off in 2011 to support innovative and creative projects with significant potential to improve our community.



Focusing on food and community, economic strength, and arts, music, and cultural resources, Ingenuity Grants helped launch projects such as the Art on the Run, Better Block Pikes Peak, and Bending toward the Light. In 2012, six projects received Ingenuity funding, for a total of $23,250.



ERIKSON FUND:



The Gerald Erikson Fund supports projects that positively impact Colorado’s blind and visually-impaired population. This year, the fund distributed $30,000 in grants to seven organizations that provide a range of services to blind and visually-impaired individuals.

WALDO CANYON FIREFIGHTERS FUND

Most notably in 2012, the Waldo Canyon Firefighters Fund (WCFF) touched many lives. Initiated the day after the fire began, the fund quickly grew as community members and businesses made donations and held impromptu fundraisers. The WCFF addressed a fund of the Pikes Peak Community Foundation immediate needs during the fire, and continues to fund intermediate and long-term fire recovery and mitigation.

EDITH ELLYAS A LEGACY FOR THE ARTS Edith Ellyas lived a modest life, but left a remarkable legacy. Born in 1923, Edith escaped from Germany after her husband’s death during World War II. She fled to Poland with her infant daughter, who fell ill. Edith took her to the hospital, which burned down that night; many children died. Believing her daughter to be among the casualties, Edith left Poland for America and eventually settled in Colorado Springs. Twenty years later, she found out her daughter still lived, and had been raised by a foster family in Germany. The two were reunited. In her will, Edith left her property to Pikes Peak Community Foundation to establish a fund supporting the arts. Although she lived simply, her estate gift allowed PPCF to create the Fund for the Arts, which distributes approximately $50,000 annually to local arts organizations.

We have believed in the importance of giving back to the community of Colorado Springs for many decades, and taught our children and their children of that importance as well. It is essential to create a legacy of giving, because that allows you to ensure that the future will always continue to improve. Bob McHugh

AFFILIATE FOUNDATIONS The Pikes Peak Community Foundation also provides back-office and administrative support for the Douglas County Community Foundation and the Greater South Fork Community Foundation. PPCF’s support allows these smaller communities to reap the benefits of a community foundation without the administrative burden. This year, the Douglas County Community Foundation’s fifteen funds raised $61,164.54 to support all aspects of life in Douglas County. One such project, Leadership Douglas County, connects professionals from all sectors and provides them with a series of leadership classes and community-building experiences. The Greater South Fork Community Foundation’s goals are simple: To identify community needs, create opportunities to enhance South Fork’s infrastructure, and bring together various Greater South Fork neighborhoods to discuss, learn, and interact. In 2012, the South Fork community gave 126 gifts and a total of $34,919.47 to the Greater South Fork Community Foundation’s seven funds.

PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS WALDO CANYON FIREFIGHTERS FUND The Pikes Peak Community Foundation established the Waldo Canyon Firefighters Fund the day after a wildfire started in a popular hiking area west of Colorado Springs. Although no one predicted the extent of the devastation, PPCF knew that the organizations on the front lines of the fire needed crucial support to protect the future of our community, and that, regardless of the size of the burn area, some restoration work would be needed. To date, donors from across the country have made 523 gifts, totaling $231,007.37, to the Waldo Canyon Firefighters Fund; the Fund has distributed 18 grants totaling $66,415 and continues to consider applications.

WALDO WALDO 5K RACE PPCF’s UpaDowna partnered with Colorado Springs-based costume company, elope, to host the Waldo Waldo 5K, a race to benefit the Waldo Canyon Firefighters Fund. More than 1,000 runners in red-and-white-striped “Where’s Waldo” shirts, and horn-rimmed glasses ran 3.2 miles through America The Beautiful Park to raise a total of $20,000 for Waldo Canyon relief and recovery.

SIGNS OF HOPE BOOK Woodmen Valley native Jake Martens and his PAGE 9 family evacuated their home in haste during the Waldo Canyon fire. When they returned home after the evacuation orders were lifted, the Martens felt inspired by the community’s determination to thank the emergency crews that had saved their homes. Over the next few weeks, Jake recruited his family, friends, and coworkers to document the “signs of hope” and combined those images into a book; the proceeds of which have raised nearly $50,000 for the Waldo Canyon Firefighters Fund.

PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS VENETUCCI FARM AND PINELLO RANCH The fields, staff, volunteers, and livestock at Venetucci Farm provide nourishment for the body, mind, and soul. Whether kids attend a summer program, adults enjoy a phenomenal farm-to-table Starlight Dinner, or people of all ages buy produce at the farmstand, the programs at Venetucci Farm provide fuel for a better life. Our outreach continues to grow, with 5,513 people attending classes, workshops, farm tours, and educational sessions in 2012. As in decades past, more than 10,000 people visited during the Pumpkins for Kids program to learn about growing healthy food in harmony with nature, and took home 6,000 pumpkins to celebrate the harvest season.

Pinello

ranch

While wildlife and birding refuge Pinello Ranch still has limited access, more and more people are getting involved with this incredible urban gem. Owned by Colorado Springs Utilities and operated by PPCF in symbiosis with Venetucci Farm, staff and volunteers at Pinello are building trails for non-intrusive bird and wildlife viewing, and developing programs to help protect the ranch’s natural resources. In 2012, 93 participants counted 147 species of birds at Pinello Ranch. This year we also formed a partnership with Cheyenne Mountain Zoo that raised $8,000 through Quarters for Conservation funding to support Pinello Ranch’s bird population, and provides volunteers to help with a new bird banding program.

ASPEN VALLEY RANCH In February 2007, Julie Snyder, honoring her father Gordon Jackson’s wishes, transferred ownership of his 300 acre ranch in Woodland Park to the Pikes Peak Community Foundation. Since then, PPCF has honored Gordon’s legacy by hosting sustainable living classes, collaborating with community groups to perform fire mitigation, and providing outdoor education and adventure events.

This year’s Mountain of the Sun Music Festival attracted nearly 1,000 attendees, and featured 12 bands on two different stages. Festival attendees also had the opportunity to take four different workshops taught by festival performers in the newly-completed yurt. Aspen Valley Ranch also hosts monthly house concerts onsite in its Raven Nest venue. About 1,900 music lovers attended the two outdoor and six indoor concerts offered at the ranch in 2012.

Among other community activities, Teller County Search and Rescue trained 80 people in survival exercises at the ranch in 2012. The ranch also features high-altitude greenhouses that provide community education and donated 380 pounds of food to provide nourishment for the needy, through our partnership with the Harvest Center. Aspen Valley Ranch also houses a traditional wood-fired kiln available to regional potters, and a sawmill where ranch staff milled more than 70 logs this year.

PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS UPADOWNA There’s never a dull moment with UpaDowna. The outdoor enthusiasts and educators hosted 165 events this year for more than 5,000 participants, including 12 movie nights, 17 downtown bike rides, 12 Sunday Adventure hikes, and 12 outdoor survival classes. UpaDowna members biked 13,600 street miles and 300 mountain miles, hiked 1,500 miles, summited five 14ers, and climbed 15,360 vertical feet of rock walls.

MOBILE MUSIC PROJECT The Mobile Music Project (MMP), launched in 2012, provides bicycle-powered concerts throughout the Pikes Peak region, with smoothies on the side. Audience members ride custom bikes to generate electricity for the musicians’ speakers and amps while the performers are playing. It’s sustainable, cultural, and mobile. The MMP quickly proved a popular choice for local music-lovers, playing numerous gigs in its debut year, as well as its accolade from the Colorado Springs Independent’s “Best Of” awards.

PIKES PEAK URBAN GARDENS Pikes Peak Urban Gardens (PPUG) continues to flourish, running 149 community garden plots at five local gardens, thanks to its dedicated staff, volunteers, and 103 participating gardeners. The PPUG staff and volunteers distributed hundreds of packets of seeds to gardeners in the community in 2012, and welcomed visitors to its demonstration gardens at Harlan Wolfe Ranch. Remarkably, the gardens at Harlan Wolfe produced 4,608 pounds of food from about two-thirds of an acre. PPUG also helped local communities and schools build seven other gardens throughout Colorado Springs, and has built 42-foot, solar-powered, geodesic dome greenhouses at Galileo Middle School and at Harrison Urban Gardens, located at the Harrison School District’s administration complex. PPUG hosted the second annual Garlic Fest this year, to the delight of its sell-out crowd. PPUG staff also taught numerous classes throughout the year attended by 1,500 community members of all ages, empowering people to grow their own healthy, delicious food.

FOGHINO FARM Foghino Farm connects the past, present and future. Located in Trinidad, the beautiful farm recently received recognition from the state of Colorado as a Centennial Farm, meaning that it has been in continuous operation for the past hundred years. The farm staff and volunteers believe in preserving the land for the future by using as few fossil fuels as possible and managing the farm in harmony with local ecology. They also pursue their production of food such as old-world meats and cheeses with dedication, investing the energy needed to create traditional foods using time-honored methods.

I started the Conservation Fund at Pikes Peak Community Foundation because conservation is close to my heart. The Conservation Fund not only funds local organizations, but also plays a convening role to bring organizations together to share ideas, resources and educate each other about their work. PPCF connects donors with these organizations to help them further their missions and achieve their goals. The Conservation Fund is a way for me to impact the community on a greater scale than would happen through a single donation.

The Pikes Peak Community Foundation, and the community as a whole, lost one of its greatest friends when Bob Small died in early 2012 at age 61. A native of Keene, NH, Bob served as the Associate Executive Director of the Pikes Peak Community Foundation from 2004. Bob’s dedicated, whole-hearted work played a key role in helping our organization become a leader in creating positive change in our community. He was unfailingly kind, and his loyalty, his compassion, and his thoughtful intelligence have taught us all a great deal about what is important in life.
