Foundation Investing $500,000 in Three Schools The Public Education Foundation, Inc. is making progress toward earning the second part of a two-year matching grant that has been awarded from the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County and The Garcia Family Foundation. The funds from the matching grant will be used to fund twenty specially trained reading tutors in Harrison, Hay, Madison and Wilson Primary Centers during the 20082009 school year. For every $12 received an hour of tutoring is provided for students. The Foundation board of directors is pleased to provide this strong reading support for over 1700 South Bend students. Your generous donations have made an impact on the lives of children in South Bend Schools as evidenced by the results seen at right.

Community Involvement “Basic” Education at New York University (NYU) spoke about the importance of community involvement to meet what he described as the “basic needs” of poor children so they experience success in school.

Dr. Pedro Noguera

Over 400 supporters were on hand for the annual “Great Friends of Schools” luncheon in April with keynote speaker Dr. Pedro Noguera. Board of directors member Tricia Sloma of WNDU served as the emancee for the event. Dr. Noguera from the Steinhardt School of

His research as director of the Center for Research on Urban Schools and Globalization kept the audience at the edge of their seats as he made suggestions for implementing change. In his recently published book, “The Trouble with Black Boys: And Other Reflections on Race, Equity, and the Future of Public Education,” Dr. Noguera examines “the many facets of race in schools and society and reveals what it will take to improve outcomes for all students.” The 25 books that were available were quickly snapped see Lunch, continued on page 2

We Want to Hear from You!

It is hard to believe that the board of directors is completing the fifth and final year of the current strategic plan. Thanks to the strong vision of the Foundation board of directors, four schools have experienced research driven reading support. I would like to give thanks to Lou LaPierre, Bob Laven, Tom Troeger and the previous board of directors for their leadership during the writing and implementation of the current plan. Speaking of Dr. Troeger, we welcomed Tom in January as the incoming president for 2008. Tom previously chaired the governance committee. One of his first duties, along with board of director and governance chair Brian Kubicki, is to oversee the writing of the next five-year strategic plan. In preparation for the plan, we need your input and participation. Please submit your answers to the ten question survey which can be found at our updated web site: www.edfo.org The Foundation continues to oversee a variety of grants established to provide ways for the community to support the efforts of students, teachers and faculty in every South Bend Public School. The photos on the following pages show the results of your donations at work to create a better future for South Bend’s students. Our Foundation and our schools depend on contributions to support academic excellence in South Bend’s schools. Thanks to you, we are helping to make sure that “Today’s Readers are Tomorrow’s Leaders!”

Congressman Donnelly Visits Reading Program

Foundation Welcomes New Board Directors and Officers

Directors. During a visit in May, Congressman Donnelly encouraged students at Hay Primary Center to “read, read, read.” He told students that he reads every day in his job and that he was reading on the plane as

he flew home. Donnelly congratulated the top reading students (see photos above) and visited with students who are working on their reading skills.

Rep. of US Secretary of Education Visits Hay During her visit she commented to the South Bend Tribune that she was about to cry as she observed the students learning to read. “To see that young boy and the light bulb go on, it was just very emotional for me,” she said. “That’s what makes us teachers come back year after year, day after day. It’s that wonderful of a moment.”

Khristine Cohen, who is regional representative for U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, stopped by Hay Primary on her visit to South Bend. She is the top-ranking U.S. education official for Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Hay Primary has made adequate yearly progress for four years in a row and has been named an exemplary school by the state ranking system. Hay uses the Wilson Language and Fundation programs that have been paid for by The Public Education Foundation and expanded into Harrison, Madison, and Wilson Primaries during the 2007-08 school year.

Principal’s Leadership Academy: Seven Principals and Growing The Foundation has now invested $25,000 for seven principals to attend professional development at the Principal’s Leadership Academy. Principal Wendy Folk, of Coquillard Primary, recently returned from a conference, “I returned yesterday from my first 3-day IPLA workshop in Nashville, Indiana.

I had a fantastic time of renewal and connection to colleagues from around the state.

Where in the World is Flat Stanley? The Project

he visited Ryan Matthys at RSM McGladrey, Tania Bengtsson of Gibson Insurance and Representative Bayh’s office. Sandy Hecklinski of Analog Digital showed Stanley how to make web sites. Fred Dean treated Stanley to a tour of Claeys Candy where Fred taught Stanley to share his candy with the kindergartners!

This school year, the Foundation board of directors participated in one of the teacher grants that was awarded to Mrs. Angela Blocher’s kindergarten classroom. The “Flat Stanley” project was started in 1995 by Dale Hubert, a third grade schoolteacher in London, Ontario, Canada, who created the character in an effort to subdue his son’s fears of going to bed. The project provides an opportunity for students to make connections with people all over the world by writing about their adventures with Flat Stanley. The teachers at Wilson Primary applied for the grant in order to “bring the world to our urbanized children who may never see the world outside their own backyards.” The following is an excerpt from the final grant report by Mrs. Blocher.

to the next with multi-colored yarn...We researched different parts of the world and even received, periodically, pictures from one world traveler so the students could visually attach themselves to his experiences. (He visited) the United Arab Emirates, Dubai, Spain, Portugal, Mexico and Canada …Upon his return, we welcomed him home with an open house celebration. We displayed all the pictures, journals, artifacts and souvenirs.”

Community Involvement

The Final Grant Report “Each classroom received two Flat Stanley figures. The first was to be mailed to a destination somewhere in the world and the recipient would expose him to an exciting adventure and send him forth to another location to accomplish the same goal. Each recipient recorded their experience in a journal and took pictures. Some even sent artifacts and souvenirs. Stanley began his travels in October and returned to Wilson in May. In addition to exposing our students to many states, countries and attractions world wide, we wanted to promote and encourage more writing and journaling with our students and their families…Our students were able to track each Flat Stanley as he journeyed around the world. We had a world map on the wall in our hallway that was covered from one end

Flat Stanley was busy with many Foundation Board of Directors during the year. Stanley started his journey with a visit to the executive committee where board member Carol Thon talked with him about how the Foundation helps students learn to read. Next stop was Laven Insurance, where he visited with Bob Laven and Linda Bernth before leaving with Tom Troeger who took him to Michiana Hematology Oncology. The next stop was the Leighton Plaza where

Stanley learned about school business by attending a SBCSC meeting where he was photographed with the board of trustees. The next morning the South Bend Redevelopment Commission was treated to a visit by Stanley with member Marcia Jones in the morning before Marcia took Stanley to visit her friend Margaret King. He continued on meeting community leaders when Bill Przybysz took him to the Hall of Fame where he had his picture taken with Mayor Luecke, the superintendent, Maritz Robles and Bob Montgomery of WSBT. A whirlwind weekend started with John Toth taking Stanley along for a train ride to Chicago, where he saw La Boheme. A sleepy Stanley met the Brian Kubicki family at the Jones Obenchain office before attending the Notre Dame game and visiting with the band. (Stanley was good luck-ND won!) Stanley was tired, so Loretta Frank took Stanley to Florida for a vacation where he got into a little trouble and she had to rescue him from an alligator’s mouth! After that he was famous and Tricia Sloma took Stanley to visit the WNDU morning show. We enjoyed our year with Flat Stanley and thank all the donors who help to make grants like this one possible. 7
