FIDA INTERNATIONAL: DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION IN EASTERN AFRICA

Bethlehem Family Development Project Bethlehem Family Development Project aims at improving the socio-economic status of poor families in Bishoftu Town by empowering the sponsored families to work for their community development. The Project will empower the community to address their poor household management and increase their knowledge on improved sanitation, health, agricultural production, income generation and affordable quality education for their Children. Fida is partnering with Ethiopian Mulu Wongel Amagnoch Church Development Organization (EMWACD) in Bethlehem Project. EMWACDO is a faith based non-profit making indigenous Organization initiated in 1993 and registered officially in October 2009 as an “Ethiopian Residents Charity”. The Project was formerly known as Bethlehem Children’s Home (BCH) which was caring for poor, destitute and orphaned children

since 1975 – 1991. Families in this Project area are poor and unable to access their basic needs in life like food, education for their children, clean water for drinking, good housing and better living conditions. The families are in poor living conditions. The Project will raise awareness on root causes of human rights violation and facilitate the community to understand the duties and responsibilities of everyone in reducing human suffering. The Project will encourage and support families to start income generating activities and support their Children for primary and secondary education. Both men and women will be empowered with necessary skills to enhance their economic development in regard to issues of environment, water and sanitation, food security, good health practices and justice for all people. The project goal is to contribute to the holistic wellbeing of the families in Bishoftu. The social- economic status of the families will be improved and therefore able to meet the educational needs of their children. Households will have adequate food, improve their water sources and exercise good health practices. After the former implementation periods of project, many outcomes have been realized including better living conditions of former sponsored Children and their families. Location: Bishoftu, East Shewa, Ethiopia Budget 2014: 158 350 € Duration of the project: 1975-2016 Project code: 5025

Leadership Enhancement Programme The purpose of the Project is to improve the Skills and competences of Partner organizations to address the rights of people groups in their communities. The project will train and equips partner’s leaders in issues of governance, Policies, organizational planning, Finance management, resource mobilization and other trainings as may be required by the organizations.

This project will be implemented by Fida Eastern Africa Regional office targeting the partner organization’s leadership. Fida Partners in eastern Africa are Full Gospel Churches of Kenya (FGCK) Pentecostal Churches of Uganda (PCU) Free Pentecostal Churches of Tanzania (FPCT) Ethiopian Guenet Church (EGC) Ethiopian Full Gospel Believers Church (EFGBC) CEPBU (The Community of Pentecostal Churches in Burundi) ADEPR (Association of Pentecostal Church of Rwanda) and CEPAC (The Pentecostal Churches in Central Africa). The problem of ineffective leadership in the partner organization is due to inadequate knowledge on the rights of people in the community and how to respond to the emerging crosscutting issues. The project will target 400 leaders from 8 partners in 7 countries. The project will facilitate the partners to conduct literature review on Institutional management tools and tailor them to suit their leadership structures and policies. The project will train Community Facilitators from the partner’s leadership on organizational Management and leadership skills, who will replicate the skills down in their organizations. Through the Umoja concept, the trained leaders will train other leaders from small community groups on crosscutting issues like environmental degradation, HIV/AIDS, the rights of every person to basic needs and community development work.

The project’s goal is to contribute to the holistic wellbeing of the society through an empowered partner who will provide justice, safety and caring in the communities of Eastern Africa. The local partners will be more responsible and committed to civil society actions. The partner’s leadership will have acquired competence in reaching out to the community needs and motivated to create organizational structures for better management. Regional Coordination The goal of the Eastern African Regional Coordination program is to support the local partners to independently carry the responsibility for their own work and continually develop it. The regional program aims at empowering the partner instead of creating dependency, Fida works together with nine different churches in the region. The members of the churches vary from seven million to some hundreds of thousands. The region of operation covers Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, the United Republic of Tanzania, and Uganda. The partner churches are the direct beneficiaries. Through them, the final beneficiaries – those living in poverty and the vulnerable of society – are reached. The project focuses on coordinating the Eastern African program: sharing the vision, ensuring the good governance, sound financial practices, and the continuous monitoring of the program’s impact. In addition, the development of child sponsorship program and integration of peacebuilding ideology into all activities of the program, are supported. The development objective of the program is to participate in developing the civil society to be more just and caring towards its vulnerable members. Regional Advocacy Programme The Project Purpose is to increase the engagement of Fida’s partners in Eastern Africa on advocacy issues through awareness raising and trainings. Advocating for human rights brings about positive changes, strengthening civil society and creating a legitimate space for the protection and promotion of everyone’s rights. Inadequate knowledge on advocacy and absence of leadership guidelines in advocacy has hold back the Church partner from advocacy actions.

Fida’s Partners in Eastern Africa are Full Gospel Churches of Kenya (FGCK), Pentecostal Churches of Uganda (PCU), Free Pentecostal Churches of Tanzania (FPCT), Ethiopian Guenet Church (EGC), Ethiopian Full Gospel Believers Church (EFGBC, The Community of Pentecostal Churches in Burundi (CEPBU), Association of Pentecostal Church of Rwanda (ADEPR) and The Pentecostal Churches in Central Africa (CEPAC). The project will be implemented by Fida Eastern Africa advocacy Program through these Partners. The target groups are the partners and the people who have had their human rights trampled on like People living with disability, people living with HIV, children and the voiceless. These people are included in the training and articulate the issues themselves (“human rights by people”, not only “human rights for people”). At the same time, the partners are challenged to advocate for, with and through those whose rights are violated. It is the right of every person to be safe from harm, to be treated fairly and with dignity, to live the life they choose, and to have an active part in their community and wider society. Human rights has to do with core values that is important for all people based on fairness, respect, equality, dignity and autonomy. The Project will empower Fida Partners in Eastern Africa through awareness and trainings on advocacy and support them to develop policy guidelines on advocacy interventions. The project will develop training materials to be used by partners in training and conduct trainings on the manual. Partners will be supplied with every necessary material on advocacy responses. The Project will monitor and report on the advocacy implementation process. The Project aims at contributing to the reduction of violation of human rights through increased involvement of partners in advocating for human rights. The expected impact is that those who were voiceless will have a voice through the empowered partners and their rights honoured. By the end of the programme, there should be an improvement in the Human Development Indicators, Human Development Index, Gender Inequality Index, and Corruption Perception Index in Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. The Project will work towards empowering partners in community engagement and participation in providing psychosocial support to Children, families and caregivers. The Project anticipates bringing psychosocial support to community level through the capacity and competence built in the previous project phase. Fida will continue empowering its partners in helping communities to support children and their caregivers. The project will be implemented by Fida Eastern Africa Psycho-social Support project for care of vulnerable Children and their care givers through its Partners. A growing number of children in Eastern Africa are exposed

to the devastating effects of poverty, conflicts, HIV and AIDS. Many children have lost their parents and family, experienced deprivation and abuse, been stigmatized, witnessed atrocities and suffered overwhelming grief. The Project will focus on emotional and social wellbeing of vulnerable children. The Psychosocial Support Project will strengthen the partner’s capacity in promoting the psychosocial wellbeing for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) and their caregivers. In the coming project phase (2014-2016) The Project will provide technical skills and resources to church/partners who will reach out to the community. In addition, Fida will also support the counterpart in planning activities and in facilitating the PSS trainings. Fida will further strengthen the capacity of the partner to be competent in meeting the challenges of PSS responses. The role of Fida personnel is advisory by nature for psychosocial support in Eastern Africa. Fida will also be involved in supporting and monitoring the implementation of the project. However, Fida does not take part of running any separate activities, since it is the responsibility of the partner. The Project will select sample communities from the partners who will be an evidence and example to demonstrate the role of psychosocial support in promoting effective and sustainable childcare, protection and support practices. The community focused approach (JOL; Journey of Life) will take place through reflections, dialogues and action among children, caregivers and concerned members of the community. The focus is on community awareness and action helping communities to reflect on the needs of vulnerable children and plan for a course of action to support them. The Projects goal is to contribute to the emotional rights and social wellbeing of vulnerable children through a just, Safe and Caring Church/Partners in the communities of Eastern Africa. Psychosocial support aims to ensure that children are loved, cared and protected. It is the support for the emotional and social aspects of a child’s life in order to help children to live with hope and dignity. Providing Support to Fida Supported Child Sponsorship Project in the Region The purpose of the project is to enhance the ability of nine child sponsorship projects to be more children friendly. This will involve building monitoring and administrative capacity of the child sponsorship projects through good systems and tools to support administration. This Project will be implemented by Fida East Africa support program to all Fida Supported Child Sponsorship Projects in the region. These projects include Bethlehem in Ethiopia, PCU in Uganda, Mwanza and Tanga in Tanzania, Homa-Bay, Kakamega in Kenya and other Child integrated projects. These Projects are with Fida partners in Eastern Africa. Child sponsorship programs have always been essential part of the regional cooperation. Before year 2011, these projects have been running their interventions independently and were targeting only to provide direct support to individual child. However since 2011, the nine sponsorship projects have become part of a centralised Fida Eastern Africa regional program. This Project focuses on strengthening the operations of the Sponsorship Projects in Eastern Africa. The project enhanced the administrative processes of sponsorship projects through increased ability of projects' to involve children in their activities that take place in the target communities. The Project will

provide knowledge and skills to the duty bearers (sponsorship projects) to ensure that the right holders (children and families) receive the best services. Giving skills and knowledge is in line with all of the poverty reduction strategies of all the countries which recognise the fact that, to tackle poverty, there is need to invest in human development. Child friendly projects will lead to a Just and safe community caring for the well-being of vulnerable children and youth. The Projects goal is to contribute towards a just and safe society caring for vulnerable children. The project desires to see that all children are safe from abuse and exploitation; that they are vibrant and happy children enjoying their childhood by being allowed to fully and actively participate in activities touching on their welfare. Children should have a say in the project interventions. The project also aims at promoting child rights and protection. This will be achieved by helping the partners develop child protection policies that are relevant to their situations. The project is to ensure that policies are implemented. Partners will be facilitated to promote the same at the community level. Location: Eastern Africa Budget 2014: 100 552 € Duration of the project: 2014-2016 Project code: 5251

Regional Food Security and Climate Change Programme The project’s purpose is to improve the livelihoods of the extremely poor (vulnerable) people living in communities affected by environmental and climatic problems in Eastern Africa region. The regional food security and climate change programs role is to empower Fida partner organizations as duty bearers to expand their environmental interventions through training. The project will be implemented by Fida Eastern Africa Regional food security and climate change program. Fida’s Partners in Eastern Africa are Full Gospel Churches of Kenya (FGCK), Pentecostal Churches of Uganda (PCU), Free Pentecostal Churches of Tanzania (FPCT), Ethiopian Guenet Church (EGC), Ethiopian Full Gospel Believers Church (EFGBC), The Community of Pentecostal Churches in Burundi (CEPBU), Association of Pentecostal Church of Rwanda (ADEPR) and The Pentecostal Churches in Central Africa (CEPAC). Different kinds of ecosystems have become vulnerable. Wetlands: surface water has decline, yet usage has intensify leading to land degradation and therefore affecting human livelihood. Part of the problem is caused by negative human activity in the communities and part is caused by climatic changes. Rain is a major limiting factor for crops, yet plants will require more water with warmer temperature. Warmer temperatures reduce length of growing seasons. Grain yield is highly sensitive to length of season. Crop pests and diseases may increase and irrigation water may decline. Vegetation will dry faster and drinking water becomes scarce. Eastern Africa food security and Climate change project will build the regional partner’s capacity to deal with environmental issues and to find better livelihood strategies for people suffering from the effects of climate change and environmental degradation. Since Fida’s Partners have been part of the planning process, they will be the key actors in the implementing process. The planning will continue more deeply in the first year and all stakeholders will be involved in the planning, implementing and monitoring. Networking will be a key factor in this project since lot of knowledge and expertise is available with the government and other NGOs. Partners’ project staff, community and church leaders will be trained at

Habari Maalum College, Arusha-Tanzania in various issues on environment such as tree planting, soil conservation, modern farming methods, rain water harvesting, agro forestry and related courses. The trained leaders and project staffs will convey the knowledge to their communities to empower the vulnerable people as the project right holders. The goal of the food security Project is to contribute to improved livelihoods of the extremely poor people living in communities affected by environmental and climatic problems. The expected change is that the people in target communities have found lasting solutions which improve their livelihoods. They will have a feeling that they can do something about the problems they face in their communities. Food security will improve; people will have more water available and acquire skills that help them to be more productive even during the dry seasons. People will be able to take better care of their livestock. Through gained knowledge, the communities will reduce harmful practices that affect the environment and become responsible in environmental conservation. Church Community Mobilization for Development Program in Bonga The purpose of the Project is to build the capacity of Bonga community on how to mobilize their own locally available resources so as to alleviate poverty and improve their livelihood. Bonga area has local resources and opportunities which are not yet exploited. The Project will influence the people to understand their rights to those resources. Fida’s partner in this project is the Ethiopian Guenet Church Development and Welfare Organization (EGCDWO) The Organization is the development arm of Ethiopian Guenet Church which was established in 1999. The partner has a strong presence in the community surrounding Bonga and therefore able to work with the community effectively. People living in the Project area see themselves as powerless and hopeless because of the escalating poverty caused by recurrent draught and environmental degradation. The Project is targeting 2,000 people who are living in total poverty. The project will contribute to the overall transformation of the disadvantaged communities in Bonga and the surrounding areas through mobilizing and building the capacity of 3,100 people from 10 selected local areas. The 3,100 will form 100 Self Help Groups (SHG). Training and empowerment on various crosscutting issue will be conducted through those self help groups. The groups will continue replicating to reach out to other community members. The CCMDPB Project is new and aiming at contributing to the holistic wellbeing of people through of a Just, safe and caring Church/Partner in Ethiopia. It is expected that at the end of the project period, the community’s knowledge and actions towards their human rights will have increased. Through the community training and empowerment, people’s lives will be transformed economically, socially, politically, emotionally and their living standards.

Church and Community Development Project The Project purpose is to improve the livelihood of vulnerable women of Fincha and Shambu towns by creating interventions that responds to the deep rooted poverty in the community. The People of Fincha and Shambu have been social-economically marginalized due to unavailability of infrastructure and facilities like Road, Electricity, Hospital and Schools. The community has limited access to income generating activities which lead to poor economic status of the people. The Ethiopian Mulu Wongel Amagnoch Church Development Organization (EMWACD) is the Fida partner in this Project at Fincha and Shambu. EMWACDO is a faith based non-profit making indigenous Organization initiated in 1993 and registered officially in October 2009 as an “Ethiopian Residents Charity”. The project targets mostly women who are the most vulnerable people in these towns due to the prevailing poverty levels. Water and Environment Protection in Moyale The purpose of the project is to increase sustainable and potable water supply for Human and Livestock in Moyale district. Due to prolonged dry spells every Year, Women and children walk long distances up to 7 Kms to collect water for domestic use. Young men move from one place to another in search of pastures and water for their livestock. The Project will enable the community to access water close to their villages.

The Fida partner in Moyale Project is Ethiopian Mulu Wongel Amagnoch Church Development Organization (EMWACD) which is a faith based non-profit making indigenous Organization initiated in 1993 and registered officially in October 2009 as an “Ethiopian Residents Charity”. The partner has a long history and presence in this community and therefore understands them well. Moyale is an area which has experienced drought throughout ages. Springs and rivers dried long time ago due to human activities which affected the environment. Sustainable water sources are scarce and cannot be accessed by all communities living in Moyale district. There have been frequent conflicts between the communities as they struggle for the few water points. The Project will collaborate with the community to construct a water pond which will collect rainy water which happens once in a while. The community will be empowered through training by the project on how to manage the water Pond and protect the environment surrounding the Pond area. The community will be sensitized on peace building and conflict prevention so that they don’t harm their neighbours who might come for the same water point. Both Women and men will be empowered on how to use water effectively in their different uses. Through the Project, part of the communities living in Moyale will have access to drinking water for humans and their livestock. There will be increased productivity in homes as a result of reduced long distances to fetch water. Conflicts between pastoralists who travel other places to search water for their Livestock will reduce. Pastoralists value water more than any other commodity. It is therefore expected that the wellbeing of the communities will be improved. Location: Moyale district, Ethiopia Budget 2014: 30 878 € Duration of the project: 2014-2016 Project code: 5029

Food Security for Small Scale Farmers The Project purpose is to increase food supplies for 600 families of Giharo and Bukemba in Rutana Province of Burundi through promotion and facilitation in better farming methods and practices that will enhance increased food production in the community. The Project will build the capacity of the community in sustainable land management, mobilization of local resource and adaptation to climate change. The Community of Pentecostal Churches in Burundi (CEPBU) is the main Fida partner in this program. During the past 4 decades, Burundi has undergone through destructive civil wars that caused a great damaged to the country’s economy. During this period, more than 500,000 fled the country to the neighbouring countries especially Tanzania. After a long process of peace talks between the rebels and the government, peace agreements were signed and the repatriation process was initiated in which a massive flow back of returnees were settled back to their origin places in Rutana province of Burundi. The resettlement process has faced a lot of challenges in meeting the needs of the returnee who were poor, illiterate, without food and shelter, and lacked farming inputs to start up their normal living. CEPBU and Fida have partnered to empower the community in understanding their rights in response to these challenges.

The Project will conduct church leaders training on food security/environment protection techniques and the formulation of food security and Environment protection policy. The partner will influence the community on matters related to food security and environment protection practices. The project will train the Community Coordinating Teams (CCT) who will be a representation of the 600 families on food security and environment protection. The CCT will establish farmers' groups in the community and train them on saving and credit methods, effective livestock management, preparation and development of tree nurseries and engage them in tree planting and protect of forest areas with contour lines. The project will provide the Community Coordinating Teams with training materials, seeds for demonstration tree nurseries and links to other environment protection organizations. The overall objective of this project is to contribute to the wellbeing of the returnee communities in Burundi. It is expected that, at the end of the project the returnees will increase their food production that is enough to sustain their family needs and support their children education. The communities will understand their rights to their basic needs and find solutions to their needs. The communities will be empowered to take care of the environment and how to increase the forest cover. Youth Centers for Vocational Training and Professional Reintegration Project The purpose of the Project is to empower the Church/Partner to relevantly address the needs of Youth in Burundi. The empowered partner will look at the life issues affecting a large number of young people who drop out of school without acquiring the intellectual, professional and physical abilities to address their needs. The project will create awareness on the rights of young people and how they can influence the duty bearers on their rights. The project will be implemented by The Community of Pentecostal Churches in Burundi (CEPBU) in partnership with Fida International. The Project will be spread across 7 local church assemblies in the communities which have the largest population of unemployed Youth. The project will be implemented in a holistic manner with the active participation of the all stakeholders including the Young people. In Burundi, a large number of young people leave school early without acquiring the intellectual, professional and physical abilities in order to fit into the socio - professional or find a job. The education system has indeed a high repetition rate in primary education (38%) and secondary education (29%). At the end of each school year, a very important number of pupils drop out the school. After primary school (6 years of schooling), many pupils do not have access to secondary education. This situation is more critical when it comes to the returnees from Tanzania. Most of the children who were in Tanzania schools drop out when they arrive in Burundi because of the language barrier. Schools in Burundi use French language unlike in Tanzania who use Swahili and English and therefore makes it difficult for returnees Children. There are various activities which will take place during the implementation process. Among the activities are to train Church leaders on the rights of Youth and the drafting of the youth policy. The project will follow up the approval and adoption of the youth ministry policy by CEPBU and support the process of printing and dissemination. The project will assist the community in mobilization of local resources for the

building of the recreational facilities (youth centers) in Bujumbura and Ruyigi. After building the Centres, the project will see to it that the Centres are equipped with necessary materials for training. The expected impact of this project is a strengthened and capacitated partner, able to address the needs of the Youth in the communities. The project aims to see a Church /partner that advocate for justice and provides a safe place for young people through caring for the most disadvantaged Youth in the community. The developed Youth centers will empower young people who drop out of formal schools by providing them with vocational and professional training. Another expected impact is the increased participation of Young people in the social activities of the church. The youth will become responsible people in the community after being empowered. HIV and AIDS Competent Partner in Burundi The Purpose of the project is to increase the competence of Church leaders in response to the spread of HIV and AIDS in the community and improve caring of People Living with HIV in Burundi. The project will facilitate the awareness raising on the rights of all people to reduce stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS. The project will be implemented by the Fida partner in Burundi. The partner in this project is the Community of Pentecostal Churches in Burundi (CEPBU) the project will target Church leaders who will benefit from the project’s capacity building through trainings. Due to the increased myths and misconception on HIV and AIDS in the community, people living with HIV/AIDS have encountered inhuman treatment from other members of the society. Stigma and discrimination has so far hindered the process of HIV Prevention because people fear to go for HIV testing to know about their status. To respond effectively to this challenge, empowering Church leaders who have respected positions in the community can reduce discrimination of people living with HIV and AIDS and enhance the knowledge on HIV and AIDS. During the implementation process, the project will enhance HIV and AIDS responses in the community by creating awareness and training Church leaders on the basic facts of HIV/AIDS. The projects activities will involve top Church leaders training, Training of trainers, formulation of HIV and AIDS materials, distribution of HIV materials to the trained Church leaders, formulation of HIV and AIDS policy, establishment of support groups of people living with HIV and AIDS and support to Orphans and vulnerable Children in their education. The goal of this project is to contribute to the reduction of the spread of HIV in the community and improve the wellbeing of people living with HIV and AIDS. Through a Just, safe and caring Church/partner, people infected and affected by HIV will have relief and find a safe place where people living with HIV and AIDS will be accommodated and involved in community activities. The society will be transformed to create an HIV and AIDS friendly environment with zero stigmas and zero discrimination. People living with and affected by HIV and AIDS will know their rights and enjoy their wellbeing.

Kakamega Child Sponsorship Project The Project purpose is to build the capacity of Full Gospel Churches of Kenya in Kakamega on the rights of Children living with disability and their position in the community. Children living with disability (CWD) in western Kenya have suffered from discrimination and neglect by the society and so it is important to sensitize the whole community on the role of every individual in support to CWD. The Fida partner in this Project is Full gospel Churches of Kenya who has a long experience working with the communities in western and other places in Kenya. The partnership between Fida and FGCK has a historical background because both started working together in western Kenya many years ago. The target

community is well understood by both organizations. Western Kenya has a large number of children with disability and a few survive to adulthood because of neglect and discrimination. Children with disability are often hidden in homes because their parents feel stigmatized and ashamed when they expose them to the public. For children who are grown up, they suffer from isolation and inability to move from one place to another due to lack of mobility devices. The partner will be empowered to reach out the community on the issue of disability. To improve the living conditions of Children with Disabilities and their families in Kakamega, the project will empower the partner who is working with the community to facilitate the access to knowledge and information regarding the rights of Children with disability. The partner will train families of CWD on food production and enhanced household capacity to mobilize financial resources so as to improve their level of income. As the livelihoods of households improve, the well-being of the children will be achieved. The Project aims at realizing the well-being of families and Children living with disabilities in Kakamega District. Families will have adequate food supply from their farms after being equipped with skills on modern farming an sponsored children acquire education in various levels. Location: Kakamega, Kenya Budget 2014: 49 880 € Duration of the project: 2011-2016 Project code: 5046

Empowering Churches to care for Orphans and Vulnerable Children The Project’s purpose is to increase the capacity of the Full Gospel Churches of Kenya (FGCK) which is the organization that will provide access to holistic education and family care in Kawangware. The Focus will be on the right s of Children working and living on the streets. The most important aspect will be empowerment of children on the brink of joining the streets. The prevention program will empower children, families and the community to deal with the social, economic and cultural issues that increase children vulnerability.

FGCK is the Fida partner in this project. Fida International builds up the capacity of FGCK to work with OVC. The partner will in turn facilitate the increased community based responses and supporting to OVC. The root causes of the absence of holistic care for orphans and vulnerable children are mainly poverty which holds back the families from meeting the basic needs. Alcoholism and drug abuse and family challenges like family separation, poor parenting, child abuse, neglect, and negative cultural practices have contributed to the children moving to the streets or run away from home. The project will work closely with the community, Children, Civil society and relevant government departments at the local to national level. There is good relationship with the government Children Department and local administration including police department, local chiefs and volunteer groups. Families and children will be empowered to respond to violations against Children rights. The Project will increase children participation in various activities including formation of Children Clubs and committees. Some children will receive sponsorship for their education. All the activities will involve Men and women, Boys and Girls.

The goal of the project is to contribute to the holistic wellbeing of Orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Kenya and reduce the influx of Children in the streets of Nairobi. The community will realize increased holistic care to orphans and vulnerable children and a reduction in violation of the rights of Children. Children will enjoy emotional and parental care; have access to basic needs in life like health, education, food, shelter and social support from the society. Children living and working in the streets have engaged themselves in crime because of isolation from the society. The project aims at reducing the gap and support them in social integration. Previous beneficiaries of these project have acquired education and other benefits which have made them responsible and important people in the community. Empowering Maasai Girls and Communities in Narok District The purpose of the project is to increase the capacity of Full Gospel Churches of Kenya (FGCK) and other Faith Based Organizations (FBOs) in Loita to advocate for the rights of Maasai girls to education, advocate against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), early forced marriages (EFM,) retrogressive cultural practices and implement the alternative right of passage (ARP) Limited access and disapproval of girls education in Maasai community have caused illiteracy and low educational levels which keep the status of Maasai women poor and excluded from decision making process. The local partner in this Project is the Full Gospel churches of Kenya (FGCK) who has a wealthy of experience in working with Maasai Community. Maasai girls are marginalized and their right to education violated through the cultural practice of FGM and EFM. These cultural practices have disadvantaged girls because they are not allowed to pursue education like the Maasai boy child who are honored and respected in the community. As a result the Maasai girls and women cannot access formal employment and lack skills that can enable them to effectively undertake viable economic activities. Due to high illiteracy levels and adherence to culture, girls and women have very low status in the community with no rights. The role of Maasai girls is most often limited to wifehood and bearing children. Poor opportunities for education means limited possibilities in developing their skills and knowledge, and limited understanding of their rights. Without knowledge and understanding of their rights the Maasai women continue complying with the oppressive culture and subjecting their own daughters for the same. The project will build the capacity of FGCK and FBOs in Narok district who will sensitize and empower the Maasai community to stop FGM and early forced marriage and on the exchange implement the alternative rite of passage for their Girls. FGCK and FBOs will also work with the community to show the community the importance of educating girls. Primary schools will also be reached to create a safe environment for girls who wish to pursue education. The implementation of this project will involve men and women who are parents and at the same time engage the participation of both boys and Girls who play a key role in those retrogressive cultural practices. The Project aims at contributing towards an empowered Maasai girl in Loita community who has realized their right to education through reduced prevalence of Female Genital Mutilation and Early Forced Marriages.

The status of girls in the Maasai community is expected to improve through reduced cultural maltreatment and increased access to education. The capacity of the partner in addressing FGM, EFM, ARP and crosscutting issues will also improve through the project activities. The expected impact on the Maasai girls is the ability to make decision of their own lives and participate actively in the community development. Some of the previously supported Girls have completed their University education and are working in the community as role models. The partner will be responsible to implement the Project in this community. Project has four main result areas. Youth with Disabilities Community Programme The purpose of the project is to strengthen the Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) program of the partner which provides services to children with disabilities in the community. The Project is proposed to continue with phase three in the period 2014-2016 due to the critical need with Children living with disability. The Project is implementation by the Free Pentecostal Churches of Tanzania (FPCT) who is Fida Partner in Tanzania and targets 500 Children and Youth living with disability in Tanga region. Insufficient care and quality service to children with disabilities under five years has so many consequences. Neglect and denial to the children’s rights to basic needs such as nutritious food, good shelter and clothes have impacted children with disability negatively. Poor living conditions of families have also contributed so much to insufficient support to these children. Both Children and their families will need support to reverse the trend. To respond to the core problem, the Project will continue strengthening the Community based rehabilitation services and care to children with disabilities. The intervention will be guided by the current WHO-CBR matrix in tackling some aspects of disability challenges. The improved care and quality of CBR services for children with disabilities under five years old include integrated nutrition, medical support and mobility assistive equipment. The project will also focus on Child sponsorship, Family empowerment through micro-credit programs and training on sustainable food security. The Projects goal is to contribute to the wellbeing of children with disabilities and their families through a just, safe and caring partner in Tanzania. Family members and other community members will be committed and responsible for taking care of their children and youth with disabilities. The Community based rehabilitation program will be improved to enhance self reliance and sustainability. Location: Tanga, Tanzania Budget 2014: 43 546 € Duration of the project: 2011-2016 Project code: 5064 PCU Child Sponsorship Project The purpose of the project is to empower the local partner to facilitate holistic development for Orphans and Vulnerable Children and their families. The project will integrate a component on former child soldiers, who were abducted during the war of the Lord’s Resistance Army in Northern Uganda. Through the project, the capacity of their families and communities will be improved to enable them protect and respond to the basic needs of the Children. The project will be implemented by Pentecostal Churches of Uganda (PCU) in partnership with Fida International and will provide support to sponsored Children as well as empowering their families and guardians on rights of Children, and Child protection measures. The root causes of Children’s suffering is poverty in their families due to inability to access viable economic activities, negative attitude on education caused by harmful cultural beliefs and inadequate knowledge on the children right to education, especially girls, impacts of HIV/AIDS, natural calamity like landslides and war have led to death of parents or guardians. Children are becoming vulnerable without access to education, healthcare and livelihood.

The Project will train the partner’s field workers on sponsorship management & protection issues, build the capacity of the care givers/field workers and volunteers in food security issues, create awareness on the cross-cutting issues like HIV/AIDS, environment and food security, Gender based violence and sponsor the children for their primary, secondary, university and vocational training.
