IN NTROD DUCTIION The activities of the OIE Sub b-Regional R Representatio on for East Africa A and thee Horn of Affrica (OIE SRR R-EA) started d in January 2010. The Representation now cove ers 13 OIE Member Cou untries in eastern Africa (including the Republic of South Su udan) and lia aises with bboth the East African Com mmunity (EAC C) and the Inter-Governm I mental Auth hority on Devvelopment (I GAD). A Coooperation Agreeement with the latter wa as signed in D December 20 014. An upd dated Coopera ration Agreem ment with the African Unioon Interafrica an Bureau fo for Animal Reesources (AU U-IBAR) was signed in May M 2015 and a draft Coop peration Agre eement with the Indian Ocean O Comm mission (IOC) was approveed by the OIE Council in September S 20 015 and will be endorsed d in May nextt year. Sincce the first of September, the offfice is stren ngthened byy the appoi ntment of Dr. Sam Wakkhusama as Deputy-Repre D esentative. The annual bud dget of the Representaation for 20 015 increase ed by 34%, largely due e to the oppoortunity to orrganise the Inter-regionall conference on Rift Valle ey fever in thhe Horn of Africa A and the Middle East (Djibouti, April), A the 4thh meeting of Deans and Principals off Veterinary Faculties and Schools in Southern S and d Eastern Affrica (Kenya, August) and d the trainin g of OIE foc cal points for vveterinary prooducts from English-spea E aking Africa and a the Midd dle East (Ugaanda, December). The office still spearhead ds the devvelopment of o the offic cial OIE we website for Africa : www w.rr-africa.oiee.int (inclu uding the m mobile website). A dedicated webssite for the VETGOV proggramme was launched on August 28th : www.rr-africa.oie.int/ve etgov.html The office also coordinated the technicaal aspects off the first OIE continenttal conferenc ce on the role of the veterrinary para-professionals in Africa, he eld in Pretoria (October),, in close pa artnership with GALVmed and a the Afric ca Veterinaryy Technician ns Association n (AVTA). It also coordin nated the two regional seminars on harmonizatio h n of veterin nary legislation at comm munity level, held in Tunisia (UMA) and Lesotho (SADC). The office remaains involved d in a conssiderable nu umber of continental, reegional and national proggrammes, thee most important being tthe continental Veterinary ry Governance ce in Africa (VETGOV) proggramme (with h IBAR and FAO). F Furtheermore, the office o is looking forward tto additional financial meaans through the approval of the com mbined Stre engthening Veterinary V Seervices in Developing De Coun untries and Rabies R Pilot project p (SVS DC+R), fund ded by the European E Parrliament, thrrough the Euroopean Commission Delega ation in Nairrobi. GEOGRAPHICAL COVERAGE OF THE REPRESENTATION The Sub-Regional Representation covers 13 countries of East Africa and the Horn of Africa, most of which are Member States of the East African Community (EAC), based in Arusha, Tanzania and / or the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), based in Djibouti City, Djibouti. The Seychelles and Tanzania are also Member States of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and are therefore also covered by the OIE Sub-Regional Representation for Southern Africa, based in Gaborone (Botswana).

PRODUCTION STATISTICS FOR THE SUBREGION In terms of terrestrial animals, data are incomplete due to missing information from some Member Countries. Nevertheless, it can reliably be concluded that the Region hosts around 158 million head of cattle (with the Federal Republic of Ethiopia having the highest number at 54 million) and 274 million small ruminants (source : OIE-WAHID, 2015, data from 2014 annual reports).
