PRESS KIT Festival presentation Temporada Alta: a commitment to internationalshows and Catalanwriting A festival with 88 shows from 16 different countries ,

We have prepared the twenty-second edition of Temporada Alta – Festival de Tardor de Catalunya, organised by Bitò Produccions, along with the City Council of Girona and the Town Council of Salt, the Department of Culture of the Catalan Government, the Provincial Council of Girona and INAEM (National Institute of Scenic Arts and Music). The festival will begin on 3 October with the premiere of Degustació, de l’edat de pedra al Celler de Can Roca, a show about the world of cuisine and its relationship with culture, directed by Joan Ollé. This edition of the festival includes 88 shows from 16 different countries (Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, the US, Italy, Great Britain, Serbia, Lithuania, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, Brazil, Morocco, Catalonia and Cuba). For several years now, we have been experiencing an economic situation that is becoming more difficult every day. The result is thatculture is considered a dispensable or superfluous asset. This situation is made worse by the fact that, even before the crisis began, the number of peopleearning a living from culture in Catalonia was less than 50%the figure in countries such as France, Germany, Scandinavian countries or the Netherlands. Furthermore, the Spanish State, with the increase 03

PRESS KIT Festival presentation in VAT, has left cultural programmes in a state of almost completeinanition. The consequence for Catalonia is that productions are created with very few resources and their existence is too shortlived. The gap emerging between theatre here and theatre in central Europe and Scandinavia is growing; at an early stage, the financial crisis particularly affected programmes and now it very intensely affects creation and production. The outlook is therefore challenging, and we believe that it is our obligation to work to preserve what we can of current Catalan creation, build relationships withthe international performing artsscene and try and give new generations of Catalan artiststhe chance to continue working and collaborating with other countries in order that their creations may be seen outside Catalonia. For this reason, we are presenting a festival, with the aim of it being a festival of the future, with a comprehensive international programme (Romina Paula, Thomas Ostermeier, Josef Nadj, Oskaras Korsunovas,Toni Servillo and the Piccolo Teatro di Milano, Guy Cassiers, Mariano Pensotti, Maria Friedman, Sidi Larbicherkaoui, Fabrice Murgia, etc.), along with some Spanish artists who are more internationally renowned (Eva Yerbabuena and the Spanish-Argentinian Rodrigo García), and premieres by some of the best Catalanartists (Joan Ollé, Josep Maria Miró, Àlex Rigola, Sergi López, Jordi Casanovas, etc.). This is in a year in which we have been aiming to high light new creation and contemporary Catalan creation (Roger Bernat, Lali Ayguadé, Ivan Morales, Jordi Galí, El Conde de Torrefiel, Roser López, Marcos Morau from Veronal, Cabo San Roque, etc.). We have also wanted to further enhance the line dedicated to expanding the internationalisation of Catalan performing arts, creating a week for international producerswith more content, reinforced by an international meeting of producers. Despite the fact that two years ago the European Union suspended our funding, we are continuing with Cross-border Catalan Performing Arts, including 5 shows from the Théâtre del Archipel de Perpignan in the festival programme and we are collaborating with the common work of the public. Lastly, we coproduced several international shows or Catalan shows with an international vocation such as the new Blaï Mateu production that will premiere in 2015, Re-construcció: NUMAX by Roger Bernat, Fauna by Romina Paula and El policía de las ratas by Àlex Rigola. Despite this year having a similar budget to that of last year, the festival is presenting 10 shows more, it is incorporating different works and we firmly believe that we have one of the best international programmesin the history of Temporada Alta. Temporada Alta - Festival de Tardor de Catalunyawill be, as it is every autumn, the meeting place for artistsfrom various places and particularly for artists and the public. The festival is continuing its 04

PRESS KIT Festival presentation commitment to work with many new Catalan productions with the idea being todrive them forward and allow new projects of Catalan artiststo be seen. We believe that with this edition, Temporada Alta 2013 will be consolidated as a festival of the future, firmly rooted in the past, but particularly with a different and ambitious vision of what we believe a festival of the future needs to be. The core components on which Temporada Alta 2013 is based are: 1.-International programme 2.-The will to be a driving force of theatrical creation 3.-Catalan writing 4.-Young artists and new creation 5.-Internationalisation of Catalan performing arts 6.-Music 7.- Cinema 8.-Complentary activities 9.-The importance of the public

1. INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME For years Temporada Alta has been defined as the gateway to Catalonia and the rest of Spain for many international productions and it has the threefold aim of keeping the Catalan public current on new international theatre, helping to place Catalonia on the global performing arts map and attracting professionals and fans of performing arts to our cities. This year, as we have mentioned, the festival is more international than ever and it will include 34 shows from outside Catalonia (5 in the Archipel), of which 26 are international and 8 are from the rest of Spain.

THEATRE-DANCE-CIRCUS We have already said that the international programme is very ambitious. It includes theatre, dance and circus and it is one of the fundamental elements of the festival. We wanted, as we have done regularly, to mix new productions by directors who have already been to the festival with others who are coming for the first time and who we would like to think will become known in Catalonia and in Spain thanks to Temporada Alta. With this, we want to help both the public and Catalan artists to always be up to date on the latest in international performing arts. Some of the major foreign artists who will be present at the Festival this year are:

05

PRESS KIT Festival presentation •

Oskaras Korsunovas will be coming to Temporada Alta for the third

time with a version of Els baixos fons by Gorki, one of his most recognised productions internationally, after his success in the 2011 edition with Miranda, his version of The Tempest by Shakespeare and last year, Hamlet. •

Guy Cassiers is returning to Temporada Alta, also for the third time, af-

ter his presentation in 2010 with Rojo Reposado performed by Dirk Roofthooft, and last year with Duisterhart, (based on Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad) performed by Josee de Pauw. This year, we will be able to see Orlando by Virginia Wolf performed, this time, by Katelijne Damen. •

Toni Servillo with the Piccolo Teatro di Milano and his company from

NaplesTeatri Uniti. Who could better present Le voci di dentro of his fellow Neapolitan Eduardo di Filippo? Servillo, one of the great actors of contemporary Italian theatre returns to Temporada Alta after the successful Trilogia della villeggiatura along with Teatri Uniti who are taking part in the festival for the third time. •

Thomas Ostermeier returns to Temporada Alta for the second time,

nine years after presenting Wunschkoncert (Request concert) at the 2004 edition. On this occasion he is presenting Susn, a production by Münchner Kammerspiele that will bring Brigitte Hobmeier, one of the most impressive young actresses currently in German theatre, to Girona for the first time. •

Josef Nadj with Woyzeck. Josef Nadj has been to Catalonia several

times and now it is time to present his legendary version of Woyzeck, which we could see many years agoat the since defunct Sitges Festival. It is the second time the artist will be participating in Temporada Alta after presenting Petit psaume du matin with Dominique Mercy in 2005. We will also take advantage of his stay in Girona to present at Cine Truffaut El cuaderno de barro, the film by Isaki Lacuesta, supplementary to Los pasos dobles which he made about the show Pasodoble by Miquel Barceló and Josef Nadj. •

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Sidi Larbi is back and this time with 4D, a pro-

gramme of duos. Larbi needs no introduction, we all remember Origin, Dunas, with the flamenco dancer María Pagès, which made its debut at the festival in 2009 and was co-produced by EL CANAL orthe Play that we saw last year. • 06

Fabrice Murgia. At the last edition of the festival, this young Belgian

PRESS KIT Festival presentation year he is bringing the show that made him one of the best rising stars ofEuropean performing arts: Le Chagrin des ogres, a disturbing piece of theatre about ashooting in a German school, which he uses to address the subject of the malaiseof a whole generation with his own aesthetic, a blend of different artistic languages. •

Edward Hall and his company Propeller are well-known to Tempora-

da Alta after having already presented five of his productions (Conte d’hivern, L’amanisiment de la fera, Ricard III, Enric V and Nit de reis). Now and as always, with exclusively male actors, he will be presenting another of Shakespeare’s works, A midsummer Night’s Dream. •

Philippe Genty, another classic artist of Temporada Alta, where he ap-

peared for the first time in 1994, is back at the festival with his latest work, Ne m’oublie pas, a show in which his visual charactercontinues to be marked and on this occasion he mixes actors/dancers and mannequins on stage. •

Maria Friedman, who will present a concert consisting entirely of songs

by Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein under the title Lenny &Steve.

Ibero-American connection For years, Temporada Alta has been the gateway to EuropeforIbero-American theatreand especially Argentinian theatre. In the last few years, Ibero-American theatre has particularly interested usand as such, we decided to dedicate a section of the festival to this part of the world, because we want Temporada Alta to be, in some way, the meeting point for European and Ibero-American performing arts. This year we will be presenting 5 shows from 4 countries: Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Mexico, with the support of the Iberescena programme. • We are sure that Julia , the version of La senyoreta Júlia by Strinberg from the Brazilian director Christiane Jatahy, will be one of the surprises and one of the most interesting discoveriesfor the festival public. Jatahy also plays with a blend of theatre and live cinemaand does it very effectively with spectacular results. (Brazil) • Romina Paula is the Argentinian director and writer who came to Europe for the first time when we presented her extraordinary show El tiempo todo entero at Temporada Alta, which for us was one of the best shows that we have ever hosted at the festival. 07

PRESS KIT Festival presentation This year, she will also be presenting for the first time in Europe, her new production Fauna. (Argentina) • Mariano Pensotti has already been to Temporada Alta twice before, years ago with Marea, a street show and later with A vegades sembla que et veig, and he is back with Cineastas, a show that he is presenting all around Europe, offering both theatre and cinema and we are sure that it will be another of the surprises of the festival. (Argentina) • Pequeño Teatro de Morondanga, directed by Roberto Suárez has never been in Europeand they will present Bienvenido a casa, a show that must be seen in two different sessions. A hilarious tragicomedy in which nothing is as it seems; in the first session, we are shown the show from the front and in the second, from the side, which allows us to see what is happening off stage....(Uruguay) • Lagartijas tiradas al sol is a community of artists of libertarian thinking whose El rumor del incendio, a political theatre show, we have already seen in the festival. Now with Montserrat they investigate the life of a woman, the mother of one of the group members, who disappeared 20 years ago. This will be its European premiere. (Mexico)

Shows from the rest of Spain Amongst other shows, this year the programme includes two Spanish artists who have premiered their shows in prestigious theatres and foreign festivals and they are presenting them in Catalonia at Temporada Alta. • Eva Yerbabuena returns to Temporada Alta to present Ay!,her new piece, critically acclaimed at its premiere at the prestigious Sadler’s Wells theatre in London. Yerbabuena is coming to present her project with a more contemporary look after her first appearance at the festival with El huso de la memoria en 2006. • The Spanish-Argentinian artist Rodrigo García will participate at Temporada Alta for the first time with Daisy, his latest creation, which will come to Salt after its premiere in Geneva at La Bâtie-Festival. We will see the production by the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico of Madrid along with Els Joglars calle El coloquio de los perros, an adaptation of the Cervantes classic involving the incorporation of Ramon Fontseré into the company as director. The presentation of the show at Temporada Alta marks the return of the company to Catalonia after over seven years’ absence. 08

PRESS KIT Festival presentation 2.-WILL TO DRIVE FORWARD THEATRICAL CREATION Temporada Alta continues to consider supporting Catalan theatrical creationas a line of strategy because at this time, the economic situation does not only severely affect programmes but it increasingly reduces the number of productions and forces them to be made with wholly insufficient resources. For 10 years, the festival has been providing supportto various Catalan productions; this support has been modest but, we hope, effective. In the last 4 years, the festival has strengthened this line, collaborating with El Canal, which headed the productions and collaborated with international productions. Temporada Alta and El Canal coproductions were seen by more than 600,000 spectators and they travelled to 20 different countries. Now that El Canal is at a dead end, Temporada Alta will continue to collaborate in various productions and furthermore, it is opening a new line that, with the support of the Government, will for the time being, carry out the work of El Canal. The productions that will be presented in this new line are: • Degustació, de l’edat de pedra al Celler de can Roca, directed byJoan Ollé. • Els folls de Shakespeare, byLlàtzer Garcia and Marc Rosich, directed by Miquel Górriz andperformed by Xicu Masó and Carles Martínez. • Orelles de xocolata, in collaboration with Orella Activa. • El policía de las ratas, by Roberto Bolaño and directed by Àlex Rigola. • El balneari, coproduced by Mentidera Teatre and La Ruta 40. Written by Marc Artigau from texts by Jaterine Mansfield. • Nou espectacle de Baró d’Evel (Blaï Mateu and Camille Decourtye). New tent showthat will be presented at Temporada Alta 2015. • Fauna, de Romina Paula. The new production by her company, with Esteban Bigliardi, Rafael Ferro, Pilar Gamboa and Susana Pampín. • RE-Presentació: Numax, a creation by Roger Bernat. • K.O.L. 1714, the new show for childrenby the clown company Claret Papiol. This year we are opening another gateway with the production Migranland by Àlex Rigola, fully funded by “La Caixa” Foundation within its programme Art per a la Millora Social de l’Obra Social “la Caixa”. At the festival this year, there will be collaboration in the production of 18 shows. These coproductions or collaborations in production are carried out both withtheatres and public institutions, (Teatre Lliure, Teatro de la Abadía, MACBA), and with companies, producers and private spaces (Sala Beckett, Mal Pelo, Cia. Marta Carrasco, Enresòl de Produccions, Teatre en Primer Plà, Mentidera Teatre, La Ruta 40, Camut Band, Gatcapat SL., Orella Activa, Cia. Claret Papiol, etc.). In spite of the economic situation making the distributing of shows very difficult, the vast ma09

PRESS KIT Festival presentation jority of these productions plan to have a season in Barcelona and a subsequent tour. This will allow works written and directed by some of the best Catalan artists to premiere at the festival: Joan Ollé, Marta Carrasco, Àlex Rigola, Jordi Casanovas, Cristina Clemente, Camut Band, Roger Bernat, Ivan Benet, etc. while it will also help these shows to have a future. All this will be combined with a strong presence of productions and artists from Girona (La mentidera, La Planeta, Orella Activa, Xicu Masó, the Migraland team, Claret Papiol, Mal Pelo, etc.). Within the policy of coproductions and collaborations in production, we have maintained, in spite of difficulties, collaboration in some international productions, both of Catalan artists (Àlex Rigola, Roger Bernat and Blaï Mateu with a show that will premier in 2015), and also – in just one case this year – of foreign artists (Romina Paula) in whom the festival trusts artistically. These collaborations put the festival on the international stage and open the doors to potential future collaborations between the coproducing institutions.

3.-CATALAN WRITING In Catalonia for a few years now we have had an explosion in the world of theatre writing that has created an amount of writers and playwrights that is much higher than by rights we should be producing, and furthermore, with an average quality and variety that is well above that of much mainstream literature that we are surrounded by. At Temporada Alta we want to work together to continue making this phenomenon possible, to help the new talent flourish and foster artistic growth on a national and international level of those who have been establishing themselves in the last few years. This is our aim both in the field of contemporary creation and particularly in that of textual writing. Furthermore, we find this presence in the programme at all levels (from already very established writers to those who are beginning their careers) and in the different artistic fields present at Temporada Alta, from textual theatre to contemporary creation, dance, cinema and music. For a couple of years now, as a game, and in order to highlight the importance that we wish to attribute to Catalan textual writing, we organised the Torneig de dramatúrgia catalane, a “competition” with a preliminary round, semi-finals and a final, which has been growing rapidly as one of the most highly anticipated events by the public and one of the most successful features of the festival. We have even exported the model to Buenos Aires and within the small festival Temporada Alta en Buenos Aires/Semana Catalana en Timbre 4 a Catalan-Argentinian Torneig de Dramatúrgia was organised, which has also enjoyed much success (we must say here that Jordi Galceran beat the Buenos Aires candidate in the final!). This year will be the third edition and we continue to have a good selection of participating writers: Marc Artigau, Jordi Casanovas, Marc Crehuet, Carol López, Paco Mir, Jordi Oriol, Marc Rosich and Mercè Sarrias. 010

PRESS KIT Festival presentation This year we will be incorporating another theatre game, Primera Plana, proposed by Juan Carlos Martel. Inspired by other similar international games, it will include four writers (Cristina Clemente, Guillem Clua, Daniela Feixas and Pau Miró) and four directors (Carles Fernández Giua, Alícia Gorina, Jordi Prat and Mercè Vila) who will create and present to the public four small theatre productions in 24 hours, working with actors selected by quick casting. This is another theatre game that has only been achievable thanks to the high level of Catalan theatrical creation.

4.-YOUNG ARTISTS AND NEW CREATION Quite a few years ago now Temporada Alta developed its programme by presenting three main “levels” of theatrical creation in one programme: along with the great international artists, we have many of the more established artists of Catalonia, but we want the latter to share a programme with some of the younger artists who we believe show the greatest promise and with Catalan stage artists dedicated to contemporary creation. This year, amongst other young artists, we will be able to see at Temporada Alta creations by Cristina Clemente, Ivan Morales, Cabo Sanroque, El Conde de Torrefiel, Marcos Morau (Veronal), Josep Maria Miró, Roser López Espinosa, Guido Sarli, Jordi Galí etc. For years, we have been working with this policy at Temporada Alta and we like to see how some artists, who we supported when they were starting out (directors and artists at that time unknown, such as Àlex Rigola, Xavier Albertí and later Pau Miró or Jordi Casanovas), are now well established as major artists of Catalan theatre. At the festival, we maintain the will and commitment to continue backing the young artists who we truly believe in, and providing them with some modest support for their growth. From this line of work with young artists, we highlight the continuity of the #FF80 project, organised with El Graner centre of research, creation and consolidation of body language and movement linked to the Mercat de les Flors, which we started in the last edition of Temporada Alta. This is a project that supports young artists of the world of dance who are being trained and are developing their careers between Catalonia and other countries. A new generation of artists with great potential who we believe it is necessary to follow and support. Within this project, works are presented by El Conde de Torrefiel, Marcos Morau (Veronal), Roser López Espinosa and Guido Sarli (Umma Umma Dance) and work and artistic accompaniment sessions are organised between a group of artists of the same generation.

5.-THE INTERNATIONALISATION OFCATALAN PERFORMING ARTS Always, but especially in the current climate, both achieving the exportation of Catalan creations and the collaboration of Catalan artists with other European artists or those from further afield, are 011

PRESS KIT Festival presentation essential to the survival and consolidation of our companies. The festival’s resources are modest and therefore our contributions are likewise modest but we nevertheless believe that the internationalisation of Catalan performing arts has to be a priority and we are working more and more towards this in various lines, which includes some new features: Producers’Week We have been organising a Producers’ Week at Temporada Alta since 2011 and we have to say that it has been rather successful. At this event, we concentrate a few contemporary shows into the same week to facilitate the arrival of foreign producers and so that they know what is done in Catalonia. We are continuing with the model and in this edition we are presenting some Catalan productions by artists who we believe could easily be – and some of whom already are – in international programmes (Roger Bernat, Àlex Rigola, Cabo San Roque, Jordi Galí) combining them with artists from outside Catalonia who are having a great impact internationally (Rodrigo García, Eva Yerbabuena), and on this occasion with a particularfocus onArgentinian theatre (Romina Paula, Mariano Pensotti). Our particular focus on Argentina is due to theproductions that we are presenting and also the will to gradually make Temporada Alta the point of contact and relationshipbetween Ibero-American theatre and European theatre, which for years have been the two great international focussesof the festival. For the second year, within producers’ week and in collaboration with El Graner, we are continuing with #FF80, a project of follow-up and support for a whole generation of young choreographers born in the 1980’s who have been training and beginning their careerswith one foot in Catalonia and another in a foreign country, which they have used as a stepping stone. The project includes work meetings between this group of artistsand the presentation of shows of four of these artists, both to the festival public and to professionals who will be visiting us on those days: El Conde de Torrefiel, Marcos Morau (Veronal), Roser López Espinosa and Guido Sarli. As well as the possibility of seeing the shows on offer, for the second time an international professional day has been organised in which some production projects will be presented by domestic and foreign institutions. This will help make new Catalan artists known to professionals from other parts of the world and facilitate the possibility of future contracting of shows or even future coproductions. Last year’s experience was very positive and first-rate institutions participated, such as the Festival d’Avignon, the Wiener Festwochende or Berlin’s Foreign Affairs Festival. This year, for the first time, there will be performances of shows planned only for professionals. This small programme will include a session of El Policia de las ratas, directed by Àlex Rigola, and work in progress presentations of the next projects by Xavi Bobés/Playground, Pere Faura and Blaï Mateu, with the show that he will premiere in 2015. 012

PRESS KIT Festival presentation Internationalisation of Catalan artists Temporada Alta is trying to participate in all types of projects that mayhelp Catalan artists to break onto the international scene. This year, Temporada Altais participating in the coproduction of two shows by Catalan artists in which international institutions are involved. This is a mechanism that we believe helps artists to break into the international marketand it is one of the lines that we wanted to continue supporting if the circumstances allowed it. The shows are RE-Presentació: Númax, by Roger Bernat and coproduced amongst others, with the FRAC Basse Normandie of Caen and El policía de las ratas, directed by Àlex Rigola and created and premiered with the collaboration of La Biennale di Venezia. Furthermore, at the festival, two more productions by Catalan artists will be presented in which international institutions will participate in the production. This is the case for T by Jordi Galí, coproduced by CNN Rillieux-la-Papo, la Compagnie Maguy Marin and Randamde Lyon and for Stuntman by Guido Sarli/Umma Umma Dance, which is coproduced by Fienile Fluò of Bologna.

Temporada Alta en Buenos Aires/Semana Catalana en Timbre 4 This 2013 for the first time Temporada Alta has organised, with the support of theInstitut Ramon Llull, a small editionoutside its normal setting. It was a festival that with the name of Temporada Alta en Buenos Aires/Semana Catalana en Timbre 4 contributed a few works that had already been performed at Temporada Altato the prestigious Buenos Aires theatre, directed by Claudio Tocachir, an artist who has also been to the festival a few times. At this first event, three shows were presentedthat had already successfully been presented at Temporada Alta: Non Solum bySergi López, Insomni by Xavi Bobés/Playground, and Striptease by Pere Faura, along with the workshop La memoria dels objectes also contributed by Xavi Bobés and a first edition of theTorneig de Dramatúrgia Catalano-Argentí, in which the winners of the two editions of the Catalan tournament (Jordi Galceran and David Plana) faced the two Argentinian playwrights (Diego Faturos and Francisco Lumerman). At Temporada Alta, we are already working on the second edition with the intention of expanding it to other spaces and cities in the region. We believe that it is a good internationalisation tool for the companies that participate and it also establishes Temporada Alta as a bridge between European and Ibero-American theatre.

6.- MUSIC Once again, with respect to music, at Temporada Alta we will be able to enjoy great artists fromoutside Catalonia such as Melendi, who is presenting his new album Lágrimas desordenadas and the great Cuban artist Chucho Valdés with Border-free accompanied by the Afro-Cuban Messengers. The British group Morcheeba will also be participating, presenting Head up High along with the 013

PRESS KIT Festival presentation diva of West End musicals Maria Friedman, who will present a concert consisting entirely of songs by Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein under the title Lenny &Steve. In this year’s programme, Catalan musicians will also have an important and very prominent role and as such, we will be able to see the live presentations of the latest albums by Manel, Atletes, baixin de l’escenari and Batecs by Gossos. Maria Coma will present her new album, Celesta, dedicated to a new instrument that she invented and Paco Ibáñez will sing Latin American poems. Andrea Motis and Joan Chamorro, along with The new Catalan ensemble will present their new project at the festival for the first time. Furthermore, two shows with a theatre format will also form part of ourmusical programme: firstlyBestiari, the return to the festival of Cabo San Roque and secondly, the return to the festival of Operetta by Cor de Teatre, a show thatmakes opera more accessible to more working-class audiences.

7.- CINEMA For some time now, Temporada Alta has included some cinematic productions amongst its supplementary activities, but this year, for the first time and with the vocation of following this line, the programme will be including a film in its main programme. This film is Història de la meva mort, directed by Albert Serra, anartist who has already participated in Temporada Alta in his role as theatreartistand this year he is participating as a film director. It is this relationship between the two mediawhich for us is more interestingand we believe that it is a relationship that must be continued and deepened. Furthermore, in thesupplementary programmeof the festival, two films will be presented that are related to the world ofperforming arts: El cuaderno de barro directed by Isaki Lacuesta, on the presentation in Mali of the performance Paso Doble by Miquel Barceló and Josef Nadj, and Pina, a homage by Wim Wenders to the great Pina Bausch.

8.-SUPPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES As in other editions, Temporada Alta will host an extra series of activities that, without forming part of the main festivalprogramme, supplement it. This year, we are presenting the exhibition Mise en scène, organised by Bòlit Centre d’art contemporani de Girona, which includes paintings and photographs by Josep M. Oliveras, Perejaume and Javier Pérez and which will occupyvarious spaces in the city and festival: Bòlit La Rambla, the Teatre Municipal de Girona and the Auditori de Girona. 014

PRESS KIT Festival presentation Mal Pelo will present the book Swimming Horses, about the elements that make upthe imaginary part of the company. This presentation in the Cafè Llibreria Context will also include an exhibition of photographs by Jordi Bover, which will be displayed in the hall of El Canal Centre d’Arts Escèniques de Salt/Girona for the duration of the festival.

9.-THE PUBLIC For some time now, we have been creating theprogrammewith the aim of attracting a very broad publicand in order to achieve this without lowering the quality of the programme,we have continued to opt for much diversification, seeking what we have considered best for each type of audience. This year, despite a somewhat reduced budget, we have managed to present more shows, and as such, we have been able to maintain this diversification and even slightly increase it. In this manner, we can continueour strong support for the segments that we believe have more future, such as dance or new creation. For some time now, we have devoted a significant space to the future audience and in this edition,we have increased the amount of shows with the aim of covering all ages. The family shows that we have this year are: Concerts per a nadons

for children up to3 years of age

Consonant

for children from 3 to 6 years of age

Constelaciones

for children of 4 years of age and older

Orelles de xocolata

for children from 5 to 11 years of age

K.O.L. 1714

for children of 6 years of age and older

Kafka i la nina viatgera

for children from 7 to 12 years of age

Tripula

for children of 8 years of age and older

All these shows are for parents and children to see together, but also, and particularly for older children, there is a both Catalan and international programme in the festival that the whole family can see, which includes Operetta, Matx de pallassos, and even, for older children Ne m’oublie pas.

The Club Ciutat del Teatre This year, under the umbrella of the Fundació la Ciutat Invisible the Club Ciutat del Teatre was created, which aims to be not only an association of spectatorsand a new way of creating resources for stage activity, but rather, its main aim is to find a new formula for the relationship between the public, artists and those of us who make the programmes in order to make the role of the spectator less and less passive and more active and prepared. 015

The poster Josep Maria Oliveras temporada alta

festival de tardor de Catalunya. Girona - Salt

2013

This year’s Temporada Alta festival poster is as quotidianas it isintriguing. The photographer Josep Maria Oliveras only needed three elements –a seamstress’ tape measure, a fossil and a small piece of wood – to capture the spirit of Temporada Alta in a portrait. According to Oliveras, the protagonist “wants to impact and thrill with the minimum. The characterhas a dual nature: it is both an actor and an audience member.”Lastly, the piece of wood that there at the bottom of the imageis reminiscent of a platform or a table on a set. “The first thing you must ask yourself is, what does the image represent?I wanted to create an image that was at the same time powerful, fresh, fun and elegant”, the artist stressed. The other surprising element of the work is its black background: “The black is an element of mystery and surprise», the writer explained. Although Josep Maria Oliveras ensures that his portrait does not represent any comedy or tragedymask, there is another work that contains thesame playful and experimental spirit of his image: the sculpture of a female baboon with its offspring that Picasso created in 1951 using a toy carto make the head of the figure. The use of objects found in the two pieces is playful, while at the same time being more profound than is obvious at first. This year’s Temporada Alta festival poster is an exception. For the over twenty years that the festival has been running, photography has made an appearance on few occasions, despite the photographers who created the posters in 2004, 2006 and 2012 being three heavyweights of theCatalan artistic scene: Toni Catany, Joan Fontcuberta and Francesc Torres. The work by Josep Maria Oliveras is also extraordinary because he him016

PRESS KIT Festival presentation self was in charge of photographing the works that other artists such as Antoni Tàpies, Narcís Comadira, Frederic Amat and Santi Moix created for theposters of past editions of the festival. So with this assignment, Oliveras has made the leap from being observer to being centre stage. Before creating this essential portrait for the Temporada Alta festival, Oliveras had already created others, which were albeit completely different. Last year Oliveras exhibited inthe Casa de Cultura de Girona a series of portraits that he created of the sculptor Torres Monsó.While the latter played with baroque style, impact of the character he created for the posteris based on the economy of means. Whereas before he had manipulated and deformed the sculptor’s face, the man (or woman) in the festival’s poster is reminiscent of a face created by a painter with a couple of quick brush strokes. Josep Maria Oliveras has had a long career in the field of professional photography, edition andcurationof exhibitions. The poster created for the Temporada Alta festival represents themore personal aspect of his work. “For two or three years now, I have been trying not to work so much project by projectbut create a more personal work, centred on what I want to say in the context of the image”, said Oliveras. While he continues experimenting to find a language and poetry that are his own, the artist is not unaware of the reality that surrounds him. “I have the same worries as most citizens –stressed the artist –. We are experiencing very critical and painful times”. In addition to becoming the image of the Temporada Alta festival, Josep Maria Oliveras’ charactercan be seen in an exhibition at Bòlit, the contemporary art centre of Girona, next autumn. It will be accompanied by two videos by Perejaume and a video installation by Javier Pérez. “The work is envisaged to be adapted to different formats. It is only necessary to keep in mind the dimensionsand theblack background that surrounds the character”. The same black that there is in a dark theatre just before the show begins...
