STEP 1 - SUBSTRATE & PENETRATION PREPARATION

SUBSTRATE & PENETRATION PREPARATION ASPHALT BUR or GRANULATED SURFACE MODIFIED BITUMEN MEMBRANE Loose granules, dust, dirt, and asphalt particles shall be removed from the surface of the built-up roof membrane at the penetration. For gravel-surfaced BUR membranes, remove the gravel using spudding and/or power vacuuming. (Note: After removal of gravel, BUR membrane may require leveling with EZ Seal Paste as directed in "SUBSTRATE REPAIRS WITH EZ SEAL PASTE" to provide an acceptable surface for EZ Seal application.) Any blistering and ridges must be cut and patched using EZ Seal Paste or an appropriate base/ply/cap sheet overlay. EZ Seal Paste may be mixed with equal amounts of quartz silica. SMOOTH SURFACE APP-MODIFIED BITUMEN MEMBRANE Any blistering or ridges must be cut and patched using EZ Seal Paste or an appropriate base/ply/cap sheet overlay. Method 1 To promote bonding of EZ Seal directly to a smooth APP modified membrane, the membrane must be surfaced with a 0.7 - 1.2 mm quartz silica. Use a torch or hot-air welder to liquefy the top surface of the APP sheet then embed silica aggregate into the liquid asphalt. When applying EZ Seal Non-Fibered Resin, extend prepared area ¼" (3 mm) past EZ Seal Fleece in each direction to provide a resin cant termination. Method 2 When installing EZ Seal on a smooth surfaced APP, apply asphalt primer to the APP (as needed) and install (torch) a granule surfaced target sheet extending 12" past the penetration in all directions for the application of the EZ Seal. SINGLE PLY MEMBRANE (EPDM/TPO) NOTE: In any roofing membrane system adhesives must be allowed to fully cure prior to application of EZ Seal Liquid Membrane. Consult adhesive manufacturer for proper cure times. Clean and lightly abrade surfaces with a medium to fine grit sand paper or equivalent. Extend prepared area 1⁄4" (3 mm) past EZ Seal termination points. CONCRETE & MASONRY New concrete must be cured a minimum of 28 days in accordance with ACI-308, or as recommended by the concrete manufacturer.

scarifying. When applying EZ Seal Non-Fibered Resin, extend prepared area ¼" (3 mm) past EZ Seal Fleece in each direction to provide a resin cant termination. METAL Clean and abrade metals with a power grinder. When applying EZ Seal Non-Fibered Resin, extend prepared area ¼" (3 mm) past EZ Seal Fleece in each direction to provide a resin cant termination. RIGID PLASTIC Clean and lightly abrade plastic with a medium to fine grit sand paper or equivalent. When applying EZ Seal Non-Fibered Resin, extend prepared area ¼" (3 mm) past EZ Seal Fleece in each direction to provide a resin cant termination. WOOD Wood plank, timber or plywood shall be prepared as required to provide a suitable substrate for proper application of EZ Seal MMA Resin. Fill joints, knot holes, cracks, and any plywood deflection with EZ Seal Paste to provide a level substrate. EZ Seal Paste may be mixed with equal amounts of quartz silica. Prior to application of EZ Seal, cover any plywood sheathing joints with a 2" minimum duct tape. Hygroscopic building substrate, especially wood plank, timber or plywood, have higher moisture content as they absorb and release moisture to reach equilibrium moisture levels with surrounding air. EZ Seal should not be applied to damp or wet sheathing materials, but may be applied to materials with high moisture contents due to hygroscopic conditions. Determinations of moisture content and resulting bond strength should be performed regularly to determine acceptability. If poor bonding or blistering occurs, substrate will require additional drying time. UNUSUAL ROOF DECKS Attachment to other surfaces is possible. Contact Malarkey Roofing Products Technical Department at 800.283.1191 with application questions. PENETRATIONS Prepare according to appropriate instructions for surface type, as directed in substrate section on this page. When applying EZ Seal Non-Fibered Resin, extend prepared area ¼" (3 mm) past EZ Seal Fleece in each direction to provide a resin cant termination.

Concrete must be sound, dry and, before application, abrasively cleaned. Laitance must be completely removed by grinding or WWW.MALARKEYROOFING.COM • 800-545-1191

STEP 2 - SURFACE REPAIR

SUBSTRATE REPAIRS WITH EZ SEAL PASTE LEVELING, PATCHING AND REPAIRS Use EZ Seal Paste as a trowel-applied filler for vertical and horizontal repairs, as follows:

• • •

Repair damaged or deteriorated concrete Repair damaged deck or walls Smoothing or leveling of the substrate

NOTE: In any roofing membrane system adhesives must be allowed to fully cure prior to application of EZ Seal Liquid Membrane. Consult adhesive manufacturer for proper cure times. Substrate must be clean, dry, and free of loose material, including asphalt, oil, grease, contaminants, waterproofing agents, curing compounds, projections which could damage the membrane, and any other material or condition which would adversely effect bonding of EZ Seal to substrate. Apply EZ Seal primer to substrate. Refer to Always use the appropriate EZ Seal Primer prior to application of EZ Seal Paste.

Pre-mix EZ Seal Paste in its container to re-incorporate any settlement or separation. Place needed amount of Paste into separate mixing bucket. Introduce EZ Seal Catalyst to EZ Seal Paste to start polymerization process. Catalyst percentage is based on temperature and amount of EZ Seal Paste being used. See chart on pg. 11 for correct Catalyst/ Paste mix ratio. Mix only enough EZ Seal Paste to apply during pot life of EZ Seal Paste, approximately 20 minutes. Use a trowel to spread paste evenly onto the surface.

DYNAMIC CRACKS Determine that the crack is moving. Remove any previously applied filler and clean out the crack by brushing and blowing oil-free compressed air. Prime and fill crack with EZ Seal Paste. Substrate preparation requires removal of dust, dirt, asphalt, rust, and other contaminants that can interfere with adhesion of EZ Seal to the substrate.

STATIC CRACKS Determine that the crack is non-moving. Remove any previously applied filler and clean out the crack by brushing and blowing oil-free compressed air. Prime and fill crack with EZ Seal Paste. In static cracks and other leveling and patching repairs, EZ Seal Paste may be combined with an equal amount of quartz silica.

SUBSTRATE LEVELING & PATCHING Surfaces shall be primed with proper EZ Seal primer (see chart in "Priming Guidelines" section). Fill all cavities and depressions with enough EZ Seal Paste to achieve a level surface. EZ Seal Paste may be combined with an equal amount of quartz silica.

CONCRETE AND MASONRY WALLS Cracks and uneven surfacing on concrete and masonry walls should be prepared in the same manner as substrate. Soft brick or masonry and faulty mortar joints need to be repaired using proper construction practice and in accordance with federal, state and local code.

STEP 3 - SURFACE PRIMING

PRIMING GUIDELINES NOTE: In any roofing membrane system adhesives must be allowed to fully cure prior to application of EZ Seal Liquid Membrane. Consult adhesive manufacturer for proper cure times. Substrate preparation requires removal of dust, dirt, asphalt, rust, and other contaminants that can interfere with adhesion of EZ Seal to the substrate. Substrate must be dry. Substrate moisture may impede adhesion by disrupting the bonding between EZ Seal and the substrate. Refer to "SUBSTRATE & PENETRATION PREPARATION" for specific cleaning and abrading requirements. Wipe down substrate surfaces thoroughly with ethyl acetate or acetone. Apply primer when required. (All lineal edge metal requires application of EZ Seal Metal Primer. Metal abraded and not flashed on the same day may require reabrading and reapplication of EZ Seal Metal Primer.)
