2 | Extend your productivity (and have fun!) with Windows Phone 8

What’s new and cool in Windows Phone 8? The first and most obvious change in Windows Phone 8 is the beautiful new Start screen:

In addition to sizzling new colors, Windows Phone 8 introduces a third tile size so you can see more on your screen. Pick a size for each Live tile to see as much or as little info as you want. The App list is still just a flick to the left from Start. Windows Phone 8 also delights with the following new features: 

Update your phone over the air. You’re notified when an update is available. You don’t have to mess with cables or connect your phone to your PC to install the update. Just download and install it wirelessly.

Back up your apps, settings, photos, and text messages in the cloud. With Windows Phone 8, you can back up just about everything to the cloud. This makes it easy to upgrade to a new Windows Phone or to restore your stuff if your phone is lost or stolen.

Work with documents more easily with the improved Office Hub. The Office Hub has been redesigned for simpler, cleaner navigation. Email attachments now show up there automatically. The Office apps are improved too. Word has a full-screen reading mode, and when you reopen a doc, it picks up where you left off. Excel has better chart support, smoother navigation, and better cell selection. PowerPoint has new thumbnail and notes views.

Take notes with the standalone OneNote Mobile app. OneNote is a standalone app now that you can pin to Start to get to your notes in one tap. Take a note with just your voice, search the contents of notes, and get around your notebooks more easily.

Add storage. Running low on storage space? Add space for music, apps, and more or share media files if your phone has a microSD slot.

3 | Extend your productivity (and have fun!) with Windows Phone 8

Show detailed status on your Lock screen. Show detailed status, such as the sender and first line of that text or email you just got. Or check the name or phone number of the person who just tried to call you.

Access new services with your Microsoft account. Your Microsoft account replaces your Windows Live ID for access to various Microsoft services. For example, you can use your Microsoft account to use the new backup and restore service and to sync documents with SkyDrive Pro.

Share documents, pictures, and music using Bluetooth. Want to share a photo or other file with a friend who has a smartphone, laptop, or tablet? Use Bluetooth sharing. Or tap your phone against another Windows 8 Phone to share through near field communication (NFC).

Speed up your typing with the new Word Flow Keyboard. Your phone can learn your writing style and predict your sentences.

Search on a page with Internet Explorer 10 for Windows Phone. Internet Explorer 10 provides a better browsing experience and protects against iffy websites.

Let your kids go to town in the Kids corner. Your kids can play with your games, apps, music, and videos but can’t get to your important stuff like your address book, email, and so on, so they won’t be sending email to your boss!

Access your credit card information, loyalty cards, and more with Wallet. A lot of things you would normally store in your pocket can now be stored digitally in your Wallet on your phone.

This is just a partial list of new features introduced in Windows Phone 8. For more in-depth information, go to http://windowsphone.com.

Customize your new Start screen Windows Phone 8 introduces a third tile size so you can see more on your Start screen.

Pin a tile to the Start screen To pin most things to Start, tap and hold the item until the menu appears, (or tap More start. For others, you can just tap Pin

), and then tap Pin to

in the menu bar. After you pin the tiles, you can move and resize them.

Move a tile 1. Tap and hold the tile you want to move until it pops into the foreground. 2. Move the tile where you want it to go. 3. When you are done moving tiles, press the Start

button.

NOTE: If you move a tile to a spot that already has a tile, the original will be moved out of the way. If there is no empty space nearby, the other tiles will move out of the way to make room for the tile. You can keep rearranging until all your tiles are where you want them.

4 | Extend your productivity (and have fun!) with Windows Phone 8

Resize a tile 1. Tap and hold the tile. 2. Tap the Resize arrow until the tile changes to the size you want. 3. When you’re done, press the Start

button.

Unpin a tile from the Start screen 1. Tap and hold the tile you want to remove. 2. Tap Unpin

.

Sync your phone with Exchange You can set up your Windows Phone to synchronize with Outlook (Exchange) to get real-time access to your corporate email, calendar, and contacts when connected to the Internet or a wireless (Wi-Fi) network. This section shows you how to sync using the standard corporate setup and also how to sync to Office 365 (Exchange Online).

Sync your phone (standard corporate setup) 1. On the Start screen, tap the arrow at the bottom to go to Settings, and then tap email + accounts. 2. Tap add an account, and then tap Outlook. 3. Type your email address and password, and then tap Sign in. If the phone finds your account settings, your email, calendar, and contacts will be synced to your phone. 4. Type in your corporate password, and then wait while your device discovers the server and notifies you that your account has been added. NOTE: For Lync Mobile users, if this is a new Windows Phone, you will be prompted to download the Lync app from the Windows Phone Store. Tap Done. When the Lync app appears, tap Install. You will be prompted to create a Microsoft Account (Windows Live ID) if you haven't already done so. 5. When prompted, tap Set to begin the device password process. Choose a 4-digit numerical PIN, and then type it in the Password field. Then confirm it by typing it again. Tap Done. Your device should sync. NOTES:  If you previously set up a 4-digit PIN from an earlier Exchange partnership, you will not be prompted to create a new one. 

Your old PIN will remain the same. Only a hard reset will clear the device of the original PIN.

5 | Extend your productivity (and have fun!) with Windows Phone 8

Sync to Office 365 The best practice is to delete your old Outlook profile, and then recreate it. To delete your old Outlook profile: 1. Go to Settings, and then tap email + accounts. 2. Tap and hold Outlook. 3. Tap Delete. 4. To create a new Outlook profile, follow the steps listed above for a standard corporate Exchange setup.

Troubleshooting Most Exchange-related issues can be resolved by deleting and recreating the Outlook profile as described above. If you still can’t sync after deleting and recreating the profile, the issue is probably network or server-related. 

If your account is not found using this method, visit http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/how-to/wp8/people/set-up-or-delete-anemail-account and follow the instructions to manually enter your Exchange Server information.

NOTES:  Windows Phone 7.x will wipe the device after 5 incorrect PIN attempts. There is no "A1B2C3" safety feature. 

Windows Phone 8 will prompt you to enter "A1B2C3" after 4 incorrect PIN attempts. On the fifth incorrect attempt, the phone will be wiped.

The phone turns Wi-Fi off when the screen is off. This prevents push notifications.

Connect to a Wi-Fi network Wireless (Wi-Fi) functionality is built into the Windows Phone platform to connect to wireless networks. This can be very beneficial for locations where mobile operator 3G/4G service coverage is not present. IMPORTANT NOTE: Windows Phones connecting to the corporate access point network, , can only connect to Internet sites. You can also sync with Exchange using this connection. Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) prevents smartphones from utilizing internal resources (e.g. intranet sites).
