Executive Summary Myrtle Beach Primary School

Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning.

The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis.

Description of the School

Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves?

Myrtle Beach Primary houses 8 Child Development classrooms, 13 Kindergarten classrooms, 18 First Grade classrooms, 2 Cross Categorical Self-Contained Special Education classrooms, and 2 Preschool Developmental Delay Special Education classrooms which serve 3 year olds. Our school currently has 889 students. 35.21 % are white, 25.42 % are black, 29.25% are hispanic, 8.55% are two or more races, .22% are American Indian or Alaska Native, and .45% are Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.

The attendance area begins at Market Commons on the south end of Myrtle Beach and extends to the Briarcliff area on the north end and includes students who live between the Inner Coastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean.

One of the biggest challenges is our student population has the highest transient rate in the district of Horry County. Many come to the beach when the hotel rates are low and relocate when the rates go up. About a third of our school population changes with transfers in and transfers out. The staff at Myrlte Beach Primary works hard to build relationships so that the students feel included in their new classroom and school. We also are quick to respond to the new students academic needs because typically these students are not on grade level when they enroll.

Myrtle Beach Primary is a Title I school and 85% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. We receive lots of community support for our students through the Chamber of Commerce, area churches and businesses. We have a large ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages, population and it continues to increase each year. We currently have 3 ESOL Teachers and 1 Spanish Interpreter at MBP.

Our school went under a major remodel last summer which included new paint, floors, carpet, doors, furniture, etc.

School's Purpose

Provide the school's purpose statement and ancillary content such as mission, vision, values, and/or beliefs. Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students.

The mission of Myrtle Beach Primary is to inspire lifelong learners and leaders. We work toward that mission by having each student prepared fo the next grade level. Our mission and school goals are aligned with Horry County Schools mission which is to be a premier, world-class school system in which every student aquires and excellent education. Our schools will be welcoming centers organized around high-quality teaching and learning.

Myrtle Beach Primary is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the Graduate by addressing their social/emotional growth, providing challenging academic programs and a safe learning environment. We seek the involvement of our families and community in promoting these goals. Our school has implemented the Leader in Me model. The Leader in Me is a whole-school transformation model which is based on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. We infuse the 7 Habits into our curriculum, traditions, systems and the culture of Myrtle Beach Primary. At Myrtle Beach Primary we have students who are responsible, show initiative, solve problems, work as a team, and know how to set goals and meet them. Myrtle Beach Primary recently accomplished becoming a Leader in Me Lighthouse School. Lighthouse recognition comes because of the results a school is achieving and the impact it is having on staff, students, parents and the greater community.

We are proud to have received Absolute and Improvement Ratings of Excellent on our school report card as well. Our academic program emphasizes learning to read and beginning numeracy. Students receive systematic literacy instruction through the Imagine It! reading program. Our students participate in district diagnostic testing using the CIRCLE assessment in Child Development and the DIBELS Next assessment in Kindergarten and First Grade. An integral part of our program is the participation of professionals and paraprofessionals in staff development throughout the school year. At MBP we analyze data when developing programs for students and training teachers to improve student achievement.

The PTO and School Improvement Council are committed to assisting the staff in promoting a quality education for our students. Volunteers work in the school as Reading Friends, tutors and teacher/office assistants. The PTO sponsored two successful fundraisers and other family events this year. Also, students, staff, parents and the community are to be commended for their participation in helping raise money for The March of Dimes, United Way, The American Heart Association and The American Cancer Society.

Areas of Improvement: - Increase our daily student attendance: Myrtle Beach Primary has many students who are homeless and bounce from hotel to hotel. If the students miss the bus, they often do not come to school as may of our families do not have vehicles. We also have a highly transient population due the increase and decrease of hotel rates along the Grand Strand. We would like for our student attendance rate to be higher. - Increase the number of students meeting benchmark on DIBELS in 1st Grade - Increae the number of students reading at or above grade level in 1st Grade

Additional Information

Provide any additional information you would like to share with the public and community that were not prompted in the previous sections.

The Myrtle Beach cluster schools are unique in our district. The typical elementary school serves students in Child Development through fifth grade. Due to the large number of students in our attendance area, our students attend Myrtle Beach Primary School from Child Development through first grade, Myrtle Beach Elementary School for second and third grade, and then Myrtle Beach Intermediate for fourth and fifth grade. Because the students transition to a new school every two years, the three schools work diligently together to build consistency in our buildings. In order to provide consistency among the three school we combined our School Improvement Councils. We have representatives from all three buildings on our School Improvement Council, and the council works on behalf of the entire cluster.
