Fruitdale High School

Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning.

The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis.

Executive Summary Description of the School

Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves?

Fruitdale High School, which was built in 1924, is a small, rural, multi-unit school serving grades K-12. We have had additions of elementary school and middle school buildings. Fruitdale High School has been a Title I school since 1995. At FHS, approximately 75% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Enrollment for FHS for 2012-2013 is 412. The population is composed of African American, Native American, and White. The faculty is composed of 24 teachers, 1 counselor, 1 media specialist, 1 principal and 2 aides. In the elementary school, the number of teachers varies depending on need. In the middle school, there is 1 teacher per core subject. In the high school there is 1 teacher per core subject plus vocational agriculture, consumer science, and band. High school students also have the advantage of ACCESS classes. Students attending Fruitdale High School reside in many small communities in southwest Washington County. Many of the students live in households which are in the severe-need socio-economic range. The school functions as the center of community activity since the town of Fruitdale is very small. Because the school is the center of the community, there are a large number of parents and citizens who act as volunteers in every phase of the operation of the school.

School's Purpose

Provide the school's purpose statement and ancillary content such as mission, vision, values, and/or beliefs. Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students.

School's Purpose At FHS we strive to prepare or students for school, for the community, and for the world. We believe All students can learn. Teaching and learning are chief priorities for our school. Each student is a valued individual with unique intellectual, physical, asocial, and emotional needs. Students learn in different ways and should be provided with a variety of instructional approaches to support their learning. Teachers, staff, administrators, parents, students, and community members share in the responsibility of providing a safe and supportive learning environment within our school. Clear goals and high expectations for students' achievement should guide the development of the curriculum and the design of instructional strategies and learning activities. The commitment to continuous improvement is imperative to enable students to become confident self-directed, lifelong learners.

The leadership of our school helps ensure that our teaching and learning process is in line with these beliefs by providing opportunities through a multitude of programs. We are an Alabama Math, Science, & Technology Initiative (AMSTI) and Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) school. In our classrooms, we use methods such as differentiated learning and Marzano strategies to ensure that we reach all of our students on the level where they are. Our high school students have ACCESS Distance Learning available to them. We adhere to the curriculum set forth by the state Alabama. The common core standards in math were put in place in 2011-2012, and the common core standards for language arts are being introduced in 2012-2013. FHS offers academic, vocational, and computer literacy courses. The curriculum includes advanced/honor classes in mathematics, science, social studies, English, and Spanish. We are striving to prepare our students for the community and the world by using technology in every classroom. We adhere to NCLB by assuring that all SPED students are taught in regular classrooms. We also address the needs of at-risk students by offering tutoring and remediation in all subjects and AHSGE. Students who are migrant, homeless, ELL, or neglected/delinquent will be given the same educational opportunities as any other student enrolled at FHS.
