Executive Summary Moore Intermediate School

Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning.

The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis.

Description of the School

Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves?

Moore Intermediate School has an extensive history, first as a junior high school and presently as an intermediate school with close over 800 fifth and sixth grade students, which makes us unique from all the other schools in our district.

As a community, Florence has moved from a

basic agricultural region into one that attracts many large corporations due to the accessibility of travel provided by two interstates. This has increased the diversity of our student population. Our current largest employer, McLeod Hospital Systems, has increased the size of our medical community. This helps to make Florence more attractive to new businesses and residents. We are currently housed in a 155,000 square foot brand new, state of the art building located in West Florence that can accommodate up to 1200 students. Our current enrollment is 818 students. Moore 's enrollment includes 405 white students, 361 African American, 26 Asian, 16 Hispanic/Latino, 9 American Indian, and 10 two or more races. We have over 130 special education students. We are a Title I School with 52% of our students on free/reduced lunch. Our faculty consists of 4 administrators, 32 classroom teachers, 6 special education teachers, 7 related arts teachers, 1 guidance counselor, 1 behavior health counselor, 1 media specialist, and 2 assistants. Moore currently receives students from four feeder schools.

Students transition to music, art, PE, science lab, technology lab, and more over the course of several days. Students participate in many service learning projects, career counseling, drug and bullying classes and programs, and much more. Our classes are heterogeneously grouped allowing the teacher many opportunities to use differentiated instruction, cooperative learning groups, and peer instruction. Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement

Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years.

Moore has many notable achievements. We are a Palmetto Silver School and have been since the 2007-2008 school year. Our letter grade is a B! While to some these accomplishments may seem common, to a school that tests 100% of its population with 17% of students receiving special education services and 50% coming from a home where the income level is currently below the poverty rate, it's EXTRAORDINARY! We are an extra ordinary school. Daily we do extraordinary things! During the past three years Moore faculty and staff have weathered three changes in administration (retirement, moving from the area, and reassignment). The faculty, staff, and students moved into a new building created for the future Moore Middle. We've adopted components of PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) which is embedded in our Character Education Program entitled R.O.A.R.! R.O.A.R. is our school-wide expectation system for student behavior. Our challenges stem from the fact that we are a transition school. We have over 400 new students entering from four attendance zones and over 400 students leaving to enter three middle schools. We are listed as an elementary school, yet 50% of our population consists of middle school students.
