Executive Summary Swansboro High School

Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning.

The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis.

Swansboro is a quaint, rural water-way community dubbed the "Friendly City by the Sea." Swansboro High School is located on the outskirts of the Swansboro city limits. According to the 2010 census information, the total population of the town of Swansboro is 2,663. The average age of the residents is 38. The estimated household income is $53,684. Additionally, the communities of Hubert, Stella, and Midway Park also feed into Swansboro High School. We currently have 1,068 students enrolled for the 2014-1015 school year. We have 279 -9th, 282-10th, 280 -11th, and 227-12th. Our male to female ratio is 518 to 550. Our school is comprised of 78% white, 5% multi-racial, 7% black, 7% Hispanic, 1% American Indian and 1% Asian. The Exceptional Children that are served by Swansboro High School range from Intellectually Disabled to Learning Disabled and this represents 13%- 140 of the population. The Academically and Intellectually Gifted students make up 15%- 150 of the population. Approximately 40%- 424 of our population is federally connected. Swansboro High School has 26% of the student population who receive free or reduced lunch services. We have 74 certified staff members: 66 classroom teachers, 2 counselors, 2 media specialists, 1 technology facilitator, 2 assistant principals, and one principal. Of these, 8 are Nationally Board Certified and 19 hold a masters degree. The racial composition of the certified staff is 69 Caucasian, 3 Black, and 2 Hispanic. Our community challenges include the constant need for consistency in the community. The families move in and out of the area constantly. Our homeless and families in need population continuously grows with the needs of the families. While the numbers of our population continues to stay the same, the military downsizing has caused some families to leave the area but we have also seen families returning to the area on military orders.

Additional Information

Provide any additional information you would like to share with the public and community that were not prompted in the previous sections.

Our graduation rate continues to increase and stay above the states average. Our dropout rate is still decreasing despite the challenges that our students face. These rates are contributed to the concept that it takes all of us to graduate the students it is not the job of one particular person.
