EnSciMan News and Events Congratulations to Two EnSciMan International PhD Students: Recipients of 2012 Ontario Trillium Scholarships Dec. 12,, 2012 The Ontario Trillium Scholarships (OTS) were introduced in 2010 to help the best doctoral students from around the world to study in Ontario and to raise the profile and prestige of Ontario universities internationally by recruiting highly qualified individuals to the province. Trillium scholars are nominated by their graduate program based on the students’ scholarly achievements and strong research potential. To be eligible candidates must be international students enrolled in full-time doctoral studies at a university in Ontario. Successful candidates receive $40,000 annually for up to four years of study. The announcement that Ciro Lecompte and Wendy Stone, two current EnSciMan PhD candidates, have been selected to receive 2012 Ontario Trillium Scholarships was made on Tuesday, December 11. Ciro Lecompte discovered his passion for environmental studies while pursuing his bachelor degree with honours in Civil Engineering from the University of Cartagena, Colombia. After obtaining his degree, he worked for the Institute of Hydraulics and Environmental Assessment in Cartagena, Cartagena Colombia. Colombia Ciro Ciro’ss research interests brought him to Ryerson University to obtain a Master’s degree in Environmental Applied Science and Management. He has opted to continue to work with Dr. Mehrab Mehrvar as a PhD candidate. Ciro’s research focuses on evaluating wastewater treatment technologies in the meat processing sector. The assessment involves the consideration the impacts of the discharge of these wastewaters into the environment, the optimization of reactors and systems for the treatment of the wastewaters by assessing the potential energy recovery from f biological bi l i l processes, post-treatment tt t t andd disinfection di i f ti off th the effluent ffl t through th h advanced d d oxidation id ti processes (AOPs), modeling of the systems, and performing cost-effectiveness analysis. Wendy Stone comes from South Africa. Her scientific background has comprised work in both fundamental microbial ecology and in industrial microbial applications in pollution and waste treatment. Her Masters study investigated the survival of the yeast opportunistic pathogen, Candida albicans, in polluted wetlands and rivers. Another of Wendy’s projects, evaluating the potential of applying the Anammox process for nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment plants in South Africa, received the South African Society of Microbiology’s award for the best 2008 Honours research in microbiology in South Africa. Wendy is currently working with Dr. Gideon Wolfaardt to study the impact of microbial metabolism on the integrity of a Deep Geological Repository for the storage of used nuclear fuel in Canada. The Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Canada is proceeding with their Adaptive Phased Management plan to bury the significant amounts of nuclear waste generated in the country. Wendy is investigating the impact of microbial biofilms at material interfaces in the DGR facility on the integrity of the structure. Microbes have the potential to influence the structure by producing corrosive substances, increasing pressure by gas production and causing radionuclide migration. The exciting challenge involves simulating such an extreme environment in the laboratory and working with the slow growth rates likely to predominate under such anaerobic, hot, pressurized conditions.

“Special Topics” course offerings in W2013 Nov. 15, 2012 The program has the opportunity to offer two “Special Topics” courses in the Winter term, 2012. Dr. Darko Joksimovic is teaching a course entitled "Urban Water Systems" which provides an introduction to methods used for handling drinking water, wastewater and stormwater through a brief history of water management in urban areas from ancient civilizations to present day. A review of key theories from hydrology and hydraulics is followed by a presentation of models used in analyses of urban water systems. In the course, the concept of integrated urban water management is introduced using case studies and associated tools. The second course is taught by Oguz Morali. Entitled “Project Management for Environmental Professionals”, this course addresses project management from a managerial perspective and relates it to environment, particularly, waste management. Those taking the course will gain an understanding of selecting, initiating, and implementing and controlling projects. The course will pp Guest G speakers p will introduce the student to the world of follow a team-based learningg approach. waste management to support the completion of the continuing integrative class project on waste management.

EnSciMan News and Events EnSciMan Students help Enbridge Industrial Customers get Energy Savvy October 21, 2012 Usually it is the students who gain real-life experience from on-the-job training. However, this fall, Environmental and Applied Science and Management students; Miguel Ayala (PhD candidate), Meghan Schlitt and Hossein Seraj (MASc candidates) will be teaching Greater Toronto Area industrial customers a valuable real-life skill: how to be more energy efficient. These students will visit small- and medium-sized industrial customers to carry out a free energy assessment to help owners find ways to save energy and improve their natural gas efficiency. "It's a win-win situation," says Trevor Maclean, director of market development and sales for Enbridge Gas Distribution. "The business owners receive tailor-made information they can use to make informed decisions on how to reduce their natural gas consumption and implement energy efficiency programs in their operations, p , while the students receive real-world energy gy management g experience." p During their visit to each business, students will examine energy utility bills to understand how much energy is being used, and then conduct an on-site energy assessment that involves looking at everything from steam-generation systems and process-and-heat recovery applications, to space heating and ventilation. After being reviewed by their professors and an Enbridge Gas Distribution energy solutions consultant, they will then present to the business owner their assessment and recommendations for energy savings. To ensure the highest quality of work, students receive specialized training from Enbridge'ss energy management experts in energy assessment procedures, Enbridge procedures energy management tools and equipment, and most importantly, safety."

Visitor to EnSciMan: Professor Ajay B. Mathema from SchEMS (Pokara University) March 23, 2012 Professor Ajay B. Mathema, Executive Director in the School of Environmental Science and Management (SchEMS) in Kathmandu, Nepal visited Ryerson University today as a first step in developing a relationship between his School and EnSciMan. SchEMS, which is associated with Pokhara University, was officially established in January 1999 and now offers four-year BSc and two-year MSc programs in Environmental Management. SchEMS also incorporates SchEMS Research and Development, an environmental service centre founded to provide environmental management services and consulting to external clients and to facilitate research in sustainable development— SchEMS R&D has a developed a strong reputation of providing independent environmental research in Nepal. It is anticipated that the next few months will be used to develop a formal Memorandum of Understanding linking EnSciMan and SchEMS in a series of educational and research initiatives.
