Happy 2017 to everyone! I hope everyone had a great time over winter break and had opportunities to reconnect with family and friends. It is these times that mean the most! Due to our wintery weather, we will have more traffic during our arrival and dismissal times. I would like to remind parents of some of our arrival and dismissal procedures that will help make arrival and dismissal safe for our students.
The speed limit is 20 mph. Cell phone use is prohibited by law in a school zone. You may only drop off and pick up at the designated safe loading zone on Elm Street. Do not pull around waiting cars and pass on the left. You cannot drop off or pick up your students on Highland between Oak and Geneva or on Elm Street west of Highland. Please do not idle your car in the drop off/pick up lane for long periods of time. This creates a lot of air pollution for our students, our staff, and our community. Thank you in advance for being conscious of the air quality around our school community. No car traffic is allowed on Highland Avenue from Oak to Geneva during arrival and dismissal time so that our buses can enter and exit the site safely. We ask that parents access Elm Street by turning on Euclid or Pleasant. When crossing Elm Street, please cross only at the crosswalks. Only Early Childhood parents may be in the pick up line between 3:00 – 3:20 PM. K-5 parents who are picking up students should not be in the pick up line until after 3:20 PM. No students are marked tardy on days when our car line is lengthy.
Please know that we take the safety of your children very seriously and will do all that we can to keep them safe when they are in our care. We ask that you partner with us to provide safe arrival and dismissal for all! Please know that you may call us at any time if you have a comment, a suggestion, or a concern. My e-mail address is
[email protected] and my phone number is (630) 534-7350. Please let me know how my staff and I can be of assistance to you and your family. Mary Hornacek Principal

PBL Update The 5th graders recently completed a PBL with the purpose of increasing good sportsmanship within the Forest Glen community. The solutions focused on PE classes, recess, park district events, Ackerman Fitness Center, and even the classroom. The students received expert feedback from local umpires, a Glenbard West coach, and Ackerman’s Assistant Facility Manager. Students will be presenting some of their solutions to Mrs. Hornacek and plan to work with Ackerman in the future.

5Essentials Survey Dear District 41 Parents, Along with other school districts across the state, District 41 is participating in the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. All District 41 teachers, parents and students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades are being asked to participate. Please note: Prior to surveying the students, a letter with more details will be sent to parents of the students who will be asked to take the survey. The Parent Survey How you feel about your child’s education is important to us. We want to gather this information in order to better understand each specific school community. We need at least 20 percent of parents to complete this survey in order to receive a parent survey results report. The survey is open and will remain open through January 16, 2017.
To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the PARENT survey to begin.
Your identity is not shared with District 41 and survey responses will be kept confidential. About 5Essentials On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, UChicago Impact administers the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is based on the Five Essentials for School Success, an evidence-based framework developed by the University of Chicago. This framework identifies how school performance on five factors or “essentials” can lead to important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. The 5Essentials are: Effective Leaders Collaborative Teachers Involved Families Supportive Environment Ambitious Instruction For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, please visit https://illinois.5essentials.org. If you have any questions or concerns about the survey, please contact 5Essentials Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or
