Winter 2005

A Happy And Healthy New Year To All Our Members As we start 2005 I can’t believe how fast this past year went by. It has been a whirlwind experience serving as President of the Emerald Society. The events that we hold seem to just keep coming. As we finish one event we are already working on the next. This is a busy time of year for the Board of Officers and our members as well. St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner. I am glad to announce that we will be holding our Post Parade Celebration at Pier 88 again this year. Before we get to that great day, we will be working hard on the Annual Winter Weekend, which is sold out. We will have close to one thousand people at the Nevele Grande for a fun filled weekend. The Annual Dinner Dance will be held the following week, after the Nevele, on February 25th. We are proud to honor our own Monsignor Martin Geraghty as our 2005 Irishmen of the year. As you know Monsignor Geraghty is our Chaplain and well respected Pastor of St. Francis DeSales Church in Rockaway. If you plan on attending the dinner please reserve your seats as soon as possible. I am sure this night will be memorable to all who attend. On January 20. 2005, I had the one the most memorable experiences of my life. I was invited by the Pipe Band to march with them in the President’s Inauguration parade. The feeling of pride was overwhelming as we marched in honor of our President, George W. Bush. As we approached the President’s Reviewing Stand, in front of the White House, I noticed all the people in their seats. An announcement was made that the Pipes and Drum’s of the NYPD Emerald was approaching. They all rose to their feet and moved to the front of the reviewing stand. It was at this time that the president started waiving to us. Since we were marching it would be inappropriate to wave back. The President seemed to sense this and gave us the thumbs up as I flashed a big Irish Smile back in his direction. I say Thank You to Brian Coughlin and “The Band” for allowing me to participate in this historical event. Our 2005 Membership Drive and Annual Raffle has started. I urge all our members to send their returns as soon as possible. This newsletter has arrived a little late in the month. I wanted to make sure that we secured the Pier for St. Patrick’s Day before sending the newsletter out. I apologize if anyone has been waiting to get his or her 2005 Membership. I assure you your application will be processed immediately, when received, and your card will be mailed back to you. If anyone experiences a problem with receiving your membership card please call me at (212) 987-3855. It is the success of our Membership Drive and Annul Raffle that has enabled us to increase the amount of monies that is given out in our Scholarship Program. Please Support the Society and the Children of our Members. Wishing You All The Best, Mike Murphy
