BRASC – Annual Report 2014

Introduction The Brasilia Student Chapter (BraSC) was founded in 2011 accomplishing various activities since then the chapter have arranged short-courses, meetings, lectures and field trips as well as a Brazilian symposium. BraSC has the support of University of Brasilia and an academic sponsor in addition to cooperation between industry and academy. International collaboration has been reached in past years in the form of exchanged field trips between Bogota, Lima and Brasilia Student Chapters.

Summary of activities Throughout 2014 Brasilia’s Student Chapter participated in the organization of two lectures, one short-course and one field trip exchange in Brazilian soil. The group also went to one national symposium of mineral exploration (Simexmin). These activities are described as follow:  Lectures in the Geology Department of University of Brasilia, ministered by Prof. Dr. Carlos José Alvarenga and Prof. Dr. Reinhardt A. Fuck. Both contemplating the geological context of the Brasilia Fold Belt.

 Short-course on modeling software Leapfrog Geo ministered by an employee of the company for student chapter associates in cooperation with University of Brasilia which assigned the laboratory and materials necessary for the course. All costs were paid by the university.  Simexmin is a Brazilian symposium that incentives the expansion of the mining sector. In 2014 five BraSC members were able to participate in the symposium. Registration taxes were given by ADIMB (Brazilian agency for mineral exploration development). During the symposium, other Brazilian student chapters had the chance to disclose SEG activities to all the participants.

 BraSC also organized a field trip involving our student chapter and Lima’s (UNMSM – Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos) consisting of 9 days of visits in six mining sites of two Brazilian states.

It was a total of twelve Peruvian students and four BraSC members. The objective was to promote integration between the two student chapters also straightening the relation among academy and industry. Field trip schedule is presented as follow:
