Newsletter 14 16th December 2016 The Collaboration Carol Service at Romsey Abbey The Collaboration Carol Service took place last week at Romsey Abbey. Children from across the three schools came together for a Christmas Service comprising of readings and choral music. There was overwhelming positive feedback from all who came, about the high standard of the children’s contribution. Many thanks to all who came and supported us. The collection at the end of the evening will be donated to Romsey Young Carers.

Indoor Athletics Competition Twenty four of our amazing Wellow athletes, competed in the Romsey Schools Indoor Athletics Festival last Friday. They began the afternoon taking part in field events, including chest throw, speed bounce, standing long jump, triple jump and vertical jump. The second part of the afternoon consisted of the running events, including relays. The atmosphere was electric, with children cheering (very loudly!) for their team mates as they raced over one, two or three laps. Many of the Wellow team came first or second in their individual races and the relays. The year 3/4 team came a superb second place (only 3 points behind the winners!), receiving silver medals. The year 5/6 team were fantastic and came fifth. Overall Wellow School were 3rd! A massive well done to all the children – you were awesome! 1

Newsletter 14 16th December 2016 Lantern Parade The children in year 3 worked with a teacher and students from Mountbatten School to create the willow lantern structures during a morning workshop. The children then collaborated to design and decorated them to look like fish. The children put in lots of effort to develop their sculpture and collage skills in Art and created some fantastic colourful lanterns. The children were enthusiastic and proudly carried their lanterns in the parade. Parents, families and staff shared in this spectacular local event, helping to develop the children’s Social development as part of the wider community.

St Margaret’s Christmas Service On Tuesday 13th December the whole school walked to church. Despite the drizzle and mud the children walked cheerfully with others from different year groups and with parent helpers to attend the special school Christmas Service at St Margaret’s Church. The children proudly read the Christian story of Christmas and displayed the beautiful handmade wooden Nativity set as carols were sung. The vicar talked about ‘giving’ and ‘thinking of others less fortunate’, drawing the children’s attention to the diverse display of Christmas trees created by local charity groups. It was a lovely morning, strengthening links with the local community and the school Nativity set will continue to decorate the church throughout the Christmas period.

Cornet Concert Year 3 have been learning to play the cornet with their brilliant teacher from Hampshire Music Service, Mrs Newman. On Monday they gave a fantastic performance to showcase their new musical skills to the whole school and parents. They have worked hard and put in so much effort each week. This shone through in their fantastic and tuneful concert.

Christmas Parties – Thank You Thank you for all the donations of food for the children’s Christmas parties this week. The children had a wonderful time playing party games, dancing and celebrating Christmas!

Praise from a Past Pupil! We have recently received an email from a past pupil that we would like to share with you; It’s always lovely to hear that we play an important role in the lives of the children that attend Wellow School.

My name is Javi and I left Wellow in the summer of 2007. I have no idea if any of the staff who were there when I was still at Wellow are still with you today, but I recently on the off chance looked up my old classmates to see what they were all up to. I know primary schools don't really have statistics on their students after they reach a certain age, but here's one for you. 26 of the students in my year group/class are now at university. 26! And of the ones who aren't, one is now a chef, one a graphic designer, one in the navy, to name a few. 3

Newsletter 14 16th December 2016 Essentially, Wellow School has clearly done something very right for all of us when setting us up for life in the early stages of education, so I'm sure I speak on behalf of all of my former classmates when I say thank you for providing such a fantastic learning environment during my primary years, and I'm sure the next generation are being prepared equally as well today.
