In nursery this week we have been reading stories about the seaside. We have used excellent listening skills and have talked about the characters, events and settings of stories. We have been adding two groups of shells together to find the total number and have been matching numbers 1-20 using buckets and spades. We have also been making starfish and gluing Cheerios on the tentacles. We have been practising our cutting skills using scissors to cut around 2D shapes. Please could you continue to support the children in writing their names independently, in preparation for moving into Reception next year. Nursery finishes on Monday the 18th July. If you haven’t booked and paid for the Nursery Fun day on the 19th July then your last day is Monday for both Morning and Afternoon sessions.

Maple and Beech News (Reception) This week we have continued to focus upon the seaside. We have read a range of books linked to the seaside in preparation for our visit to Mudeford Beach next week. This led on to us talking about what we might do and what we might see during our visit which we are very much looking forward to! In maths we have been learning about money. We began by reviewing our knowledge of the coin names and values. Once we were confident with our coin recognition, we moved on to adding sets of coins together to make different totals. We were able to then apply our understanding of money in the role-play areas we have. Currently, we have a seaside souvenir shop in Beech and an ice-cream van in Maple. This week we also had our whole school move up day which gave us the opportunity to visit the classroom we will be in next year.

Birch and Willow (Year 1) In Literacy this week we have been completing a weather diary. We have gone outside each day to record what we can see and hear regarding the weather. The children have enjoyed looking at different types of clouds and trying to identify them in their diaries. Please can you help the children to complete their weather diaries at home this weekend and return them on Monday. We have been recapping on 2D and 3D shapes and their properties this week in maths. Ask the children to name and describe the 2D and 3D shapes around your home. In Art we have looked at a different artist, Berndnaut Smilde, and how he created a cloud indoors. We recreated our own indoor clouds by taking photos of clouds during the week and sticking them to an indoor background that we have drawn. In Geography we have been looking at aerial photos. We looked at the aerial photo of our school and then drew our own aerial picture of the school.

Hazel and Rowan News (Year 2) This week, Year 2 have been busy writing Acrostic poems, and improving their own versions of The Owl and the Pussycat as they type them up on the computer. In maths, the children have been improving their work and solving word problems involving the duration of time. As part of their independent learning, the children have also been researching pirates and pirate life using non-fiction texts and the internet. On Tuesday, everyone had an enjoyable time visiting Garlands School for an afternoon of sports games outside with Year 5. Although they were very excited, Year 2 listened to the older children’s instructions well, and were all on their best behaviour. Year 2 have also been rehearsing hard for their Leaver’s assembly next week and are looking forward to sharing it with you. Year Two Fun Day is Monday 18th July. Children should come dressed in shorts with tshirts with a change of clothing and a small named towel – they will be getting wet! Children can bring water pistols which again should be clearly named. We will have paddling pools and games and provide ice pops and cakes. Children can bring their own packed lunch or the school will provide the standard school packed lunch of cheese roll and fruit. You can book your child a packed lunch via the Surveymonkey link sent out to you all, which is shown below.

Forest School Caterpillars Nursery AM and PM – Monday 4th July Both morning and afternoon Caterpillars had lovely sessions in the woods. We set up the hammock to make a relaxing area. Most children had a go in it and had fun pretending to be a caterpillar in their cocoon, emerging as a butterfly. The children worked hard building a fire circle and had a go at sawing of some of the smaller branches. The mud kitchen was also well used. At the end of both sessions we practised our fire safety routines, ready for our marshmallow toasting next week (weather dependant). The children then sat and had a drink and snack. Pheasants and Magpies – Friday 1st July The Forest School groups from Birch and Willow both went to the woods in the morning last Friday with lots of adult helpers :-) Many of the children (and adults) were fascinated with "Hapa Zome" - Using a hammer to hit plants that are on material which makes a lovely pattern. We also had some great bug hunting and free play. Don't forget the last session for this school year will be 15th July which is an extended session. We will have a fire and eat lunch together in the woods. PLEASE VOLUNTEER TO HELP WITH FOREST SCHOOL - YOU WILL HELP CHILDREN TO HAVE A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE. Heidi Evans.

Woodwork Club – Monday 4th July This week the children were busy putting all their skills to good use, sawing, hammering and using the drill. They all made some amazing creations. Next week we will be using the wood burning tool. All the children were well behaved and listened well to all the instructions...Well done.
