Eko Nugroho These eccentric figures are some of those unique to Eko Nugroho, an artist born in Yogyakarta in 1977. He was a part of the 2000s generation whose creations grew and developed in the midst of all forms of popular culture, and are able to manifest this in a variety of media, such as murals, embroidery, comics, animation, video installation, graffiti and shadow puppets. His work is loaded with the nuance of comics. In 2000, Eko was the founder of the comic Daging Tumbuh, an independent comic media that functions as a workspace for whoever wants to make their own comics. With human figures that appear to be a combination of men and machines, hose hands and heads, pipes, scissor, Eko’s humans have varied heads, cardboard boxes, astronauts, clouds, sticks and more. These figures are depicted with heavy outlines and dark colours; sometimes they are even monochrome. Eko’s strange looking characters often seem to reveal how their oddities are in the roles of humans playing out in the world. The world is like a stage for all these eccentricities, and Eko is recording them. Through his work, Eko seems to regard reality with irony. Through the characters that he creates Eko also addresses broader issues, such as the many binary oppositions that we face each day: people tend to see black and white, as if there are no other options. His work makes us aware of the true surreality of life. Precisely as we claim a realistic life, we encounter countless forms of life that are surreal. Since his first solo exhibition, Bercerobong, at Cemeti Art House in 2002, Eko began to be known in the international world as one of the Indonesia’s young contemporary artists. A number of his works were chosen to become textile designs for Louis Vuitton.
