Lunchtime Readings: Making Their Debut

The Festival provides opportunity and enjoyment

including photographic books, travel writing, food writing and graphic novels and caters to all steps on the journey from initial creation to final published text. I’m delighted that my Department can continue to support this Festival, even more so now given Dublin’s designation as an UNESCO City of Literature. The Festival offers a rich programme of events and is a source of enjoyment, information, support and inspiration for all participants. Through the exchange of views, ideology, experience and expertise, the Festival enriches the community of authors, playwrights, poets, journalists and readers alike. I want to wish the organisers every success with the event and to thank them for adding their own thread to the tapestry of Irish literature and the arts.

Children’s Books in media

Come Celebrate Launch of Look Into the Eye by Jennifer Barrett

IN ASSOCIATION WITH CHILDREN’S BOOKS IRELAND

Boys’ School, Smock Alley Theatre 5.30pm • Free entry

When it comes to children’s books, a market that is expanding while others contract, it would appear that while books are being enthusiastically read, the media is yet to embrace celebrating young readers and the books they enjoy. In association with Inis Magazine and Children’s Books Ireland, join panelists Eithne Shortall (Sunday Times), Tadhg Mac Dhonnagáin (Futa Fata), David O’Callaghan (Eason) and Conor Hackett (Hackett Flynn Publishers Agency) for a discussion on the future of children’s books, reviewing and where children’s literature belongs in new and traditional media. Chaired by Dr. Pádraic Whyte.

15

Black Box, Smock Alley Every year, around the world the Day of the Imprisoned Writer celebrates and supports writers who resist repression of the basic human right to freedom of expression and who stand up to attacks made against their right to impart information and insight. On 15 November Theo Dorgan, poet and prose writer, and Shona Murray, broadcaster, will read from the work of writers based around the world who have been targeted because they had the courage to speak their minds, challenging injustice and confronting governments and oppressive regimes far afield and closer to home.

Where do children’s books belong in the press?

What constitutes the “perfect woman”? And more importantly, does she even exist? The Irish Times journalist Róisín Ingle will discuss the mythical “perfect woman” with Emily Hourican, regular contributor to the Sunday Independent and Image magazine and author of the memoir How to (Really) be a Mother and Emma Hannigan, author of Keeping Mum, Talk to the Head Scarf and her latest, Perfect Wives. Bookings can be made from 23rd October 2013

Boys’ School, Smock Alley Theatre 3.00pm – 4.00pm • Free entry

How does one write about the past? The challenge is bringing history to life, making the characters jump off the page and not getting too tangled in research. Find out how to tackle these challenges with authors Brian Cregan (Parnell: A Novel), Colin Murphy (The Priest Hunters and Boycott) and Máire Kennedy, Divisional Librarian in charge of Special Collections, early printed books and manuscripts, Dublin City Library and Archives and author (The History of the Irish Book, volume III and The Irish Book in English 1550–1800).

Two love stories, one book. Patrick McCabe is the author of The Butcher Boy and Breakfast on Pluto – both of which were shortlisted for the Booker Prize and made into films by Neil Jordan – and Winterwood, which was awarded the 2006 Hughes & Hughes/Irish Independent Irish Novel of the Year award. Writer and editor (The Irish Times, Cara, 101 Irish Records You Must Hear Before You Die) Tony Clayton-Lea will talk with the author about his new book, Hello Mr Bones/ Goodbye Mr Rat, two hellraising short novels in one flip-over volume.
