Welcome from Heather Humphreys TD In Dublin , the shorter days and longer dark evenings of November will be illuminated once again this year during the Dublin Book Festival running from 10 – 13 November with 4 Days of Readings, Public Interviews, Debates, Book Launches and Workshops. The Festival, organised by a voluntary committee composed of practitioners within the literary community together with Julianne Mooney, promises to build on the previous successful years. A broad range of events are once again on offer and you can choose to mingle with authors, publishers and book lovers in The Winter Garden replete with café, adult reading area and bookshop, or take the younger family members to the children’s area. Most events will take place in Smock Alley, Temple Bar as well as satellite venues around the city including, The Gutter Bookshop, Irish Writers Centre, National Library, Fighting Words and Dublin City Public Libraries. The Dublin Book Festival has something for everyone and the vast majority of the events are free, making for a fun, affordable day out for all age groups. It is one of Dublin’s largest book festivals and celebrates Irish published authors and Irish publishing, across a whole range of genres. In this the 100th commemorative year of 1916 we can appreciate how Irish writers and artists have, over the last century, consistently engaged with their society, their political sphere and their landscape to create work that reflects, explains and, in some cases, predicts the direction of Irish life. The Dublin Book Festival 2016 will cover it all from politics and literary fiction, business, comedy and children’s literature, to poetry and Irish language events. I would encourage everyone to come and join in the conversations which will take place in what will be a literary delight for booklovers from Dublin and further afield.
Heather Humphreys TD Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.
Festival Information Dublin Book Festival Bookshop Visit our festival bookshop, open from 11 – 13 November, which will have titles from over 60 Irish publishers and a reading area where you can enjoy a cup of tea and browse our books. 7.00pm – 8.00pm • €10/€8 Concession
Spend an animated evening with rtÉ Radio 1’s Arena cultural guru Seán Rocks and two guests; English-born (but Declan Wicklow-dwelling) John Boorman, a filmmaker best known Power for his feature films Deliverance, Hope and Glory, The General, Queen and Country and more. The Oscar-nominated director’s Seán debut novel Crime of Passion (Liberties Press) is a strangely Rocks uplifting black comedy about a fictional director recovering from a failed movie. Boorman was originally approached to write a book about how to make a successful film. He started doing so – but the result struck him as dull and technical. He decided to tell the story another way: in the form of a novel. The cinematic book is the result, proving solid storytelling transcends all mediums. Also joining Seán is Declan Power author of Siege at Jadotville (Maverick House), a captivating military account of Irish troops’ heroism against-all-odds in the Congo. Declan discusses the genesis of his book, and its recent adaptation to film.
Irish Writers Centre, Parnell Square
10.30am – 1.30pm • €20/€18 IWC Members Nonfiction has to stick to the facts. But it also has to engage the imaginations and emotions of readers as thoroughly as fiction does. In this masterclass, author Fintan O’Toole and Irish Times columnist Fintan O’Toole will show participants how to navigate a way between these contradictory demands. How do you decide what to leave out? How do you give readers some of the pleasures of fiction without betraying the truth of the story? How do you project your own personality onto the page without making it all about yourself? How do you find a tone and a style appropriate to the subject? Fintan O’Toole is a columnist with The Irish Times and teaches at Princeton. His many books include works of biography, history, criticism and political polemic. bOOKinGs : www.irishwriterscentre.ie

Dublin Strolls: Dublin’s Architectural Treasures With Audrey and Gregory Bracken
12
Dublin’s long history has had a visible impact on its architecture: waves of invaders - and the attempts by Dubliners to shake them off - have left their mark. The 1916 Easter Rising, for example, left whole parts of the city in ruins. It was not all strife, however: the Georgian era saw gracious streets and squares laid out in the centre of Dublin city. Join Audrey and Gregory Bracken on a stroll through Dublin’s architectural treasures to get a fresh view of buildings you’ve walked past hundreds of times. Please arrive 10 minutes before departure time.

Before Panti Bliss and Miss Candy, Alan Amsby a.k.a. Mr Pussy blazed a trail across 1970s Catholic Ireland with his outrageous alter ego, demolishing homophobic barriers Mr Pussy from Belfast to Baltimore. He began performing his own show – modelling as a woman in Carnaby Street at the height of the Swinging Sixties. Ringo was a fan, and London was shocked (and pleasantly surprised) when it was revealed that the pretty young Sandy Shaw lookalike on the city’s billboards was a bloke. Lauded as being the first to introduce drag to Ireland, Mr Pussy is still selling out shows across the country. Alan will be joined by author and journalist Dave kenny to discuss The Life and Times of Mr. Pussy (New Island Books), a collection of hilarious anecdotes and celebrity tales, tracing the remarkable story of a ground-breaking and boundary-pushing entertainer, full of pathos, charm and wit.
