GREETINGS FROM THE OKANAGAN SQUARE & ROUND DANCE ASSOCIATION Spring has sprung, rose bushes budding, daffodils growing nicely (ready for the Deer to feast on) and more sunshine, at least in sunny SOUTHERN Okanagan. Congratulations to Westsyde Squares on their very successful marketing campaign for recruiting new dancers to the West Coast dance program. There was a major investment in volunteer time by the club marketing personnel. On Saturday February 20th. The Round Dance Workshop for levels 3 & 4 focusing on Rhumba & Cha was very successful. The workshop was held in West Kelowna,17 dancers in attendance. This event was sponsored by the OSRDA with Stella & Peter Tennant as the Workshop Cuers. There is another Workshop for planned for Saturday February 28th. from 2 – 4 PM at West Kelowna Sr. Centre for levels 3 & 4 focusing on Waltz & Fox Trot, fee $7 per pers. Stella & Peter will be the Workshop Cuers. There will also be a Round Dance that evening from 7 – 9 PM highlighting the moves from the two Workshops. The fee will be $7 per pers. Come on out and freshen up your Round Dance skills. I again want to remind the members of the OSRDA, that when you have suggestions, ideas, complaints, address whatever it might be, with your club representatives so that it can be taken up with the committee as a whole. See you on the floor. Bill Morey, President OSRDA.

The Okanagan Square & Round Dance Association’s next meeting will be held at 12—2 pm on April 24, 2016 Westbank Senior’s Centre

Just a reminder: We do not charge for submitted articles pertaining to square, round, contra, clogging, line dancing or other associated forms of dance. We will also accept articles of interest to our dancers and readers.

T-SS&RDA From the President March 2016

I noticed in BC Federation President Ken Crisp’s newsletter o December 28, 2015 that there are 1,863 registered Dancers in this Province plus 95 Callers/Cuers and Leaders. Of those 180 + are from Region 9 plus 8 Callers and Cuers (this does not include the novice Callers/Cuers).

In my last report I mentioned the need to seriously look at some alternative teaching methods for new dancer classes. Two of the most successful programs are the Westcoast 10 week program and the 12 week Callerlab 12 week program.

Just three years ago there was something over 2200 dancers and 220 + in Region 9. Ken’s newsletter also made note of a Provincial Mini-Festival being arranged for 2017. July 6 to 8 2017, in Cloverdale. Registration forms are available at http:/bcfestival2017.

It also appears that in order to attract new dancers we may have to look at paid advertising. Paid advertising has helped clubs in Region 3 get new dancers.

Work is continuing on the new BC Federation webpage www.squaredance.bc.ca. some of this site is up and running but is not complete. The BC federation Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for April 2, 2016 in Abbotsford. Bill and Jean Wood and Allan and Lexi Ebl will attended as the elected delegates from Region 9. Merv and Sandy Meyer (alternate delegates) will also attend.

For example Kelowna’s Westsyde Squares have published newspaper display ads for a Fall New Dancer Session beginning in September 2015 and a Winter New Dancer Session beginning in January 2016. They are teaching the Callerlab 12 week program and out of 18 new dancers in the fall session 11 have joined the club. They currently have another 18 enjoying the Winter session.

This promises to be a very tough session with a large number of discussion items and motions on the table. Plan to attend all of the upcoming Special Dances in Region 9. In date order they are;

Allan Peterson’s Star Country Squares new dancer class currently has 13 new dancers. Allan is teaching the full mainstream program.

The 33rd Annual “Easter Bunny Hop”, Monday March 28, 2016 featuring Caller/Cuer Murray Few of Edmonton, AB .

Food for thought?

Presented by the Ta’Lana Twirlers. This year has a new event – an afternoon Plus Dance

The BC Square and Round Dance Federation Revitalization Committee has produced a full colour 3 panel promotional brochure plus a “rack card”. These items are designed to promote square dancing and are available through the Federation. Each Club should have a supply to hand out. I have ordered 120 copies of each and will distribute to the Region 9 Clubs. The Well Rounded Square

Dance into spring with the 17th Annual “Buttercup Ball” presented by the Gold Classic Dancers Round Dance Club. This event has a Pot Luck Dinner prior to the Dance and also features a panel of Cuers. “Mayfest 2016”, Saturday May 7, 2016, re17

turns to Kamloops where it all began 30 something years ago. This may be the last Mayfest. Featured Caller is Steve Edlund of Surrey B.C and featured Cuer is Mariann Sanford of Blind Bay, BC.

A Huge Thank You to the Okanagan Square & Round Dance Association

The program includes a Plus Dance with Rounds, possibly an “A” level dance (if the interest is there), a potluck supper and an evening mainstream with Rouinds.

We would like to like to express our gratitude for your thoughtfulness and your generous assistance to help defray the costs of publishing the Well Rounded Square.

For the second year Region 9 presents “Chase the Fun” to be held in Chase BC on June 17, 18 & 19, 2016. This event is schedule includes a Friday night mainstream and round dance hosted by a panel of callers and cuers. Saturday will have a morning round dance and afternoon mainstream workshop and plus dancing with rounds.

Bill & Jean Wood Editors GOLD CLASSIC DANCERS We started out the New Year on January 5th. Some of our dancers are Snow Birds so we are missing a few.

The main event – the Saturday night Mainstream dance will see the return of our first year stars : Caller Steve Edlund and Cuers Mariann Sanford and Sandy Meyer.

Gordon and Rose West-Johnson are not dancing at present as Gordon is not well. The rest of us are enjoying getting back to one of our favourite activities with Norm leading us through a variety of dances.

Sunday morning will feature a Trail out dance with a panel of callers and cuers. Another Special Event: This year Regions 3 and 9 are co-sponsoring a “Chase the Fun” Caller and Cuer School immediately following the Chase the Fun jamboree. This school will feature Caller Instructor Garry Dodds and Cuer Instructor Pat Zeeman, of Victoria BC. This program will run from Sunday evening June 19 to Friday afternoon June 24th, 2016.

We ae beginning to think of the Buttercup Ball which is usually held the last Sunday of March. However, Sunday, March 27th is Easter so the Buttercup Ball will be held on April 3rd. This dance is a Round Dance with a panel of cuers. The dances cued will be Phase II (the ones that are cued at square dancing) Waltz and Two Step with some Phase III (perhaps in other rhythms) that are requested. We start the evening off with a potluck supper. It’s a most enjoyable evening and we hope to have many of you join us.

Remember in order to have a successful year we must avoid club politics, treat everyone with courtesy and respect and most of all have FUN!! Happy Dancing and see you in a square, somewhere. Bill and Jean President Couple. The Well Rounded Square

rounds between the square dances. Thanks to Brian Elmer's promotion of round dancing and our club in the Vernon Morning Star, we had a very good response. After 3 weeks of accepting new dancers, we ended up with 11 enthusiastic new round dancers: (4 square dancers & 7 prospective square dancers).

The club has been averaging approximately three squares each week. The fist week, on January 14th, began with 21 people in part due to the snowbirds escaping the snow here. A few people have been sick - Joan Lemke has been feeling under the weather for several weeks and Gordon West-Johnson is in hospital due to complications during a medical test. Hopefully both will be feeling well again and will soon be back dancing.

Due to change in policy of the new management of Big Chief MHP, we are no longer allowed to use the Hall. Our new venue is the Halina Senior's Center in Vernon, 3310 37th Ave. We will be dancing from 1:303:30

There was a large turnout of five squares at the club’s annual Christmas party. The food and camaraderie was appreciated by all! Please note that there will be a Valentine’s dance on February 11th. The theme will be red/ pink and white followed with a scrumptious dessert. My favourite will be served - angel food cake with berries and ice cream! You are all welcome and encouraged to celebrate with us!

Sunday afternoons. Any experienced dancers who would like to improve their dancing or get more floor time are welcome to join us. Keep smiling. Peter & Stella Tennant

The Ta’Lana Twirlers enjoy having visitors at any or all of our weekly dances. Guests add to the fun!

The Ta’Lana Twirlers club is spinning and twirling to the dance music doing both Round and Square dancing,. Our beginner couple have now started dancing at the mainstream dances this new year. They tease us and say they are willing to be pushed, pulled or dragged to wherever we want the to go=:) In this new year Mariann is cueing round Dancing from 7 to 7:30. We started dancing on January 14th, a week later than usual, as Peter had cataract surgery the week prior. Mainstream is from 7:30 to 9:30 as usual with The Well Rounded Square

Sophia loves square dancing and can’t wait until she can dance too. She also says that she’s going to be a caller when she grows up. Photo courtesy of Liz Ellis 20

A convoy of over 20 or more dancers arrived in Vernon from West Kelowna. The grape vine had also reached to members from Salmon Arm, Enderby, and Penticton, who also joined in and all together created 6 Squares and then some! The Panel of Callers adjusted their music to accommodate a collection of brand new dancers previewing a makeshift Three Quarter Dance. Two guests travelling from Sechelt, BC, happily commented about the “great energy” they felt in our community dance. The Callers and Cuers included, Nelson Reeme, Allan Peterson, Mike Leach, Bob Byrne, Rene Bourget and Peter and Stella Tennant. Rene

February 2016 January 20th saw dancers from Westsyde Squares, Enderby, Penticton and Salmon Arm join us for a "six square coffee night" which was like old times! It was great to see our OSRDA President Bill Morey also Regina Anderson among the dancers. Our New Dancer class is proceeding very well with instructor Allan Peterson doing a great job. We have thirteen new dancers this year. We have recently managed to get two items into the local newspaper, one being our annal Christmas donation of ten boxes of gifs to the Transition House and the Venture Training "Life Skills", the latter which supports learning disabled adults living out in the community. February 10th will see our Goofers' NighWalentine Coffee Night. All are welcome to take part in the program just by advising Nelson Reeme of your intent.

even honoured the dancers by sharing his famous yodelling call. The evening included a table full of delicious snacks and many door prizes with the 50/50 prize totalling $36.00. Everyone attending experienced a fun and positive gathering; the energy was electric! The new dancers are anticipating the next upcoming real Three Quarter Dance which is being held in Vernon from 2:00pm to 4:30pm on February 28, 2016. The Okanagan is very fortunate to have such close connections. The possible dilemma of having to cancel a regular dance night, instead, turned into an opportunity which delighted many dancers and strengthened relationships in our Square Dance Community.

With the circumstance of missing a dance night due to a caller’s absence on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, the Westside Squares collaborated with Vernon’s Star Country Squares to draw together one sensational in Vernon, BC. The Well Rounded Square

a great success. The February 19th dance was ‘Rock and Roll’ themed and many poodle skirts, a couple of “Fonzie” leather motorcycle jackets, and in one case, a fake pack of ‘ciggies’ -- of the candy variety -stowed in a rolled-up tee-shirt sleeve –a nice touch. Alas, no ersatz Elvis’s were to be seen! The music was ‘50s/60’s Rock ‘n Roll and all were great reminders for a lot of us of that great era when we were young and foolish – well some were more foolish than others. The prez made a big effort to look like Richie Cunningham’s dad Howard – not really, no plaid kimono or cardigan sweater, better effort next time Bob.

It is with great sadness that we start this report – one of our long time members, Herb Young, passed away suddenly on January 30th, He will be very much missed at our Enderby dances. Our sincere condolences to Anne-Marie , his sons, daughter, brother, sisters and extended family. A celebration of life for Herb was held on Saturday, February 6th at the Bowers Funeral Home and Crematorium in Salmon Arm. The family have requested that any donations or support be sent to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.

March 18th is our Leprechaun Goofers’ Night so come and join us and grab the ‘mic’ out and show us your best American Idol! (Maybe that should be Canadian Idol – is that even a thing anymore?) Should be lots of fun – Enderby’s amateur hour.

Also another long-time dancer from Ta’Lana Twirlers Dancers, Gordon West-Johnson of Sorrento B.C. passed away at the Kelowna General Hospital in the ICU Palliative Care Unit early February 3rd, 2016 with family in attendance. Once again our thoughts go out to his wife Rose, his brother Stan, daughter Karen, son David, daughter-in-law Mary and his grand and great-grand-children. There will be a Celebration of Life on April 23rd, 2016, 11:00 a.m. at Fischer’s Funeral Services, 4060 1st Ave. S.W., Salmon Arm B.C.

The Last event of the year will be our Grad Bash on April 15th. Admission is free for all new dancers and each will be able to start their “dangle badge set” with a congratulatory Grad Bash dangle – so mark your calendars, grab your newly minted dancers and join us. Lastly, we encourage everyone who is interested, to attend the two OSRDA round dance workshops with Peter and Stella Tenant of Rhythm Rounds on the 20th and 27th of February (details elsewhere in The Well Rounded Square). Kudos to Rhythm Rounds and OSRDA for presenting these special workshops.

Enderby River Dancers are still dancing with two squares and our caller Allan Peterson, is teaching a plus move most Friday evenings which everyone is enjoying. Our January party night was Tropical Vacation and members and guests showed up in summer/tropical holiday attire and had a summer “stay-cation” for a couple of hours away from that white stuff which has now gone away – thankfully! The guest dancers from Penticton Squares, T’Lana Twirlers, Salmon Arm Squares and Star Country Squares, as always, helped make the event The Well Rounded Square

Remember March 12th is Spring Fling with Rick and Kathy Utter of from Idaho calling. Feature Cuer will be Mariann Sanford from T’Lana Twirlers. Mark your calendar. HAPPY DANCING from Bob and Grace Byrne (President Couple, Enderby River Dancers) 24

Keeping up with Merv & Sandy A Perfect Day for Banana Island On a beautiful Sunday morning in August, 2 kayaks, 3 canoes & 1 rowboat launched at the Pine Street boat ramp in Chase, for a leisurely 20 km ‘cruise’ down the S. Thompson River for the 13th annual ‘Banana Island Canoe Trip’. With a total of 12 dancers present, it was easy to make a ‘square’, dancing first at the beach off VLA road. Two very friendly ladies who were out for a walk, wanted to join in with us and they adapted like ‘ducks in water’. They had great fun and said they had always wanted to try square dancing. They could hardly wait to tell their husbands of their unique experience.

warm river water, more square dancing took place on Banana Island beach. Then the dancing moved into the water where Merv called ‘dive through’ lots of times, to keep the dancers cool! Happy that they had earned their ‘Aquaducks’ badge and their banana dangles, the dancers (even Doug Neustaedter’s teenage son Joseph was dancing), once again launched their boats to head for Pritchard.

The next destination was Banana Island. As the one rowboat was heavier and slower than the other watercraft and was carrying 3 people instead of just 2, Sandy & Merv Meyer headed back upstream to tow them to the Island, as the other paddlers were almost there. There was lots of fun and laughter going on with the towing!

There were especially large numbers of geese, lots of ducks, some Blue Herons, eagles, Osprey, but no bear on this trip. The water was so calm, quite often one could see large fish swimming below the boats. It was probably one of the best trips yet, as far as weather. Everyone had a wonderful time and lots of photos were captured for good memories.

Most recently, the in-class school dance program saw all the students at Kelowna Christian school enjoy 7 days of exposure to square dancing on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Teaching grades K to 5, it was a new school for the program and the students and teaching staff were very receptive.

What a great start to the New Year. The TV Stars are dancing 4 times a week: Tuesday night they have Round dance lessons in 2 Step, Waltz, Rumba and Cha from 7:00 to 9:45 pm with up to 7 couples dancing. Wednesday night the club either does a Plus teach, or a review of new dancer Mainstream. Thursday night is both new dancer lessons and Mainstream at Desert Gardens. The new dancers are near the 3/4 mark in their lessons. All of our new dancers have returned and we continue to have 3 plus squares turn out each Thursday to continue learning full mainstream. We also have several dancers who danced a few years ago coming to join in and catch up. All our mainstream dancers help with the new dancers, and then dance full mainstream from 8:30 to 9:30. Jim Flack and Marg Montalbetti are always there to help the new and not so new dancers sharpen their dancing skills and keep us moving, so much appreciated by all. The Association dances in Chase are continuing and we look forward to seeing many of these new dancers attend and gain more confidence in the skills they have learned. Friday. The Plus group dance in the afternoon in Chase with 6 or more couples dancing full Plus and phase 2 & 3 rounds, Jim Flack continues to call a tip for us in both mainstream and plus each time we get together and is doing a fantastic job of calling and having the patters move smoothly. The club certainly appreciates the time and effort he has committed to this, and we look forward to hearing more from Jim in the future. The Well Rounded Square

Family members were invited to attend a Western-themed “spirit day” that took place on the final day. Everyone, including the school’s receptionist, dressed up in western attire. Noting only benches in the school gym for visitors to sit on, a suggestion that chairs be put out was thought not to be necessary until an overwhelming number of family members arrived and the chairs were quickly brought out. The visitors attend to see their particular students at the scheduled time for their class, so some parents with several children at the school came more than once during the day. Every class session wrapped up with the students fetching their family members to come onto the dance floor and learn some calls. Comments from the parents afterward were very positive. Despite the popularity of the school program, it continues to be a challenge to establish a weekly youth group. The Johnson Bentley Memorial Aquatic Centre in West Kelowna was prepared to welcome a new youth group on January 29th but didn’t get enough registrations to allow it to proceed. They want to try again in the Fall. One of the detracting elements is that they can only offer Friday night sessions yet that’s not a popular night for activities as families begin their weekend. Families with snow skiers often head for the slopes that night. March 2016

Also, a media release about clogging prompted CBC Radio for the Southern Interior to have Lynda Colautti do an interview on the morning of Friday January 8 in their downtown Kelowna studio. It went very well. (Excerpt available) A web page for the club was hurriedly designed and activated. Hosted by the B.C. Federation, it has a base address including “Got 2 B Cloggin” in the name and a promotional referral address was established as well, being “www.KelownaClogDanceFun.info.”

On the subject of communications: The plan to design and produce an institutional brochure about the Association has met with some encouragement. One of drafts from a year ago has been located. (Samples) An e-mail inquiry was sent a week ago to the VistaPrint online publishing service to ask if they can retrieve the last draft that was designed. Their response is still pending.

Similar publicity was sought in support of the Rhythm Rounds in Vernon. Community event calendar announcements were submitted and many tweets went out on Twitter. Also, as the only singular round dance club in the province to offer January lessons, they were given some extra paid Facebook exposure under the now completed SQUAREUPB.C. internet and social media campaign. Their ad was shown on 7,301 computer screens and a total of 271 persons were curious enough to click on the ad for more information.

One element for the brochure that we’ll have to decide upon is a logo to represent the Association. On the subject of marketing: It’s been a very busy couple of months supporting clubs that held new dancer sessions in January, particularly Got 2 B Cloggin, the Rhythm Rounds and the Westsyde Squares. The B.C. Federation’s SQUAREUPB.C. marketing initiative did run a Winter campaign that reached into our area with paid Facebook and Google AdWords advertising. Our clubs were included in that campaign and were listed on the landing page at: www.TakeMeDancing.squaredance.bc.ca.

A re-vamped web page for Rhythm Rounds was designed and launched to quickly satisfy marketing needs. Also hosted by the B.C. Federation, it has a base address including “Rhythm Rounds” in the name and a promotional referral address was activated as well, being “www.VernonRoundDanceFun.info.”

Got 2 B Cloggin got help from the Association to market the January new clog dancer sessions. For instance, the club saw free publicity in the media through community calendar event announcements and many tweets went out on Twitter.

A press release promoting the Rhythm Rounds lessons was sent to North Okanagan media and it caught the attention of Vernon’s key newspaper, The Morning Star. The arts and lifestyle editor expressed appreciation for the article and it was published with a photo, furnished by the Tennants, on page A-23 in the Sunday January 3rd edition. There’s a link to it on the club web page.

As the only clog dance club in the province to offer January lessons, they were given some extra paid Facebook and Google AdWords exposure under the now completed SQUAREUPB.C. internet and social media campaign. On Facebook, their ad was shown on 12,481 computer screens and a total of 568 persons sought more information by clicking on the ad for more information. In a smaller campaign on Google AdWords, the The Well Rounded Square

would use the headline that was submitted. In this case they added a main headline reading “Hey guys, this kind of dancing isn’t square” and kept the name Brian Elmer in the story’s byline. Several of our fellow Association members in the North Okanagan made their dissatisfaction about the title known--one in demeaning fashion.

the Saturday April 2 Board of Directors Meeting starting at 10 am. It will take place at the Abbotsford Seniors Activity Association Hall. The Federation has secured a block of rooms at the Best Western Bakerview Inn priced at $79 per night for April 1 and/or April 2. Statistics for the B.C. dance community were presented, detailing a total of 1,863 dancers and 95 leaders in 68 clubs.

Looking ahead to the possibility that all our member clubs will adopt condensed programs like West Coast Square Dancing, there’s a role that the Association can play to encourage new dancers. It’s inspired by what they’re doing on Vancouver Island. That would be to co-ordinate West Coast program dances soon after the newcomers get some lessons under their belts. Presented in various Valley cities, such dances would encourage travel, the making of new friends and, of course, how to have some special fun.

A provincial mini-Festival was announced to take place July 6 to 8 in 2017 on the Cloverdale Rodeo Grounds at Surrey. Registration forms can now be printed from the Festival’s web site at: There’s http://bcfestival2017.weebly.com/ also a Facebook page at: https:// www.facebook.com/bc.festival.2017/ .

On-site camping will be available Wednesday through Saturday nights, with electricity & shower access. The fee will be $20/night.

Early registrations are priced at $40 until September 1st for the 3-day package. Single day admissions will be available at $25 per day.

By Brian Elmer, Delegate The paid advertising campaign undertaken by the B.C. Federation’s marketing initiative, SQUAREUPB.C., saw the Facebook ads appear on 59,766 computer screens province-wide and 3,136 persons clicked on the ads to learn more. There were about 12 dance clubs around the province offering new dancer sessions in January.

Trail-in and Trail-out dances are scheduled to flank the Festival dates. The Federation’s Revitalization Committee has produced a full-colour 3-panel promotional brochure plus what’s known as a “rack card” and they’re now available for distribution (brochure sample). Committee Chair, Dennis Sutton of Sidney, welcomes clubs to determine how many of the brochures and/or rack cards they want to promote their Fall classes. He asks that orders be submitted before the Summer. Contact:

Additional advertising on Google AdWords saw the ad appear on 64,125 computer screens province-wide and 668 persons clicked on it for more information. The Communications & Marketing report details additional Federation advertising received that’s specific to our member clubs.

Work is continuing on a revitalized look for the Federation’s web site at www.squaredance.bc.ca.

tion. It was necessary for our January new dancer sessions to have a 2-week pause between our first free new dancer session on January 13 and the start of paid lessons on January 27. Using a photo of the dancers at the January 13 free night, we submitted a “photo release” to the local newspapers and other media. It had a caption reading that newcomers would still be welcome, for a fee, on January 27. One paper reproduced the photo and caption in good time for the session on the 27th. The other paper, though, shelved the information and published it 2 days after the first paid night, making it old information. It became obvious that their purpose was to make use of our submission in their special “Healthy Living” supplement of January 29th. They awkwardly re-worded our caption in an attempt to show the event as having passed.

It’s been a very busy time for the Westsyde Squares preparing for and launching a second set of 12 new dancer sessions in January. That was one the tail of having operated 12 new dancer sessions starting in September. In review, we’re running the new dancer sessions on our regular Wednesday club night. The new dancer times are 6:00 to 7:30 and the club dancers have from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. At the club session, we’re doing two round dances between square dance tips in place of the forfeiture of pre-rounds. In regard to results, the bottom line is that the Fall session attracted 18 dancers and the club had 11 of those join the club this January. The current new dancer sessions started with 26 attending the free session to wind up with 18 committed dancers. If all 29 dancers continue as club members, that’s over 3 ½ squares of newcomers. The club purchased paid advertising to promote the Fall sessions with newspaper display ads. To promote the Winter sessions, newspaper ads were utilized again but we also tried paid ads on Facebook. Of course, free publicity was sought through press releases and community event calendar submissions.

The unfortunate thing about that delayed free publicity is that it generated the interest of 3 people who we had to turn away because the paid lessons had already started. The situation only re-confirmed that you have no control over submissions made to the media when seeking free publicity. Now that final word has come from the Canadian Society about the applicable period for their free insurance coverage of new dancers, the club is gifting its registered new dancers, both from the Fall and the current sessions, with the $3 Society memberships for 2016. It was confirmed that the Society’s

Both the paid advertising and the seeking of free publicity presented challenges. The newspaper didn’t follow our contract, ending our ads too soon and neglecting the 7-day run of a paid electronic ad on their web site. They gave us a sizeable refund in compensaThe Well Rounded Square

ley is now aware of the existence of Got 2 B Cloggin. Thank you, Brian.

Our club caller wasn’t available on Wed. Jan. 20th, so a contingent of our members hit the road to enjoy a visitation trip to Star Country Squares in Vernon. Our members report being treated royally and extend many thanks to Star Country for their hospitality.

From a number of phone calls and email messages, my January beginner class started with eight potential starters. Five new dancers have been retained. Two of the new dancers are a couple who drive in from Vernon each week. The beginner classes will run until the end of March. We will have our graduation on the first Monday in April after which the dancers can choose to move up to the lower intermediate level or repeat the beginner classes.

We plan to have something to say at every club night about the OSRDA in a desire to keep all of us more informed as members. A poster has been distributed and the Westsyde Squares are committed to operating a New 2 U clothing and accessories room during Star Country’s ¾ Dance at the Halina Centre in Vernon on Sunday February 28th. We plan to open our pop-up store no later than 1:30 p.m. and operate it throughout the dance. The dance runs from 2:00 to 4:30.

We also have a new intermediate level dancer. She is an ex-tap dancer and starting clogging with Okanagan Cloggin'. Looking forward to a September beginner session, I have two people who are interested in a

Some of the cloggers wish to be there as "angels". It will run from 11am to 12:30 pm, it will be open to the public, and there will be no hopping or jumping. Invisible Thread others have a shinier, reflective finish.

Whether it is called clear, crystal, monofilament, or invisible I have a serious love-/ hate relationship with this stuff and I use a lot of it. It is like very very fine fishing line. No, you can’t use fishing line instead. Quality invisible threads are .004mm (or .0002 inches) in diameter to be exact. If it feels like fishing line or is bigger than .004mm, don’t use it. To evaluate any that you have on hand, it should feel soft and pliable, like human hair. It should blend into the fabric and break easily. Too strong and it will cut the fabric. Thicker threads will jab and scratch your skin at the end of a seam. Look for polyester invisible thread, it holds up to heat better than nylon. SulkyⓇ, SuperiorⓇ and MadeiraⓇ are some brands to look for.

I use this thread to add fishing line to petticoats to re-fluff-a-tate them. Regular thread works but invisible thread is better because you don’t have to worry about color matching. Most petticoats are made using invisible thread. For complete instructions, with pictures, of how to add fishing line to a petticoat go to www.SquareDanceSewing.com. Click on Petticoats in the menu bar and then on C.P.R. If the invisible thread is on a regular spool it should be put on a vertical spool pin so that the spool turns as the thread unwinds. The thread will not kink or twist. If the thread is on a cone it is wound for the thread to come off the top. It should be placed on a horizontal spool pin or on a thread stand. Cover the cone with a thread net. This will keep it from getting tangled both when it is on and off the machine. When not in use wrap the bobbin and spool with painter’s tape to keep them from unwinding. (That’s why I hate it, because it tends to tangle easily.)

Invisible thread works well for attaching multi-color bindings and bias tapes, and top stitching on plaids or patterns where thread color can be challenging. To apply rick-rack sew down the sides just catching the tips of each point. The rick-rack will stay flat after washing. Works well for sewing on ribbons and laces. No need to match colors. Some people sew with invisible thread all the time. Tailors use it for mending and hemming. It is used to sew on military patches.

Winding the bobbin - This type of thread stretches, so you have to be careful. Do not put the it through all of the thread guides. Start winding and feel the tension just in front of the bobbin. It should be loose. You can guide the thread with your fingers to keep it smooth. Wind at a medium speed. This will take forever. This thread is so fine that it takes twice as much to fill the bobbin. Only

It is available in clear and smoke colorations. Clear blends with most light colors and smoke with darker ones. Some brands of invisible thread have a matte finish, while The Well Rounded Square

wind the bobbin about half full. Over filling a plastic bobbin can cause it to break. (Voice of Experience)

BEE JAYS Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and everything is going well for the New Year. Hope it is treating you well. Our club has returned for the season and we so far haven’t danced yet. Had a dance last week (Jan 5th ) but didn’t get enough to dance so we had coffee and snacks and went home. Sad, but how it works sometimes. So hopefully next week will be better. This snow sure stops people from coming out.

Thread the machine as usual. Turn the tension to the lowest setting. Yes, I know, that seems backward. The thread is so fine you would think the tension would need to be increased. The tension needs to be looser to keep the thread from stretching. You can use a finer needle size 70/10. You will not be able to use your automatic needle threader with this size needle because the needle eye is too small. Color the end of the thread with a Sharpie marker to make it more visible for threading. Always test sew a sample, checking your tension settings and stitch length.

Not much new in our club. We still dance Tuesdays in St Paul’s Anglican church on Nicola Street, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. June and Bill are doing fine. Nothing major going on and June is well as can be. Still having her stone problems and weight loss but she is still doing fairly well. Was nice to see that she could make it out to both Kamloops dances. Everyone enjoyed seeing her at the dances.

Invisible thread is frequently used in quilting. Art quilters love invisible thread. There is a technique where invisible thread is in the needle and regular thread on the bobbin. The tensions are set so that the bobbin thread is pulled to the top giving the look of antique hand stitching.

Hope to see you on the dance floor at some dance around the province. Look forward o seeing you in a square soon.

It is also used in bobbin work. Where heavier embroidery thread is put in the bobbin and invisible thread in the needle. The project embroidered upside down. The embroidery thread is couched to the right side of the project. The heavier threads do not have to go through the eye of the needle. Experiment with this neat addition to your sewing box. It might be just the right thing for that next project. Sewing is a constant learning experience. Keep you eyes open for opportunities to make it easier. Solution to February’s Puzzle

IN THE MEMORY OF

SOMEONE ELSE We were saddened to learn this week of the passing of one of our members, Some-

one Else. Someone Else’s

passing created a vacancy that will be difficult to fill.

Else has been with us for many years, and did far more than a normal person’s share of the work. Whenever there was a job to do or a meeting to attend, one name was on everyone’s list: Someone Else. It was common knowledge that Someone Else was among the largest givers of our group. Whenever there was a need, everyone just assumed Someone Else would do it.

Someone Else was a wonderful person, sometimes appearing superhuman, but a person can only do so much. Were the truth known, everyone expected too much of

Someone Else. Now Else is gone. We wonder what we are going to do. Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow. But who is going to follow the things that Someone Else did? When you are asked to help, please remember, you cannot depend on Someone Else any more. The Well Rounded Square
