Accommodation

La Mamounia *****

On some days during the three years it took to restore Marrakech’s undisputed grandedame hotel, more than 1,000 craftsmen were at work on the site. Parisian designer Jacques Garcia, entrusted with returning the 1923 property to its former glory, sought out the city’s most talented painters and wood carvers. The craftsmen he chose laid millions of hand-cut tiles, pieced together wood- marquetry walls, carved ornate designs into plaster columns and forged hundreds of handmade lanterns. Thanks to them, the palace is once again a vibrant celebration of the city’s past, present and future, displaying Moroccan style, complete with intricate patterns and arabesques based on Berber and Arab- Andalusian traditions. www.mamounia.com

Optional Day1

Enjoying something of a renaissance over the past few years, Moroccan food is one of the most recognisable flavours in the world. Few other countries have national dishes so evocative of the country itself, and your cookery courses take place at La Maison Arabe in the gardens, just outside the city. You will be provided with your own workspace and will be taught the secrets of the oldest Moroccan recipes as you create an appetizer and a main dish or a main dish and dessert, which may include Tajines, pastries, salads and couscous. Your cooking workshop starts with a general introduction to Moroccan cooking, highlighting the importance of food in Moroccan society, and the role played over the centuries by the Dada –the traditional female cook. You will be introduced to the most traditional recipes such as Pastilla, Cous cous and the many Tagines, with descriptions of the ingredients and the all-important spices, and the different methods of cooking. Then you get the chance to put your new knowledge into practice, with an explanation of the recipe of the day and the ingredients that will be used. There are a maximum of 8 people per group and a translator (Arabic, English, French) provides detailed preparation and cooking instructions. After class it’s time to taste the final results!! You will enjoy the meal you have prepared in the shade of fig or olive trees by the hotel pool.

Restaurant-Dinner Time Restaurant ELYACOUT The legendary Dar Yacout restaurant is one of Marrakech’s most unforgettable dining experiences. Tucked away behind a discreet door in the medina with secret, American architect Bill Willis created the space in the 1990s. Expect mosaic floors, intricately carved cedar ceilings and towering water fountains, along with dim, candlelit interiors. Begin the experience with a pre-dinner drink on the romantic rooftop with the sultry sounds of Andalusian live music in the background, followed by a refined Moroccan banquet-style feast in a glittering grand dining room. Expect fresh salads, exquisite Tagines and an endless selection of sumptuous desserts, so its best to come with a hearty appetite.

The chef invites guests to sample classic Moroccan cuisine in one of the 6 dining rooms, or under the stars on the patio.

Day 2

Morocco Destination Ouarzazate is by all standards a different city from most Moroccan cities of its size: about 40,000 inhabitants. Its focal point is the long and wide street Avenue Muhammed V which starts before the city starts, and continue along the modern buildings, the Kasbah of Tifoultoutte, and ends after Ouarzazate ends. Ouarzazate is designed for heavy tourism, and is well established with numerous hotels of high standard, but relatively few restaurants. There is a strange and empty feeling to Ouarzazate, except in the centre where a typical Moroccan market dominates. The city of Ouarzazate lies in the southern part of Morocco. It derives its name from a Berber phrase meaning without noise or without confusion. It is often the favorite stop for the tourists on their way to the Sahara Desert. Most of them stop over to stock up provisions for their further journey to the great deserts.
