RABBI'S REFLECTIONS RABBI HOWARD NEEDLEMAN

THE OBSERVANCE OF OUR FAITH

Nothing Adds More To Hanukkah's Blessing

T

wo years ago we experienced a Hanukkah like none other. Some called it Thanksgiveaka as Hanukkah and our American holiday of Thanksgiving overlapped.

However, this is not the case of Hanukkah. It commemorates a historical fact in our ancient history – the time of our victory over the Greeks and the rededication of our temple. The holiday itself isn’t even canonized within our Holy Bible as it only appears within the apocrypha or inter-testamental books of the Greek Church.

We know that the occurrence of this phenomenon will never occur again in our lifetimes and was a special time to give thanks for our blessings as Americans and for our celebration of religious freedom.

But these things really happened. There really was a Jewish revolt against the Greeks led by the Maccabean family, they really did rededicate our temple and seat themselves on the Jewish throne, they minted Jewish coins and celebrated for eight days we do now.

This year’s Hanukkah celebration will feel quite different than the one we celebrated just two years ago. This year’s observance of Hanukkah coincides with another holiday entirely. Our first night of Hanukkah is falling on the same night as Christmas eve. Our festival of lights, when we celebrate the re-dedication of the Temple, remember the heroism of the Maccabees and the miracle of oil, will be filled with a different form of ‘holiday cheer’.

The greatest miracle of Hanukkah isn’t the miracle of oil or the victory of the Maccabees. It is the fact that we, as a people, have literally been observing this historical event for over 2,000 years. We are the shamash keeping the flame alive.

Often times we reflect on the December dilemma – the championing of our holiday alongside of Christmas. The giving of gifts and presents of Hanukkah is often viewed as a parallel to the gift giving of Christmas. There is little that links these two holidays together except for the fact that they often occur in the same season (though rarely do they fall on the same exact date as they will do this year.)

I know that with the confluence of Hanukkah and Christmas that there will be a greater tendency to make the lights of our menorot shine brighter than the lights that will adorn the majority of the world we live in, but that isn’t necessary. The lights of the Hanukkah already shine brightly; they shine with the blessing of history, they shine with the blessing of God’s presence in creating miracles, and they shine as a beacon of our religious freedom.

I am a fan of Hanukkah and love to say that it’s my favorite Jewish holiday of the year. I say so unabashedly as a student of Jewish history. Many of our Jewish holidays have been transformed over the ages or tell of a narrative first transmitted in the bible. Our agricultural pilgrimage festivals of Sukkoth, Passover and Shavuot have been transformed into liberation and wandering and the covenant at Sinai. Our High Holy Days hearken back to the sacrifices of Abraham and Isaac and the offerings on the altar of the temple. Each and every one of our holy days have been transformed from a time of our dwelling within our native land and the sacrifices performed at the temple, to an age of our dispersion and prayer of our hearts.

We add a new candle each night of Hanukkah as a reminder that our blessings increase, and while it is entertaining to think if the similarities or connections to our holiday to the religious traditions of other faiths, nothing can add to the blessings of Hanukkah more than our own observances, history and memories.

Through Hanukkah, We Recognize Our Freedom

A

t age 11 or 12, in the days leading up to Hanukkah, I vividly remember decorating our family room with colorful paper chains from one end to the other, while my parents were out for the night. I was surprised and taken aback when my older brother tore down the decorations with angry words of rebuke against “hukat hagoy” taking up the customs of non-Jewish people. This reaction to Christmas permeated and left a lasting impression on me for years to come. Rather than respecting another faith and tradition, the message of separation and even fear was ingrained on my young psyche. Fast forward a decade or so, when I was invited to my first ever Christmas celebration at the home of a close friend and I reassessed and reevaluated my prior experience and narrow-mindedness. Even as part of a pluralistic Jewish community, I think that sometimes, during these days of Hanukkah and Christmas, there’s a tendency for us to overcompensate, perhaps through extravagant gifts to our families (for eight nights!), or perhaps just feeling awkward around Christmas decorations and Christian religious symbols. This challenge may become even more complicated in our families of mixed religious backgrounds.

My suggestion is to emphasize the deep religious significance of Hanukkah as a holiday of freedom and Jewish pride, as well as a season of Jewish community, and respect for all communities. Hanukkah is neither better or worse than Christmas, its completely different. Traditionally, Hanukkah was a minor Jewish holiday which has gained in prominence due to its proximity to Christmas and other holiday celebrations. Hanukkah commemorates religious freedom and endurance of Judaism for over 2,000 years - that’s pretty great!

TKAE EXECUTIVE BOARD Hanukkah Memories and Wishes For the New Year My favorite Hanukkah memory is when each of my children light their own menorah as we sing the Hanukkah blessings. We would play the dreidel game with pennies, sing Hanukkah songs and then each night the kids would open one gift. They would love to eat my homemade latkes, brisket and applesauce. Most important is just bringing the family together. My wish for the New Year is that we should all be safe, healthy and feel love all around us! - Karen Shiekman The first thing that comes to mind for me when I think about Hanukkah memories is my mom making her father’s secret recipe potato latkes. Not a Hanukkah went by where my mom wasn’t in the kitchen grating potatoes and making batch after batch of latkes to feed our family at our yearly Hanukkah gatherings. I loved to stand by her side and help her grate the potatoes and place the latkes in the frying pan. Over the years there have been lots of fancy gourmet versions that have come along like sweet potato, cheese, spinach and garlic flavor latkes but nothing ever compares to my mom’s. My wish for our Temple family for the New Year is good health, happiness and for all our members to attend at least one new event we have to offer this year. TKAE has so much to offer its members and you don’t know what you’re missing if you don’t come out and get involved. We hope to see you here. - Linda Gendler When I think of Hanukkah, my mind immediately recalls the yearly photos that David and I mailed to family and friends of our boys, Ben and Kevin. Looking at the progression from year to year is inevitably filled with shock at how fast the time has gone and memories of raising those two delicious children! My wish for Ben, Kevin and my temple family and friends is that the new year is filled with love, happiness and peace. - Cara Pollack

My fondest memories of Hanukkah are of my maternal grandfather, who I lovingly referred to as Papa. He was the person that had the biggest influence on who I am as a person, and his only skills in the kitchen were to make potato latkes every year at Hanukkah. He would wear an apron and slop oil and flour all over the kitchen, but he made the best latkes! I miss him and I definitely miss his delicious latkes! I don’t think there are too many people out there who haven’t noticed the malicious tone and divisive rhetoric of this year’s presidential election campaign. My wish for this coming New Year is that no matter who is elected to lead this country, that they figure out a way to bring us together as Americans so that we may move forward in the coming years in a successful and productive manner. - Rob Rickel My wish for the New Year comes from author Neil Gaiman, who provides a unique and inspiring take on hopes for the year ahead: “I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.” Hanukkah Memory: Like many families, every night of Hanukkah we not only light the candles but say the Hanukkah blessings and sing one or two songs. Even though this is a nightly ritual, there is always one night every year (usually sometime in the middle of the holiday) where the celebration factor gets taken up a notch or two, with the entire family dancing around the kitchen while laughing, clapping, and just being silly. Whenever this night happens to occur, it undoubtedly becomes my favorite Hanukkah memory for the year. - Daniel S. Weinger

Tradition is the common denominator in all of my special memories of Hanukkah. Traditions remind us of what we share together. The obvious tradition we share on Hanukkah is giving presents to the children. It is always heartwarming to see the absolute joy the kids have when opening their presents. But, there’s so much more. Since I was a kid, my father always gave each kid, and now each grandkid, a silver dollar. It’s such a nice tradition and the coins will always serve as a reminder of an awesome tradition to be handed down from one generation to the next. Then, there’s the tradition of having the family come over to light the menorah and eat some latkes while the kids open presents and play dreidel. All of these, and so many others, are what the holiday symbolizes for our family. My wish for the New Year is a year of peace and continued health and happiness for all of our friends and family. - Rafael Katz Hanukkah has always been one of my favorite Jewish holidays. Growing up in Brooklyn, we lived in the same apartment building as my grandparents. Every week, from the time I was a young child, I looked forward to watching and helping my mother and grandmother prepare a delicious Jewish feast in time for the shabbat arrival of my aunts, uncles and cousins. My grandmother’s old wooden bowl and curved chopping knife used to prepare countless dinners holds a cherished place not only in my memories, but also did in the kitchen in which my children grew up, and still does today. During the eight days of Hanukkah, friends and neighbors came over to join us. For hours my mother sat at the kitchen table grating potatoes in that wooden bowl, mixing in a number of “special” ingredients to make what seemed to me the best potato latkes in all of Brooklyn! - Adrienne Kaltman

O

ur goal this year is to teach our children about Gemilut Hasadim, the giving of loving-kindness. Each event will center around one organization that represents a facet of life needing support, respect, understanding and awareness. And through these events we plan to help our children better understand the concepts of Mitzvot while reinforcing Jewish values. IN OCTOBER we will be hosting a Fun Run at the school to encourage our children to stay active, be grateful for their strong bodies, and support others less fortunate. Zachary Levinson is a former TKAE student who is participating in the Race for Champions to benefit the Special Olympics Broward County Nova Sharks Team. Every dollar of our FUNdraiser will be donated to Zach’s race and benefit the children of the Special Olympics. In the weeks prior to the race, each classroom will be reading a book about children with special needs, the art teacher will incorporate an Olympic themed art project and the teachers will be reinforcing the concept of mitzvot and lovingkindness. IN NOVEMBER we will be assembling care packages with supplies and letters for the Israeli Defense Force soldiers in Israel. TKAE has partnered with JWRP and will be sending 21 women from the Congregation to Israel in December where they will distribute the items we are able to provide to the soldiers who help protect the people of Israel. In the weeks prior to the collection, each classroom will be reading a book related to the concept of freedom, soldiers who protect us in the U.S. and Israel, as well as participate in a craft project to create little fill-in-the-blank letters to send to the soldiers. IN DECEMBER we will be assembling Hanukkah Mitzvah Blessing Bags for the homeless in Broward County. Our goal is to provide as many Blessing Bags as possible, each filled with 8 items for the 8 nights of Hanukkah, with items including: socks, dental floss, toothpaste, toothbrush, water, toilet paper, deodorant and $5-10 meal gift cards. In the weeks prior to collection, each classroom will learn about the blessings we have in our lives, the importance of hard work and why it feels so good to give back to people less fortunate than ourselves. IN MARCH we will be joining the Broward Humane Society Walk 4 Pets to spread awareness about the joys of pet ownership, as well as to help raise awareness about animal rescue and adoption. We will form a TKAE team where families can join and participate in the 3k with their pets and enjoy the Carnival afterwards. In the weeks prior to the event, each classroom will be reading a book related to animals, each child will bring their favorite stuffed animal or a pic of their pet at home to school for a little presentation and the teacher will incorporate an animal themed art project so the kids can express their love of pets. IN APRIL we will be celebrating Arbor Day with the City of Plantation and will be raising money to have trees planted on behalf of TKAE’s families at parks in our school’s city. We will also be participating in a tree matching program where TKAE’s Sisterhood will match our donations and plant a tree in Israel for every tree we have planted locally. In the weeks prior to collection, each classroom will be reading a book related to nature, trees and the benefits they provide, the teachers will incorporate a nature/tree themed art project and the children will get to explore the different species of trees on the school property. IN MAY we will be donating broken, damaged or used crayons to the Crayon Initiative, a program that helps nurture creativity, imagination and inspiration through crayons. We will be collecting broken, damaged or used crayons throughout the year to help remanufacture new crayons, fund grants for art programs and support local schools in need of supplies. The classrooms use crayons on a daily basis, allowing our children to explore the beauty in color and the endless possibilities their imaginations can create through art. 11

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Hanukkah and Christmas Lights Remind Us of Our Freedom “Even if all the nations that live under the rule of the king obey him, and have chosen to do his commandments, departing each one from the religion of his fathers, yet I and my sons and my brothers will live by the covenant of our fathers... We will not obey the king’s word by turning aside from our religion to the right hand or to the left.” (1-Maccabees 2:19-22)

VALERIA MICHANIE RELIGIOUS SCHOOL DIRECTOR

It is my hope that the lights of Hanukkah will keep illuminating our path in making the right choices.

By the time you are reading this article we will be nearing Hanukkah, “the festival of lights.” This is the holiday where we rejoice for miracles—the military victory of the vastly outnumbered Jews against the Greeks, as well as the victory of faith and love for Judaism that has kept us bonded from generation to generation. The fight of the Maccabees has been an enduring one throughout history. The protagonists changed, but the struggle for survival has been the same. Over time, Jews have had to fight for their right to survive and preserve our religion and traditions, and yet, here we are. But the survival of Judaism over history is not a mere result of a miracle. Just like the Maccabees chose to defend their Judaism at the risk of losing their lives we have to make choices in life. The choice to live Jewishly and maintain our traditions and rituals is truly a challenge. Our children are blessed enough to grow and live in a nation where they can celebrate their Jewish heritage and religion every day. This is the land of dreams, the land of freedom; and yet, I still feel that Judaism is at risk. The battle we confront nowadays is different but the risk is the same. Where do we place Judaism within our lives? Is it a core value? And how do we make Judaism relevant for our children? The value of a Jewish education, is the key in keeping Judaism alive, and our role at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El religious school, along with your help, is instrumental in

making Judaism meaningful and joyful for our children. We are touching our students’ lives by giving them a strong Jewish foundation, along with the tools to make it a conscious, value-based choice in life. If we achieve this task, there is hope in accomplishing a real victory. It is precisely this spiritual victory that the menorah lights symbolize. Fire, the soul and spirituality are all connected in Jewish thought. The light of Hanukkah is a symbol of the inner spiritual strength of the Jewish people and our resilience in fighting the odds. It is this inner spiritual strength that has enabled the Jewish people to outlast the greatest empires in history and forge a monumental legacy to humanity. When walking down familiar streets this December we might see many colorful lights. This year Hanukkah and Christmas coincide in the calendar. The blending of Hanukkah and Christmas lights will indeed remind us how lucky we are to live in a country where we can freely celebrate our holidays. The beauty of living in this country is that we can proudly express our heritage and culture if we choose to live our life Jewishly. As we get ready for Hanukkah, I hope that the taste of the sufganiot (jelly doughnuts) and latkes will enable you and your family to create sweet memories to share with the next generation. It is my hope that the lights of Hanukkah will keep illuminating our path in making the right choices. Let the dreidel spin and get ready to enjoy a wonderful Hanukkah! From my own family and the TKAE family, Happy Hanukkah!

WOMEN OF REFORM JUDAISM Upcoming Programs and Events Offer Cultural Reflection and Involvement

A

s we approach the holidays and the end of 2016, it seems this has been the year of the woman. Karen Shiekman is our first female Temple president in many years, and it appears a woman will be elected president of the United States. I am also proud to say that many women at TKAE have stepped into new and significant roles as Temple board members, event chairs, and WRJ/ Sisterhood and PTO leaders.

DAVIA MAZUR PRESIDENT OF SISTERHOOD

We will discuss the roles of women in Biblical and modern society and how historically powerful men (such as David) have felt emboldened to treat women disrespectfully.

And so it is appropriate that we end this year with two events highlighting women’s roles in Judaism. On Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m., we will sponsor a provocative lecture funded by the incubator grant our WRJ/ Sisterhood chapter received from the National Women of Reform Judaism. Dr. Sandra Lilienthal, a popular speaker on topics of Jewish interest, will lead a discussion titled, “King David’s Red Tent: Women’s Perspectives on His Journey.” We will discuss the roles of women in Biblical and modern society and how historically powerful men (such as David) have felt emboldened to treat women disrespectfully. This topic could not be more timely in light of national affairs. On Friday, Dec. 2, at 6:30 p.m., we’ll present an innovative and spiritual Women’s Shabbat Service. Temple women of all ages are invited to participate in what will be a unique bonding experience, and we will have a special prayer and send-off for the moms going to Israel on the Women’s Renaissance Project December 5-15. Regardless of whether you can read Hebrew, sing or chant, we will find a comfortable place for you on the bima. Contact Davia Mazur at [email protected] or 954328-1932 or see Cantor Goldman to participate. Also, as part of our incubator grant, throughout November and December themes and lessons from “The Secret Chord” and King David’s life will be infused into community programming throughout Broward County. The programs will include music, lectures and interfaith and interracial discussions presented by local rabbis, pastors and scholars. We hope you will attend one or more of the programs, which are described on pages 16 and 17. 15

We are also excited to host the annual Holiday Boutique on Monday, Nov. 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the Early Childhood PTO. Thanks to Brittany Mohler and her committee, the Boutique’s vendor spots have been sold out since September. We’ll have everything you need for yourself and your holiday gifts, and 20 percent of all sales support youth and education programming. Bring your friends and relatives from the community for a fun day or evening out. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served beginning at 5 p.m. And don’t miss our Full Moon Kayak on Sunday, December 11, from 5-9 p.m. at West Lake Park. Everyone who attended our sold-out event last year is still talking about it so register early. The park fee of $35 covers kayak and guide. No kayaking experience is necessary and you will not get wet. This is a great ladies’ bonding experience! WRJ/Sisterhood Board Meetings – everyone is invited to our monthly meetings in the chapel to take on a project, make new friends or just learn more about our group: • Wed., Nov. 2, at 6:30 p.m. • Wed., Dec. 7, at 6:30 p.m. • Wed., Jan. 4, at 6:30 p.m. And back by popular demand, WRJ/ Sisterhood cooks with your religious school students: • All-School Challah Bake – Sunday, Nov. 20. The Temple ovens will be fired up for 100 loaves of challah. You and your kids won’t want to miss this. • Latka-Making – Sunday, Dec. 4. Our top chefs in grades 4-6 will be peeling, grating, mixing and frying latkas in preparation for Hanukkah.

TEMPLE FRIENDS

Interfaith Homes, Dealing With the December Dilemma This year Hanukkah and Christmas fall on the same day. When one half of a couple is Jewish and the other is non-Jewish; more to the point, when one grew up with a Christmas tree and the other did not, the question can come frightened with all sorts of cultural and emotional baggage.

Jeffrey Weinstein TEMPLE FRIENDS PRESIDENT

UPCOMING EVENTS NOVEMBER 2016 Thursday, November 10 Temple Friends Board Meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 20 Temple Friends Brunch at 10:30 a.m. DECEMBER 2016 Thursday, December 8 Temple Friends Board Meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 11 Temple Friends Brunch at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 17 Temple Friends Annual Hanukkah Party Doris Grober’s Home – 2 p.m.

With Hanukkah and Christmas falling on the same day, the New York Times asked Jewish readers in interfaith relationships about their first trees. For some, allowing a tree into their living space was a guiltinducing surrender to assimilation. For others, it was a joyous merger, often involving both a tree and a menorah. Sometimes each side has to give. When Simon Silverstein and his wife got together in Brooklyn, he was firmly antitree. He said “I’m not used to this, and I really don’t want it”. Eventually after the couple had children, Mr. Silverstein agreed to a pine branch stuck in a pot. Today, their tree is a wooden “tree sculpture” that he made with a Star of David on top. Our compromise seems to be working. Mr. Silverstein said, “We’ve been married for 50 years.” One of the most creative compromises can be found in the home of Michael Patchen of Greenwich, Connecticut. A seven foot tall “menorah tree” with nine oversize candelabrum stems, each vined with evergreen foliage and decorated with ornaments.

Unfortunately, everyone has to answer it for themselves about their own comfort level: it’s a question of what does this mean and how do you present it? Here are some tips for dealing with the December dilemma: • Talk with your children about what they might say when strangers ask what they want or what they got for Christmas. • Speak up for your children if they feel overwhelmed by Christmas themes at school and activities. • Make your own family traditions volunteering, cooking and going to the movies. • Santa Claus may not be real for your children, but for their young elementary friends, he might be. • Build a strong identity all year long focusing on your family, cultural or religious traditions. When December comes, don’t try to compete, but rather build your own rituals. MaryLynn and I wish you a wonderful Hanukkah! B’Shalom,

Jeffrey Weinstein President of Temple Friends

THE PHILIPSON FAMILY

They Have Been Members Of Our Temple Since 2001 For the last 15 years, we have been committed members of Temple Kol Ami Emanuel. As new parents, we first joined the temple in 2001 to connect with other young families and to help build and instill strong Jewish values in our children. Both of our daughters attended the Early Childhood Program, the Religious School, and celebrated their Bat Mitzvahs’ at TKAE. Our eldest daughter attended High School in Israel this past summer with a partial scholarship from TKAE’s Elizabeth Shoshanna Harr Youth Scholarship Fund. Over the years, we have built strong friendships with other temple members that continue to thrive today. We have been fortunate to celebrate many simchas together and have counted on our temple family in difficult times as well. TKAE is an integral part of our spiritual and community lives. We have participated and volunteered in temple sponsored functions like the Run with the Rabbi and mitzvah projects like feeding the homeless. We enjoy attending services throughout the year and consider our temple home as an integral part of our Jewish identity. We look forward to many more happy events in the coming years.

Why People Pray

The Five JewISH INDIVIDUALS Who Have Altered Our World

Mordecai Schreiber Rabbi, author, educator, writer, translator, Biblical scholar, and founder of Schreiber Translations (STI), one of the leading translation companies in the United States.

WEDNESDAYS • DEC. 7, 14, 21 • BAGEL LUNCHEON RABBI EDWARD MALINE AT 12:30 P.M.

Many Jews in the course of history have made significant contributions to the world.

Rabbi Schreiber’s book, Why People Pray, introduces a fascinating new supposition: that people of all faiths and all nationalities could conceivably find ways to pray together by using prayers that are universal to all while simultaneously preserving the integrity of each individual faith.

However five Jewish individuals imbued with one central idea of the Jewish Faith actually changed and altered the world we live in. Their ideas have impacted us so greatly that Western. Civilization would have been so different than what it is today. In a three part series, Rabbi Edward Maline will discuss the unique contributions of these individuals to our world. With thanks to Carole Clarkson for graciously underwriting this series

YOUTH PROGRAM

Hanukkah Is An Opportunity to Share Our History Look around. I see red and green everywhere. I wonder where the blue is. Sometimes you feel like this. Christmas is everywhere, and everyone is celebrating it. I definitely felt like this when I was younger.

Now, I look around and think how amazing it is to celebrate and explain a holiday that not many celebrate. My friends ask me what Hanukkah is about, and I get to tell a wonderful story. Explain the miracle. Leia Gewirtz

KAFTY RELIGIOUS AND CULTURAL VICE PRESIDENT

I am proud to be a Jewish teen, and celebrate Jewish holidays. I have always been very involved in the Jewish world. I grew up at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El, which is where I discovered my love for Judaism. I go to a Jewish sleep away camp, Camp Coleman. It is the place I discovered my Jewish identity. I am also not just in KAFTY, but I am the Religious and Cultural Vice President. If you look around, you see many Christians and Catholics, but if you look closely, you can

Growing up seeing all my friends celebrating Christmas was fun because I got to explain how I loved being Jewish. While I got to tell them about the things I celebrate, I also learned about other holidays. This year, the first night of Hanukkah is Christmas Eve. I am excited. Many people, including me, will be celebrating with the people they love. Nothing could make me happier than celebrating holidays with my family. I think that it is phenomenal that everyone will be happy on the same day, with the people they love. Look around. You are with your family. Enjoy it.
