“Learning together, Shaping the future” November/December 2016 Message from the Headteacher Another busy term moves forward at a great pace. As usual the newsletter is packed full of the different activities and opportunities that pupils can enjoy at Hall Green. Please take some time to look through the newsletter, and see if there are activities or opportunities that your son or daughter would like to get involved in. Year 11 pupils should be revising hard for their mock exams which started on the 25 November, while their parents had the opportunity to meet and discuss targets and ways to improve with teachers at Year 11 Parents’ Evening on 22 November. November is anti-bullying month at Hall Green, where the pastoral team and form tutors raise awareness of the issues around bullying with the pupils. When Ofsted visited school in February they reported that ‘Pupils told inspectors that there are very few incidents of bullying and that staff deal with instances quickly and effectively.’ However, it is vitally important to refresh and reinforce these important messages with pupils. Mrs Monk, the school’s Inclusion and Welfare Manager, has been delivering assemblies to pupils to remind them about the different ways bullying can take place, and what to do if they believe it is happening to them or their friends. Mrs Monk has been joined by members of the School Council, who have prepared and presented their own talks on this subject. Their main message has been to tell someone if you are affected by bullying in any way. There is more information on the school website. In other news, I wanted to let parents know about the retirement of one of our governors. Paul Jenner has been a governor at Hall Green School for over 25 years. In my short time working with him, I have found his advice and support invaluable.

He has been a long-standing friend to Hall Green, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to his role, and making a vast contribution to the ongoing success of the school. He will be sadly missed. I am sure you will share our best wishes for a long and healthy retirement for Paul and his wife Jane. Now that winter is upon us, there is a risk that bad weather may affect school openings. In the case of bad weather, parents should check first of all with the school website if there is a risk of a school closure. Announcements will also be made on local radio at the earliest possible time: Radio WM, Heart FM and Free Radio. School will only be closed if the site or access to the site is a risk to the Health and Safety of staff and students.

Year 11 Mock Exams Year 11 pupils will have been given their exam timetables along with a letter informing them of the expectations during their exams. Pupils should pay particular attention to the exam regulations and notices that are also published on the exams section of the school website. Pupils are reminded about the importance of being on time for their exams as well as bringing the correct basic equipment for each exam. The Year 11 exams are taking place from Friday 25 November to Tuesday 13 December. Please ensure that you help and support your child throughout the exams process.

In Languages we celebrate hard work and commitment to Spanish, German and French. The following pupils have been selected as Linguists of the Month. ¡Muy bien! Sehr gut! Très bien!

We have had a very successful recruitment for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award this year with 58 pupils signing up and a waiting list of pupils who want to gain their award. All students will have started working towards completing their award and will have regular sessions after school to support our final expeditions in the summer term.

The end of last half term saw each house holding their achievement assemblies. This was a lovely celebratory event celebrating attendance, punctuality, praise and penalties with forms in each house winning trophies for the best in each category. Each house also celebrated their star pupils with one pupil from each form being selected to receive star badges for various different reasons. We look forward to our final achievement assembly of the year where trophies will again be issued for attendance, punctuality, praise and penalties along with star pupil of the half term. All pupils who have also reached above 97% attendance will receive individual certificates and pupils that have excelled in being awarded praises will receive Bronze, Silver or Gold badges in recognition of their hard work.

Isengard Star Pupils

L1 received the Best Form Penalties with only 89 penalties in total.

L5 received the Best Form Attendance with a whole form percentage attendance of 95.9%.

L8 Received the Best Form Punctuality with only 17 late marks across the whole form.

L4 received the Best Form Praises with a total of 731 praises in the whole form.

This was a brilliant opportunity to meet like-minded people from other schools and gain valuable advice from our engaging speaker, Peter Rawling. As year 11 pupils, this is also an important time for choosing A-levels or BTecs, which in turn will impact what we study in the future. For me, this trip showed the value of planning ahead, considering not just the immediate future, but both University and beyond. Thank you to the brilliant teachers who took time out of their day to accompany us, and of course Ms Sears for this great experience. Elise Jeffery, Year 11

Our thanks goes out to the college for coming into school on the 8 November to help advise our year 10 and 11 pupils with their difficult subjects decisions for post 16. Year 10 BIMA Digital Day

PiXL Trip Year 11 – Getting into Top Universities Before half term, some friends and I were lucky enough to be involved in an exciting trip to the Belfry, run by PIXL. Here, we spent several hours learning how to get into the top Universities to study Pharmacy, Dentistry, Vetinary Science, Medicine and Bio-medical Sciences in the future.

A group of our year 10s who are studying either ICT or Computer Science attended a National Digital Day with the support of StudioA2 Website, Software and App Developers. The pupils found out about job roles and skills required for the Digital Sector and had to present a group challenge of how we can use digital apps to solve problems facing young people.

The winning group have been entered into a National Competition well done to Tooba, Hadir, Kyle, Mohammed and Bilal! See www.bimadday.org.uk for further details. The Skills Show Some of our pupils attended The NEC to visit the nation's largest careers event to speak to a huge range of colleges, universities, apprenticeship providers and employers. This event hugely helps and impacts on the decisions pupils are making for their post 16 options. King Edwards Camp Hill Boys and Girls School Sixth Forms We have received two talks in school one for the boys and one for the girls to inform some of our year 10 and 11 pupils about what the these grammar schools could potential offer at post 16. It was a pleasure to welcome back some of our ex pupils to give a real insight into what it is like and hearing their advice with applications. Forward Thinking Programme Some of our pupils have just successfully completed a 4 year programme with support of the University of Birmingham which has given them a range of experiences to inform and motivate a desire for participation in higher education. Birmingham Building Scholarship and Work Experience We had a visit in school for year 10 and 11 pupils to find out how pupils may be entitled to financial and personal support if they are choosing to entering degree subjects such as Architecture, Civil Engineering, Building Surveying and City Planning. Class Charts All parents should now have received, from their child, a letter explaining what Class Charts is, how to log on and giving you your own personal login code. The Class Charts software will give you up to date information on two areas: the praises or penalties that your child has received and the homework that they have been set. I do recommend that you log in to this in order to support your child in completing homework. Class charts is also available as a free smartphone app under the name “Class Charts Parent”. If you are having difficulty using this, please do contact the school e mail [email protected] or telephone reception who will pass you on to the most appropriate person to help.

Music Concert Tuesday 13 December 2016 2.15 – 3.15pm This concert will be presented to Year 7 pupils but there will be space for parents. Please email Miss Rex on: [email protected] if you are interested in attending.

Google expedition – Virtual reality fun! On Tuesday 8 November, Google visited Hall Green School to provide a virtual reality experience to some lucky pupils across all years! In Geography, Science and History lessons pupils were able to visit places such as Rio De Janeiro, The Pyramids in Egypt, The Great Barrier Reef, The Antarctic, The Human Heart and The Universe with virtual reality goggles provided by Google...the list of places is endless! Pupils were excited and engaged engaged and really enjoyed the experience: “It was like I was really there!” Abraar Hussain Year 8 If you would like to experience this at home, the app is free (called 'Google Expedition') and the cardboard virtual reality goggles can be purchased for a nominal cost online.

Certificate Evening This evening is always one of the highlights of the school year – a chance to celebrate the success of last summer’s leavers and hear how they are finding their feet in the next stage of their education or training. We are very grateful that South and City College always sponsor our individual prizes and we presented awards to our three highest attainers: Hannah Scott-Cook, Adam Khan and Ben Bancroft. We always like to recognise those who have made great progress or persevered despite difficult circumstances and our “Resilience and Progress” awards went to Sultan Ali, Wadeed Mohamed and Pamelah Harvey. However, every one of our leavers who went up to collect their GCSE certificates has, at some point, had to show real character to overcome difficulties. This is what we value at Hall Green. Congratulations to the class of 2016! The evening is summed up by Haleem Khan, one of our leavers: “The certificate evening was truly a great experience. It was very nostalgic to go back to the place all of our journeys truly began. Seeing familiar faces after so long gave everyone a much needed dose of security and fun after going to a new college, making new friends and essentially starting a new life of sorts. I am sad to see that most of us have parted ways but the experience will be everlasting”.

Year 10/11 Netball Match v Ark Boulton Academy On Wednesday 12 October, Hall Green competed in their first netball fixture of the year against Ark Boulton Academy on their home turf. Down to our superb defence of Kate, Natasha and Shereen, the opposition didn’t even manage to score a goal! The game finished 14-0. Congratulations to Jasmine Smith who was awarded player of the match. Team: Annie Davies, Elise Jeffery, Arusha Ahsan, Jasmine Smith, Bethan Harris, Kate Biddulph, Shereen Hussain, Natasha Dey and Sana Imtiaz. Year 8 Netball Match v Ark Boulton Academy On Wednesday 19 October, Hall Green played their second netball fixture of the year against Ark Boulton (again), but this time it was over to the year 8 netball team! The exceptional shooting from Heather and Sally saw us take the lead very early; a lead which we maintained throughout the game. It was down to some superb passages of play, excellent shooting and solid defending (something we had been working on in training), which enabled us to take the game 15-2. Congratulations to Heather who was awarded player of the match. Team: Heather Steel, Sally Abdulla, Shaimaa Messaoudi, Emily O Neill, Simran Sandhu, Shanice Price, Imogen Jeffery and Aleeha Rasul.

PE Department News Miss Reed and Mrs Paxton-Gault have been running weekly netball practice with lots of girls from all year groups. This is a popular club and is very well attended by pupils showing real commitment. We are looking to recruit New Year 7 players in order to create a fresh group of school representatives, so please encourage your daughters to come along and join in. Teams in years 8-11 have started the season well in their first fixtures:

Year 9, 10 & 11 Girls and Boys Indoor Rowing Competition (School Games) On Wednesday 2 November, Hall Green competed in the year 9 girls’ and boys’ rowing, year 10 boys’ rowing and year 11 girls’ rowing School Games Competition held at King Edward VI Camp Hill Boys School. The event saw teams from across the South of Birmingham battle for a place in the

Birmingham School Games Finals in February and I’m pleased to announce that after some tough races all our teams were triumphant in qualifying for the finals. Well done to all the pupils involved and to Miss Gosal who has been training the team at lunchtimes and supported them on the day. Year 11 Girls Team: Natasha Dey, Jasmine Smith, Lucy Wilson and Kate Biddulph.

Year 9 and 10 Boys’ Futsal competition On Tuesday 8 November our Year 9 and 10 boys’ futsal teams (football), competed in a local area futsal competition at King’s Heath Boys’ School. The boys have been attending training every week since the start of the year, so were well prepared for this event. Their talents shone as the Year 10’s finished 1st and the year 9’s finished 3rd. Great achievement boys and thanks to Mr Khan for training the boys and taking them to the competition. Good Luck in your upcoming fixtures! Year 9 Team: Samiul Hasnath, Dhanyal Liaquat, Uzair Hussain, Mohammed Redha Alubudi, Ehtesham Jhangir and Shuaib Sajad. Year 10 team: Shawali Ahmedzai, Raziq Malakhil, Saif Shakeel, Hasnain Bashir, Haseeb Ahmed, Riaz Khayer. Secondary Regional Panathlon Monday 7 November saw us compete in the West Midlands Regional Panathlon final - an event in which we were defending champions; so we were

back to defend our title. Hall Green competed against Fairfax, Solihull South and Chadsgrove in a bid to retain the title; something that was not going to be easy. However, our team who had been attending weekly training sessions with Mrs Paxton-Gault and Mr Craddock, put in some amazing performances to finish 1st in the Boccia and Kurling competitions, 2nd in the Polybat event and 3rd in the table cricket. The competition got even closer in the field and track athletics and it was too close call who would finish in which position. As we eagerly awaited the results, one by one it was ourselves and Fairfax that were left to claim the title…………….but it was Hall Green who were triumphant and so we retain the title for the second year in a row (beating Fairfax by 10 points)! You can read the Panathlon’s full article of the school’s win by following the link below: http://panathlon.com/two-in-a-row-for-hall-green/ Panathlon Team: Rebecca Bates, Adam Podmore, Ibraheem Ali, Jamie Bridgman, Harris Abdullah, Kashif Hussain, Hasif-Ul Ambia, Maria Ahmed, Naseeb Ur-Rehman, Gemma Liszewski and Anisa Mahmood.

Team Hall Green – Winners!!! U13 Boys’ Table Tennis Competition (School Games) On Monday 14 November, Hall Green hosted the Level 2 School Games U13 boys’ table tennis competition. We entered three teams, and the C team came third (excellent result) and the A team won the entire tournament! This now means that they too progress to the Level 3 School Games finals on 8 December. Thanks to the Table Tennis officials who helped on the day and further thanks go to Mrs Paxton-Gault who ran the event, coached the teams and helped to officiate (not to mention all the training beforehand)! A Team: Muhammud Aslam, Oscar Hook-Evans, Arehan Hussain, Bilal Khan B Team: Zain Tahir, Saeed Gubran, Hashim Muhammad, Dauud Amir C Team: Praladh Singh, Dhroo Singh, Siraaj Mohammed, Isa Zafeer Officials: Dominic Liburd. Year 7 and Year 10 Indoor Football competition- Year 10 Power to Victory! Left Year 7 team: Dauud Amir, Moosa Islam, Kasim Sajad, Hasan Sajad, Aqib Rehman, Al-Mustafa Suleiman, Sami Coley Right Year 10 team: Shawali Ahmedzai, Raziq Malakhil, Saif Shakeel, Hasnain Bashir, Haseeb Ahmed, Riaz Khayer, Mohammed Eesa On Wednesday 16 November, Hall Green’s Year 7 and 10 football teams were back in action at Birmingham’s new Play Football arena. The tournament was run by Play Football to launch and showcase their new facilities and was an opportunity for our teams to compete against schools from across the city. Our Year 10 team competed against 8 other schools including: Broadway Academy, Perry Beeches II, Yardley’s School, Holyhead School, The International School and King Edward’s Sheldon Heath Academy. They played some outstanding football throughout the tournament to reach the final against Perry Beeches II. This game ended in a 2-2 draw, which meant the dreaded penalty shoot-out took place. Our boys held their nerve and were resilient to the end to beat the very strong Perry Beeches II team (which we also believe consisted of academy players)! Huge congratulations! The Year 7 team unfortunately didn’t qualify for the finals, but what a great experience to compete against the same schools listed above and also to be in the presence of our fabulous Year 10 boys – what great role models to learn from. Thank you to Mr Khan and Mr Bressington who have been training the teams and supported them on the day.

Boccia and Kurling Competition (School Games) On Tuesday 22 November, Hall Green’s Boccia and Kurling teams were in action in the Level 2 School Games competition. Our pupils competed against several other school’s from around the city including, Wilson Stuart, Ark Boulton Academy, Bordesley Green Girls, Yardley’s, Fairfax, Baskerville and Victoria School to name a few. Our pupils had a great run in both competitions, with the Boccia team making it to the 3rd/4th place play off. However, by only the smallest of margins (1 point), we couldn’t quite make 3rd place, but the pupils should be really proud of their achievements, as the competition was of an extremely high standard! Well done to Adam Podmore, Rebecca Bates and Ibraheem Ali. The Kurling team, however did power to victory over the rest of the field, so well done to Jamie Bridgman and Naseeb Ur-Rehman who both displayed some excellent teamwork and Kurling skills.

Left: The Kurling team and Right: the Boccia team Goodbye to Adam Podmore One of our super star athletes is sadly leaving Hall Green School and as such the PE department wanted to recognise Adam’s continued commitment to PE and school sport during his time at the school. Adam has been a key member of several teams, most notably in the Panathlon team, who are 2 times regional champions (2015/2016). We wish Adam all the very best of luck in his new school, and hope that his passion for sport continues! Well done Adam! Coming soon: School Games mixed Years Boccia and Kurling, KS4 Girls’ and Boys’ Badminton, more netball fixtures and Under 16 boys Table Tennis.

School Trip Volunteers Needed We are looking to recruit a team of volunteers who could assist us with the following school trips next term:    

With auditions for Hall Green’s Got Talent this year coming to an end, we would like to say a massive thank you to all the acts who took part in the process. It was clear to see that all of the pupils had put a lot of time and effort into their auditions and as a result, it was a pleasure to watch such a variety of acts and extremely difficult to choose the final acts. The audition process is one of the most important parts of the whole show, so even if you didn’t make it to the main show, you are all a part of what makes Hall Green’s Got Talent so special. Thank you. Well done to all of the pupils who did make it through to the main show. We look forward to seeing you performing in the live show. Good luck to all and may the best House win!

Monday 30 January - Year 8 Geography trip to the Clent Hills Monday 30 January - Year 8 History trip to the Black Country Museum Friday 3 February - Year 8 Geography trip to the Clent Hills Friday 3 February - Year 8 History trip to the Black Country Museum

As a school we organise a wide range of trips and visits which support and extend the learning of our pupils. In order to widen the number of visits we organise and deepen the experiences that pupils can enjoy, we would like to recruit some willing and able volunteers to assist us. We would ask our volunteers to work closely alongside school staff, supporting and supervising small groups of pupils as they participate in the activities organised for these visits. Volunteers must be 18 years old or over and would be required to take part in a DBS child safeguarding check. If you would like to know more about this opportunity, please get in touch with Mr Jackson (Head of Geography) via the school office or at [email protected]

School Dress Code I would like to thank parents and carers for the time and effort they have put into making sure pupils are properly equipped for school at the start of term with the right equipment and the right uniform. Pupils continue to look very smart and wear their uniform with pride. With the cold weather well and truly with us now, could I remind parents that the school uniform policy agreed by the governors states that outdoor coats, scarves and gloves must be in a plain dark colour and that pupils should not wear hats except in extreme weather conditions. Pupils should continue to wear a school jumper if they wish to, not sweatshirts, tracksuit tops, sports tops or hoodies.

I would also like to remind parents that governors have changed the uniform policy to be grey trousers and skirts only, so if parents are looking to buy new trousers or skirts for their children, could they make sure they choose grey. This year is a transition year as we move from the old uniform policy that stipulated blue for girls and black for boys, but we expect all pupils to be wearing grey trousers or skirts from September 2017. Please note that you can find a copy of our school dress code in the parental booklet, on the website. If you have any concerns with regards to uniform, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Head of House.

Taking your child out of school Please find below a reminder of the procedures should you have to take your child out of school for an appointment before the end of the school day:  The pupil needs to bring in a hand written note from a Parent/Carer. The note should clearly state the ‘reason why’ and the ‘time’ the pupil needs to leave. The pupil needs to show the note to their Head of House and ask them for authorisation by signing the note.  When it is time for the pupil to leave school, they need to show the signed note to their Teacher teaching them at the time and ask if they can be excused from the lesson.  Pupil should then come to reception, show the receptionist the signed note and ask them if they can sign them out. Thank you for your assistance.

ParentPay Please ensure that your child’s dinner money account has sufficient funds for their daily food requirements. When adding money, please leave enough time for the money to be electronically credited. You can check your child’s balance at any time via ParentPay. If your child does not have enough money and you are not able to credit their

account in time, please provide them with a packed lunch. In an effort to improve communication to all Parents/Carers we send out copies of correspondence, such as trip letters, revisions guide letters, usernames/passwords and barcodes, where possible, by email via the online ParentPay system and using the Keep Kids Safe App. Please make sure that all pupils have activated their ParentPay account and email addresses have been verified. If you have not yet activated your ParentPay account, please do this as soon as possible. If your account is already active, please ensure you have added a valid email address. To use the App, download it from the App Store or Play Store and search for MyEd. If you are experiencing any difficulties using this software and would like some assistance then please contact Mrs V Ali or Mrs T Dickerson.

Children who get paid these benefits directly, instead of through a parent or guardian, can also get free school meals. To claim a free school meal please ask at the school reception for an application form. Once completed please return the form to school, along with evidence that will support your application.

School Fund Contribution Reminder We have a School Fund which receives income from a variety of sources - sponsorship, fund raising by pupils and parents/friends of the school. We also invite all families to contribute to this at the start of their school life with us. Our School Fund helps to pay for the cost of things which the education budget does not meet, but which help to make school life more pleasant. In the past it has helped to pay for a collection of board games that are used during Form Time, activities during the end of Summer Term celebrations, a supply of Leadership badges for Peer Mentor supporting roles and towards caring for the school environment through activities within the School Council. Although we realise that School Fund is a voluntary contribution, it does enable us to provide additional resources to enhance the curriculum and your support is very much appreciated. If you feel able to make a contribution we request £20.00 per child as a one-off payment, to cover the five years of attendance at Hall Green School. If you feel able to make a larger contribution it would be gratefully received. Payments can be made via ParentPay. Thank you for your support - it will benefit your child. Donations to the school are also welcome. If parents or friends of the school are interested in making a donation, please get in contact with the Headteacher via his PA, Mrs P Elliott.

Lost Property Has your child lost anything at school? Since September we have had numerous amounts of lost property handed into the school office. If you think your child has lost something please ask them to visit the school office and Safeguarding check if it is one of the many items we have. Any items not claimed by end of this term will be disposed of.

We wish to draw your attention to a free website for parents: www.parentinfo.org. The website offers expert information to help children and young people stay safe online. Please see our school website to access the link.
