Aims: 1. To gain an overview of the historical, contextual and musical elements of Jazz from the late 19th century to the present day. 2. To enable exposure to the music via the ‘live’ music experience. 3. To create an environment of relaxed and uninhibited learning.

Content: With the pianist / trumpeter Peter Marshall and Sax / Clarinet / piano Jeffery Wilson. We shall investigate the music known as Jazz from Blues via early jazz through swing and bebop to the cool school and beyond.

Presentation of the course: The methodology here will be via discussion, formal presentation, ‘live’ music and participation, recorded sound, ‘handouts’ and white board descriptors.
