Ben Light Gymnasium

I

thaca College’s main gymnasium was dedicated on December 5, 1964. The facility was later named after former administrator Ben Light in action taken by the school’s board of trustees in February 1968. The basketball court, with seating capacity for 2,600 spectators, is housed in the Laurence S. Hill Physical Education Center. Ben Light was a football, basketball and baseball standout at Ithaca. A 1936 graduate, he was hired as a faculty member and coach. Following World War II Light took over the men’s basketball program and guided the Bombers to a 70-51 record over the next seven seasons. In 1952 he was named the school’s first director of admission and placement, and seven years later he became secretary of Ithaca. In 1968 Light was named vice president of development, a position he held until his death. Laurence S. Hill was dean of physical education at Ithaca from 1929 until 1957. Both Light and Hill were inducted into the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame. The Ithaca men’s basketball team defeated Lock Haven, 77-57, in the first game played at the new gym on December 9, 1964. George Valesente, the current baseball coach at Ithaca, helped the Bombers to victory with 16 points. Ben Light Gymnasium has played host to 10 postseason men’s basketball games. At the end of the 1985-86 season, Ithaca lost in the opening round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) playoffs to Fredonia, 75-64. The Bombers then beat Union, 92-80, in the ECAC tournament during the 1990-91 season. In March 1993 the facility hosted its first NCAA playoff contest, when Fredonia and Ithaca met in the postseason for a second time. The Bombers posted a 71-56 victory. In 1993-94 Ithaca

2

hosted two ECAC tournament games, a 69-61 first-round win over Fredonia and a 73-70 semifinal loss to Elmira. The 1996-97 team beat Utica/Rome, 87-71, and fell, 61-60, in overtime to Elmira in the ECAC playoffs. In 1999-2000 the Bombers defeated Clarkson, 95-78, in a first-round ECAC game and went on to win the ECAC tournament at Brockport. In 2007, Ithaca defeated Rensselaer 80-69 in an ECAC quarterfinal. The Bombers hosted a secondround NCAA playoff game in 2009, falling to DeSales. The men’s basketball program has won more than 70 percent of its games in Ben Light Gymnasium. In addition to Ithaca’s two basketball teams, the facility is the home arena for intercollegiate gymnastics, volleyball and wrestling. The facility is the home arena for intercollegiate gymnastics, volleyball and wrestling in addition to Ithaca’s men’s and women’s varsity basketball teams.

ITHACA BOMBERS MEN’S BASKETBALL

Program History T

he men’s basketball program at Ithaca College has been a model of consistency. The Bombers’ tradition began under coach Carl Chamberlain when the 1929-30 team finished 11-4. Since then Ithaca’s accomplishments include: • 60 winning seasons in 80 years; • an overall record of 1,014-733, for a winning percentage of .580; • a total of eight coaches (only one of whom posted a losing record), including five who won at least 100 games; • nine NCAA and 14 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) playoff berths and three ECAC championships; • seven league titles, including five outright conference championships since 1971-72. Last year, Jim Mullins completed his 13th season as the Bombers’ head coach. He was the interim coach for one season and took over as full-time head coach during the 1998-99 season. Mullins guided the Bombers to their first ECAC Upstate New York Championship in 2000 and coached Ithaca’s first first-team all-American in guard Pat Britton. Two years later Ithaca won the Empire 8 title and reached the NCAA playoffs. Mullins guided the Bombers to their second ECAC Upstate New York title in 2006. Ithaca was led by Jim Bellis, who finished his career ranked sixth on the all-time scoring list. Led by all-American point guard Sean Burton and a record-setting offense, Ithaca returned to the NCAA playoffs in 2009. In 2010, the team captured their third ECAC title. Mullins took over for one of the Bombers’ most successful men’s basketball coaches, Tom Baker. A 1963 Ithaca graduate, Baker returned to his alma mater in 1978 and led the Bombers to 13 straight winning seasons. He completed his 19-year career with a 307-191 overall record. It took only four years for Baker to lead the Bombers into the NCAA playoffs. The 1981-82 team set a school record for wins in a season and was the first Ithaca group to win 20 or more games, finishing with a 22-5 mark. Ithaca earned a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs, falling in the opening round to eventual semifinalist Brooklyn, 50-47. In 1982-83 Ithaca returned to the postseason. The Bombers won the Independent College Athletic Conference (ICAC) championship and defeated RIT in a one-game playoff, 49-48, to qualify for the NCAA tournament. The season ended with a triple-overtime 76-74 loss to Potsdam. Tod Hart was a top player for Baker’s early teams. Ithaca’s career scoring leader with 1,789 points, Hart set an NCAA Division III record for consecutive field goals by making 21 shots over a three-game span (he still shares the record). He was 10-for-10 against Clarkson in a 1980 game and two years later did not miss on 16 attempts against Rensselaer. Hart benefited from the playmaking abilities

3

of Jamie Frank, who averaged 5.4 assists per game and set a school record with 488 career assists. In 1986-87 the Bombers won 10 of their last 14 regular-season games to claim the ICAC title and an NCAA postseason berth. Playing at defending national champion Potsdam, Ithaca nearly pulled off the upset before falling, 57-53. Mike Hess and Hall of Famer Andy Vye followed Hart and continued a tradition of top forwards for the Bombers. The versatile Hess finished his career ranked first in career steals and third in scoring. Vye, who played from 1983 to 1987, ranks in the school’s career top five in both scoring and rebounding. Forward Steve Dunham, a two-time National Association of Basketball Coaches all-American, graduated in 1994 as a 1,000-point scorer. Also a twotime captain, Dunham was the leader of back-to-back 20win teams in 1992-93 and 1993-94. In 1993 the Bombers played and won their first NCAA playoff home game, a 71-56 decision over Fredonia. The following season Ithaca reached the ECAC semifinals. During those years Ithaca also won two consecutive conference titles for the first time since the 1981-82 and 1982-83 teams. With the NCAA’s adoption of the three-point shot, Archie McEachern and Vince Perrine set a number of school records. McEachern made a school-record 182 three-point baskets and averaged almost two per game. In the last game of his career, against Utica in 1992, he scored a career-high 32 points and set a school record with seven three-pointers. In a 92-68 upset win over national power Hamilton in 1994, Perrine netted 30 points on 10 threepointers. During his career Perrine set six school records for three-point field-goal shooting. The 1976-77 team advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament to highlight the five-year coaching stint of Darryl Lehnus. Hugh Hurst compiled a 106-93 record during his nine-year career, leading Ithaca into the NCAA College Division tournament during the 1971-72 season. Among the top players during that period were record-setters Greg Albano and Mike Williams. Each averaged better than 13 rebounds per game during his career. Williams once had 29 rebounds in a game; he averaged 17 per game in 1969-70. Albano, who held the single-game record of 45 points set against RIT in 1969, now shares the record with current junior Jordan Marcus who scored 45 against Hobart in 2009. Carlton Wood, who had led the 1938-39 Ithaca team in scoring, took over from Ben Light as coach. Wood’s first teams were led by Alden Chadwick, who averaged 16.1 points per game in his career and set eight school records that still stand. Rich Slomkowski averaged 17.5 points and 9.9 rebounds per game in 79 career games. Ithaca first qualified for a postseason tournament under Wood, earning a spot in the NCAA College Division regionals in the 196364 season. George Strickland led that team in scoring and

rebounding. Sophomore guard George Valesente, who has become Ithaca’s most winning baseball coach, was another top player. Ithaca enjoyed a 12-game winning streak that year, another school record. Ithaca’s winning ways continued under coach Ben Light during the previous seven seasons. His 1948-49 team was 16-5, with the losses against Syracuse, Iowa, Iowa State, St. Bonaventure and Cortland. Jim Hercinger and Ross Passineau were top scorers on those teams. Light also coached Ray Kirkgasser, who became Ithaca’s first player ever to be drafted by an NBA team when he was taken 81st overall by the Syracuse Nationals in 1951. Isadore “Doe” Yavits compiled a 138-78 record during 14 years as head coach. He coached three teams from 1935 to 1939 that each featured six future Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame members. The next three teams Yavits coached were a combined 31-11; three of those losses were to East Stroudsburg. In 1940-41 Ithaca’s top five scorers— Charlie Baker, Robert Ingerson, Michael Lurel, Mike McKillop and Frank Urso— were future Athletic Hall of Fame members. During the 1941-42 season, Urso averaged more than 14 points a game. In Ithaca’s three losses that season he averaged 20 points per game. He lost his life in 1945 during the invasion of Iwo Jima.

im Mullins completed his 13th season as the Bombers’ head coach in 2010. The team finished 20-8 last season, and qualified for the Empire 8 tournament for the seventh straight season. The Bombers also qualified for the ECAC tournament where they defeated Rensselaer and Brockport to win their third conference title. Ithaca has reached the NCAA playoffs twice in Mullins’ career, doing so in the 2001-02 and 2008-09 seasons. Mullis was named Empire 8 Coach of the Year following both seasons. In 1999-2000 he guided the Bombers to their first ECAC Upstate New York championship. Ithaca finished 18-10 overall and 8-6 in the Empire 8. In his second season Ithaca finished 12-13 overall and 6-4 in the Empire Athletic Association. In his first season Mullins guided Ithaca to a 13-7 start and the number-four ranking in the region. The Bombers finished 14-12 and earned a spot in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) playoffs. Mullins has been a part of successful programs in a number of sports. He began his coaching career as an undergraduate at the University of Connecticut, working as a student assistant for the women’s JIM MULLINS basketball program. After earning a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Connecticut, Mullins came to Ithaca, where he earned his master’s degree and served as a graduate assistant coach in basketball and baseball. He also worked at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy for a season as assistant basketball coach. In 1982 he began a five-year stint as head men’s basketball coach at the University of Connecticut (Avery Point). Mullins led his team to five consecutive Connecticut Small College Conference playoff finals and a league record of 60-20. At the same time, he was an assistant baseball coach at the school, helping lead the team to six straight conference championships and a 71-1 overall record. During that period Mullins also coached the Waterford Mariners women’s softball team. The Mariners won two Atlantic Coast League titles and one New England crown, and earned a 12th-place national ranking. The Mariners were 125-61 under Mullins. Mullins moved on to Plattsburgh in 1987 as an assistant men’s basketball coach. There he worked on the staff of Ithaca graduate Larry Cowan ‘81. After five years with the Cardinals, Mullins returned to Ithaca as an assistant coach in basketball and baseball. He played a large role in Ithaca’s success during his tenure as an assistant coach. In his five seasons the Bombers posted an 86-46 record and earned one NCAA playoff and three ECAC postseason invitations. Ithaca put together back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in 1992-93 and 1993-94, his first two seasons on the varsity staff. He also spent two years as an assistant softball coach, helping the Bombers to a pair of NCAA playoff appearances and a spot in the 1996 College World Series.

mith completed his fourth season with Ithaca coaching staff in 2009-10. In his four years on the staff, the Bombers have posted a record of 76-33 with an ECAC title in 2010, a trip to the second round of the NCAA playoffs in 2009 and appearances in the Empire 8 Championship Tournament during all four seasons. Smith was previously at Allegheny where he was an assistant varsity coach and the Gators’ head junior varsity coach for the 2005-06 season. Prior to his arrival at Allegheny, Smith served as head coach at SUNY Canton for the 2004-05 season, coaching two all-conference and one all-region pick, and served as graduate assistant coach at St. Lawrence from 2002-04. Smith was a four-year starter at Bethany College, scoring 1,255 points (fifth on the program’s all-time list). He led the nation in three-point field goals per game in 2000-01 and his 313 career three-point baskets rank 13th among all NCAA Division III players. As a senior, Smith helped the Bisons to a school-record 21 wins and the program’s first NCAA playoff appearance in 20 years. He also played golf at Bethany, serving as team captain for three years and earning all-conference recognition.

NEVADA SMITH

A 2002 graduate of Bethany, Smith earned a master’s degree from St. Lawrence in 2004. Smith also spent three seasons as an assistant coach with Ithaca’s softball team; the Bombers advanced to the NCAA playoffs twice and finished fourth at the NCAA world series in 2008.
