Presidential Introduction

Mr Michael Rhodes, ALS President

It is my great pleasure to welcome members and friends of the ALS to our 2011 Annual Scientific Meeting. The opportunity to hold this meeting in Cardiff at the end of my two year term as President is especially poignant because I grew up there and attended Cardiff High School before leaving in 1978 to go to medical school. I returned in 1991 as Lecturer of Surgery at the University Hospital of Wales, and had the most unusual experience of working alongside my father who was Professor of Gastroenterology there at the time. I was also privileged to work with Brian Rees and back in 1992/3 we performed eight Minimally Invasive Oesophagectomies (MIO), eventually presented and published at the world congress in Kyoto. How things have come full circle with the new interest in MIO! I am delighted that we have attracted several prominent international speakers. George Fielding from New York will debate with Karl Miller from Salzburg about the role of laparoscopic gastric banding, whilst Christine Ren-Fielding will be the BJS Lecturer, speaking on the

subject of “New Horizons in the Treatment of Morbid Obesity”. On top of that, the next President of the ALS, Tim Rockall, will present a fascinating insight into 3D surgery. With our guest speakers concentrating on aspects of obesity surgery, it is not surprising that our local organisers led by Umesh Khot have prepared a range of bariatric procedures for the live operating day transmitted to Cardiff from Morriston Hospital. This will include the opportunity to see several of the UK’s leading bariatric surgeons performing a laparoscopic gastric bypass. I look forward to comparing the different approaches of Richard Welbourn, Roger Ackroyd and Simon Dexter. The social side of the programme is attractive with an ALS Industry Partners’ Reception & ALS Conference Dinner at the National Museum Cardiff.

Welcome from the ALTS Chair

Mrs Jane Bradley-Hendricks, ALTS Chair

A warm welcome to all ALTS members.

Welcome to Cardiff! Croeso i Gaerdydd!

Within Cardiff, Wales’ capital city, you’ll find unique attractions, top class entertainment and quality shopping with a difference – all within walking distance. Innovative architecture sits alongside historic buildings and Cardiff Bay offers entertainment for everyone. However the most important aspect is the ALS Annual Scientific Meeting!

You will notice that some of the ALTS programme coincides with the ALS Annual Scientific Meeting and that is so theatre practitioners don’t miss the keynote speakers.

This year promises to keep up the excellent programme, that just seems to improve year on year. When other conferences are struggling to maintain numbers and attract delegates the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeon’s Annual Scientific Meeting, in Cardiff City Hall on the 17 and 18 of November, is set to impress. The aim of the meeting is to provide something for everyone and is aimed at training the whole theatre team. The first part of Thursday will be dedicated to live bariatric surgery; the second part will feature 3D colorectal, oesophagogastric, gynaecological, single port and robotic procedures. Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Limited have promised to give us a very informative session on humidification of CO2, something we have not covered in the past.

The ALS is committed to providing affordable training for theatre practitioners and this year’s ‘early bird’ rate for members of £100 for two days really is excellent value for money. We are indebted to SIGH (Surgical Instrument Group Holdings Ltd) for providing a number of training bursaries for theatre practitioners, as an Association we recognize how difficult it is for practitioners to access funds to enable them to attend. Therefore we are always looking for new ways to assist with this. If you have a spare £60 the ALS Conference Dinner on the Thursday night will be an enjoyable night out and there is always a surprise in store! Don’t plan on going to bed early! Look forward to meeting you all. Jane Bradley-Hendricks ALTS Chair

ALS Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Training Day The ALS Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Training Day offers a unique opportunity to work in a state of the art skills and simulation centre and be trained by some of the UK’s best laparoscopic surgeons. The main focus will be hands-on operating using tissue models for gall bladder and colonic resections. There will be access to suturing practice and endoscopy simulations. The new ISCP (Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme) assessment will be explained by Mr Pete Sedman (Hull). Trainees will be assisted by experienced faculty (please see faculty list opposite). Places will be limited to 20 and are expected to go very quickly. The training is aimed at Specialist Trainees in Surgery (ST2–8). To qualify for a FREE place, trainees must register for the full Annual Scientific Meeting by Friday 21 October 2011 (£165), and be current paid-up members of the ALS. JOINING THE UK & EIRE’S

Premier Laparoscopic Surgical Association

The Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons (ALS) was formed in April 1994 by the amalgamation of the Society of Minimally Invasive General Surgeons (SMIGS) and the British Surgical Stapling Group (BSSG). The ALS has thus become the main voice for laparoscopic surgeons in Great Britain & Ireland. Its principal aims are to foster innovation in laparoscopic surgery, to provide a structure for training, to promote educational and academic objectives and to liaise under the umbrella of the Association of Surgeons with the surgical Royal Colleges, the Specialist Advisory Committee and other relevant bodies. It supports members in negotiations with Trusts, definitions of job plans and contracts and also the assessment of trainees and training posts with the Postgraduate Regional Deans. Although surgeons may be members of other multidisciplinary groups, such as those dealing with upper and lower gastrointestinal disease, it is important that the specific education and training needs of the laparoscopic surgeon are recognised. The ALS firmly believes in the importance of high quality training programmes throughout the British Isles and this is a fundamental component of the Association’s activities. Many laparoscopic operations were initially developed by enthusiasts and later adopted within the general surgical repertoire. It is therefore essential that all surgeons performing laparoscopic surgery

should be trained to the highest possible standard. To this end the ALS is involved in the organisation and approval of laparoscopic training courses throughout the United Kingdom. Further training courses are organised by the ALS with the support of commercial companies at leading training centres overseas. Surgeons wishing to develop their laparoscopic techniques and repertoire in their own hospital are supported in so doing by proctoring by members of the ALS. The ALS has gained representation on the Council of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland (ASGBI) and is cross-represented on the Association of Coloproctology (ACPGBI), the Association of Upper GI Surgeons (AUGIS) and the Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT). A representative on Council is a member of the General Surgical Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) and the ALS is affiliated to the European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons (EAES) and shares the journal “Surgical Endoscopy” with this Association and with the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).

Visit www.alsgbi.org for professional and patient information, advice on laparoscopic procedures and details on forthcoming meetings and courses.

REASONS TO JOIN

The Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons (ALS) • The ALS has evolved for those with an interest in minimal access surgery and strives to support the development of clinical services, education and training. The parallel laparoscopic session at the annual ASGBI International Surgical Congress (Spring) is for both trainee and consultant surgeons. Its extremely popular stand-alone Autumn meeting includes live operating and academic sessions as well as dedicated skills training for trainee members. • The ALS supports trainee and consultant surgeons in developing their surgical repertoires, and champions the best possible standards in higher surgical training. • The Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery Preceptorship Programme is a joint initiative between the ALS and ACPGBI. It is directed at training established consultant surgeons in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. It remains active in Wales, Scotland and Ireland: For further information please contact Jenny Treglohan (ALS) on + 44 (0)20 7973 0305. • As part of its commitment to promote the highest standards the ALS has developed confidential clinical databases to allow comparative audit. • Use of these laparoscopic databases in upper and lower GI disease is provided free to ALS members. • ALS actively assesses hospital provision of laparoscopic equipment and compiles a national audit to inform and advise on acceptable standards. • Affiliate membership of the Association is available for nurses and other theatre personnel. The Association of Laparoscopic Theatre Staff (ALTS) holds parallel meetings during the ALS Annual Scientific Meeting. • Fellowships are available for training to allow members to visit centres abroad and foreign surgeons to visit centres of excellence in the UK and Ireland. • Discount for members on Annual Scientific Meeting fees.
